I used to do a daily hockey pool with my friends. Just pick the winner. I wish there was some sort of online fantasy league like that.

ha, in tsn comments about the escrow:

Author: jabo007
Lets' see, Yashin makes $7.6million this year divided by about 15 paychecks for the season = more than $500,000/paycheck. Now take off 10% for the escrow account = $500,000 - $50,000 = $450,000. Poor guy is only gonna get a cheque worth about $450 grand for his first 2 weeks of work (playing hockey). Gonna be tough paying those bills and putting food on the table, gonna have to just scrape by until the end of the month. Is there a player relief fund we fans can contribute to?

No red line, and touchups.

Sounds like NHL is finally starting to take tips from college hockey.

I saw the Wild play the Panthers at The Ralph (www.theralph.com) a couple weeks ago and I could tell they were having so much fun being able to have the long pass. Makes the breakout totally different.

The only problem is they have to teach some of these guys that they can't go sit at the other blue line and they might actually have to come in and play a good forecheck.

my fav new rule is no two line passes, I love how much it is opening up the game. outside of the habs being 2-0, my favorite moment of the season so far was watching Gretzky's face turn beat red when the ref told him he messed up the line up card, love Gretzky but just showed, not even he's perfect.

Predictions for tonight:
Philly over NJ (NJ better goalie, Philly better scoring so just going with philly)
Caps over Atlanta (no Heatley, no Kovalchuk...Ovechkin=awesome)
Pitt over Carolina (yes I've jumped on the Crosby bandwagon)
Calgary over Columbus (no explaination necessary)
Tampa over Florida (see above)
Boston over Buffalo (Boston is HUGE, and better goaltending)
Chicago over SJ (I hate the sharks)

gotta say my favorite part of opening night was watching the Stars come from being down 4-0 to getting the W against the Kings, 4-5. Zubov is the man. Turco was a little shaky at the start to say the least(3 GA in the first 3 min.), but i still have faith in him.
i like the opening up of the nuetral zone, but the game is still slowed down by all the penalties getting called. once the players get used to it i think we'll see some really fast-paced action back and forth. Center Ice Package should be well worth it.

This is just going to take awhile for the defensemen to adjust their play.

It rarely (relatively) happens in college because they're used to it. In time the NHL D-men will adjust as well. It's still cool to see a 2 on 1, especially when it's your forwards that burn the other team's D-men, but it just means they defensemen have to keep their heads on a swivel and drop back toward the redline or further if they see a forward attempting to cherry-pick (to steal a basketball term).

i must say i was very impressed by ovenchikin and i expect big things from him LETS GO CAPS!
Ovechkin (not sure on spelling) is a great player. He's incredibly fun to watch. Crosby is great, as well, but I think he's let some of the hype get to his head. Zach Parise (of the Devil's, former UND player) has a great head on his shoulders and is always a joy to watch. Never takes a shift off, a great grinder, incredible stick-handler and a great shot, not quite a sniper, though. He moves his feet well, too. Definitely another rookie to watch.

10-08-2005, 03:09 PM
Roberto Luongo is the Panthers goalie. Definitely a potential hall-of-famer. He is unreal. Look him up on ESPN or NHL.com. Good stuff. But yeah, about keeping the nucleus together, they DEFINITELY need to do that. Ownership has to show a committment to winning and keep everyone here for a few years. None of this one and done crap!

And LOCK UP LUONGO FOR LIFE! (In a contract that is! ;)) He needs to spend the rest of his career in sunny South Florida.

For the past few years, Luongo has been the MOST UNDERRATED goalie. And, its not like he doesnt get the press. People mention him in top 10 lists constantly, and even a few top 5's which is amazing considering that is the best 5 goalies in the world. The point is, he could be top 3 or even possibly the 2nd best goalie in the world behind Martin Brodeur. Pretty good considering Marty could leave the game as the best goalie ever to play.

