Hey all,

I've been playing guitar for probably around 3 years now give or take a little. I got into dave around a year or somethin ago and I can play about every one of Dmb's songs. At the moment... im getting jazz lessons and i'll hopefully be playing in my schools jazz band after auditions. But my question is this, I've learned all of this great dMb stuff and can play it well.. so now, acoustically, what else can I play around with? What artists/bands are fun to play for you? I honestly don't know where to go right now besides for the jazz music that im incorporating into my style. Any suggestions?

Thanks alot,
Carl

:thumbsup That covers a lot of the nDMB artists I know on guitar as well. So many Metallica songs translate really well acoustically too...some intricate stuff there.

Mayer is an incredible guitar player---one would be very lucky to be in his league, with that being said, i dont really care for his music but i like his style

I love playing Hero of the Day, One, Fade to Black and Mama Said. Nothing Else Matters and Unforgiven are good too.

Honestly, Dave's stuff is pretty advanced from a rythym guitar standpoint, so if you can play his stuff well you're in good shape. John Mayer - in spite of what some people say - will definately improve your chops. He has monstrous hands and his songs are very challenging.

If you want to play jazz, though, you should really listen to some of the standards and work your way from there. It's not hard stuff, but they'll have chords and voicings in them that simply don't come up in contemporary pop music. I'm sure you'll learning all this in your lessons, though.

Other than that, I think that Ben Harper is a good choice. Jamming along to some Phish tunes might help out as well.

Good luck getting into the jazz band!

I hadn't played a DMB song in about a year, and all it took was 2 seconds of looking up a chord here or there and it was much easier. After a few years of experience the songs shouldn't give you any difficulty. I mean if you're huge into nuances yeah it could take ten years to get every strum correct but not even Dave plays the songs the same.

You should learn some Phish songs. Don't know if that's your thing but I challenge anyone to not struggle with the first minute of You Enjoy Myself (http://emilstabs.org/wiki/index.php/You_Enjoy_Myself) (the first 15 or so bars on that page). Or pretty much all of the compositional portion of Fluffhead, Fluff's Travels. (http://emilstabs.org/wiki/index.php/Fluff%27s_Travels)
