The skills comp last night was a fucking disgrace to hockey. I have seen youth hockey competitions ran better. The production was horrible. The announcers and the players didn't even know the rules on some of the skills. We got a great shot of some guy that was cleaning the ice while someone was shooting in the accuracy contest. And they couldn't even get the fucking sensors to work for the speed contest. Fucking Bush League!

it was Joe Thornton shooting at that time... the sharks always get shit on by Nat'l Broadcasts...
some guy had the nerve to say the Shark Tank is "the house that Joe Thornton built"

Doesn't this phrase pretty much sum up the NHL now-a-days??? I watched the comp. on CBC so the production was much better. Can't really say how it looked on VS. (what a shitty network) but I do agree that the players didn't look very good.
On another note, I honestly can't believe they are really changing the Jerseys. That is the worst idea ever and Im so sad that I won't get to watch the wings play in their traditional sweater that they've worn for ions anymore. The NHL can't do anything right. They do something insignificant and stupid liek changing the jerseys but vote against changing the schedules back to the old style scheduling for another year. Why? I mean how many times do I have to watch the wings play teams like Columbus and Nashville instead of Toronto, Montreal and the rest of the original 6? Fucking pathetic....Someone needs to kick Bettmans ass out of office and get a Canadien in there :violent The state of the sport is the worst its ever been and it seriously makes me sad.

well it isn't like they are changing all the logos and crests and colors... just the material and how they are stitched together... they won't be as bulky, apparently. As long as it isn't a huge visual change and they still have that "hockey" look... i won't mind too much. But if they go with those wetsuit-looking pieces of trash that team Canada wore in teh Olympics, I won't be too happy...

I'm sure that's what they're going to. That's what they've been wearing in the World Junior Championship tournament for almost 5 years now (I think) and in the Olympics last time.
In all, they make it easier for the players to skate (less air resistance) and it will cut down on accidental hooking penalties because there isn't as much loose fabric between the arms and bodies of the players.
I didn't like them at first either, but they do grow on you. They don't bother me nearly as much as they originally did.
The Fighting Sioux had test jerseys in that style for one game a few weeks ago. They were black with shoulder stripes and the great logo on the front (see avatar). I thought they actually looked really nice, to be honest.
EDIT: Here's a link from Inside College Hockey. You can see the new cut the best on the Maine and New Hampshire jerseys. This is what I would guess the new jerseys are. It's the same cut as the Olympics and World Junior Tournament jerseys.

Let me be the first one from Pittsburgh to say that I do NOT like Crosby. Sure he's got mad skills, but when I heard his coach in the minors sat him out because the other teams were playing too hard on him. Give me a break, Mario never had a problem with the other kids pushing him around in the Q. He got back at them the best way he could.. 5 goals 6 assists a game lol

2. DETROIT
3. VANCOUVER
4. NASHVILLE
5. CALGARY
6. ANAHEIM
7. DALLAS
8. EDMONTON
15-Chicago(I don't see any hope for this team).
East:
1. BUFFALO
2. NEW JERSEY
3. CAROLINA
4. OTTAWA

7. PHILADELPHIA
8. BOSTON
15-Montreal(I see them having a hard season this year).
Stanley Cup-
West-SAN JOSE-3
------NJ DEVILS STANLEY CUP CHAMPS-------
East-NEW JERSEY-4
I think this because the Devils have a stong run every few years, and with Rupp back and everyone heathy, and the fact that when he is on no one can beat Marty B, the Devils are going to be the team to watch for this year. I hope I am wrong and it is the Rangers, but I don't see the Rangers getting out of the first round again.
West:
1. SAN JOSE ...still could happen
2. DETROIT...2 spots off not bad
3. VANCOUVER...a little off on this one
4. NASHVILLE....damn this team is good right now
5. CALGARY....Flames are doing a little better than this which is awsome
6. ANAHEIM....way better than I thought
7. DALLAS....almost dead on with this one
8. EDMONTON.....close enough
15-Chicago(I don't see any hope for this team).....LA wins at sucking slightly more
East:
1. BUFFALO....Perfect
2. NEW JERSEY....Dead on
3. CAROLINA...in the 3 6 playoff match up...but in the 6th spot as of now
4. OTTAWA...one off right now so Im close enough
5. NY RANGERS....Ranger better pick it up or they will be left out (again)
6. TORONTO...need help
7. PHILADELPHIA...WOW I gave them waaaaaay to much credit
8. BOSTON...still in good postion to get this spot
15-Montreal(I see them having a hard season this year)......Power play has made this team not only really good, but fun to watch, so I was way off on this call.
Stanley Cup-

