I answered the poll and I'm sure those of you that know me, could guess my response. To those of you who don't like either giving or receiving or both, I would just say that preferences change over time.....not just for sex but for everything.

While his group does sit more comfortably amongst the HORDE horde than the Lollapaloozers, there is much that distinguishes Dave Matthews from Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Phish, and Blowfish. Blessed with a manic, rubber-legged stage presence and an Everyguy handsome puss, he exudes a mall-hep charisma. Like Sting, he is a pop star in serious musician's clothing. In person, he has the dark, vulnerable eyes of Robert Downey Jr., the small but smart mouth of John Cusack, the elastic face and larynx of Jim Carrey, and a husky drawl women find quite seductive. And with sentiments like "hike up you skirt a little more and show the world to me"(from the hit "Crash Into Me"), he has staked his claim as a slightly lecherous loverman. On the new LP, he sings about groping, rolling in the mud, and nonmissionary sex.
"I worship women," Matthews tells me at a small cafe in his HQ, Charlottesville, Virginia. These days it's one woman, his blond, Noxzema-pretty girlfriend of four years, Ashley. David was the youngest boy in the Matthews Clan. Born to native South Africans on January 9, 1967, in a suburb of Johannesburg, he and his family moved to Westchester County, New York, when his physicist father got a job with IBM. He was just this invincible guy who suddenly became really mortal.” Two years later, David’s architect mother moved back to South Africa with her four children.
(His elder sister, Anne, was killed in a shooting there four years ago, leaving two young children who have been adopted by his baby sister, Jane. “For right now, I call it an accident, until her kids are old enough to understand,” Dave says softly. “If there’s the often imagined bearded god in the sky who made us in his image, he’s an incredibly cruel bastard.”
Being a teenager in the turmoil of South Africa, Dave found his own fun: smoking pot; listening to James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and The Wall; growing his hair halfway to his ass and going through an Ozzy-Judas Priest phase. He even formed a metal band. “It was just an excuse to drink beer,” he says now. “We only played once.” He went to three different high schools before graduating. Raised a Quaker, he opposed apartheid. “You knew that it was inherently wrong and that everything that you saw on TV and read in the newspaper should be seen as a lie.” When it came time for him to register for compulsory military service in the mid-’80s, he moved with his mother to America.
In Charlottesville, he tended bar and quietly wrote songs at home. Saxman Leroi Moore and drummer Carter Beauford were both customers, and agreed to record with Dave after hearing some of his tapes. Local bass prodigy Stefan Lessard joined at sixteen. Violinist Boyd Tinsley fiddled around on an early song, “Tripping Billies,” and never left. “I am the least competent musician,” Dave boasts. “It is a band much more than is often portrayed.” Nonetheless, in the day I spend in Charlottesville, the only member of the Dave Matthews Band I get to meet is its namesake.
The DMB spent the early ‘90s playing every dive bar, beach bash, and frat hurlathon in the Southeast. Before they made a record, they started selling merchandise through a company they named Bama Rags Inc. (which now has seven full-time employees and 10,000 square feet of warehouse; some of Dave’s drawings decorate their seventeen official T-shirts). In 1993, the band released Remember Two Things on its own, and it improbably (for an independent record) went gold. The next year they signed to RCA and put out Under The Table and Dreaming (5 million), followed by 1996’s Crash (4 million and counting), which included the Grammy-winning single “So Much To Say.”
Nevertheless, critics suddenly did a U-turn. “I don’t give a flying fleabag,” Matthews says. “I don’t think we’ve ever gotten two thumbs up from Rolling Stone. And if we do, God bless them, it means finally they’ve pulled their thumbs out of their ass.” The band issued the double set Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 last year. “It was a lot cheaper than those fifty-dollar bootlegs with some drunk fraternity guy next to the microphone screaming WOOOOO!” The record promptly went platinum. “So put that in your marijuana pipe and smoke it, pal,” Dave says.
Dave drives me to his rehearsal space in his ‘94 Subaru Outback. On the radio, there’s a report about Clinton’s meeting with Mandela in South Africa. The DMB played at the last Presidential Inaugural Gala, and Bill’s got Dave’s approval rating: “If there’s any job where you should be able to get a blowjob, it should be the president. Now, Kenneth Starr--somebody needs to suck the hell out of that man’s dick.”
After a band rehearsal, he and Ashley meet me for a strip-mall Italian dinner. He orders a few Bass Ales. (“Here I fall into the category of drunk, but in South Africa I’m average.”) Topics of conversation include animal alter egos (“I would be a butt-sniffing Bonobo ape--they’re supersexed”), John Denver; the Muppets, South Park, and, inevitably, igniting farts.
After dinner, Dave debates doing to Trax, the club where he played every Tuesday for years. He likes the old haunt, but, he explains, “I don’t want to walk in and get the crap beat out of me by some gothic bastard. There’s twenty of ‘em in Charlottesville, and they really hate me ‘cause I represent the smiling faction of indifferent, boring people.”
Maybe they should cut him some slack. After all, he did ask Soul Coughing to open on his ‘97 tour and he has openly compared Trent Reznor to Beethoven. Dave Matthews orders another Bass, lights a Marlboro, and smiles. Nothing can harsh his mellow. “I guess I’ll have to put out a techno album just to prove to people I can dig it."
