Because it aint working....they will not make the playoffs, and that is all that counts. I don't care if you have a player that scores 70 goals every year, if the team is not making the playoffs then its all for nothing.

look im from NJ and live very close to the Rangers and Devils arena's all I can say about it is that the Rangers keep making the mistake of passing up young talent for older guys like Jagr and Shannahan who put up great numbers but don't produce playoffs or get smacked around in the playoffs like last year. The Devils build up young talent but never go out and buy that flashy player like the Rangers do....and that has gotten the Devils 3 cups and what the Rangers do has gotten them on the golf course early 8 out of the last 9 seasons.

I won't argue the Devils aren't a good team... they have talent... that's proven by how deep they continue to go in the playoffs. Doesn't change the fact I hate them... simply cause they're the Devils...

Yeah but the Rangers were right back to their old ways this year. They gave up D. Moore, Ruchin, Sokora, and many other players for their big off season pick up Shannahan. I also like the Devils right now bc they are anti-new nhl. The new NHL calls for high scoring games and the Devils still find a way to win 1-0, 2-1 games haha. I wish the old NHL would come back, I miss fights, hooking and Hard Hits.

i couldn't be much farther from you on that one. i pretty much much stopped watching hockey in the "old nhl" because it was getting painfully boring, and nj was the worst of the bunch.

I kind of wish edmonton would go on a real losing streak, the management would realize that the team needs work, and make some moves. a win here and there gives just enough hope, but realistically, we're not making the playoffs.
i don't think it's a big surprise, with pronger and spacek, we were an 8th place team, with beregon and smid, we're going to be worse.

I really disagree. I went to the Northeastern Vs Marimack game last friday night. The game was 0-0 in to OT where Northeastern scored a thrilling OT goal to win it in front of the home crowd. There were hard hits, lots of action, no bad calls to ruin the game, and a few fights...to me that was the most fun hockey game I have watched all year, that kind of action and close game does not happen in the NHL anymore. High Scoring games does not always mean more excitement. The new NHL has made Defence pointless bc no leads are safe. Here is a little article of people that are calling for OLD TIME HOCKEY to come back... http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/8998956438936092671

All this bitching about Crosby is getting old.

from tsn:

No player, not Sidney Crosby or anyone else, should ever get a free pass. If you commit a turnover in overtime that leads to the winning goal, like Crosby did against Montreal, you get called on it. And if you embellish a Frances Boullion high stick to the face or a Jason Blake jab to the mid-section, you're going to hear about that too.

But in the wake of criticisms from Ken Hitchcock to Ted Nolan to Aaron Downey, amid 21,000 Montreal fans chanting, "faker, faker" on Sunday afternoon, perhaps a little perspective is in order.

Sidney Crosby is 19 years old. He leads the NHL in scoring and by a considerable 12-point margin. He is arguably the game's best player.

If the worst anyone can come up with is that he tries too hard to create room for himself by overselling fouls, well, let's be real here. It is likely what he felt he had to do to survive minor and junior hockey. He's a smart kid, he will no doubt figure it out as he goes in the NHL.

Wayne Gretzky used to whine to the refs too much for some people's liking; Mario Lemieux used to disparage the game itself. They found their balance, so will Crosby.

What's ironic is that while Crosby's critics would try to convince you embellishment equals soft, the truth is he plays with great jam. He's like a bull terrier. He initiates more physical play and is at his best in heavy traffic like few others who have his skill and productivity.

So, no, he gets no free pass, but it would seem there's a difference between calling him on it and piling on.

For TSN.ca, I'm Bob McKenzie.

cheers.

messier may be the next Rangers GM. Thoughts?

i think this may be a good thing. Sather while better as of late needs to go. Messier would hopefully get the rangers some more publicity and thats always a good thing. It would be interesting to see how well he does.

He peddles ColdFX and I bought it about 2 months ago and havent been sick since, so hopefully that means he'd be a good GM, too.

Hmmm....maybe because the Wings are the Finest Hockey organization in the world for the last 10 - 15 years and probably the second best ever behind Montreal. Definitely the only original 6 team that has been worth a shit since the early 90's. I wouldnt say any city in Canada deserves this title. I mean common, they havnt had the cup in their country since what? 92? 93? Minnesota, eh, thats debateable. They do turn out some fine hockey players and they have a shit ton of good minor league orgs. They arent going anywhere. It would be on Mario's part not to keep them here. One a new arena would get him a bigger offer for the team, two, this team has the potential to be great. 3. With a playoff run, this team will continue to sell out games into the future. Its a win-win situation for Mario and the City of pittsburgh to keep the Pens there. The deal is really good. I think it will all depend on Hasek. But I don't think he will be able to play at an outstanding level throughout the playoffs to win the Cup. But that is just my opinion. Best francize in the world? gimme a break... I agree with you about MOntreal... but I'll put Edmonton up there with the Habs before the Wings. Yes, they're near the top... but they are not the best.
No, Minnesota might not have the best pro team in the country, but I think they have the most loyal, best group of fans. even when they're loosing, those fans are there to see hockey and they know what's behind the pro team. They know the minor league players and they know the junior and college players coming up. Most fans couldn't name their pro team's AHL affiliate if you asked them. Yes, it will depend on Hasek. I agree with you, I dont think hes got what it takes to make it through either which is why they wont win the cup. lol, Chelly's amazing isnt he. and the crazy part is, Ive heard interviews with him and he says he feels better than he did when he was in his twentys and he wants toplay 3 more seasons :eek He's great and the bars he has opened around the area arent too shabby either.

