wow, i just saw some more extensive replays from this game. holly hell what a hockey match, i was pumped up just watching the replays. Emerys got some balls not only kicking birons ass but taking on another of buffaloes tough guys as well. And what was Ottawas coach doing putting his three skilled guys on the ice with buffalos tough guys? Pretty poor use of the last change. To the buffalo fans, i would be real happy about winning that game if I were you. a game like that is priceless for a teams moral. It took me back to 97 when the wings had that all out brawl with the avalanche and then pulled the game out in overtime near the end of the season. Before that moment, the avs owned us much like the sens. have owned you guys this year. After that point, we won the cup that year and beat the avs in the playoffs finally.
also gotta love Barry Melrose, referring to the emery/biron fight: "Biron really got his lunch handed to him"
referring to the next time these two teams meet and the fact that alot of ottawas tough guys were out of the lineup tonight: "ottawa will make sure to have a few more of its nuclear weapons in the lineup" :lol

I hate the Sabres so much but I loved the fact that they killed Ottawa in those fghts. Especially, since Ottawa thinks their a bunch of hardies when in reality all they do is take cheap shots. They did the same thing against the Flyers and the Flyers fucked them up in a brawl.
Oh and I'm glad Sabres fans are crying over the clean hit on Drury. Now they know how it feels to have a player in a compromising position get decked by a clean hit.

this I have to disagree with, i thought that hit last night was a pretty clean hit

I don't know... considering all of the concussions lately (The Oilers with 4 in the last month), these kinds of hits that are causing HEAD INJURIES need to be called. Keep it low to the body, you don't need to be bringing your shoulder or elbow up to complete the check - and he didn't even have the puck anymore. You can tell he was going for the shoulder/elbow because of his follow through, check the replays. It was just dirty. Unacceptable.
Hockey can NOT go in this direction. There needs to be discipline here.

first of all, yes, he didnt have the puck on his stick, but the guy who hit him (cant think of his name right now) was finishing a check. you can argue whether or not he came with the elbow, but i dont think you can argue lateness at all. Personally, liek I said before, if you wanna blame someone, blame drury for dropping his guard, its not like hes a rookie or something. Also, I wouldnt say he had his back to him, it looked like it was from the blindside yes, but again, blame drury for leaving himself in a position to get blown up like that

here you go, perhaps the dirtiest hit ive ever seen, and not just because I am a huge wings fans. Claude Lemeiux on Kris Draper in the 96 playoffs. I remember draper missed half the nest year and had to have his jaw wired shut ect. its the first hit on this video which is a dandy for those who like hockey fights and rivalries etc.

Drury was on one side of the ice, he was on the other and he had time to change his path but didnt and ran into him as hard as he could, it was dirty no doubt about it. Did you watch the game? I honestly dont remember if you did or not but we might have talked bout it

no, due to how the NHL is which sucks, its hard to see a game outside of your local area. All I got was the replays but ive watched them a hundred times and I just cant see how it was dirty. From what I see, he started his motion towards drury while drury still had the puck and bang. Could he have let up a bit, yes, but its hockey. You finish them hard

Your right that sucks, perhaps you can go for center ice? I think thats what the package is on directv. Anyways I guess this is just a issue that you either find to be dirty or clean, in my opinion it was dirty and I will stick to that opinion.

