Buying a guitar like that because Dave has one is silly. It's a niche guitar, one you'll barely use, and difficult to maintain (strings) and set up live.

Depends on the player, not the guitar. DADGAD would be niche tuning I never used if I didn't use it all the time.

Read the original post- it's all about trying to be Dave. That makes it a niche guitar.

who wouldnt want to try and play like dave? he's great :confused as long as you have your own style mixed in of course. i also doubt dave is the first to use a baritone

as to the guitar it's pretty good for the money from what i understand, but i've never played one

I don't think so, Rob. Danelectro and other companies have been making baritones for years. It's not like they're rereleasing this guitar for fans of Dave Matthews. To buy a baritone around here is probably risking fanboy-ishness, and very likely a less usable instrument, but there's nothing about the instrument that fundamentally makes it a niche instrument. There's nothing wrong with buying a baritone, but there are wrong reasons for wanting one.

That said, I got an Alvarez 12-string influenced by Dave Matthews and other musicians, but it was a choice in sound, and I've used it for things other than making Grey Street sound authentic. In fact, I haven't used it for that at all. I hardly play DM stuff these days except when messing around with friends who know his music. I guess I'm saying that someone could buy a guitar and find wider uses for it than the apparent or explicit purposes. I think a baritone would be a great instrument to have around if one actually creates things with it or has a band situation that would make it worthwhile.

Anyway, this reminds me -- my Danelectro 56 Pro Limited is here today! Don't worry Rob, it's not a baritone, and I only realized after I ordered it that Dave Matthews has a similar looking guitar (the baritone). Besides, I don't give a fuck what he plays. :)
