I really, really don't think so. Please, everyone, keep your expectations down for rare songs and all that crap for this show. Look what is happening to the OH people...they are all leaving shows dissapointed.

I think we can expect RR to come onstage(duh) and I, unfortuntely, predict it will be a mish mash of 08/25-08/26 with a couple other songs they have been playing this tour thrown in there.

By the way, i've got a ABI=>2 Step closer already in my head. Main set will potentially end wiht Smooth Rider then Bayou, both with RR. Other ideas in my head will develop as we near the show.

Bank on Idea of You, Can't Stop(two no duhs) and, probably, another new song.

My friend just called to tell me he got Gorge tix. He had asked me a while back if I wanted to go but I thought flying to Washington for a three day show and then catching the Hollywood Bowl right after would be too much. I regret not saying yes. What was I thinking! Stupid stupid stupid. Hollywood will kick ass though. Where's the Ants haning before hand?

I'll be hanging out in Pasadena before the show, probably visit some bars on Colorado. Catch a nice buzz, and then board the shuttle from Pasadena.

For people who are looking to drink before the show, there are a lot of bars within walking distance of the Hollywood Bowl. Pig and Whistle is probably the 'nicer' one, but there is also a dive bar literally down the street on highland...I can't remember the name all of a sudden...anyway, you can't miss it, it is sout of Franklin, north of Hollywood Blvd. and a neon sign saying 'cocktails' on it.

Anyway, I'm staying in SD after Chula Vista until monday afternoon, so I don't see myself drinking before this show.

this may have been asked before, but I'm not about to read 35 pages of posts.

It doesn't look like the current stage setup (video screen backdrops) would fit in that shell. Do you think DMB will bring any of their current setup, or will they just be using the house lights and screens? Sorry if this is retarded.

potitia
08-14-2006, 06:18 PM
no clue on how tight security is or isn't, but with the location, I would imagine the venue being pretty tight

I was just wondering about the stage setup myself - I really don't think they'll be able to fit the video screens.... but that's okay, cuz hopefully they'll just make room for the symphony or full horns sections....

So... midday on a Monday, coming from the south on 405N. Should I take 710 or 605 to get to the 5?

I have thought about this one, and I am at a loss. They both equally suck, with the 605 being the less sucky. I would have to say take the 605. The 710 us an older freeway, and there will be more big rigs on that freeway. (That freeway dumps right into the Long Beach Harbor heading west. All the ships offload onto the trucks, and, presto, Big Rig Hell.)

If you are driving with someone, the carpool factor will be a huge help. Expect the 5 into downtown LA to blow. The only possible saving grace about this show being on this Monday, this is the last full week of summer. People might be taking the week off, since Labor Day is the following Monday, so traffic may be easier. It may not, but let us think positively.

For all the people driving to this show, my fingers are cossed that this is the case. Have a great time. Hopefully I will see you at Irvine or Chula Vista.

Well, not necessarily at noon, I was thinking of heading out around 3:00pm or so. It will probably take an hour and a half to get up there with traffic (could be less, who knows). That should get us up there around 4-5, leaving a couple of hours for a good tailgate or dinner in Hollywood or whatever.

I guess we can take the 605 to the 5 then.

For you coming in from LAX to Orange County, you'll just take the 405 down the whole way.

Only 9 more days until the weekend starts!

Do you know something that the rest of us don't? Or are you thinking because last year at HDC N2, the setlist had Lie/Seekup, and they chose LIG, that this year they will make up for that?

Either way, good call. But I hope that they break it out in Irvine or CV first.

Another idea, which is great for a shortcut, is to take La Cienega instead of the 405. Well, you would have to take to 405 until LAX and then you can get off and find La Cienega straight up.

Here is a map at the corner of Century and La Cienega. I can't promise NO traffic, but it will be MUCH better!

According to Tim's website, he is Lubbock, TX on the 26th. So if he made an appearence in SoCal, I would guess that leaves only the Bowl as a viable option.

He starts up agian in Dayotn, OH on the 7th. My money would be on the Gorge, if it does happen, but I don't want to start any rumors. We all know how those things can get blown out of proportion here on Ants. LeRoi ring a bell?

And deep down inside I still hope that they might film that for a full show DVD. And this is completely unfounded, I'm just hoping, but with a history like this venue's it would be cool.

I know you are coming from Canada and all, but I don't think for a second this is going to be a DVD. I wish people would temper their expectations for this show all around...I honestly don't expect anything special, unless you count Robert Randolph guesting on a few songs.

