Hello all. Since many of you are experiencing BitTorrent downloading for the first time with this tour, I'm going to try to put together a short guide with a few tips and maybe answer some common questions. (Maybe this could get stickied for a while until newer people get used to BT downloading? I've tried to help out in individual threads, but it would be easier if there was a specific, noticable post)

First, you will need a BitTorrent client, the program that will take the .torrent file you get from somewhere and use it to download your show. I personally use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net ) but there are many programs out there with similar features. I will, however, only be able to answer really specific questions regarding this program. So if you're just starting out, I'd recommend using Azureus so we're all on the same page. Plus, if you ask any questions, I'll probably be able to help you a lot more if you're using this program.

After you install the program, it should automatically detect some of your settings and pretty much set itself up. You will, however, need to do a few things outside of the program.

You need to know if you are behind a firewall. If you're using a router, chances are it has a built in firewall. You will need to open ports so the BT program can properly communicate with other users and the tracker it uses for your show. This is done by going into your router's configuration and setting Port Forwarding to ports 6881-6889 (these are the common bittorrent ports). The way to do this for some specific brands of routers can be found here: http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/btclientconfig.html Scroll down a bit and you can find some helpful info.

If you are behind a software firewall, such as ZoneAlarm for example, then you just need to add your bittorrent program to the "allowed" list or whatever it's called in your specific program.

Also, Windows XP users. XP has it's own, really bad, built in firewall. You need to turn this off. This can be done by going to Start Menu > Settings > Network Connections, then right-click on your connection > Properties > Advanced > then the Windows Firewall settings. Turn it off from there.

OK, we're just about ready to download some shows. First we need to make sure our bandwidth is set up properly in our BT program. You should find out what your upload and download capabilities are. You can usually do this by checking with your ISP. It's usually listed on their site somewhere. It'll be, for example something like 350 kb/s download, 35 kb/s upload. These numbers all depend on your ISP plan, but we'll use them in future examples. So, in the BT software, I usually keep my max download to unlimited because I rarely reach the max speed anyway. In Azureus, this is on the Tools > Options > Transfer area. Set kB/s max download speed to 0 (0 means unlimited). Now, the upload speed can really hit your performance hard, which many people don't realize. You do, of course, want this to be as high as possible so you are sharing with others, but at the same time, if this is too high, it can and will choke your total bandwidth (both up AND down) and you'll get some really horrible speeds. I usually set this number at about 10 Kb lower than my upstream bandwidth, which would be, in the example I gave above 25 kB/s.

That should be it! Look at the .torrent file you've downloaded and make sure it actually has the .torrent extension. Some 2005 Torrents (http://www.antsmarching.org/forum/showthread.php?t=134810) If it has none (it's just xxx and not xxx.torrent) you can just add the .torrent to the end and it will be fine. Double-click that file and it should load up your BT software. You'll notice what appears to be all the files from the show on your computer in a matter of a few seconds. These are not complete files. They simply act as a kind of place-holder for the files you will be downloading. You cannot play these files (or do anything else with them, really) until they are completely done downloading. You can, however, set specific files to different priority levels (or even prevent them from downloading all together) so they download first if you want. For example, say you want to read the .txt file for a show. On the My Torrents screen of Azureus, double-click the listed show and it'll bring you to a more detailed window with tabs. Click the Files tab and you can see all the files for your specific torrent. Find the txt file and right-click it and set the priority to High. It should download quickly. You can see it's done by looking at the % complete column. Then you can view the txt file as you would normally. Any file that is at 100% you can then play, convert, or do whatever you want with (just don't try to move it out of the directory).

The most important thing when dealing with torrents is seeding to others after your download is complete. This is the whole basis of the system. If everyone shut down their BT program as soon as their download was finished, the system would not work. You should try to keep your torrent seeding until your upload:download ratio is AT LEAST 1:1. That way you've given back as much as you've taken, and it helps everyone else get better speeds.