Not even so much management showing a commitment, but being able to afford the likes of Luongo (who already wants out), Jokinen, J-Bo, Horton, Weiss etc... under the salary cap, it's sure as hell not going to be an easy thing to do if these guys keep progressing the way they have.

...on a different note, that Habs/Leafs game was AWESOME!! GO HABS GO:D

The best hockey games are low scoring.

If all you want is big numbers, watch NBA, they don't know the definition of "defense."

As for the increase in calling obstruction penalties, that is something they are cracking down on in the NCAA, as well. They started really making a point to crack down on it last year, and it kinda got lax by the end of the season, but they're doing it again tonight, as is shown by the UND vs. Miami (Ohio) game having 23 powerplays combined.

But Avery is the same guy who made disparraging comments about french Canadians. makes you wonder if there is any substance to the allegations.

last night avery was shoving hemsky, i think, in the faceoff line-up, so as soon as the puck was dropped mctavish had laroque on the ice. avery took down jason smith in a bit of a cheap shot, and in the scuffle afterwards avery wouldn't go anywhere george. Understandable, I suppose, I walked past him in the mall last year, and that man is large.

Avery came away with a bleeding face courtesy of Jason S., so all wasn't lost.

That's true. I think though that we're going to see GAAs increase across the league for all goalies. With 8, 9,even 10 goals being scored each game, GAAs have to go up.

oh yeah for sure. i expected that. my buddy (matty p who you've met) was saying how goaltending doesn't matter in fantasy pools this year b/c all of them are going to have terrible GAA and save %. well if they are ALL terrible, being the best of the terrible is still best! the GAAs will increase for sure and i'm well aware of that. i just think the goalies are off to a rough start and will be pickin up where they left off before long. cloutier and raycroft will increase their play the most hopefully, for fantasy purposes and belfour b/c the leafs are going to the cup!!!!!! A Colorado judge tossed out Steve Moore's lawsuit against Bertuzzi et al., citing inapproriate jurisdiction. http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=139625&hubname=

To me that was a no brainer. All of the parties have ties to B.C. and the alleged incident happened in B.C.. the only reason why the action was commenced in Colorado was that Moore, if he won the law suit, would have been able to obtain higher monetary compensation.

do you have DishNet. i've read a few other places that OLN and Dnet are in some sort of argument that is resulting in OLN not showing hockey to Dish users. although i've read some other accounts of cable customers seeing something other than hockey when even the guide is showing hockey on at the time.

i have cable w/ the Center Ice Package and the only problem i've had so far is Ave's games getting blacked out 'cause they're apparently my 'local' team, despite closer locations in MN, Chicago, and St. Louis.:ugh

No, I have damn Adelphia Cable. Apparently they are in the same fight as Dnet though which just pisses me off like you can't believe. I posted this in the Leafs thread:

9-1 for the Leafs.

I'm not a fan of running up the score, but after the way the Thrashers conducted themselves tonight, they deserved it. Boulton went head-hunting on Lindros when he elbowed Lindros in the head. Sutton ramming Tucker's face into the end glass was disgusting and Stefan's late hit on Antropov was brutal. Hartley has no control over his players and he has no class. There should be a number of suspensions from this game. The Thrashers are a complete disgrace.

great post for real! i seriously hate some of the new rules and how they're calling penalties. how the hell are the d-men supposed to move guys now? it's just not fair. the penalties that are being called in front of the net were NOT the problem. the clutching, grabbing, and hooking (both players with and without the puck) by d-men was a massive problem and i'm glad they got rid of that, but in front of the net...let the boys fight it out.

Penguins haven't won a game yet and have 4 points.

I don't really know if I like this points system
i don't like the points system either. here is my opinion on it and i would like some feedback on how people feel about this. first off they changed the NHL points system about 5 or 6 years ago when they decided to give a point for an OT loss. this gave the leafs their first 100 pt season, which still wouldn't have happened if they didn't get OT loss points. since they changed the points system once again, why not totally change it. here is what i think they should/should have done.

