I'm sorry this question may have already been addressed. When I was at home I was able to use Bitlord with no problem what so ever and now I am here at school and it shows that the torrent is active and in some cases it will even start "download" however it will not bring in any of the files....Would this be because of the firewall that the school's system has? and if so is there anyway to get around it? I just called the IT Services department here and they had no clue what I was talking about with torrents, I wasnt surprised cause when I needed to make a boot disc I knew more about it than they did

OK guys, i have a question, probably a stupid newbie thing, but nevertheless i cannot figure it out no matter what i do.
My downloads were going fairly smoothly in Azureus for quite a while. I came to college in september and they were all yellow faces, but i figured that was because of the university network. I played with some settings to get back to green, and it didnt work. So i reset to what i had before and now all my faces are red. I cannot connect to anything at all. All of my settings are exactly how they were before. Since opening a new port is probably not an option due to the firewall the school probably has in place, does anyone have an ideas how to get back to yellow or even green? Any help would be appriciated. I was about halfway done with the 9-11, 9-12 shows when this happened and they were both good shows and im quite perturbed. Thanks guys

OK, another question. My dad has a router. I have tried every damn way, but nothing is working. Here is the thing. He works for American Honda, being the huge corpoation it is, he is not able to upgrade his computer, which has Microsoft 1998. Anyway, his computer is too old, and doesn't ahve the software to open up ports! :lorraine The reason I need to use his computer is because it is the only one capable of opening up ports!!!!! So here is what I was thinking, I get my sister's laptop(windows XP) and hook it up to the router. Then I do the work to open up a port on the router, then put my dad's computer back.
Will this work?

Does anybody know what this means:
"Problem connecting to tracker - (11001, 'getaddrinfo failed')"?
I mean, I kind of have an idea, but I don't know what to do about it. This has been a very frusterating process.
THANK YOU to whoever can do something to help me out!

Another problem, on BitTornado, its saying "Connection limit eceeded! You may only leech from one location at a time!" And there has been a black dot for hours. I also had a red face on Azureus forever. I was DL from a source of 200 seeders! There's no way no one was on. Can anyone help? A PM would be nice, since I'll be asking more questions. THANKS!!!!!!

Have you done decode? I just did my first one the other day, have NO idea how I did it, but it worked. The other thing I seem to remember is that it was pretty automatic. I don't know that I saw it do anything, they were just converted so it may be that they are already wav files. (I don't REALLY know what I am talking about, but I can understand the confusion!!)

Okay, so I just read all 9 pages of this thread and I did not see my problem answered. I am hoping that someone can help me.
I downloaded Azureus, set my ports for my router, turned off the firewall on XP, and downloaded my first show last night. I did not have any problems downloading and it took about 4 hours (with DSL connection).
Now when I am trying to seed it I have a blue face and at the bottom left of the screen I have a red dot that says " Possible NAT (TCP) problem, refer to the Wiki if this persists" and I have a yellow one right next to it that says "There apears to be a problem with the Distributed Databases UDP Porting Map (NAT)"
All that I have read here says that a NAT problem is with a firewall or router, and I have set the ports forwarding on my router and closed down the xp firewall. Are there any other suggestions? I have MSN as my browser and maybe they have a built in Firewall, but I do not know how to access if they do. And also, I have 3 computers hooked up to my router, do I need to go into each computer and turn off each firewall, even though I will not be downloading from those other computers?
Thanks for any suggestion, I am a newbie to downloading and I really hope that I can get it up and running.