One final thing to keep in mind. If you jump on a torrent right after it was posted and there are very few seeds, you will get slow speeds. There's nothing you can do. It's just supply and demand. If there's only one seed, and 25 leechers, you can only download so fast. The best thing to do is be patient. Your speed will go up as more people finish the download and start seeding.

I hope this helps a little bit. I've tried to be as helpful in specific threads as I could be, but I figure it's just easier to find some answers in one place, and it also makes it easier for me and others to help less experienced people out.

Please try to post all torrent related questions here, not in a link to the show or whatever, so everyone else can see your question too, and maybe it'll help them as well.

I'm having problems with being connectable and I'm dumb ;)

Problem #1. I'm unsure if I'm using a router :eek

When I went to the portforward link from DT I started the process assuming that what I think of as the cable modem was my router. But there is no maker listed on the 'box w/ the blinking lights' and the only serial number does not match any of the routers that portforward lists. Is a cable modem the same thing as a router? If yes, I guess I could contact my DSL provider and ask them what type of router I'm using.

I got the 6.1.05 show dl'd and converted, but I think it would be better for myself and others if I could get myself connected.

Thanks Dr. :thumbsup

NOw I'm really embarassed, but at least I started my pervious post by admitting I'm dumb. However, I'm getting smarter. I don't have a router, the box w/ the blinking lights is just the cable modem :o as I suspected.

Also, note what I said above about choking your connection. Make sure your upload is set at least about 10 kb/s less than your connection to the internet is capable of handling. A safe number to just experiment with if you're on a broadband connection is 25 kb/s.

I'm connectable!!!!

excuse my joy :lol but I am sooo happy I got that problem solved.

The problem was norton antivirus. I uninstalled that and downloaded a new security suite from my provider, disabled the XP firewall (thanks to Dr Strangleove :) ), and adjusted the settings on bit tornado per the instructions on portforward. :monkey

I want to get my ratio up. I hate the frowning emoticon ;)

Congrats! Getting rid of Norton was probably a good thing anyway. It's done horribly compared to other programs when tested against them. Pretty much last, actually.

Glad you're all situated. Have fun downloading!

Quck question, what is the difference between a seeder and leech? I always though they were the same thing....

A seeder has the whole show downloaded and is only uploading to other people. A "leech" (there are other friendlier terms too, I just use that one) is someone who is downloading. You do upload pieces you have completed as you download, but you're not a seed untill 100% done.

New problems to an old hat...
I've been d/l'ing shows forever on bt.etree using Mainline3.4.2..
I thought I'd try getting a show from Dreamingtree.com but I had some problems doing my first d/l from them and thought I'd install Azureus as reccommended by that site...but it still didn't work. I gave up and went back to bt.etree to d/l Crumbo's 6/2/05 pull and NOW I'm getting the same problem I was getting at Dreamingtree.com.

Here's the issue... I click on the torrent and save it to my computer (like I've done a hundred times before) but now it just beeps and everything dissappears... no d/l status box or anything. It does write a file name on my computer but there's nothing else. When I try it again it says the file already exisits and asks if I want to replace it but it's just the text info...not the show torrent. Why am I not connecting or getting the option to connect?

ANY advice will help.

Not sure where you are lost exactly but register at the torrent sites like... http://bt.etree.org or www.dreamingtree.com (http://www.dreamingtree.com)
then find a show you want and click on the download link. I don't use your specific program but I can try and help you with the basics.

You can e-mail me at markbramble@comcast.net or PM me if you are still having issues.

Good luck

Sorry, just got in from the show tonight, so I'm exhausted, but I'll attempt to help real quick. Is the torrent saving with the ".torrent" extension? It seems sometimes it doesn't. Just add the .torrent if it's not there.

I'm not sure what else it could be. I'll think more when I'm not ready to pass out.

try a right click save as instead of clicking the link.

what might be happening is the one of the BT programs recognizes the file now and tries to start downloading instead of saving the file to your pc like you are used to.

Not really sure I understand your question. You download a torrent file from a site like dreamingtree, double-click it, and it should start up your BT program and begin to download the show. Your download info for the show will be listed in the program after you run the torrent file.

