I may be asking a dumb/bad question but im curious and I am jsut checking to make sure I am not making a mistake. When I use a chord finding program they list the option of variation...meaning I can for example have a few different ways to play an A like the actual formation of the chord. Anyway, my question is with a song Tangerine..the G chord I usually form is (low E to High E) 3-2-0-0-0-3, but I saw it can be played a different way...which is correct or what should I use, what I learned and is most comfortable...Thanks for the help/answer in advance.

the two common ways to play an open G chord are:
3-2-0-0-0-3
or
3-2-0-0-3-3
so what you're playing is totally fine. of those two variations, either will sound fine in the song, and you can interchange them at will. it doesn't add a new note, it just doubles a note that's already sounding elsewhere in the chord.
you could play plenty of other stuff that would sound fine (sus chords or partials), but what you're playing is perfect.

G can also be played as:
3-5-5-4-3-3

yes.
and interestingly enough, the "perfect chord" is the C-shape
I-III-V-I-III
i think anyway. i'm no good with theory.:(

Heh. Don't feel that way. It'll come in time. Just play your G the way that feels best for you and sounds good.

it would sound like a G note-wise, because you're playing the notes associated with a G major chord (G, B, D) - but variations sound different from each other obviously, because you're either adding extra notes or playing those notes higher or lower that usual. if you played the song and suddenly threw a x-x-0-7-8-7 or x-10-12-12-12-x into the middle of tangerine, it might not sound right depending on how you do it.

like the C-shape has the root note. than the third. then the fifth. then the root one octave higher. than the third one octave higher. in that order.
like the d-shape for example, has the root, the fifth, the root again, then the third.
the a-shape has the root, the fifth, the root, the third, and the fifth.

I've quit playing B like x-2-4-4-4-2 because I just can't get it to sound right.
I play it as 7-9-9-8-7-7 and it's alot easier barre shape.

I don't even play the F# note on the high e half the time. When I do nail it cleanly I'm always surprised.

Yeah, I'm just not a fan of the A-style barre chords.
Give me a E/Am-style barre chord any day.

Learning chords seems daunting at first but after a whole lot of practice and playing with other people it will be a revelation when you start to see the patterns. There is only 12 notes in music(and about 8 octaves). Think about a piano keyboard, from the left to right music goes up in pitchlo w to high same as the guitar. There are also only maybe 60 chord shapes,it all where you place the shape. When you see chord books that have 800 chords its only the shapes in different places. Stick with the basic chords and get them down till you can play them in your sleep. Those seven chords A.B,C,D,E,F,G MAJOR turn into 72 chords (6strings X 12 frets).
When I was starting out I would play B x-x-4-4-4-2. Although Bm is the more common chord which is x-x-4-4-3-2(e-a-d-g-b-e) use your index on high e,middle finger on b, pinkie on on g, ring on d.
I hope this helps a bit, I like to help if I can. any questions I'll try to answer them.

I'm 32 and have playing for 16 years, started with flute from grade 7 till high school band in grade eleven( I was also a linebacker so don't think its pussy ). started playing bass at 15 guitar at 17, and have been playing ever since. My band played our first real show 2 weeks ago. It went really well we had 140 people, all ages from 19-65, by the 2nd set we had people up moving which suprised me. Everyone gave us praise, and a week later I got a couple emails, people are interest for more shows or if we had any Cds for sale. So we,re going back in the studio, and were booking some shows.Drift:evil :devil :freak :cool

Don't get overwhelmed with all the formations. You don't have to memorize everything.
What you should though is figure out what other chord these are formed from.
Some are in the D form, some the C form, some G and some A.
The best thing to do is learn the theory. Learn how the chords work and why they are what they are. Then you can take any chord and easily transpose it up the neck to a different key.

I'm currently unemployed, I went to school for CAD/Inventor modeling, but I can't seem to find anything. I've been bouncing around from temp job to temp job. I also do art. I've done a few murals, and some signs. I just want to be a self sustaining artist, preferably in music

it's tough to get there for most people. it takes awhile of building yourself up to that point.

I see what you are saying. thanks for the clarification.