Hey everyone. This has probably been asked 1000 times but I'm lost. I've downloaded the torrent and the FLAC software, but I still don't understand how to covert it using the software. The torrent is saved on my desktop and I'm trying to add the files to the FLAC software to convert but am unable to do it. All the files I downloaded are saved as a .flac If anyone can help that'd be great. Thanks. :hump

Ok. I've encountered my first serious problem with bitorrent. I'm pretty computer savvy and I wouldn't post unless I absolutely was at a loss. So here's the problem: my upload/downlaod rates have slowed to a snail's pace. Up until about a week ago I was uploading/downloading at rates of upto 100 kb/s. Now, all of a sudden, I'm at maximum 15 kb/s. Sometimes I'm just at 0 kb/s. I use bitcommet. I tried switching to Azureus, then ABC, then utorrent, all without success. I am completely connectable - my XP firewall is down, I don't have a router, no NAT issues (as far as I can tell), etc., etc. I seed/leech about 7 torrents at once. So, I don't think I'm pushing my bandwith to its max. I don't have other programs that might be interfering with me in any way. I haven't installed any new programs or done anything that might have otherwise caused me any problems. My service provider imposes a limit of approx. 100GBs/month for uploading/downloading. So far this month I have used up 54GBs. So that's not a problem.
So, I'm stuck. Has anyone else encountered/solved a similar problem? Any help is appreciated.

There should be an ETA in your program. And if you are a seed, that means you have all the files, so you are either mistaken, or it's done. :)

After you've installed Az., double click the torrent file. It should open Az. automatically and begin downloading (you may want to change the location of where it puts the download in the Az. options).

First of all, I am really new to this so I apologize if this post is retarded. I downloaded Azureus and have been able to download a show. I tried port forwarding but it turns out I have a private IP. I called my ISP and they told me I would have to get a public IP and it's, of course, going to cost me. I plan on doing this, but not at the moment due to the fact that I just can't afford it. What I want to know is, am I seeding? It shows that I am connected to peers while seeding. I just don't want to be a leech. Thanks.:)

Now I am definitely not seeding. I dowloaded a show last night and my download speed stayed around 50 kb/s. My upload speed was mostly 0 but would sometimes go to 4 or 5 kb/s. After the d/l was finished my upload completely stopped. It says seeding but I am not connected to anyone and my speed is a constant 0. I have downloaded two other shows and my upload and download speeds were both around 30 kb/s. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. Well, were there any peers trying to download the show? If you jump on a torrent late and there are a bunch of seeds and only one or two peers, your ratio won't really be great because there are so few people downloading. Or alternately, you could be the only one downloading, so there's nobody else to upload to.
If you saw that you were uploading at 30 kb/s on other torrents, then I'd say that you are at least partially able to seed. Out of curiousity, just run the NAT test. It's under the Tools menu. See what it says. I have a feeling you may not be connecting totally perfectly, but good enough to at least seed a bit. Let me know what it says and I hope this helps a bit. ;)
I downloaded a couple of shows from azureus and in both of them the same thing happened. They were flac shows, and when I put them into flac frontend and tested them it said they were valid, but it shipped with an md5 file, and none of the files passed. They all failed immediately. I'm really not sure why this is happening. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks,

This could sound like a stupid question, but it's easy to do. Were the shows actually done downloading? As soon as you open the torrent in Az, the files will appear wherever you're saving them, making it look like they're all done, but they're not. The progress bar in Az has to be 100% or you won't be able to play/use all your files.
Also, what are you using to verify the MD5?
thanks for the reply. i'm not sure why but they're working perfectly now. maybe they weren't downloaded all the way before and now they are like you said. I'm not sure, but its working now. Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

Ah excellent! A foobar convert! :D
First make sure you have the latest foobar (.9.1). After that, go to the components page (http://www.foobar2000.org/components/index.html) and download the "CD Burning Support" component. Stick it in foobar's components directory and you're set! Then you just select your tracks, right click, go to "Convert", then "Write Audio CD". Note that you WILL need to have Nero installed to use foobar's burner.
Hope this helps! Sorry I didn't see your earlier post.

my xp firewall is down, but i'm leeching 7-16-05, however, i've seen other people leeching and seeding multiple shows.
but, when i look on bt community tracker, it's got my ip address on the list multiple times (i assume from me changing the priority of the '06 show) and it says that i'm sharing. so i guess i just want to be "connected."

