First thing is, don't be scared by cheap. All of my stuff (I've been playing bass for about 2 ½ years) is on the cheap end. Right now, my main bass is the Rouge six-string, which can be found on Musician's Friend for 279. My amp is a Behringer Head (about 279 on MF) through two Behringer cabinets (again, I think around 229 on MF). I've had this setup for about a year, and other then the bass having a little fret buzz (taken off by my local shop for free), there's been nothing wrong with it.

Go with a squire, at least you know someone from fender walked by it at some point in time. (plus i have one so I'm partial)

P basses are heavier and have a thicker neck so I think they're better for rock, Jazz basses have a thinner neck that tends to be easier to get around on if your into playing a lot of notes
