...that I came up with today at work. I've got an urge to record, you can say it's left over Alpine adrenaline. I might still change some songs around, and/or knock out some from this set. My set's usually change around because if I keep fucking up a part on one song for example, I get pissed for 1min and then pick another song to fill that slot. I must say this set is the nasty as is...:cool I mean ya never know, I might get some Machead chants from the fake people in my living room. :rolleyes

I ended up going to see Pirate's late last night.
As usual, like most nights there isn't anything to do, then I decide to record that night and something comes up...and I really felt like tokin. :shrug
If the house is quiet tonight I will, but I use Audacity and a fairly cheap microphone so I need there to be minimal noise when I play.

Why is it that people always put random songs when they make setlists...You almosthave more unreleased songs there than released songs! I can't belive it's because they are better...Perhaps consider your average audience might not know 9 of the songs you have on there?

Your crazy man.
I'm recording for my own enjoyment. I already made a sarcastic comment about getting Machead chants from the FAKE people in my living room. If I was playing in front of people this would not be the setlist.

Definitely...I have to. I know a few people at work that think it's retarded to record yourself. This one guy says, "...am I supposed to listen to myself? Unless it get's me somewhere in the music industry there's no point."
I couldn't disagree more. I know that once you have recorded for a couple months it can get boring, but that goes for guitar too. You always get the urge to pick up your guitar at some point. I'm not recording to try to get signed...more for fun. I love making setlists, and now I can play them, rather then just making compilation CD's that never got fully listened to ever anyway. I still sit here and can't believe some songs that I can play. I've made some great progress. :thumbsup

cool idea to record - people are ignorant. i'm a musician myself. its ALWAYS good to record yourself in whatever you are doing you might find a little riff in your practice that you stumbled upon and it turn out to be a song (from what I've heard Grey Blue Eyes was created that way). anyways...i just wanted to comment that there are some weird ass key changes lol. what kind of guitar do you have and what do you record with?

Alright, here it is: www.BenPezzner.com/piano/DMBPianoMedley.mp3
It's the whole set recorded in one 30 minute take. I used the looping pedal for the beginning of Stone and the end of Seek Up (I added that to the end, after Halloween). Some of these I've never played before (like The Stone and Get In Line, for example) and they are badly mauled, but there are some keepers that I'll probably make into separate recordings at some point.
Enjoy!

Thanks smartass. Obviously playing in front of a crowd is the way to go, but either the person doesn't want to and 2. recording is good to do anyways. It lets you hear what sounds tight and what you may need to reform before you perform in front of a crowd.

No, recording is not a good way to better how you perform. The main reason for this is that it diminishes your confidence, for two reasons. Firstly, you hear things in the recording that normal people wouldn't pick up, and this makes you automatically assume it's poor. Secondly, many people don't like hearing their own voice. A confidence issue, this one. Much better to perform to somebody else because they can give a balanced opinion. If you are at all musically minded, chances are you can sing anyway. That's what I found anyway. The best way to build up to a performance in front of a crowd is not by recording. It's through practice. Recording distracts you from practice. You practice playing to one person, then two, then three, and eventually you can work it up to an audience.

Well, if he ups it like I was suggesting earlier, he will be able to get an opinion from people on these boards. And the people that travel into the musicians discussions forums are "musically minded" and can help him out. I don't understand how recording distracts you from practicing, let me introduce you to this thing called the transitive property.
To practice, you have to play your instrument.
You have to play your instrument to record
Therefore, practicing is also recording.

That's not logically sound. You can't say P->Q, R->Q, therefore P=R
Logical arguments aside, however, I stopped keeping track of how many recordings I've made over the past few years... probably more than 100 at this point. When I make recordings, it is for one of two reasons. I either have a new idea in my head that I want to record for posterity, or I've practiced something enough that it is time to record it and let others critique/enjoy it. I don't think you can compare recording with yourself to playing in front of others - they are two separate activities that add to the enrichment of a musician. Whether one activity adds more than the other depends on the individual.

No, recording is not a good way to better how you perform.
Swimmers videotape themselves to watch their stroke and improve on it. Magicians videotape themselves to double check their angles. Without recording themselves, it doesn't matter how many thousands of laps a swimmer does, or how many shows in front of people a magician puts on... if the swimmer is doing the stroke wrong then he'll never realize his potential, and if the magician is revealing what's in his hand each time he performs the trick because he never recorded himself, then he will quickly find that his audiences will diminish.
It's the same exact thing with musicians - there are things that you just don't hear while you are singing/playing that you can hear in a recording. How would it be detrimental to one's performance if he is able to go back and make something better based on what he heard in a recording of himself? Like the swimmer and the magician, it doesn't matter how many people you play in front of... if you suck, you suck. Practicing by yourself and listening to how you sound is infinitely better than just performing.

Because playing your instrument isn't equal to recording. One requires the other.