When you're seeding, the program in the bottom will not show you as connected. Are you connecting to peers, though? Does it say something like Peers: (3) 45 or something? The number in the () is how many peers you're connected to. If you're connected to them, you're seeding.

What program(s) would I need my firewall Zone Alarm Pro to allow ports 6881-6889 through ?
A lot of places are now blocking the default ports for security reasons, so it's recommended to use something else. I use port 50505. So, put that in as your port in Az and then allow that and the java app in Zone Alarm. I've had trouble with Zone Alarm in the past though, dealing with torrents (reason I uninstalled it), but see if you can get it to work. Just run the NAT test in Az and see if it's OK.
just a quick question...does 2-3 torrents running at the same time cause the torrents to slow down individually in speed times?
also whats the difference between seeds and peers?
peers are the ones leaving thier file open to others for d.l. , right?
and seeds are the ones d.l. themselves?
Yes, the more you have open, the more it'll wreak havoc on your network. I try to download one or two at a time tops, but it really depends on your computer and internet speed.
And you've got seeds and peers backwards. Seeds are completed copies that people are distributed, while peers are literally your peers who are also downloading the files.
TOP!!!
I am using Azureus on my dad's computer and my smiley stays yellow all the time....
Anyway I can fix this?
Start at the firewall and go from there. Make sure the right ports are open.

Ah. Well, I don't use that program so I really can't help you. There has to be a place where it says the speed you are uploading. If you're uploading at all, you're seeding.

If your share ratio is 85% then you're definitely seeding. That means you've uploaded 85% of what you've downloaded (the total size of the show). Again, I don't use that program, so I can really help you with the "download" and "finish" area thing.

Sure is! On the tab with the torrent's name (hope you know what I'm talking about), go to "Files" then select the ones you don't want to download and right-click and go to "Set Priority" > "Do Not Download".
This comes in quite handy. :)
EDIT: To get to the torrent's tab, in "My Torrents" double-click the torrent file you want to work with.

Make sure in your program settings you've allowed it to download more than one at a time.
Or your green torrent may just be choking the others out.

Okay, I am a completely new user to this so I appologize ahead of time if I begin to annoy anyone. I've installed azureaus and am in the config wizard and in the NAT / server port options tab that comes up while setting up the wizzard. It says "Incoming TCP Listen Port: 43186". those numbers were there already, i didn't put them in. I click test and it says "Testing port 43186: NAT error" HUH?
I tested the ports 6881-6889 as well and it said the same thing. What should be in this field and what the heck does it mean?
Dr. Strangelove

I'd keep the 43186, but either way, you need to open those ports on your firewall. That's what the error is. See the first post in the thread for some help with that.

What file type are the songs? Most likely they are flac. You can use this if you just want to convert them: http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm
or to play and also convert them you can use this: http://www.foobar2000.org/
There is also a plugin for winamp if you use that.
If they are .shn you can use foobar (the link above) but you will need the shn plugin from the components page. There is also a plugin for winamp.

i've got bit torrent, however, i'm looking for a torrent that'll allow me to leech multiple concerts, rather than just one at a time. so i guess i'm looking for a multi-leech torrent supplier.
Hi Folks,
I have been having some "computer woahs" as of late. Anytime I have my Azureus open, my computer runs RIDICULOUSLY SLOW. I have never ever had this problem before, I thought maybe because it was I was downloading two shows at once, but as soon as I stopped downloaded I restarted Azureus and the computer. I turned it back on, at this point I was just uploading torrents, but still, everything was running slow.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help.

There are none that I know of. Sorry. You'd only really get this if someone packed multiple shows into one torrent and that usually doesn't happen because the size would be quite big.

Az can be quite the memory hog, especially if other things are running in the background. You could try this: http://www.utorrent.com/
It's supposed to be a lower profile torrent program that uses less memory. I've used it a bit and it's pretty simple. Maybe there's a memory leak in your version of Az, so wait until an updated release and give it a try again, I'd say.