Hmm, not sure Jess. I've tried pretty much every program and kept going back to Azureus becuase I've gotten consistantly better speeds with it. You may just have to experiment with your settings a bit. Make sure you're not choking your bandwidth by having a really high max upload speed. That tends to be something I notice happens a lot to people. Kick it down about 10K and see if you get some better speeds.

Plus a lot depends on when you jump on a .torrent. Speeds can fluctuate a bunch, but I'm sure you know that. Like the 6/5 Naylor source for me was a bit slow compaired to others. I probably only averaged 50 kb/s on it and I notice the average swarm speed in Azureus shows it's pretty slow for everyone, too (around 40kb/s average speed).

So anyway, maybe try tweaking a bit and see what happens. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

shnf is a folder, not a file. There is no such extension.

You need to let the show download. Once done, the shnf folder will have your completed shn files. Note, you will see these files in the folder as soon as you start downloading. These are NOT completed files. Wait for the show to be finished 100% before you try to convert. If you got the foobar special installer, it has the shn plugin already there, so you can use foobar to convert the shn's.

I'd love it if someone could shed some light on this problem I've been having with Bit Torrent. I am using Bit Tornado, have a router, and configured it according to portforward.com for my specific router model. The torrent starts ok, but part way through, stops the download and severs my connection completely (internet, e-mail, everything) until I reboot. I've tried Azureus and had the same problem. I've tried going around my router (directly from cable to modem to computer), and still have the problem. I have no other firewalls installed.

Any ideas? I'm stumped.

I began to dl 6/12/05 from Dreamingtree. It was 4.2 % of the way finished when I blew a fuse and my computer went off. Whn I powered back up and tried to open the torrent file to continue to dl, it says I can't leech from more than one location. As far as I know, I am not trying to leech form more than one location. I need help.

I think that's a dreamingtree security type thing. I'm pretty sure you just need to wait a few minutes and restart it.

I've tried waiting with no luck. I even tried to dl a different show and it let me. I even deleted all of the files and the torrent file for 6-12. I then re dl'd the torrent file and it gave me the same message "can't leech from more than one location."

How long did you wait? Also, make sure your torrent program isn't somehow automatically restarting when you reboot.

Hmm...I'd shut your program down, CTR+ALT+DEL to make sure it's really off, then reboot again and try.

sounds like your ip might have gotten reset and/or it still shows you leeching on the torrent. just wait a little while.

Well, the files will either be FLAC or shn, so really there's no need for conversion unless you're burning the files. If they're FLAC, there's no real reason to convert to shn, as FLAC is considered better for several reasons (although they're both lossless).

You can play both types of files and convert with http://www.foobar2000.org/

I'm back again - I'm having the same problem. It's driving me crazy. I'm using Azureus, I've got my d/l capped at 70kb and my u/l capped at 20kb. I've tried changing the port I'm using. I've tried limiting how many seeds and leechers I'm connecting to. Yet, everytime, it downloads for a little while, then it hits a brick wall, stops downloading, and cuts my connection completely (bit torrent, internet, e-mail, everything). I'm baffled - anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Well, as long as your connection seems stable (like when surfing the net or whatever), those are good numbers. You could probably even put download on unlimited and be ok.

Again, those are nice speeds, so you may not see much of an improvement.

Not really sure what's causing this then. Are you downloading several torrents at once? That can really tax your connection. Also, could it be your ISP? Mine is famous for occasionally dropping my connection for a minute or two every now and then. It really gets on my nerves. You don't really notice it while surfing, but when downloading it's obvious.

Make sure the show is done downloading, first of all. As soon as you start the torrent, the files will appear on your computer but will not be done downloading (you cannot download 1 gig in 2 seconds ;)).

Then you can use a program like http://www.foobar2000.org/ to play the files or get a plugin for winamp or use something else.

I'm trying to download the 6-1-05 show with Azureus, and nothing is really happening for me. A red face in the corner says im not connected to any peers, but it says 0 (27) seeds. Am I doing something wrong?

