View Full Version : Create an All-Star Band

Ok,
Me and some friends always end up in this discussion after a long night of...relaxing. If you could create an all-star supergroup, who would be in it? Only rule is that you cannot have more than one member from any one band. They can be alive or dead. And don't bash other people's posts, I want this to be a fun thread, not an arguement like most of these threads.
So here's my lineup:
Trey Anastasio - Lead Guitar (Phish)
Victor Wooten - Bass (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Solo band)
John Bonham - Drums (Led Zeppelin)
Mickey Hart - Percussion (Grateful Dead)
John Medeski - Keyboards/Organ (Medeski Martin and Wood)
Dave Matthews - Rhythm Guitar and Vocals (DMB)
They'd probably sound kinda strange together, but it might be cool.

I just added this to make it more interesting. Or else I would have taken all of Phish, added Dave and Mickey Hart and switched Henrietta for Bonzo.

oops, you're right I meant Joel
I was being sarcastic. I've been around long enough to have seen it all around here, including this quite a few times. As it's a DMB message board, you always get a DMB bias.

No offense to the deceased, but the leads I mentioned are all much better than Jerry. And the whole lead/rhythm thing is partially subjective. Take Friend of the Devil for example - with the walking baseline on the low E and A strings. Some would call it lead, I call it rhythm. Why? Because it's repetitive/rhythmic? Maybe. Where do you draw the line? On the other hand, on live versions of Truckin' he just lets loose. Does one call that lead? Maybe.

Or you could get a REAL sitar player, like Ravi Shankar (chk spelling)
Coincidentally they're all brits ('cept Dylan of course but all he contributes are the lyrics)
Bob Dylan - lyrics
Paul McCartney - bass/songwriter/vocals
Freddie Mercury - vocals/keys
David Gilmour - lead guitar/vocals
Jon Bonham - Drums
I think the vocal harmonies would be great. If Freddie ever got sick and couldn't do a gig Jim Morrison would substitute. Duane Allman makes frequent guest appearances on the road.

First off, every great band needs a producer.
Producer - Bruce Dickinson
Then it needs a great voice
Lead Singer - Ashley Simpson
Now it needs a master guitar player
Lead Guitar - Avril Lavigne (punk rock, tie-sporting era)
Then of course a bassist
Bass Player - Peter Townshend (Has no doubt followed Avril and Ashley through from their preteen years)
Now a sweet drummer
Drummer - Animal (of the muppets) (Think carter, his carisma, his smile, but more..double foot petal, hey we dont know how many feet animal has even got, i bet its more than two though)
Now someone on the keys, not an official member of the band, but a "guest who lives with them"
Keyboard - Paul Shaffer (anything so i dont have to see him on tv 5 out of 7 nights a week)

Actually Harrison was quite an accomplished sitar player. Seeing as he has more of the Western influence, he would be the better fit in a band of western musicians. If it was an eastern band, then yes Ravi would be the obvious choice.

Not trying to be a dick and start shit, but i'm just curious as to why you think he's not a good sitar player? You say comparitively speaking... compared to Ravi Shankar or compared to sitar players in general? Even Shankar was impressed with how dedicated and adept Harrison was at the Sitar. Anyway, i'm just wondering why you disagree... like i said, not trying to be a dick or start shit... just wondering. :)

My mistake... the dedication was in reference to his devotion to Indian spirituality. Though Shankar did have this to say about his playing -
"The only solid lessons on sitar he had from me were in the summer and autumn of 1966, which he couldn't pursue as much as we both wanted. He was very talented and would have become a great sitar player if only he could have given some time. His love, knowledge and understanding of Indian music developed immensely over the years."
Anyway....

I've thought about this many times...gotta go with...
Dave Matthews - Vocals, Rhythm Guitar (DMB)
Trey Anastasio - Vocals, Lead Guitar (Phish, TAB)
Victor Wooten - Bass (BFFT)
Carter Beauford - Drums (DMB)
John Hermann - Keys (Panic)
Rashawn Ross - Trumpet (Soulive)
Karl Denson - Saxophone (KD's Tiny Universe)
I feel like all their styles mesh well together, I could only imagine alot of what Dave and Trey would write together, and of course all the usual suspects would be guesting with them on any given night (i.e. Randolph, Tim, Bela, Gordon, Page, Roi, etc).

As much as I love Wooten, I actually think Gordon might be the better fit for that band for some reason... a little more subdued but just as much a virtuoso maybe?

I think Wooten is way better overall than Gordon, but it would be interesting to see how Gordon would fit with that group over Wooten. I guess I didn't just want to combine Phish and DMB, and Vic's the best out there in my opinion, so I said hey, why not? Haha. Maybe even put Claypool in there instead...

First off, I don't think Keith Moon is the best drummer ever. I put Bonham, Danny Carey, and Carter over him in a second.
Second, Trey is a better guitarist than Jerry. Period. Jerry did for the Dead and for jamrock what no one else could or ever will be able to do. But Trey is so much more diverse, fluid, and technically sound than Jerry. I love both artists, but you gotta go Trey over Jerry at this stage in the game.