I didn't see any 04 shows on Dreaming Tree, but it is the site for DMB torrents. If you post an ISO someone may help you. If you don't get any responses after a few days, PM me.
http://www.dreamingtree.org/index.php
You might also want to try bt.etree. They often have older shows on there.
http://bt.etree.org/?search=&cat=252
As for smart FTP, its a program for connecting directly to another computer and downloading (or uploading). You have to know the computers "address" be it IP eg 34.129.78 etc OR if they have a domain/dns service. You'll also need to have a user name and password. A lot of really generous people here on ants run these and you can check them out here (http://www.antsmarching.org/downloads/servers.php).
What's with the "file" you downloaded? What kind was it? Did it play?
Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Sorry it has been so long but I just wanted to say thanks for the help Doc.
First time trying to use bittorrent, i d/l "Utorrent" and i need to set up my firewall to use it. I d/l the instructions for my specific modem and it indicates i need to establish a "static IP"
I called up my ISP and they said for a static IP the charge is 59.99 for the first 3 months is anyone else charged to establish a static IP? I'll just do the b&p if that's the case or try another method.

I'm having trouble with portforwarding. I went on over to portforward.com and have been following the steps as instructed on this page - http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WCG200/Azureus.htm
Halfway down the page it asks me to enter the static IP I set up in previous steps. Is this just IP address I found after the "Run cmd" steps? Also, it is telling me to enter my IP into my browser's address bar. Every time I try to do that I just get the MSN search page saying that the address cannot be found. Any suggestions? Thanks!
EDIT: Also, my computer is a laptop that connects to the wireless network. I'm going to be downloading my shows onto this computer, but do I still need to go through the portforwarding process and such on the main computer that is hooked up to the modem/router?

I am new to bit torrent and this thread has been extremely helpful. Thank you! I do have one issue though. I'm using Azureus and I have two torrents downloaded.
- While seeding, one torrent hasn't uploaded anything. The seeds column lists 0(5) and Peers column is 0(0). My health is a blue face.
- The other torrent started seeding, health was green and was working fine. My share ratio began climbing higher, but then I had to close Azureus. When I started Azureus again the same torrent has no seeding activity and the health is blue. Its a recent show I would think lots of users would be wanting it. maybe not.
Questions:
- How can I improve my share ratio if nobody wants what what I've got? I'm trying to play by the rules.
- Could I be doing something that is preventing me from connecting to peers? My NAT indicator is green - reachability is OK.
- Do I have to restart seeding when I open Azureus?
Its frustrating because my share ratio is bad and I want to be able to continue downloading. Im confused. :confused Can anyone shed a little light on the situation? Thanks!

Thanks! You seem to be doing quite fine. You are not seeding the first torrent because there are no peers. In other words, there are no people trying to download it.
Improving your ratio on various sites can be tricky. It's great if you can jump on a torrent right when it hits and keep it open as many others are downloading it. Other than that, just try to leave them open as long as you can.
I think your setup is OK.
Normally you don't have to restart seeding upon reopening the program but just check and make sure the torrent is running and not stopped. Hit the "Play" looking button up top when the torrent is selected. If you can't, then it's running.

Cap your upload speed you mean? Just go into Options > Transfer and set the global max upload speed to whatever you want your cap set to.
Also, how does your ISP not allow seeding? It's just uploading data, and if your ratio is .5 then you have to have uploaded something.

a. You're downloading lossless (ie CD quality) audio files via bittorrent.
b. There are many FAQs all over this site and others about what to do with the files you get. You can either leave them as is and play them on your computer or convert/burn them to CD. One program that will convert (need a plugin for shn) is http://www.foobar2000.org/ . There are many others, though.

Gmoore-it can take a while to grab a whole show, I usually leave it going over night...if there are a lot of seeders and your download speed is 75kb/s+ it might only take a few hours, depending on size. Other times, seeders are on and off so it can stop and start...your software should estimate the time it will take for the whole thing at your current speed.
Be patient.

