The suggestion to search is a good one, as this question has been asked a million times. Whenever you ask this question, you get a "well, I have a _____" reply.

The answer, as always, is to go to the guitar store, play all the guitars in your price range, regardless of brand, and buy the one that sounds and feels the best to you personally.

for 600-800 i would say don't waste your time with martins. low-end martins are not "where it's at." you could probably find a deal on some entry level taylors used for that price, but again, used guitars, internet...blah blah, not my style.

for 800 bucks you could get a damn nice-sounding tacoma...these guitars are not lookers, but they do sound really good--relatively and comparatively speaking.

there is quite a bit of variation in quality in the sub-1000 price range. usually the 200-400 is pretty shitty, entry level stuff. 5-700 is where you usually get out of the "expensive firewood" category.

look at all the name brands, and find one that you can play and like. odds are if dave picked up your guitar, it would still probably sound like dave playing because so much of it depends on personal style.

when you narrow your search down for some choices post them or send me a pm...i always love shopping for a new axe, even if it's not my own.

Try to find a deal on a no frills basic Larrive, that will be by far the best bet for about $800.

As a Taylor owner and fan, I strongly suggest getting a Larrivee instead at this price range.

Time to save up. I promise you will enjoy playing more, if you get a better instrument.....get the right one and you can look at it as an investment, istead of just something you want.

My Taylor 814 has gone up in value quite a bit over the last 5 years.

I like Garrison for that price a lovely sounding guitar. check out the various guitar reviews at www.harmony-central.com don't just ask this lot. Ask around.

And, yes, do pick up and play a bunch of guitars to see what feels nice. depending on your physical stature, you might find one type of guitar too heavy or might not like the balance it has. One of the many reasons not to buy guitars off ebay is that you can't hold them, play them and inspect them before you lay out the coin.

They sound even better plugged in. The reason I don't recommend them is cuz nobody seems to give them a serious chance. I love my Ovation, and I recently bought a new one to start playing out at gigs. The Martin stays at home, for recording and such. The Ovation plays out.

:thumbsup Good to know! I love how they sound, and I'm a fan of the "narrow" acoustics, like Ovations and T5's. But the Ovations are def. in my price range! I'll make sure to check it out a little more next time.

I have an Ovation T357 (http://www.iqmz.com/artwork/stefan/full/set001_0021.jpg). It's a really cool looking guitar, but i just doesnt sound full/rich enough for me. I'd sell it but I paid $520 for it I think only maybe 2 years ago and I've hardly played it, and I think I wouldn't get more than $350-$400 if I sold it. That wouldn't even be much of a start towards buying something good (I already have a Taylor worth about $2K so my next guitar down the road will probably be a high end Martin or maybe a higher end Taylor that I'm guessing will be $2.5-3.5K).

I really like the sound and feel of the ovations. though i have had two ovations and in both cases the wood began to cave in over time. I tried humidifing it and everything. Now i have a takamine. They are really great. Plus there cheeper than the martains and taylors.

the larrivee d-03 is the best guitar in that price range. i use it as a "campfire guitar." the next best is probably a taylor 200 series. the 312 for under $1000 is a steal if its in good condition. i would compare it to the larrivee though, as you would get a new guitar for about the same price. IMO the larrivee has a more balanced tone, taylors lack bass.

Contrary to an earlier comment, NOT all guitars sound the same. IMO buy something that is easy to play (nice action), looks nice to the eye according to your preference, and most of all pick one that sounds the best. Some like their guitars bright while others prefer a fuller/warmer tone.

For all of you acoustic guitar lovers who have the bucks or simply like to see what's out there on the high end, go to: http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com/. I bought my Taylor 714CE with a Cedar top there for about $250 less than anywhere else. This site is a gem and if you're lucky enough to live in SoCal, you have to check this store out in person.

I love how it plays and love how it sounds plugged in on stage. I personally like how Martin's sound unplugged but I like the Taylor on stage.

Yes it is made out of rosewood like the 800 and 900 Taylors, only the Martin has a MUCH lower grade of wood.

Martin doesn't make a highend guitar for under $2000 about any more, sorry.

Yep, and those are far over priced..you can get a FAR better guitar by Dana Bourgeois for that.

The only Martin that should ever be purchased is a vintage one. Though they make some decent highend ones still, they are way over priced and you can get a much better guitar for the money.

bourgeois guitars are out of this world. however, the martin d-18 golden era is actually not bad for the price. adirondack/mahogany for like $2300 at elderly instruments. however, if i were spending that much for an adirondack/mahogany guitar i would suck it up and spend an extra $500 or so for a bourgeois country boy.

I'd much rather have a used Bourgeois for 2,300 than any new Martin that retails for under 7Gs.

If the rosewood on my martin is a much lower grade of wood I cant tell. Have you ever played this martin with rosewood? The sound is sick it has great projection, superior sustain, and punches out a deep rich resonant sound that I swear RINGS FOR 30 SECONDS AFTER THE LAST STRUM. I hav a beautiful 1500 dol Taylor 414ltd koa that will be sitting awhile. So I am not comparing this guitar to a ibanez by any means. I am even gonna do some recording this weekend with the Martin. So the question was what was the best guitar in the 600 to 800 range? this one is by far!

I mean i got pretty lucky, back in the late 60's my father got a Guild M-20 for doing electrical work for a buddy, so that's what I learned on. I love, it I haven't played a guitar for less than $1000 that I would take over it. The only catch is it's a 2/3 size, they go for about 600-800 used, wonderful buy if you can find one. Mine is from 64' specifically.

Yes I have played a couple actually. The reason you can't tell the difference in wood quality, is most likely do to the fact you don't know a whole lot about wood.

Just like the 414ltd Koas don't have the same quality of Koa as the actual Koa series does. (and the actual Koa series costs $1,000 more because of it)

Also, Larrivee makes a MUCH better guitar for $800 than Martin does. There is no question about that.