No, I didn't mean it like that. Ovi wouldn't quit on his team but if something pissed him off then he would get revenge, especially with a goal, in which his celebration would be "in your face". Guess I should buy a Wild 3rd jersey this season before they retire them. It's the best jersey, anyway.
As for home team wearing white, I always liked that best anyway.

Ken... If you're around there's and interesting article in the Hockey News in which Al Strachen argues that the Habs have all the pieces in place to make a good run at the Cup this season. Good article, but after their performance tonight, I'm not so sure.

I just wanted to say.....the new NHL still sucks. I really hate it. No Hits, to many calls, calls late in games or OT are bull shit, no fights, BAD HOCKEY. I love the game and keep going to games, but even I have my breaking point, and its getting close. Hockey is should be a hard hitting gritty sport, it has become almost as wussy as soccer, and you know what, soccer is more fun to watch right now. Just though I would rant for a while, I will still be going to the Bruins Vs. Sabers game tomorrow, but more and more I wish it was the early 1990's again.

Shootouts fucking suck, imo. Flyers played a good game last night and lost it in overtime because Tampa just has some good breakaway shooters. We were all over them in overtime though so I rather see 4 on 4 for ten minutes, instead of five.

This is the result of somebody who only likes hockey for the hitting and the fights.
Anybody who truely appreciates hockey will realize how the new rules have made the game better. The talented players are able to do their thing because they aren't getting hooked, grabbed and tackled all the time. You can't just be big and strong to play hockey anymore, you need skill.
Yes, there are hits, but there aren't as many calls anymore now that the players are getting used to the rule changes. I absolutely love how it has opened up the game and turned it more in the same game as is played internationally and in college.

these 2 are the main problems...i mean come on, the all-star game tanked in the ratings thanks to Bettman's genious idea to put it on a Tuesday night on Vs, rather than the football-less sunday...76% decrease in ratings from the 2004 ASG on a Sunday on ABC...as far as making the nets bigger, this is a flat out desperation move by the NHL to reel in more fans, and beleive me, its going to fail....BAD. 9-8 games aren't going to make the NHL better, i honestly think it would suck to see goalies getting lit up every night, i'm a big fan of the 2-1, 3-2 games. Your going to tell me a 2-1 game with both teams putting on 35 shots isn't exciting?

What's wrong with home whites? That's what it always used to be. Though I am disappointed in the elimination of the third jersey.
The new jerseys, on the other hand, aren't as bad you might think. They're easy to get used to (I already have) and eventually you stop noticing.

I don't have a problem with home whites, but I don't want to see the third jerseys go. I love the throwbacks!
Bigger nets = ridiculous... now you ARE starting to take the tradition out of the game. What next? get ride of the goalie position and make it a free for all?
I don't mind the new jerseys. They don't appear to be a big change in appearance, just material.
OLN/VS can suck it. I don't even care that the NHL got little ESPN coverage and everything was on the Deuce... the coverage was 100 times better and all of the ESPN 2 games were in HD.
Sidney is the forerunner for players in the 'new NHL'. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the NHL right now... but if you continue to cater to players like him (high offensive talent, great potential, great skills, bad attitude, pansy) but making nets bigger, getting rid of more of the physical aspects, you're destroying the game. I would rather see Sidney take 5 big hits a game than skate in alone and score 4 goals a game. Get used to it... you're a hockey player... ya candy-ass....

