i have toyed with the idea of picking up a baritone guitar... but have no idea what brand would be good, or what i could get "cheaper" but with "decent" quality... maybe something used... anyone have any ideas or leads... preferably not ebay?

Get an electric guitar and tune it up/down, I can't remember. Thats what a bari is :).

No, a bari has a different scale.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't give advice.

Are you looking for acoustic or electric? What's your price range?
Honestly, if you're looking for a cheap electric bari, then eBay's gonna be your best source. I know you say, "other than eBay", but I don't think you're going to have much luck finding a used one otherwise. You could try instrumentexchange.com, but it's basically the same as eBay. Danelectro and Fender both made electrics that are commonly available on eBay. Only other source I can think is the Gear Mall (http://www.gbase.com/).
If you're willing to spend some more, I happen to know a guy who's selling a pretty nice Alembic (but it's probably 4x as much as the ones mentioned above).
Acoustic, I've seen one or two cheap models that I wouldn't recommend and as you get into higher-end, there are a number of nice examples. The prices vary between say the Tacoma model all the way up to custom handbuilt jobs. Probably wouldn't go lower-end than the Tacoma in an acoustic model if I were buying.
If you're looking to try one out to see if it's something you like, then assuming you've got an amp, the Danelectro is probably the way to go. Last one I saw sold on eBay for about $225 or so. That way you're not laying out a big wad of cash on something you may or may not end up using a lot.

I often wonder where you'd buy strings, especially acoustic bari strings.