Actually, yes, the Wings have a sick SICK goalie prospect in Grand Rapids called Jimmy Howard. They actually were contemplating possibly making him the starter if they couldnt find anyone this year but since they found Hasek they decided to keep him in the AHL one more year. I dont know exact numbers and I would have to look them up and dont feel like it but look for him to be our starter in the next 3 years I owuld say.

You're DUE?!??! My team hasn't won a cup in nearly 40 years now!!!!
Hell, half don't know what the AHL is!

I hadn't heard that... I konw Kansas City has had an offer on the table for months now... in fact, they already have an arena for them...

haha yea I geuss we arent really due. Whos your team? Well I do still have to disagree, the wings are the best hockey franchise out there. Year after year they do nothing but win....and now that they added Yzerman as VP and the legendary Scotty Bowman as a scout, I see it staying that way. Overall, ever, yea, your right, its close but I will give you Edmonton. Possibly, how many cups do they have?

Yea, Ive heard Minnesota is a die hard hockey state but trust me, we arent too shabby around here either. Despite probably the highest tcket prices in the game and the fact that we only get a handful of good matchups a year due to the shitty scheduling, people still pour in.

KC would be sad as well

if the city gets them a new arena, they'll be there forever. I'll give it to that city, they back their sports teams.. it's up to the city officials to keep them there.

maybe if Hasek scares the competition by choking off a few players with his stick... :rollseyes

Im really pulling for pittsburg....Ive always been a fan of the Penguins.....especially during the Lemeiux and Jagr days. I really hope they can keep that team there for the sake of the whole league. It would be a real shame to see a hockey team in some stupid piss poor area like oklahoma. I mena who the hell knows anything about hockey in OK?

They did it with Telqvist in Toronto and then traded him when he didn't produce... they do it with every goalie in Philly and every goalie in Philly has one great year, then plays like shit and leaves town... yea, all five during or around the Gretzky and Messier years I would assume. Thos edmonton teams were just disgusting......probably the best hockey teams ever assembled.

Leafs are a good choice. I love all the original 6 teams, especially the habs and Leafs. so much history there

haha tapping and untouched base....yea right. No one cares about hockey in those parts on the Country. Hockey is something that should have stayed in the East and the Northern areas of the midwest and canada. All the expansion has hurt the game more than anything else (besides maybe Bettman himself)....I truly believe this but what can you do....its was gonna happen sooner or later

Yea, you hear a toooon of talk about Howard on the radio around here. Especially after the wings got bounced yet again in the first round last year and legacy played so poorly. Everyone wanted Howard to start this year but its clear he needs one or two more developmental years.

as a montreal fan, i wouldnt be too happy with that.
aucoin and smolinski are old men who are majorly declining in production (and injuries to boot).

though, we do have a defensive problem come year-end and need to dish someone, and sammy hasn't clicked in montreal as of yet. i still think it would be a better trade for chicago, or we could do much better elsewhere with that package.

im waiting for carb to just try koivu, kovalev, samsonov on his ever-juggling lines just to see if it sparks.

the success of the koivu-higgins-ryder line was last year and this year until higgins was injured. the success could still be there, except you wouldnt know since carbo only put them back together for the first time last game.

It would be sad to see Smolinski go but they need to do whatever they have to do to get rid of Aucoin. If Montreal was willing to throw in a used puck bag I would give them Culimore too. The Hawks have a solid group of young defensemen that just keep getting better the more they play.

This is what I think. I am sick of this "building for the future" type shit.