I don't buy into any talk of Timmy taking that break in his tour schedule to jam with DMB. I think he took a break to take a break and have it coincide with the labor day holiday.

joekoch

Didn't mean to hype the show at all. I just have seen Ben Harper DVD shot at the Bowl and it looks like a great venue. That's the reason I'm going there. I'm sort of on a mission to check out great venues in the States, and DMB always delivers the good excuse, so I've been to Fenway, MSG, Red Rocks, San Fran (2004&2005), and the Gorge the last three years. So I'm just stocked to get to the Bowl; see DMB; be back in LA after 13 years (no metro back then, and the riots where just a half year past). I'll have a great time no matter what they play, so no worries. And sorry if I helped in hyping the show itself. I'm just stoked is all.

Hey, and there's always the chance the Roi and Dave show up to play that song that's going to be on the next Randolph CD.

I think it's pretty obvious that DMB will film for a DVD this tour. They haven't put out a full concert DVD since Central Park, although there was the DVD of highlights from Red Rocks. The AOL webcast doesn't reallly factor in, and even if it did, Dave's voice was awful.

I think Hollywood Bowl is definitely a possibility, but Cville's probably a stronger one.

That said, I'd rather they didn't film at the Bowl. This show's LA location will make it enough of a greatest hits night as it is.

But how well did their concert DVDs sell? I think they discovered the formula for live releases is what you see with the Gorge / Red Rocks releases...release nationwide a 2 disc CD set with 1 DVD and through the website have the whole show. I'm not saying they aren't going to do a DVD again, I'm just saying it doesn't 'need' to be anytime soon.

Hollywood Bowl is not a particularly special show. Honestly, really, I don't think it is. I would mark SPAC, Alpine, Fenway, Randall's, the Gorge and Charlotesville as 'bigger stops' than a ONE NIGHT stand at the Hollywood Bowl. They aren't at the bowl for something special...they are at the Bowl because they haven't sold out an LA show since HDC Night 1 in '03. The Bowl is a smaller venue(by about 14,000 seats). Now, they should have done 2 nights at the Bowl and skipped Irvine(discussion for a different thread) but thats beside the point.

Furthermore, many, many acts play the Bowl every year so this isn't even something special for the Hollywood Bowl. Additionally, I hope people sitting in anywhere but the boxes / pool understand the view from their seats(when speaking about distance ) is atrocious. Being in the super seats / benches is like being in the back of the HDC. You have been warned.

ALSO, a lot of us are seeing all 3 So-Cal shows. I'm not going to Irvine but, I predict, between the 3 shows you will see a total of about 40-45 different songs. None of these shows are two night stands and won't be considered as such by the band. Check out back to back shows in the same area from earlier this tour and you will have an idea. I fear, by the time the Bowl rolls around and you have been to Irvine and Chula Vista, you will have seen 85% of the songs the previous two shows. I just hope people understand this is a strong possibility because I would hate to come home from the Bowl the night of the 28th, go onto this thread and see complaints about how their seats were a mile away and they heard most of the setlist at Irvine and Chula Vista the previous 2 nights.

So, after that rant of negativity, I am honestly siked for next weekend. :hug

I don't know how well they sold. I always had the impression that their concert DVDs did fairly well as far as concert DVDs go. But you might be right, who knows?

I think I disagree. The Bowl is a somewhat special show because of the history of the venue. Even I in BC and originally from Germany had heard about the Bowl many many years ago. And if you have proof of your statement that they play there because they can't sell out HDC, then dismiss what I'm saying next. But I think that had nothing to do with their decision to play the Bowl. They just wanted to play the Bowl, because they never have before. So I think for them it's a bit more special than you give it credit. Certainly more special than all the other venues you mentioned as they play those every year. Doesn't mean that I expect an especially good show or setlist, but I still think the venue is more special than you give it credit.

Haven't been there, and I think I sit sort of half distance, but even if the view might be 'atrocious' I'm just psyched to make it to the Bowl as the photos I've seen, it looks like a great venue. Further evidence from the Ben Harper DVD that I recently watched.

Not sure. If you really look back at this tour all the one night stands in the same areas have been in the first leg of the tour and those shows were quite diverse in setlist. Only recently have the setlist been somewhat similar and those were in cities far apart, so I really don't agree. Doesn't mean that you're wrong. Guess we'll find out, but your argument sure doesn't work if you compare it to earlier this tour. Check out Toronto and Darien, June 13 and 14 respectively, quite different shows.