Dr. Strangelove
06-16-2005, 10:59 PM
Peers are other people downloading the show, as you are, so if you're the only one, then there won't be others listed. Seeds are supplying the show to you, and are what matter most. 0 (27) means it's seeing 27 seeds, but you aren't connected to any yet. It can take a little while to connect, so give it a few minutes.

If you don't download anything after a little while, check your firewall.

you may or may not want to switch BT programs but i use azureus and it has a plugin called "autospeed" that pings a dns server and automatically adjusts your max up/down speeds for you to maximize both ups and downs.

What happens if you shut down Azureus in the middle of downloading a show? Do you have to start over again from the beginning, or can you pick up where you left off at another time?

Just wondering, b/c I'm downloading a D&T show today, and I'm going away for the weekend, and I don't think it will be finished by the time I have to leave, and I don't really want to leave my PC running all weekend unattended (sorry for the run-on sentence...)

it'll be fine, as long as there are still seeds there when you get back. when you launch azureus again it will check to see what pieces you have downloaded and start from there.

it works the same way as say you are done downloading a show and you have it on your computer and you are surfing around on dreamingtree. if you see that a show that you have on your computer is low on seeds or doesn't have any seeds but has some leechers (people downloading it) then those leechers won't ever get the show unless a seed jumps back on. if you still have the show on your harddrive and haven't changed anything about it then you can download that torrent again and when it asks where to save the show point it to the same folder that the show you already have is is. azureus will go all the way through checking your show and then you can seed it so the other people can get the show as well.

i hope that makes sense.

the short answer to your question is yes you will be fine.

Yeah, any BT program will eat up the RAM. You could fiddle with it's priority in XP to try to cut down the use of RAM. Open task manager to do this and see if it works.

It lowers the resources (RAM and such) that the program uses. You may see a hit in the program's performance, though. It's worth trying, I guess. You can always just change it back. I generally don't play with it much, myself. If I'm going to be doing something that takes a lot of power (like gaming or something), I usually just turn off Az. then turn it back on when I'm done.

Blue face either means:

-when seeding, it means that you're not yet connected to any peer

-when downloading, it means that you are connected to some peers but the tracker is down

You can either get a plugin for your current player (if it's winamp or something), or you can download the Special foobar2000 installation and use it: http://www.foobar2000.org/

Just google for your player + shn or flac plugin (whichever format your files are).

Alright guys,

Here's a question. I have the autospeed plugin on my Azureus and it does a good job of regulating speeds (what it's supposed to do) but it 1) always tops my download out at about 176 kb/s -- when i'm pretty sure i can handle more, because i've had it up around 300 before, and b) tops my upload out at 40 kb/s. it's never been higher than 40.

thing is, i'm only seeding right now, i've always got a couple seeds going, and rarely download (i use ftp) but it still tops out at 40 kb/s upload even when i'm not downloading anything. how do i find out what my max upload could be...how much up-bandwidth my connection can handle? i'm sick of doing three shows and like 12/s.

any ideas?

There are a bunch of online bandwidth testers. Do a google for "bandwidth test" or something like that. I say this because some of them seem way off, so it's best to use a few of them so you get a good idea. I don't have any bookmarked, or I'd post a link.

Okay so I've been using BitTorrent and my status has always been yellow - I've gotten the shows it just takes a day or so since I upload very little (usually like 50mb per show). Since I AM capable of better speeds and I know its not working properly I want to figure out the problem. I'm pretty sure its my router because my only other firewall (norton) doesn't affect the status when I turn it completely off. I've searched around my router settings and can't find anything for port forwarding. It's a D-Link 524 so if anyone can help me fix the problem it would be a big help since I would like to be a better help uploading shows to others!

You can still download if you're getting a NAT error, just much more slowly, so this may have always been that way. A red face means you're not connected to any peers. Check the tracker's page and make sure there are still people on your particular torrent.

The NAT error is most likely from a firewall, so try to open the correct ports and you should be OK.