My thoughts on the Drury hit. Defintely NOT an elbow. Maybe a touch late. Neil was under no obligation to try to avoid him as someone suggested. Drury had his head down and deserved to get cranked. Hockey is a violent game, you have to try to intimidate. If you want to stop the injuries two things are needed:
1. Tighter regulations on elbow pads and sholder pads. They have increased so much over the past 20 years and when they hit a guy in the head an injury is going to occur. Sometimes a person is out before he even hits the ice.
2. Drop the stupid instigator rule. You are less likely to deliver a dirty hit if there is an enforcer ready to pounce.
Hockey needs more hitting/not less. Its a rough game..embrace it.
PPl who haven't played the game seem to think it is easy to not to hit a guy in the head while body checking. This isn't the case. A player carrying the puck will be lower than the guy laying the body.
thelindz
02-24-2007, 02:16 PM
I am all for physical play. If a game isn't physical, its REALLY BORING to watch - no hits just isn't hockey. However, charging a player and delivering a blow to the head - like Kronwall on Lupul last night - is just unacceptable. Sometimes shit happens and a clean hit can cause a concussion, but that doesn't mean these attacks should be allowed. There have been too many hits from behind into the boards (and I only watch Oilers hockey) within the past month that haven't been called (no injury, but potential for it every time) - the game is getting too dangerous - when is something gonna give?
I think the refs need to pay less attention to 'taps' on the stick/hips/hands that they like to call hooking and more attention to these dangerous plays.
Newfiedmbfan
02-24-2007, 02:26 PM
I agree with you on the on lupul hit. Left his feet and went after the head. No doubt about that one.
I do think the way to get rid of it is getting rid of the instigator rule.

The Pens are way under the cap. The Bertuzzi rumor to Pittsburgh was real hot here yesterday, but Moore's brother was the player who was involved in the Bertuzzi incident. Shero was said to be worried about hurting the chemistry by making the move.

Hey, don't worry. There is always the chance we will get him back as an UFA.
At first I was sad... but now... oh whatever. We aren't making the playoffs so who really cares who goes and who stays. I always think Kevin Lowe is making the right decision, but after the Bergy and Smytty trade in one week, I am not sure what to think. From what I've heard/read etc. etc. there has to be something we arn't seeing/hearing. In the Oilers press release, Lowe said something to the effect of 'it wasn't a business/finacial descion, it was a hockey descision' and the president/operating officer backed it up by saying someting like 'We can afford to spend the money necessary to have the kind of elite players expected. This was about the Oilers staying true to a plan'
I fail to see Lowe's logic in this trade if it was a hockey descision, as he says. Any team in the NHL would love a guy like Smyth in their lineup, and as a huge fan of his, I'm sad to not only see him go, but to go to such a shite team like the Islanders.
I will almost gaurantee Smyth will not be an Oiler come July. If money wasn't the issue something else was and he won't be back. He's a top talent player and will get many offers in July, that I am sure of.

I agree it was a mistake and a dirty hit/punch, but I also think Steve Moore deserved to get the shit kicked out of him, and was a bit of a coward for not standing up for his own actions against Naslaund. Also, the damages and all that he is seeking from Todd are absolutly rediculous. He should get something obviously, but he was a c-list hockey player at best, and should be compensated as such.

And do we really know what cause the major injury to Moore...was it the punch? the fall? or maybe the huge pileup that insued? Betuzzi just wanted to punch him a few times I believe and get a little revenge for the cheapshot on Naslaund.
As for McSorley, that guy was clearing trying to injure. He is a gutless asshole, and it's a shame he's still part of the hockey community (I'm pretty sure he's coaching a minor league team somewhere in Canada...)

I was surprised when the Sharks signed him. I've pretty much stopped thinking about his "incident" while watching him, and he's not horrible on color, though no one will ever match Drew Remenda, who left for Canada.
I do think the McSorley thing was worse than Bertuzzi's. I agree that McSorley was trying to injure, while Bertuzzi never had any intention of ending Moore's career.

I really think the Pens did well yesterday. We need some leadership for the young guys. Especially in the playoffs. I would have liked to get a defender. But I dont think Melichar will be in the lineup much longer. We also have Letang coming back next year.

On another note, why couldn't the Oilers have traded Ryan Smyth last year?!

