I dont know how many of you have ever seen a band where they all throw their instunments around their bodies but I was wondering If anyone here can do that. If you do, what is the best way going about practicing this without hurting yourself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Don't do that. Unless you're heavy emo.

why?
when you perform there are things that you do during the show. . . that is called stage presence. . . . wheather you throw a guitar or jump off your bassist's cabnet or hit a cymbol with the top of your bass head or hop around. Its whatever you do when you are jamming.

Really? You dont like it when dave dances like he does. Anything you do on stage is stage presence. Is jumping around or moving all over lame. If its something you do when you jam then why is it lame? I dont know maybe it is lame. . . but thats just me

I think it might be hard to do unless you are wireless with your guitar...you don't want a cable winding it's way around you neck!

I know a kid who was swinging his guitar around during a performance and got hit in the head and got a bunch of stitches near his eye. It ain't cool, don't do it.

I both agree and disagree with a lot of you guys. But first...

Throwing your guitar around your neck is not hard. You must have a wireless that is connected to your strap to do it. I've never done it in a show and probably never will because it's not my personality and my guitars just mean too much to me. But I've done it at home just to see if I could and it's easy. Also, you must have straplocks on your guitar. Make sure they are tight. Practice it outside or somewhere with a lot of room. I was really careful the first few times I did it by guiding the guitar to see where it would go and then I just started flinging it. Playing and catching it right away is tough though so it is a talent to see guys do it well.

Now, on the whole stage presence thing. I've played a lot of shows in my life as well as having been to sooo many. Seeing bands with no personality is not fun. But it is also refreshing to hear people trying to take the humble approach. But I also think that approach is just as conceited. "I'm too cool to put in on the line or try and put on a good show." There is a fine line between between stage presence and being an ass on stage. For example, if DMB were to dance synchronized moves on stage during a song, everyone would love it because DMB wouldn't take it seriously and it would be funny. However the problem lies in so many bands and performers taking themselves so seriously thinking their moves are so cool or their trying to show off. And that brings to mind both the music of recent like emo rockers or boy bands dancing or even makeup and costumes from the 80's. Soulive wore suits in the beginning to make an impression and it was very classy(and a good move on their part). Phish used to do little dance moves on stage. Neither were dumb, they were just putting on a good show. Dave's dancing is stage presence. And from day one, he knew what it would do, he's not dumb. But he just did it cause he felt. So all I have to say is, if you feel like throwing your guitar around your neck cause your feeling it, then do it. If you just wanna show people that you can do it and how many times or how fast you can do it, then pass. Jimi playing with his teeth or SRV playing behind his back was not done for their sonic merits. It was just good showmanship. It was not corny.

I played a show at this place in Detroit called The Shelter a few weeks ago. It was me www.myspace.com/spudchabaz and pretty much just young punk bands. I put the link in to show you the humor in that. All these kids were doign what I think you are talking about. I was admittingly drunk and high, and my friends were making fun of me with my eyes wide and my mouth hanging open while watching them. They said, havent you ever seen that before? I said fuck no, not at all. I thought it was kinda cool until I found out it is a common shtick. I just dont understand how you would do that for an hour and a half and not feel miserable. Sorry to get so off topic:thumbsup

maybe people enjoy doing that on stage. Who are you to say if something is a "put on" or not. You cant just go on a stage and do whatever comes to you. you have to let the band know a little outline of what you might do. If not the sage would be chaos. A lot of times people will say "im gonna be here when we play this part and do this for a couple of measures" and it works out great. You are in no place to judge wheather stage presence is genuine or not unless you are the person. That is why they are called performances. YOu are performing for people.

you can try to learn all the cliche tricks in the world and still have no stage presence, and having cues during songs or 'performances' has nothing at all to do with what you are talking about. good luck with your side show of a band and we'll all look forward to hearing your tales of how wonderful the money pit of a guitar the chet atkins has been for you(if you get one/or have one).

well, that wasn't meant to be an insult so much as it was just an observation. you've made about a billion mistakes in this thread. that post was just an example that i picked. you could obviously stand some further education. or i guess you could still be in high school and haven't taken that many english courses yet. i mean, most of this would be elementary or junior high level stuff, but again, i don't know if idaho is behind the curve.

so no, that's not the best i can do. though being asked that by a guy who tried to pull out the line "you are a bag of douche" seems very humorous to me. perhaps my game was a little better with my response to that post, which you seem to have left out of your little jubilee of quotes.

yes, we're all aware of it being a horribly clichéd dane cook phrase that the young kids still think is funny. the point still stands - you're trying to call someone out about something being the "best that they can do," when the best that you can apparently do is copy some lame dane cook line.

Second of all who cares what kind of grammatical or other english errors people make?

i think it's funny because it helps to weed out idiots.