First of all, thank you, Dr. Strangelove. Up until this time I have been intimidated by the whole Bit Torrent thing. Well, that was until I read your Faq. I pretty much followed what you said, and atleast have the program up in running. Once again, thank you.

I do have a couple of questions though. Keep in mind that I am a complete newbie here.

1. I tried downloading a show, and was getting a really slow speed (around 25-30). So, I bailed on the download. My question is, does this go against Bit Torrent ethics? I'm thankful for the opportunity to download shows, so the last thing I want to do is shaft someone. I know that once a show is downloaded, you should leave the program open so that others can get the show. Does this still apply if you are in the process of downloading, as well?

2. Am I correct in assuming that you're speed depends on the time of day? For example, is it better to download a show at 5:00 pm, as opposed to 2:00 am?

Thank you for the faq and thank you for your assistance. It is appreciated.

1. Nah, I wouldn't say it's frowned upon. So you decided you don't want the show. No big deal. Don't worry about it. You know enough to keep your program running for a while after the download is done. That's what really matters.

2. Time of day doesn't matter. The number of seeds/peers matters. The more seeds, the faster it will go. You can see those numbers listed on the site and in your bittorrent program.

Ah, wait. Is it asking for your "local IP" or does it just say IP?

You can find your real IP here: http://www.webyield.net/domainquery.html , but it may want your local IP.

Local IP's vary. They're usually this: 192.168.1.X, where X equals what computer it is on your home network.

I'm not so experiences with this but when I was converting the 6-18-05 show from shn to wav after going through all the torrent stuff, the last 6 or 7 songs on the mkwACT were said to have failed to be decompressed. Does this mean I have to go through the torrent download again?

Dr. Strangelove
06-26-2005, 06:03 PM
Are you sure the show was 100% complete?

All you have to do is start the torrent again and point it to the folder where your shn's are. It will continue downloading. If the files are still giving you errors, just delete those files only and the program will just re-download them. You won't have to download the files that are OK.

Start the torrent again and point it to the folder where the rest of the files are. If the folder is still in the same place as where it downloaded, you don't even need to point. It'll just start downloading those files automatically.

If you deleted the torrent file just re-download it.

I think your harddrive may be full. That's probably why you couldn't convert the other files to .wav.

Ok, this is starting to grate on my nerves a little. Truthfully, it has been quite some time since I have felt like this much of an idiot. Here are my concerns.

As stated before, I have read up quite a bit on the rules and faq's of Bit Torrent. So, the last thing I want to do is get banned or blacklisted. When downloading I'm getting some pretty decent speeds (350-420kbs). I have downloaded two shows thus far without a hitch. The problem occurs once the file drops down into the seeding window. The uploads stall to between 1-10kbs. And I keep getting that yellow frown face, which teels me that my ratio sucks and people are unable to connect to me. The reason why this is so irritating is that both times after downloading a show, I have left Azureus open all night long, only to come back and find out that I haven't done squat for my ratio.

After reading through the faq, I went back on and did a port test for 6881, and I keep getting NAT error. So, I proceeded to Uninstall Zone alarm, Uninstall Azureus, and then re-install Azureus. Ran a test and WHAM! Same frigging problem. Which brings me to portforwarding. Here are my questions.

1. We have three computers in the home on broadband. I am running my computer on an OvisLink Air Live Wireless USB Adaptor. Could this be a factor in contributing to my NAT error issue? I went into it's settings and found nothing about portforwarding, so I am completely baffled. Also, when I went to the portforwarding website, did not find my Ovis Link model on there. So, this leads me to believe one or two things. Either it is not a wireless adaptor issue, or they don't cover my model, which means I'm screwed.

2. Also, when I click on options in Azurus, it has 6881 as the incoming port. Under this it says "bind to local IP address." That part is blank. Is it simply a matter off just plugging my IP address in the space, click save, and then the issue will be resolved? I mean, I really don't know what else to do. After literally spending hours reading about this stuff and getting nowhere, I'm at my wits end with it.

I am thankful and appreciative for any insight you could provide me with, Dr Strangelove.