Acutlly, the last reports I heard was that the differance between what Smyth wanted, and was offered was only 200K or 300K...which really isnt that much when you are talking millions. That being said, both the GM and Pres. of the Oilers have said it was a hockey descision, not a finacial one, so I'm not sure what to think about the whole thing right now. ( X 5 ;) )

I sure as hell hope so. He was the heart and soul of that team, a great assest to the community, both himself and managment expressed a great deal of interest in getting him re-signed (before the trade) and he is cleary a fan favourite. He is currently having a career-best season, and any team in the NHL would be lucky to have him. I just hope to see him back in the blue and copper come training camp time.

I think i called the ryan smyth on here somewhere, but i'm surprised to see it happen still. Not sure what the oilers longterm plan is, but it seems to centre around having piles of prospects and a couple of old guys. interesting.
well, i guess i'm an islanders fan at least for this year, until the oilers buy smytty back as a free agent (fingers crossed). They could have least traded him to a serious contender to give him a real shot at the cup.

In the old NHL where there was free spending it never really hurt, but the cap era NHL is going to emphasize young home grown talent that doesn't cost a lot of money.
If you win the cup then of course you don't care, but a few years down the line it's going to hurt these teams.
in the new NHL, its all about the Playoff Push... putting everything on the line when you have a shot...
ex: Atlanta and Anaheim, and to some degree San Jose, New York Iles and Detroit...
you have one playoff push with all of these stars and expensive guns and if you bust, you dont have to resign them...
thats what its about now... thats why all of these teams that made huge trades are going to suck next year...

"I do think the McSorley thing was worse than Bertuzzi's. I agree that McSorley was trying to injure, while Bertuzzi never had any intention of ending Moore's career."
am i the only one who disagrees with this? I mean, i couldnt disagree more.
I thought marty, stupidly, was essentially trying to tap brashear on his helmet to initiate a fight which, indisputably, was on its way the entire game; it was just a matter of time. He swung his stick a little too hard and down brashear went. I think it surprised marty as much as anyone.
In the bertuzzi-moore case, the fight was coming as well. but bertuzzi, also, attacking from behind, got moore in his grasp, then, over a second after grabbing him, drove moore, headfirst, with all he could muster, into the ice and continued to try to pummel him.
i thought bertuzzis actions, just on the very basic physical level, were much more aggressive than martys hesitant strike of brashear.
i ask, though, cause i may be in the minority; i dont know, but id like to hear what others think...
dmbwadeo
03-02-2007, 02:08 PM
I think the McSorley incident was basically a guy who wanted to fight the other teams tough guy. Brashear wanted no part and the stick swinging incident is what the result was. The Bertuzzi incident was a direct retribution for a hit on Naslund earlier in the season. Bertuzzi was trying to get vengeance on a specific player for a specific reason.
In both situations if the players attacked had fought, there would have been no incident. Not that that makes it right. It is just the opposite but it would have changed the outcome.

This is all I have to say about Buffalo fans.
Bandwagoners.
I guess I am a bandwagoner considering I moved from a place with no hockey team (the Carolina Hurricanes do not count because I lived 3 hours from their arena and VERY FEW PEOPLE CARED ABOUT THE HURRICANES). I moved from NC 2 years ago up to Buffalo and was amazed at the coverage the Sabres get. I listen to sports radio all day at work (literally all day) and this time of year and even before it's all Bills & Sabres. Since I never grew attached to the Panthers or Canes in NC, it was only natural that I began to lean towards the team that is within a half hour of where I currently live. I was only 20 when I moved here so it's not like I changed my whole sports routing routine just because the Sabres and Bills were close. I honestly never was attached to any baseball, football, hockey or any other pro sports or college sports team down there. I know the rules of hockey and have for a very long time, but before I moved here it was almost impossible to find a Hurricanes, or any hockey game for that matter, on tv. That's why it was easy for me to become a fan of the Bills & Sabres. So call me a bandwagoner if you like. I don't know what the definition literally is. I have not been in Buffalo nor did I have a reason to cheer for them in the days that they were horrible. I know all the backstory as to what happened with them and their whole bankrupcy issue. I know about the league nearly folding a couple of years ago. I'm aware of all of the issues around the NHL and I'm very aware of where the Sabres stand in the leauge and how fans of other teams consider many of the fans of the team to be "bandwagoners." My reason for become a fan is simple, I moved here just as they began their run into the playoffs in late 2005. So again, call me a bandwagoner or whatever you want, all I know is that the entire country is missing out on a great game since the NHL is probably the most laughed at sport in the nation. It's a shame.

