sweet mercy, my friend; the mix from the Gorge is probably one of the worst I've ever heard. I have audience recordings that sound better than that. The guitar sounds too bright for those low notes. Strap a new set of strings on your guitar, lower the action a lot, and play with the thinnest pick possible. Then you might get that sound.
That must have been one of his first shows with the effects, as he constantly sounded like he was forgetting to turn some light distortion off (and it was being turned off halfway through songs for him... Thank you, Monk).

The mix from the Live Traxx release of Golden Gate Park is a little off, and LIOG is definitely on it, so maybe that's what you're thinking of?
LIOG is also on The Gorge...

Instead of creating a new thread, hopefully someone can answer this:
What guitar is Dave using at the Yoshi's show. It sounds so stinkin clean and pure. Is that the Lakewood?
That era could have been either the Lakewood or very likely could have been the old Yamaha.

it's actually a Takamine. one of those dreads with a cutaway...i think. there's some pics in "Step Into the Light" from that show, I think.

the tone on the gorge is painfully thin, there is no indication from that recording that taylors are even half decent guitars because it is so devoid of any richness or color. my friend doesn't know much about guitars and said to me after hearing it that he wasn't impressed much by dave's guitar and i told him to listen to live at luther and tell me later what he thought.
Rob, what effects are you reffering to? Just curious I didn't know if he changed setups that year and what he did if he did.
He's started to use some effects live- light distortion is the culprit at this show.