Here is my ratio: 0.167 upload: 302,52MG download: 1.78GB

This is certainly a far cry from the 1:1 ratio that you mention in your faq.

Dr. Strangelove
06-26-2005, 10:03 PM
It's just odd that you're getting those great d/l speeds and bad upload speeds. Are there any peers on that particular torrent? Or a really low number of them? If there are 15 seeds and only one peer, then all 15 seeds are sending bits to the 1 peer, so your speed will be pretty low.

If that's not the case then I'm really not sure. You're getting the NAT error so...

Also check your wireless's website. They very well could have some helpful info about this. There most likely is a firewall built in, since it's a router.

Assuming you don't have a firewall, though, before you go nuts looking through everything on their site, plug in your local IP where it asks for it and see what happens. Again, since you're on a network, that number will most likely be 192.168.0.X where X is the number your computer is on the network. If you don't know that just plug in 0 and try, then 1,2 and 3. If none of those work, see if you can get your real IP (from that site I linked or google for an IP finder) and try that.

Then I'd say plow through the manufacturer's site.

Sorry, I wish I could be more helpful. I know it can get frustrating, trust me. ;)

If something is wrong with a file or two, you can just start the torrent up again and it should re-download anything that's missing.

Go to Tools and do the NAT test. Chances are you're behind a firewall. See if the first post in the thread is any help if that's the case.

Hmm...it's in the Special installer. At least it was. Check in your foobar2000/components folder for foo_shn.dll. If that's there it should play them and I have no clue why it won't. OK, someone else may have been having this problem. It seems that they may not be including the shn plugin in the special installer anymore. Download the foo_shn.zip from here ( http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uybc/#foo_shn ), unzip it, and put it in your foobar2000/components folder. Make sure you restart foobar afterwards.

That should work. If it doesn't, then your files may not be completed yet.

Greetings all,

I'm terribly sorry to be a redundant, slow learning fool -- but I am. Here's the deal...

I'm new to this bit torrent thing and it is, for some reason, like learning a new language. I used to DL shows from antsmarching.org when the ants downloader was available. Since it is no longer, I'm eager to learn this bit torrent deal so I can keep up with attaining copies of the shows I've attended.

When I used the ants downloader, I clicked on the source for the show I wanted, selected to DL the show, saved it to my comp, then decompressed them using the MKW tool. Can it be that it was oh so simple then?

After reading this entire thread and seeing others with many problems, I too am stuck in the process, and thus my quest to dominate -- okay, at least utilize -- the bit torrent technology has stalled.

I have Azureus and have downloaded a show. I am 99% certain that the show has fully downloaded (on the Files tab, all %'s are at 100% and all bars are blue). The problem now is that I don't know what to do with the files -- I can't listen to them from the computer and I can't convert them to .wav so as to burn them to disc (my primary end, here). When I click a file, I get a Windows prompt that reads,

"Windows cannot open this file:

File: <file name.shn>

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it..."

I thought I might be able to simply drag the files into mkw a la the good ol' ants DLer days, but for whatever reason the MKW tool won't open at all on my computer (I double click it, the cursor hourglasses for about 3-5 seconds, then returns to an arrow and nothing happens...however, I think it may be running in the background because when I cntrl + alt + delete and choose processes, it is listed a number of times...what gives?).

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop the madness? Usually I catch on to these things after sometime playing with them, but this curveball appears to be one I cannot hit. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize again for posting what seems to be a problem that others have experienced.

Heya. It seems like you're having some type of problem with MKW, not the actual downloading of the shows. If everything is at 100% and the bars are full, the files are most certainly finished. Have you tried running the .md5 file first to verify your .shns? Try doing that (well, restart your computer first to make sure MKW didn't error out on you and is still in the background like you said). If that works, then we know the files are fine. I'd say try to convert them as normal one more time (just like you said...you're doing everything right). If that doesn't work, there are some other tools that will convert for you. Try foobar2000 http://www.foobar2000.org/ along with this plugin: http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uybc/#foo_shn (unzip it and put it in the foobar2000/components folder).