This is all I have to say about Buffalo fans.
Bandwagoners.
That's bullshit. Just because a team suddenly does well doesn't mean that all of its fans are "bandwagoners." For YEARS, the slogan most heard about Buffalo sports was that "Buffalo is a hockey town with a football problem."
Hockey is huge in Buffalo...and always has been! Yes, after last year's amazing run by the Sabres (and this year's so far), there have been more people becoming more interested in the Sabres and the NHL...but is that such a bad thing? Is hockey supposed to be an "elite" sport? I got news for you...the sport is dying! And if it weren't for a TEAM like the Buffalo Sabres...one that is exciting, lightning fast, talented, deep, and unified...then hockey wouldn't be getting nearly as much press as it is! Hockey NEEDS more fans!!
People in Buffalo root for the TEAM. After years and years of losing seasons in both hockey and football, and an economy slowly on the decline, people are turning to something positive in the community..the Sabres. It gives people something to bond over, something to cheer for, something to look forward to. We need that in this area. We love cheering for the Sabres and all the young guys that have been brought up from the Rochester Americans! For me, it's been more exciting watching the young guys play so well these past few games with everyone hurt. Those Rochester players (including one who went to my high school...granted it was after I graduated and I didn't know him) get more press time on the news than anyone else on the team! So did Biron when he left...and he still does...we now listen to Flyer updates on the radio because Biron was such a loved guy around town!
So Fuck you for calling the fans bandwagoners. Typical Canadian hockey-elitism...and perhaps a tad bit of jealousy at the fact that your team won't be making the playoffs this year and just lost its star player.
Buffalo Sabres fans are proud of their team and the community for rallying around it. Get off your high Canadian horse and enjoy the game.

Also...losing Houet to injury hurt you guys for a bit, but your only down by 1 point...so no need to lose hope. I can't say I'd rather play you guys in the playoffs than Toronto or Carolina, but good luck to ya!

i got stuck in toronto because my plane couldnt land in montreal (blizzard) and had to listen to the game over cjad.com from my hotel room. not being able to watch a game, or rather, the only game on tv being the leafs, is so exceptionally painful that i cant even describe it.
sounded like a good one. but four things seriously bothered me:
1) seven goals and briere couldnt even register a point?! (on my fantasy team)
2) seven goals and drury wasnt playing?! (on my fantasy team)
3) montreal lost
4) the leafs beat the devils that night too
cheers.

interesting stat right here--The Devils are 3-7-2 in games following Brodeur Shutouts...:BANG

and has anyone looked at Anaheim's schedule for the next 15 games?
they could easily go on a 15 game winning streak with the teams they're playing... LA, PHX, Columbus, Chicago, STL, and EDM are the majority...
whoever scheduled that was a fucking moron...

Hate to tell you, I dont care about what the playoff standings are.....we have more points than the Ducks and Canucks. Actually, I thought we would have jumped Nashville with the win last night, but it looks like we remain one point behind them. I geuss we needed to beat them in regulation rather than in a shootout. Soon we will be number one, mark it down

relax on the generalizations homie.
lets all not poke fun at good hockey towns amongst ourselves (edmonton, buffalo, etc) and keep the hockey insults directed at teams like nashville, carolina, columbus, phoenix, and of course, toronto.
cheers.
kenthe only reason i won't flame you is because you (usually) have respectable opinions and I like you...

Holy Shit! Anyone see Simon's stick to the face/neck of Holik tonight? Major fine and suspension coming. Have to see it again, but it looked as bad or worse than the McSorely/Brashear hit.
