Whats up everyone? Sorry for asking dumb questions but I have been a DMB fan for a year or two. My friends formed a little band in which they play mainly DMB music. There is guitar/guitar/bass/drums/and vocals. They have been bugging me to learn violin or mandolin so I can hop in the band. I know absolutely NOTHING about musical instruments. Which is easier to learn? Which songs does Boyd use the mandolin? Is it harder to pick up than guitar is? I tried guitar for a few weeks and I found it pretty difficult. I have a lot of free time because I am out of school and only work 1 day a week and its my summer vacation and im only 17. So please, those who have knowledge on this subject, help me out!

You will not learn the violin in a year. Not well, at least. I have been playing the mandolin for about a year and I'm good at it, but I've been playing the guitar for decades, so it makes it easier, I allrady have the chops for it. You can try, but it won't come easy.

Which instrument is the quickest to learn that actually sounds good in a band that plays a lot of dmb music?

Boyd only plays that electric gay mandolin. It's not even real. If you try to learn the violin you will suck very badly for a long time, I promise. The mandolin will be easier to learn, but will not fit in with another DMB clone.

Harmonica might be your best bet.

besides an average violin would run you like 4 grand. And an average mando with electronics is like 500-800 bucks. Harmonica is a good suggestion. Just get the John Popper belt and have like 25 of them.

yeah, if you know nothing about musical instruments like you said, you will have a hard time picking anything up and jumping into a band. you may have to sit this one out.
