I just got an HDTV not too long ago and I can't wait to catch all the games this season in HD. I like the vibe from this year's team. I dont necessarily agree with the detractors pointing out that this team is still aging. Piece by piece they are getting younger and the players who are older are still capable of producing, so what's the problem?

CC is really struggling today

No life on his fastball...and not just velocity (though that too), there is little movement.

And too many off-speed pitches in fastball counts. Specifically, 2-2 breaking pitches.

It's going to keep happening until A-Rod gets back. The lineup is pitched to entirely different. And Matsui is by NO MEANS a 4-hitter.

Throw FASTBALLS.

Teixeira's BA the 5 years before coming to NY:

More like BB Sabathia, AMIRITE!?!>!>1L!>!

But seriously, today was pretty bad. I still say Swish is a much, much better option for this team. The thing we really lost in Abreu and Giambi was OBP. If the two had equal playing time, I could pretty much guarantee Swish's OPS would be higher than Nady's. BA is such a useless stat, but I have to think it's really the only thing holding Swisher back. Sure he'll probably hit .265, but his OPS could be a solid .150 above Nady.

I just re-read what I had said, and I made it sound like he went on and on about it. That's not quite the case. What I meant was that he had mentioned more than once that it'd be cool to play in his hometown, and then when they pursued him (from a Orioles perspective) only to see him bolt for a few more millions to the "evil empire" who could blame the Baltimore fans for being upset about it...

Sorry for the confusion.

I was listening to Francesa after game 1, he was pretty funny. He did a 15 minute sarcastic rant after hearing Yankee and Met fan reactions to opening day, saying the Mets will probably win about 130 games and have the division clinched in July, and how the Yankees need to instantly trade Sabathia and Texeira, and fire Girardi by Friday.

Well, hopefully AJ Burnett can salvage this series today. I make no predictions though, as I'm usually way off and the pitcher does terrible when I do (see CC Sabathia).

Of course he mentioned it. He was a free agent. He was trying to drive up his price tag. Boras knows how to play the game.

According to reports I've read, Baltimore was $40 million short of what NY offered, and they didn't match Boston, LA or Washington either. When you have the lowest offer among suitors and you have a sub-par team, you really can't expect him to sign with you.

I'm not saying O's fans can't boo. They have every right to. But if any Oriole fan really believed he was going to sign there for $20-40 million less than teams like Boston, NY and LA were offering, they were delusional.

I think any reasonable Oriole fan would be upset that Tex didn't end up in Baltimore, but I think they would also be upset that the O's didn't offer him nearly enough money to consider coming here. I mean, there are things such as a home-town discount, but 40 mill just isn't a reasonable difference. Texiera would have been an idiot to come to Baltimore for that less money, and in reality the Union wouldn't have allowed it. I think that Baltimore fans are just boo-ing Texiera because he ended up with the Evil Empire, and because he's a hometown guy with the Yankees, it's almost like he's a traitor.

And then again, I'm sure there are a lot of Orioles fans who don't know the numbers connected to it, or even the story behind it, and once some fans start booing they just join in the party.

Hey, remember when I really wanted Gardner and Swisher to start in the OF the day after we got Tex? This would be why. The thing we lost when Abreu and Giambi left, more than power, is OBP (so really OPS). Yes, Nady's career average is .280 to Swish's .244, but anyone who knows anything at stats knows that BA is about as worthwhile stat for a hitter as wins are for a pitcher. Nady's career OPS is .793, which is an OPS+ of 108. Swish? .807, OPS+ of 112, and that includes his horrific season last year. So 2 years younger than Nady, more flexible than Nady, and a higher career OPS than Nady. But no, Nady played sorta well at the end of last year, we better give him a job. :rolleyes :lol

im not saying he's an all star but this is the same case as a few years ago. we didnt have a first basemen so we played freakin miguel cairo when we had carlos pena in AAA hitting pretty well. they didnt call him up and released him later. he was unemployed. now he's an all-star. the one thing that really sets the new teams apart from the old is the depth and the ability to have guys who can play when others get hurt. its not a hard move, sign him for a month then dump him or release him.

As far as I'm concerned, we're tied for first right now. Baltimore isn't as bad as they were last year, but there's no way they're this year's Rays. And Toronto is legitimately awful. So being tied with the Rays and one ahead of Boston isn't bad for the first week of the season.

Been gone all weekend.

Good to see CC bounce back after the dismal first start, and hopefully Andy can keep it coming like he did the other day. That was surprising.

Another reason why I do not like Girardi...Yanks are down 4-0 in the 2nd against Kazmir. We all know the rays have a speedy team and Posada may struggle this year throwing out runners. And he elects to pitch out not once, but twice, making the count 2-0...and Wang eventually walks him. Terrible job by Joe.

And Wang looks terrible again.

Well I know that. My point is I can't stand when Girardi overmanages. No need to pitch out...twice in a row.

When your starter goes a whopping 1 innings, relief gets thin near the end.

Whoo boy! Wang has 2 starts, and a grand 4.2 innings pitched thus far this season. He's killing it this year.

Swish's future:

2009 - 48 home runs, .320 BA, world champion
2015 - Locks up his 5th championship w/ the Yankees
2016-2020 - 4 Cy young awards
2021 - Manager of the Yankees'
2030 - 9 successful years as manager. Buys team from steinbrenner.
2035 - Yankee Stadium renamed 'Swisher Sweet Stadium'
2050 - Swisher passes away, New York Yankees renamed New York Swishers
3 days later...Swisher rises from the dead, hits 100 home runs

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE, 12:55 p.m.: Nothing official yet, but the word is that Xavier Nady will need surgery and miss the season.

UPDATE, 1:47 p.m.: We just spoke to Nady. He didn’t want to say too much until he sees the team doctor in NYC tomorrow. But he indicated that the MRI showed a tear and surgery will be needed.

My comment had nothing to do with who won the game, and it had nothing to do with the standings a WEEK AND A HALF into the season. I can tell you if the roles were reversed, I wouldnt be posting standings daily, because I know it's a WEEK AND A HALF into the season. But hey, to each their own I guess.

My Crawford comment had to do with breaking up Burnett's no-no.

It's a week and a half into the season...I find it hilarious that Yankees fans are acting as though the season is over. I realize that you guys want to win the division, but with the way you act, it's like all you care about is finishing ahead of Boston.....

We do. If we finish ahead of Boston, we're in the playoffs. It's that easy. The AL East will get the wild card, so as long as we beat either the Rays or the Sawx, that's all we need. And which is a better rivalry to continue, the 100 year one, or the one with a team that has 1 solid season under their belt? :lol
