View Full Version : Took a stab at Bartender - recording

First off, this was done in less than 10 minutes, I just layed down the two tracks to hear how well it would be recorded, and to get just the idea down.

Track one is a similar Bartender rhythm, and the second track was attempting to be Tim Reynolds-esque. Unfortunately I think it sounds way too outer-space like, and at times it gets very harsh.

Note: I'm going to spend time this weekend trying to do it right, aka keep the guitars in time :lol

But hey, if you could give it a listen that would be awesome.

Good idea, it is a little all over the place for my tastes, though. I guess I like tighter music, if you could tighten it up but keep that experimental flare, that would be cool. The tim reynolds type thing is cool in the beginning but then gets annoying, around 2:00 it sounds kinda cool, but still all over the place. This might appeal to someone who is incredibly high. But for the sober john, it might be annoying. I can hear the passion you put into this though, which counts for a lot.

Yea, I realize that it was all over the place, I didnt even practice the "Tim" part, just plugged in my wah and tried to make some noise.

As I said above, this weekend I'm going to re-do it, getting a more accurate sound instead of the complete randomness that it is now.

Funny, I was just thinking of recording Bartender myself. I like it actually. The echo on the main track kind of gets me a bit because the echo makes it sound like the timing is all fucked. Either way, I think once you work on it its gonna be really cool.

Simply stated, you have poor rhythm.

Very much so :lol I am lazy and never count/tap foot/attempt to stay in time.

I'm working on it though ;)

Yeah if you tighten it up a bit it'll rock. Also I'd bring the crazy guitar fill stuff down in the mix a bit. I'm also thinking of doing a recording of bartender here pretty soon. Thinking of using loops of wine glasses ringing as the "violin" intro. We shall see...

Do you have something that you play that you could show us?

yeah, it's not even just a problem with timing (like speeding up or down) - it's also an issue with actually knowing how the guitar part goes, how to strum, and how to count. the rhythm part is actually pretty painful to listen to because it's so incredibly off.

the "lead" part is obviously just noise for the sake of seeing what kinds of noises can be made. those work in moderation, but this ended up getting really old really fast.

So because I didnt play it exactly the way Dave Matthews plays it, it is horrible? :freak

God damn, most people here were at least somewhat helpful, but you, you show no remorse for something that was made in a short amount of time.

Just noise? Obviously. I used a slide and a wah, not much else to do but make noise on a track that is only a few minutes long.

But since you think you are the expert, I'll take your word.

And for anyone that cares I've been playing the guitar off and on for about a year, I dont have alot of time to play because of school and sports.

Oh my bad, UPandDOWNstrum. I was not trying to be an asshole at all. I was just critiquing. I'll put up some music tomorrow for you.

I do like what you did with the lead parts, but the volume was way too high.

As for the rhythms of the normal guitar part...as other have said, it is off by a lot. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's not anywhere close to the actual song. You strum the verse and the chorus with the same pattern. And it's not that you strum the chorus like the verse, or the verse like the chorus, it's as though you made up your own rhythm, got it stuck in your head (or hands) and just went with it.

not at all. in fact, it would be refreshing if someone offered a new take on a DMB song that wasn't, "here's me playing exactly like dave!!" the problem with this is that you were trying to play like dave and were unable to make it work. grabbing a metronome (and knowing how to use it properly) could help you a ton.

God damn, most people here were at least somewhat helpful, but you, you show no remorse for something that was made in a short amount of time.

remorse? that doesn't really make any sense. you asked for opinions. i gave mine. sorry if you don't like it, but i don't think this was very good. and in my opinion, actually knowing what you're doing wrong and what could be worked on helps a lot more than, "hey man, awesome job!"

Just noise? Obviously. I used a slide and a wah, not much else to do but make noise on a track that is only a few minutes long.

yes, just noise. there wasn't much substance to it, which is why it went on too long. as i said, that kind of thing has its place, and worked here for a bit, but it just went on for way too long.

But since you think you are the expert, I'll take your word.

okay.

And for anyone that cares I've been playing the guitar off and on for about a year, I dont have alot of time to play because of school and sports.

that's fine. as you play more you'll keep getting better. but it's pretty clear that when you do have time to practice, you should really try it with a metronome or try to play along with the songs you're trying to learn so you have some help with timing and rhythm. it's not like it's a problem to be in the middle of learning how to do something, but if you put some sort of recording out there and ask people to listen, you should expect people to respond.

i didn't mean any offense by asking how long you had been playing. i just wanted a frame of reference so i could fairly judge your work. if you had been playing guitar for 5 years, that would have been complete crap. but all things considered, you did an alright job.

all I am saying is that criticism is great as long as it's constructive not just made to be a dick. There are nice ways to tell someone something sucks...tell them what to work on etc, but do it in a positive way.

*shrug*

if i see little to nothing about it that's redeeming, i'm not going to try to sugar coat it. you can't put stuff out there and just expect people to say "good job" and be done with it. don't ask for opinions if you don't want them is pretty much how i look at it.

It's ok....i've played guitar for like 5 years, and i'm no pro, and I won't pretend like I am. I consider myself an above average guitar player, and you sound like you can play pretty well, my only critique on it is that the timing is off compared to the actual Bartender.

Keep up the good work though.