See what happens and best of luck. ;)

I backread a page or so but didn't find any Q/As coinciding with my problem. I have downloaded a few shows using torrent but I don't know how to get them to play. I want to find a way to get them on iTunes. They are .flac and .mk4w, I believe. I click them but they it can't identify what type of file they are. Then I try to open with iTunes, but it brings iTunes up but nothing happens. I figured maybe i need to have some kind of a converter, but i have never been able to figure out the mkw audio compresser thing I have, and I'm not even sure it's the right tool for torrents. I've had these files for weeks now and just can't figure out what I'm doing. Any help is deeply appreciated.

I don't use iTunes, but I know you can pretty much convert to anything with foobar. Even if you cannot go to AAC, you can at least get to a format iTunes will recognize.

i've dl azureus but can't get it to open so i can use it. what gives? also whenever i do get it to work, do the files work like shn( useing mkw or flak) or is it like a server? You need the latest Java installed. This may be why you cannot get Azureus to work. You can download it from the Azureus site under the "What You Need" section.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

As for your second question, I'm a bit confused. It downloads the shns or flacs automatically by using the torrent file. When completed, the files will all be on your harddrive for converstion, etc.

And sometimes, depending on the firewall, adding the program to the exceptions list doesn't work. Why? I have no idea. You should be able to also open ports manually in the program, so see if you can find that.

Im having problems with Bittornado. Up until about a week ago it usually took less than 15 seconds for the light to turn green. But since then it has been stuck on yellow. The download speed has remained the same but the upload is extremely slow. I did some research and found some information about DSO exploit. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and found the registry but when I went to correct the problem Spybot froze and I had to go tp windows task manager to close it.

After it was closed I updated Spybot to 1.4 and tried again but this time found nothing about DSO exploit. So I opened up the BT that I was recently downloading and am still stuck on a yellow light although my upload speed is running at about 50 kb/s which is better but not the best I have had.

Any suggestions as to how I could get the green light back on. I was finally getting a good ratio but it is slowly disappearing.

Thanks for the help.

cal step20 , You will need to decompress them in order for them to work. they are in a shn format. you can use mkw compression tool. if you got to the first post of this thread you'll find the link under programs needed. It is a drag and drop type of program. After installing it, it will ask you for a folder to send the decompressed files. I usually just put them in "my music". If you create a file for each disk, it is much easier to manage. it is a simple program and one I never had problems with. Plus its free.

My question is about giving back.

I am using Azureus. I am wondering if I want to use the Publishing option to help seed shows.
I only ask because I clicked this option a few days ago and haven't really seen my share ratio go up.

As I download shows, I have the yellow circle. This stays yellow when I am finished, but when I clicked on publish it turned blue and the upload speed went to zero.

Should I just leave the shows alone when I am finished downloading?? Or do I want to go to the publish option. I want to make sure that I am doing my part.

thanks-

I'm trying to get past my Netgear firewall. On the configuration page I list Service Name, which i think is UDP but I'm not sure, The next is the start & end port which I know to be 6881 & 6889. But the last area you need to fill in is Server Ip Address.

Any help on what that should be? I thought it was the IP address that our router gets from the ISP but that REALLY messed up the wireless network and I lost the wirless network & internet srvc all together.

THanks for the help.

Then you can view the txt file as you would normally. Any file that is at 100% you can then play, convert, or do whatever you want with (just don't try to move it out of the directory).

Dr. Strangelove,

Thanks much for your last reply. I now have foobar2000 v0.8.3 (which came with the _shn. plug in, by the way...?), and seem to have made some progress in that when I click on the file in azureus, it plays in foobar. So I can HEAR the music, which is good. What would be better is if I could put them onto CD!

I now need help with the conversion. How do I get them from azureus .shn's to .wav files that I can burn to CD? I understand that with the MKW tool you can drag and drop the files...so how is it done with foobar?