Win in regular time = 3
Win in OT = 2
Loss in OT or shootout = 1
Loss in regular time = 0

when you do this points system you don't have teams playing the last 5 mins of the game to tie. when you are tied after regular time you get a point and because of this teams won't try for the last 5 mins b/c they have nothing to gain. no reason to take a chance when you get a point anyways for going to OT.
also with this points system you score a goal at the end of the game to win the game you get 3 pts, they get 0, rather then going to OT and each getting one.

the reason i feel this way is because say a team goes on a 5 game road trip to the other conference. all you want is points for YOUR team...you don't care about the standing at all. your team ends up going 1-0-4. they just got 6 pts and only won a single game. thats a pretty decent road trip! 6 pts on the road in 5 games and you gave up 9 pts, but giving up points doesn't really matter b/c it's the other conference.

just my opinion and suggestion on what they could consider...opinions?

Fleury I have no clue.
knee and hand? i thought it was his shoulder???
he was wearing two blockers i know in pre-season and then just decided to retire b/c he couldn't cut it. thats terrible tho, for a guy with such talent to have to retire so young. just sad.

just looked it up...

Nerve damage forces Dan Blackburn to retire...citing permanent nerve damage in his left shoulder from an injury sustained in 2003.

John Davidson tells a great story about Blackburn. he took Dan into his house when he just came to the NHL (he was like 18 or something), to try and make him feel a bit more comfortable. well Davidson has two girls and they were 17 and 19 at the time and Blackburn was staying right across the hall from them. The girls were in love with Dan b/c he was making some serious jack and playing in the nhl and what-not, so Davidson had to sprinkle potato chips on the floor in the hall each night so his girls wouldn't be fooling around with Blackburn!!!!! i thought that was pretty funny when i heard it!

I was actually thinking about the same points system.

The Penguins are 0-2-4 for a total of 4 points. And they are only 4 points behind the Rangers who are 3-1-2?

It's not right I think. With the new points system.
Rangers 3-1-2 for 11 pts.
Penguins - 0-2-4 for 4 pts.

Just looks more right.

McKenzie: Only in Canada
TSN.ca Staff
10/19/2005

Only in Canada, you say?

Yes, only in Canada could the announcement of an 81-player long list of potential Olympians be met with as much excitement and fanfare as there was when Hockey Canada posted it on their website Wednesday.

Amid the cries of where's Mike Rathje or how could they leave off Darcy Tucker, it's safe to say Wayne Gretzky and company have sufficiently covered themselves for pretty much every possibility, be it injuries, slumps or incredible hot streaks.

Now, if you want to be righteously indignant that a very good but underrated goaltender like Minnesota's Dwayne Roloson or onetime Stanley Cup finalist Jean-Sebastien Giguere of Anaheim aren't on the list and a fresh-faced rookie like Cam Ward of Carolina or Vancouver hockey fans' favourite whipping boy Dan Cloutier are there, be our guest. It's your birth right, after all.

Because you would have to think it's going to take something monumental for Marty Brodeur and Roberto Luongo not to be the starting tandem in net, wouldn't you agree?

But it does give fans an opportunity to do what they do best - argue.

Leaf fans, given their heady start to the season, already have Eric Lindros, Jason Allison and Bryan McCabe in the starting five.

And while fans in Philadelphia will like that rookies Mike Richards and Jeff Carter are on the list, those in Anaheim will be lamenting that Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf aren't, even though the whole lot of them were pretty spectacular at last year's world junior tourney.

To say nothing of the inclusion of Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby and Calgary's Dion Phaneuf, two of the most intriguing young guns on the list who maybe, just maybe, actually have a shot.

This is all great hot stove material, but the only question is, why stop at 81 names? Why not just put every Canadian player who is in the NHL on the list?

Which, if it had happened, no doubt would have to led to this question: how could they could possibly leave off Angelo Esposito, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews?