They're all going to the new jeresys. I think the big hold up is getting acceptable looking jersey's for all the franchises. The horizontal stripes on the hemline are hard to replicate with the side pannels.

if you asked me yesterday i woulda had a different answer.
i think sidney crosby is fucking amazing. the talent he possesses is downright shocking. and i love watching him play. that being said, what a pussy.
the habs/pens game last night was easily one of the best hockey games ive watched in years. the fact that the habs lost in a shootout after being fucked by the refs so many times (7minute powerplay for the pens? souray ejected?) was epic.
in the first five seconds of the game, off the opening faceoff, crosby got pushed down to the ground by lapierre (granted there might have been a bit of the stick butt) but the kid stayed down for close to a minute keeled over in "pain". relax man, enough of the faking. when koivu got a stick to the eye and was bleeding from his eye socket and had to have major surgery to repair his eyesight, he took it like more of a man then crosby took a mini push last night. then when play resumed (why play stopped over it is another overeaction), he put his stick between lapierre's legs and threw him down in a cheap shot. lapierre got up and laughed it off. and the refs didnt call anything because it was crosby.
anyhow. he's still a phenom talent and awesome to watch. but if you're going to play with the big boys, act like a man.
cheers.

I understand that, but I never remember Jagr or Lemieux taking the cheap shots Crosby gets. Crosby doesn't help the matter by running his mouth all the time, and by getting in scraps himself.

the refs didnt call anything on crosby because its crosby and he's the 'future of the nhl'. they're told from top down to let him do as he pleases. he has to be protected -- not just by the his linemates, but by the administration the whole nhl organization.
souray summary: colby armstrong gave a beautiful hit to koivu in the 2nd. totally knocked him off his skates. now there's two reasons souray came in from the blueline to pummel armstrong like the little bitch he is (*see note). one, because it looked from his angle like he threw an elbow into koivu's head. two, its his captain and you stand up and protect him. (note: no one got in trouble for protecting crosby earlier. digress.).
* the pens left colby armstrong in pittsburgh so that he wouldn't play against the habs tomorrow in fear of retaliation. now thats vagasil if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure it's the same design (or very similar) as worn in the junior tournaments, and worn by some college teams early in the year. The only differences will be how the run the colors for the different teams.
If you guys really worked up that much about how a jersey looks, you need to rethink the reason you're watching the game.

Other people think of the Avs the same way.

the only games theyve played a full 60 are the 9-2 blowout type games... in which the week following they mail it in and get it handed to them.
on a sidenote, Fleury got another SO today, Pittsburgh is starting to look like they belong in the playoff race. And how about Conroy/Iginla still having chemistry?

As I was back reading this thread I noticed there are talks about Crosby's on ice antics. I agree, his attitude is a little cocky, but the kid takes so many cheap shots. its the only way a team can keep control of him it seems. The Blake spear was ridiculous. The stick but was also uncalled for and the Habs' coach should learn to shit his mouth because he knows damn well the Pens start out every game with Sid taking the draw.
On the other hand, Im really, really, really tired of Pittsburgh fans. They are by far one of the most bandwagon fans in the country. It was the Steelers last year and now the Pens. Girls, who have never even knew the city had a hockey team try to pretend they "know" hockey. Granted there are plenty who do know hockey, it has been pretty big in my generation around Pitt. However, it drives me up the fucking wall when I hear, "Sid is soooo hot." Followed by, "How did he have 4 points, he only scored one goal this game". True story. Or...."He is the best player ever in the NHL". Im glad the Pens are getting support. But please just keep your "witty" hockey comments at home along with your Sidney Crosby poster. sorry for the rant...