Disco Stu--you are sharing files peer to peer with torrent software. Someone creates and uploads a "torrent" to this site and posts a link that connects another person(s) to their computer and that person can copy the files onto their own computer. The more people sharing or seeding the same files the faster it transfers. With multiple seeders you might get bits and pieces from several different peers while at the same time, sharing what you have with others.
Once complete, leave your torrent open and you will see other connect to you and you then will become a seeder of the show. Your ratio is the amount downloaded from others vs. the amount you have uploaded to others. Everyone should try to keep their ratio over 1, meaning equal downloaded and uploaded amounts, this is the spirit of the whole thing, sharing the music. Your torrent software should track your per show ratio so you can see where you are.
After you get the files and what to do depends on what type of file they are and what you plan to do with them. If they are shn files and you want to rip them to a cd, convert them to wav. I use mkw audio compression tool to "decode" them to wav. here is a link to download this freeware
http://www.etree.org/mkw.html
If the files are FLAC I convert them with my winamp to burn (winamp also plays flac files w/out any conversion). Winamp is as well from their site.
Bottomline, this is what its all about. Grabing and sharing shows for free that DMB has allowed tapers to record and distribute. Never pay for one of these recordings, never sell anything. Do not distribute converted files, only the original sourse (shn or flac).
Hope this helps.

Here's a question...
How do you request a specific date to be tirrented? Is it even "correct" to request a torrent?
I only ask because I'm looking for the past 2 years at Mansfield to be torrented, (2004+2005)...yet I haven't seen them posted yet. I don't know if it's just that no one has them recorded, or if people haven't uploaded them yet for whatever reason, or if there just isn't any demand.
I mean, I don't wanna sound like I'm being a whiner and crying for someone to give me these shows, but I would like to let people know that there is a bit of a demand for them (at least one person ;) ).
So...what should I do? Post in the 2005 torrent forum and ask for the show? Or just be patient and see if it gets torrented naturally?

I'm currently using utorrent and when i start d/ling from one of those other sites everything is fine and when i start uploading or d/ling from ants tracker with Azureus the light just stays blue and says i'm firewalled. i did the nat test in Azureus and its says OK and i have checked the ports in utorrent and its OK! Carl,
If I am reading your post correctly, you can download shows but are not uploading anything to anyone else. So when you are done grabbing a show you are 100% done and your share ratio is 0.
Make sure to start with that there are others downloading the show too, if you are the only one grabbing it there would be no one else to share with. Find a show with as many seeders and leechers as possible, hop on, and you should begin down and upping data right away.
If this does now work I would reset my router to its base state in case something done to it is the problem, try different torrent software (I have tried three and found Utorrent the best for me), make sure there are no settings in your torrent program that are set to prevent you from uploading, like max upload rate being set to zero, stuff like that. Check your firewall is not the problem by turning it off for a few minutes, the windows firewall too...
Basically, I would start over with both my hardware and new software and try again. When I started, I messed with ports and stuff like that and it was totally unneccessary and a huge headache. On Utorrent and the others you can do a port check to make sure ports are open. Sometimes I have to restart my computer too if everything did not hook up right.
Good Luck.

is there any specific program that we need to convert these files?
Strangely Brown
01-15-2007, 06:22 PM
There is, shn and flac are the two compressed formats you'll have to deal with.
It depends on what type of files you download and what you plan on doing with them as to how to proceed. I convert SHN files to wav. with mkw audio compression tool (search on internet for download from etree) and listen to them on winamp. I burn with winamp too once they are wav. to cd. Winamp also outright plays flac files (no conversion neccessary), and converts them to wav when burning for a cd.
For anything Apple related or to load on an ipod, I have no idea. I own a boombox.

Did you follow the Torrent FAQ? When you re-download the torrent file and open it up with your torrent program, you have to point to the folder that the show lives on on your hard drive - that way it knows you've already downloaded it, and will begin seeding.

Can using a university's ethernet prevent me from port forwarding. I used to have no problem with bittorrent, but now I can't connect to anything and I'm thinking I'm screwed because I'm pretty sure I can't change my ports since I'm not in control of the router.
Any advice or am I utterly and completely screwed?