I fear, by the time the Bowl rolls around and you have been to Irvine and Chula Vista, you will have seen 85% of the songs the previous two shows. The negativity after the show will happen no matter what, unfortunately. But who cares? If I enjoy the show, and I'm sure I will, I don't care what the people who weren't even there and sit in front their computers have to say. And for the people who are there and complain, well too bad. But if seat location is such a big factor for someone, too bad. The atmosphere is still going to be great. But too many people always find something to complain, so don't worry, they'll find something, no matter what we think beforehand.

So, after that rant of negativity, I am honestly siked for next weekend. :hug
I'm psyched too. And by no means is my post intended to say that the show will be awesome, will be filmed, or anything. My expections are as always when I go to a show, and I still have the three nights at the Gorge the weekend after, so I'm all good.

Hope we all will have a good time.

I'm honestly not trying to start an arguement, just debating...

If you look through my posts in this thread, oftentimes I just ask people to not think something particularly special is going to happen at this show.

I sincerely believe the band's choice for the bowl is based around the lackluster attendance at the HDC. If you look at the so-cal shows a week before, the only seats available are lawn seats in Chula Vista. This has to be seen as a success, ticket-wise, by the band. Compared to last year where you could get decent seats to either HDC and Chula Vista(Chula Vista's pavillion didn't even sell out last year, did it?) the day OF the show and you have to see why they changed up the strategy. Again, I hope next year sees a two-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl, but again, different thread.

So, anyway...if you allow me to lower your expectations on the view it won't be that bad;). You are right about the negativity...but I feel like my two main concerns(repeated songs and OMG the Hollywood Bowl's view sucks) will be tempered if people know what to expect going in.

No hard feelings, I agree we were debating. And as I really don't know what the reason is why they play the Bowl, I will stop guessing. And I agree, let's keep the expections lower on these boards, as otherwise the same will happen as at Fenway, when I came back from the first night, checked these boards and was shocked.

Still hoping all will have a good time.

Big rigs = major suckage. I actually would not even get close to the 5 if you're coming from the 405. I would take the 405 to the 110 then take the 101 to the Bowl.

Jammin' at the Bowl to DMB from a side box in 8 days, baby! :hump

It's probably more a matter of business, they could have juggled the dates to get HDC. I've read that DMB had a 3 year contract with HDC. It was up, they decided not to renew. I'm sure they knew that Coran was selling out to LiveNation when they were planning this tour, so avoiding Clear Channel Venues was no longer a priority, thus returning to Irvine was a possibility (see also the NorCal return to Shoreline). Irvine would probably have seen a 2 night stand if Hollywood Bowl. Or I could be full of BS.

Anyways, I'm flying down just for the show at the Bowl, and have kinda mediocre tickets in N2, but I'm looking forward to it. Never been to the Bowl before, and it's gotta be better than HDC. I'd be more worried if this were the only show I was seeing this summer, but I'll be at Shoreline both nights, and Raley Field as well. Hooray!

Dude, make sure the cab DOESNT take Highland or Hollywood. Have him take Franklin all the way down and have him drop you off on the corner of Franklin and Highland. Then you can walk from there. Believe me, that will save you some cash and a headache.

believe me, i drive franklin to highland every saturday night. I would not even dare be in any vehicle in that area if I didnt have to. I take the 101n and get off at cahuenga. Then take that onto franklin. Plan on hoping out of the cab as soon as it hits the backedup traffic. That is unless people are going to party early at Big Wangs or something. Then I'll get into the area much earlier. all in all, should cost me under 10 bucks. Anyone want to drive me home? ;)

DONT DISS A TRUE SPORT...

Huh? Don't diss a true sport? I'm confused? Are you talking about soccer?

I merely relayed a story about how, when I worked for the San Diego Spirit (a SOCCER team in the now-defunct WUSA) as the Community Relations Managers, my old boss, who was the Spirit's Director of Operations, moonlit as a Producer for the Chivas game. While she was doing her job on the field, a Chivas fan threw a bag of piss at her. It was gross.