I just don't agree with that. Swimming requires little or no confidence. Magicians, a little. But singing - that's a different thing. Most people are petrified of it if they have never done it before. Therefore watching yourself doing it if you have never had people tell you that you are good is not a great experience. I have had people tell me I'm good, but still, I don't like my voice and can't help cringing sometimes when I listen to it...and people ask what's wrong about it. I don't think you can compare singing to swimming at all, it's a different thing.

Good point. Swimmes and magicians use taping to view their technique. If you're trying to play a fast run and it never looks/sounds right or you just can't get it, perhaps videotaping yourself (hands, specifically) may help you to see what you're doing wrong. Just like it helps to watch a video (or live person) of someone doing it right.
There's more to live performance than just technique.
Also, you are, technically, practicing when you're recording. The difference is that the focus may be more on the finished product (recording) than on improving skills and technique. You'd probably be less likely to stop and replay tough passages, try alternate fingerings or vocals, etc. There's usually more freedom in a practice session to do... whatever :)

every sport requires confidence. a lack of confidence results in a poor performance. if you know you've been sucking in practice and you have a meet vs some of the best swimmers in your area you have to have confidence in yourself that you can go out there and do your best and not let the past have a hold on you

You are wrong about nearly everything you have said in this thread.
1. You criticized a guy for playing songs that fake people wouldn't know.:ugh
2. If someone wants to record a setlist comprised entirely of DMB, shut the fuck up and let them. And I think cover bands are a joke.
3. Recording yourself playing through said setlist is a great way to see where you stand as far as your potential live performance goes.
4. Every athlete/performer has to have confidence in him/herself, even swimmers.
5. Hearing yourself sing/play via a recording is a great way to correct faults you may not otherwise hear while practicing.

If possible, you should wait, I want to hear it first and then we can make up a (mini) set out of all the songs together. We can establish what counts I/YOU want for certain songs. It'd be really cool to have a CD of both of us. I will definitely have to meet up with you at Alpine next year....or Midwest Bank 9/15. Hopefully that's possible.

I was listening to your Dreaming Tree w/the cello....I like that even more to be honest. Could I put like an asteric next to songs I would rather have a cello? If not, it's all good. Light bulb went off today at work.....
Ben, when your back in San Diego after You Never Know, you should do Halloween > The Stone...just like on BTCS.
I love how the end of Halloween (violin) goes right into The Stone. I would love to throw that file into audacity and add my guitar to it. That would be gravy. A cello would sound just as good, if not better.

The end of Halloween into the Stone uses both violin and cello.
Sounds great.
And he's doing "Never Knew" not YNK. A Tony Dowe original. :)
I may rerecord Never Knew, as I'm not happy with the recording (vocals).

Ah...my bad. (on Never Knew)
Back to Halloween though, if he's got a violin too then by all means play them both. I know Ben can pull it off, no doubt.

HA! I figured I'll never measure up to the awesomeness that is Jay Wood :rolleyes so I put that on there. :lol
Let me know if you decided to redo Never Knew so that I don't record to the old version of it.

I do have a violin too, but I'm not that good at it yet. I can pretty much play most of those notes on the cello though.
As for your suggestion, I'm actually in the middle of recording all of BTCS on the cello. So far I just have the heartbeat intro but I'm hoping to finish it by the end of the summer.

There is a piano recording of #41 floating around out there that has gained legendary status here on ants. Whenever I make a post with one of my covers, someone almost always asks for the Jay Wood 41. In my opinion, it's pretty good, but nothing special. I think the reason it's so popular was because it was recorded on a real piano with real recording equipment and consequently has a beautiful sound to it.
And no, I don't have it on my computer so I can't send it to you. If you want more DMB piano covers, you can go here though: www.benpezzner.com/piano
Hope that helped!

There are numerous threads in DMBc with a whole bunch of YSI's. If not, you can always ask in the take/leave audio thread and get it within the next five minutes.

Please do my man. I'll make a couple requests, I could even loop my guitar on your piano w/Audacity. Play what you want, I'd like to hear it first....then we can see what we would want to do kinda-sorta together. ;)
I'm gonna go sleep now though. -night

The only thing you could possibly bitch about is the bridge, and that's what Pat came up with....so go bicker with the master himself. The dude abides.

I think the bridge is right. Its the beginning part I don't think is right...although it sounds close enough to me.

I know, but I still don't understand the Jay Wood thing. Did he actually guest with DMB on stage or did he just put his piano in with a recording?

Well that's the ONLY tab we have right now.
Honestly, after watching Dave play it (and I know it's different for him since he uses the Baritone) I think something's a bit off, but I checked with Pat.
Pat said it's right....I dunno.
UglyNakedFella, it's time to bust out a 100% correct verse tab. Your on the clock!!! :twenty4 :rolleyes

In the mean time I'm busting a nut to Jay Wood's #41 (fake) appearance with DMB. Indeed, it is the nasty. I'm gonna do this now, I just have to. I'll have to go for a show with a mediocre recording so my guitar blends in more realistic. Time to add some fills....should be fun....or a bust. :lol I hope not.