Thanks again,

I have downloaded the alpine shows and got them converted just fine. I converted the files from FLAC to wav. using Foobar2000. For converting shn to wav I beleive they recommend using winamp, shnamp 2, a long with mkw audio compressor which all of them can be downloaded from etree. I have not figured out how to do all that just yet.
TAO = track at once, how a cd you buy from a store would sound with a 2 second pause between tracks. For live shows (especially to trade and b+p for others) you want it DAO = disc at once is where it is continous play without the gaps between the tracks. I hope this helped you a bit, sorry that I couldn't be of more assistance to you.

I seem to be having the same problem with Azureus. I'll 200/k download speed while downloading for a couple minutes, then down to 0/k. I toned down my down/up and it doesnt seem to work. Port 6881 seems fine when I test, any other suggestions??

Ok, I searched "NAT error" and people were having this problem because of Firewalls and routers. Well, I disabled my Windows Firewall, and completely uninstalled Norton, but it still says this. I am connected to a router, but i don't know what to do. Also, I have Azureus, and my average DL rate is about 10kb/s. :BANG I hate having it so slow. This is a brand new computer with a Highspeed DSL connection :BANG it shouldn't be this slow. It takes me about 1 and a half days to download a show.

Any help?

Also, is taking Norton Antivirus off your computer safe? Which firewall, or INternet Security protection do you recommend? I took Norton off last night. And the internet speed was unbelievable! but, I had to re-install it today, according to my mom, and she said that I could get worms and viruses if Norton isn't on....I know all that, but is my computer really safe w/out Norton? Thanks

Altima22
09-02-2005, 03:27 PM
You really should have Anti-Virus Software and a Firewall running at all times to avoid the most problems. Without any installed, you are just asking for trouble. Norton is fine and won't affect your internet speed (although it can slow down your computer if its old because Norton likes to use a lot of resources).

As to the yellow light, it is caused by your router. Check the tutorial posted and look under the "Port Forwarding" section. You will need to open up ports and set the same ones for your bittorrent program to use. With that done and your firewall configured correctly, you should have no problem getting it to work right. Unless you are on a university network like me. I'm doomed now :( As I was just increasing my ratio @ 25 kb/s upload at dt.org. I was hoping to get here and use the speed to spread the dmb love, but unfortunately too many people have tried to do that sort of thing illegally and they have cracked down.

It is gonna take me days to download one show from now on, unless i can figure this thing out! It shouldn't be complicated, but there is no way to open up a port on Windows 98!?!?!

Altima22
09-03-2005, 10:28 PM
The port forwarding section is on the router itself, not on the actual computer. If you connect to the router by 192.168.0.1 (or similar, I'm not sure what it is for the linksys exactly) and then you should be able to do it from there. So if you have access to the router from your computer you can do it there and everything should work fine.

Oh great Dr. Strangelove,

I am about to go insane. I have done everything that I thought I have needed to do in order to download shows, but there is still something wrong, I think. What I have done so far is:
--I have Azureus
--I have bittorrent
--I have made all of the bit torrent ports from 6881-6889 and the other firewall stuff
--I am registered under dreamingtree.org and bt.etree.org
--and I checked my network connections and it says that my speed is 100.0 Mbps, which, I think, is my speed for downloading and seeding shows

But after all of this, when I click on a show (and I have clicked on a few, so it's not just one particular show that isn't working) I get nothing that shows anything is happening. On my bittorrent manager, it just says: "0.0% done, ? remaining", and that my upload rate is "0 KB/s".

Usually for these kinds of things, I just try to figure out everything out on my own, but I feel like I have done everything and I'm still not getting anything. What is it that I am still doing wrong?

I just moved to a dorm at Wisconsin-La Crosse.... Ever since, my torrents have been running at speeds of 1 or 2 kb/s.... Its a really fast connection so I dont understand these speeds. Anyone have a clue whats wrong?

ports. hm....i don't suppose that you are using a router. you need to find the open ports in your campus network and point your cilent to those.

if you're a newbie, don't bother with azureus. it doesn't offer that many advantages unless you really know what you're doing.

go download ABC Client. (Yet Another Bittorrent Client.)