If you are talking about "dissing" a sport, and the sport in question is soccer, then you need not worry about me, of all people, speaking unhighly of it, since I:

- Worked for US Soccer
- Worked for San Diego Spirit
- Was on the Press Operations Team for Women's World Cup '99
- Was event coordinator for the WUSA All-Star Game
- Hold my USSF National Coaching License

So yes, no worries of dissing, just not a big fan of unruly, urine-throwing, Chivas fans. :)

So... midday on a Monday, coming from the south on 405N. Should I take 710 or 605 to get to the 5?
Actually the 605 to the 5 is probably your best bet. I live off the 605 & the 5.. and usually make good timing to Lakers games (& even Dodgers games). The 5N goes against traffic & USUALLY moves OK (it's the 5S that's horrible) ... the 101 is what you should worry about...

I also work off the 110 & Florence... the 110 is HORRIBLE! If I head to L.A. from work, I take the streets.

Which ever way you go, it's good idea to print out an area map. So if you need to, you can navigate through the streets.

BTW.. I saw Gwen Stefani @ the Hollywood Bowl.. Our tixs were in the VERY back & it sucked. ---- but it wasn't necessarily due to the Venue ---- Gwen just didn't do it for me... she needed to step it up <-- something DMB won't have any problem doing! It did get better as I got closer (& drunker) though. ;)

I think we ended up leaving about 5:30pm & got there w/ enough time to enjoy some beer before going in. -- It was actually good timing because we got GREAT parking!

Another story in support of the 5 N FWY ...

When DMB played Staples... I was getting our Irvine tix & my friend was getting our Staples tix... I found out the DAY OF the concert she never came through w/ the tix!! :eek :mad (when did she think she was going to tell me????)

(at this time I lived in Whittier = Land of NO FWYS!)

Frantically rushed to my parents (closest place from where I was) & started searching for a tix online... was going to pay $200 for a tix, but decided to just go home, get ready, & get a tix down there...

Got home about 5-5:30pm.. checked tixmaster again.. they released more tixs!! Rushed to the nearest tixmaster outlet... bought my tix... then went home & got ready...

Left about 7:30pm... got gas.. by the time I got to the 5 FWY it was 8:00pm!! I expected to hit a lot of traffic & miss some of the show...

Turns out the 5 & the 10 were BEAUTFUL!! Got to Staples about 8:25pm... found parking right around the corner for $3.00!!! ... I got in.. got a beer.. & got to my seat JUST IN TIME for the start of the show!

I had a blast that night! Everything fell into place!

(as for my friend ... she's been blackballed :banned )

Just saw the Irvine setlist. For me, it looks quite mediocre. Now I know each of us has our own "favorite" songs, but Satellite, Dreamgirl, and Proudest Monkey are among my least favorite DMB songs.

This bodes well for the Bowl. Assuming they dont repeat songs....

I'm still hoping for Seek Up, Hello Again, Two Step, and a good ABI. And not more than 3 Stand Up songs (including Hello Again and ABI).

So what are we getting at Hollywood, people? A "fan" setlist (Last Stop, JTR, Pig, secret surprises like a new song debut of the song they sound checked in Chula) or a "bow-down-to-the-corporate-mucky-muck-Hollywood-industry-crowd" set list (Everyday, Crash, WAYG, DG...)

Predictions?

Thanks for all the info you can help with.

I've been listening to KROQ in the last month maybe 2 announce a beach clean up where they've been playing "Work It Out" by J5 featuring Dave.

And J5 is to do a concert. I thought nothing of it, seeing as Dave wasn't on tour with J5 of course, and the band was on their summer tour. However it wasn't until I actually listened to the commercial today, saying that the J5 concert was today in Venice, that I thought it could be a possibility that Dave actually came out with J5 to sing Work It Out. The band has a day off before the Bowl, and the trip to Venice really isn't much of a trip. I know it's a long shot, but has anybody heard if Dave was at Venice today, that would've been pretty amazing.

Even more, what would everyone think if J5 came out with the band tomorrow. I know this probably won't happen, but what would everyone's thoughts be?

Thats all i have, I don't really want to start any rumors. Just listing a coincidence in the time for the concerts.

I heard this on AM 570, from Money and Joe Grande. So I don't know how true this was. They were talking about the weekend shows, saying DMB in Irvine. And Money was saying how proud he was that fans in LA didn't sell out the Idols show, and that He Digs the Dave Matthews Band, it was nice to hear while i was in the parking lot in Irvine.

Please don't stalk the band, they don't appreciate that much :twak
hehehe...I would think the local motel 6 down on sunset is a nice enough place for them to stay. They have a great pool.