Only in Canada, indeed.

cheers.

true. nashville should have never gotten a team, and it should be moved. They're not selling out their games, and if they aren't by the end of the season they should be relocated to the 'Peg.

this game was a great game. but the habs weren't putting away their chances at all. they had so many chances and had pressure on philly most of the game. what a nice OT goal. i am an anti-habs, but i'll take a win over the more hated philly flyers any day.

'twas a very enjoyable game. 2 high quality teams with a lot of high quality scoring chances. I'm not taking anything away from the habs, but I really think the refs dictated the terms of the game in the 3rd period. There were just way too many bullshit penalties called (on both sides of the benches all game) but the 3rd period got out of hand with the penalties called against the flyers, and thus gave the habs all the momentum. I realize the new NHL has been ridiculous about this stuff, but even you have to admit that some of those penalties were way weak. And speaking of weak, that 125 foot rebound put a-away goal was a joke. Who shoots the puck the length of the ice on a power play?? And why was the hit against Primeau not a penalty? Argh whatever, i'm not disappointed. We played the best we could with the situations the ref's put us in, and i'll take a point from a team as good as the Habs any day. This game just re-affirmed my hatred for the "new" NHL as it were.

the amount of penalties called was excessive. but each one was legit if they are calling equially for both sides. teams have to get used to it. i mean how fucking corky is that penalty you get for accidentily putting it over the glass. kovalev grabbed one, to give you a 5-on-3 for 2 full minutes. and you popped one in. so at least it was mutually devastating for both sides.

personally, i like the 'new' nhl. its fast and exciting. the whistle does go too often, but otherwise, i cant complain.

great game though. cant wait for the rematch.

It was a great game. The Habs are young and fast.

I went to the Leafs-Bruins game on Monday. That was pretty exciting with Belfour standing on his head.

I'm the same way with yelling at players to shoot the puck. Any time you're at a Leafs game all you hear half the time is the crowd yelling "shoot!" It amuses me that I, and 25,000 people, have the audacity to presume that we know what professional hockey players should do with the puck. They're professional hockey players for chrisakes!

The only thing I dislike about the 'new' NHL is the shootout. For me, it relegates a team sport to one based on individual ability. There's no shootout in basketball, no homerun competition in baseball, and no punting contest in football.

In my opinion, if the NHL wants to get rid of ties, make them play 4 on 4 until someone scores. In baseball, extra innings can go on forever. In basketball, overtime goes until one team has the lead at the buzzer. Just keep playing until there is a goal.

His punishment was too lenient. He had to sit out a year. A year that they weren't even playing hockey. He injured a guy so bad that we don't even know if he will be back playing hockey again.

The only reason he didn't get a tougher punishment is because he is a stay player. I guarantee you that if the roles were reversed, Steve Moore would have received a much harsher punishment than Bertuzzi did.

There were 6 fans dressed in inmate clothing with "Bertuzzi 44" on the back of them, I think every single news person there interviewed them. it was so fucking beautiful that i'm not even upset about the loss.
then again, it was only so beautiful because sourray fucked up and should've brought him to the corner, it wasnt a 2 on 1. and the 3rd ottawa goal and spezza last one were prime fuckups on behalf of the habs.

i'd say that the habs minus those two moments deserved to win, but that'd be a stretch considering ryder's first goal and the bounce it took off the wall was lucky, and the fact that theo was on fuckgin fire making amazing saves.

all i have to say is, every game has been incredibly intense and the habs look hot! im excited for the rest of the matchups this season with the sens. gonna be a great division rivalry.

Hoping for another win. They haven't lost in regulation at home yet

as an aside, killee has the hockey pool wrapped up. Like 100% wrapped up. Sweetest pool team I have seen this year, absolutely loaded.

hey
how bout them habs.

12-3-1 and first in the east.
we keep pulling off tight ones, but a win is a win, and we're winning them all.

i was at the game last night, third period was explosive. loved it.
i think it did a lot for theo's confidence too. cant wait to play the leafs on saturday and continue the streak.

yeaaaa.

cheers.

Gotta love what the habs have been doing. Showing lots of character. Theo needed a big game.