All we have is right now, there is no point in trying for next year, we can work on that during the summer. Make trades now for right now. We need a d-man and we WILL get one - even if it costs us a couple wingers or whatever.

soft goals? the first goal was a rebound off an unbelievable save. the second was a 5 on 3, another rebound. the third goal umberger walked right around lidstrom. not the greatest goal to give up, but nick certainly didn't help much on that one. the fourth and firfth goals were just good shots. philly was skating and the wings were watching. joey mac held the wings in the game as long as he could. there was only so much he could do tonight.

i can't fathom seeing ryan in any other jersey than an oilers one. that being said, i would be jumping for joy if the wings found a way to snag him. he would be the difference between another early exit and a deep run. ryan smyth is still the most underrated player in the game. i haven't cheched the standings recently, but is edmonton in that bad of shape that they would trade the heart and soul of the franchise?

soft goals? the first goal was a rebound off an unbelievable save. the second was a 5 on 3, another rebound. the third goal umberger walked right around lidstrom. not the greatest goal to give up, but nick certainly didn't help much on that one. the fourth and firfth goals were just good shots. philly was skating and the wings were watching. joey mac held the wings in the game as long as he could. there was only so much he could do tonight.

ok, 2 then the first umberger goal went right through Mac. although umberger got around Nick., it was an awful angle. Then that crazy backhand shot, good placement but he should have had it. Never-the-less, the wings did look slower. No worries though.

it was kind of expected, after playing last night and all. but definately a lousy finish to a game they could have won. i still think they better make a move or two if they want to have any shot at a playoff run. i've seen about all i want to of lilja, the pie-line with a jersey on. and what the hell was he doing turtling like claude lemieux after he ran gagne from behind? if you're man enough to do that than you should be man enough to defend it. that was embarassing.

lol, well, I was listening to 1270 quite a bit today and it sounds like the wings are planning on making not just moves but biiiiiiiig moves according to T-foster and Villenti (not sure if your a 1270 guy but they're on the sports inferno). Word on the street includes possible moves for Forsberg, Bertuzzi, Guerin, and a trade to get rid of Lang from what they said. I would kinda like to see them pick up a Defensemen. Not really sure whos out there on D though.

there is some good D on ther FA market this summer and even at the deadline...hopfully your leafs make a move Whiteyme too.. although if they talked sense into McCabe and he stopped taking bad penalties and started playing better positional D, he'd be a top notch defender. Unfortunately all their defensive defensemen are slow as shit and the rest of the defense is there to pound the puck from the blue line. Gill has trouble turning and skating, Kilger gets caught pinching all the time... the rest of the D is always hurt or recovering... I've seen Gill play great D on a 5-3 PK... but just as often as I've seen great D, I've seen him give up the passing lane, get stepped around... so sloppy

Oh trust me...I'm worried about all of the injuries. However, I have no doubt that they will make the playoffs. It's a good thing they have all of those wins built up, otherwise the injuries would be extremely devestating to the team. By the time the playoffs roll around everyone will be healthy. I'm sure there will be a few injuries pop up between now and then, but I just hope they can keep the major ones out of play. I don't want to see the same thing that happened in last years playoff run...40 Sabres defensemen going down. Ouch! The Sabres have an abundance of depth, though. They'll work through it.

I wasn't aware American sports broadcasting was so terrible.

I think I'm pretty fortunate to have most Oiler games on Sportsnet (which is amazing), CBC, and a few on TSN. All great networks.

versus and NBC - NBC had weekend games and every single Cup finals game

So were the playoff games regional coverage so all areas got their teams? Fuck this VS shit.

Don't know if any of you guys get it but Hockey Night in Canada each weekend is hot sex.

hockey night in toronto is the worst way to watch hockey.

i dont enjoy sportsnet programming. unless i watch it on mute.
cbc hnic is like watching the game being called by leafs fans. its irritating, obnoxious, biased, and could bob cole be any older?
tsn is 60% okay. and only that high because pierre maguire rules (the nhl on nbc was lucky to scoop him).

i watch on rds.

cheers.

"Apparently some guy in Edmonton build a bad ass hockey rink in his back yard and converted his mower into a Zamboni."

We get Versus here in Buffalo, but the broadcasts are horrible. They try to use all of these wierd camera angles to show how advanced their crews are but they just end up ruining the TV experience. Rick and Jim on MSG are excellent and the broadcast is superb. I'm glad I'll be at the arena tomorrow for the Flyers game so I don't have to watch it on Versus.

for the most part, i'm almost positive they do. When living in NY, the devils network (FSN) provided coverage for the conf. quarters and semis, so i'm sure FSN pittsburgh will do the same if theres scheduling conflicts with Vs.

Good...I would be livid...though it would give me an excuse to go to the bar...Oh wait...if the Pens make the playoffs I would be there anyways...Dont need more excuses..

i still find it amazing that the San Jose Sharks are 7 points out of not making the playoffs...

I have to agree with this post. Especially the section about sportsnet. Holy shit...everyone on that station is annoying. They actually dumb down sports.

Tsn isn't bad.

HNIC would be good if not for all the leafs games. The west games are covered well. I like the hotstove segment after the 2nd period.

Perhaps your broadcasting in the East is different - but I enjoy SNWest for the most part. The odd commentator drives me crazy - aka Peter Loubardias or whatever his name is... However, they do cover some insane amount of Oiler hockey so I guess I'm watching it regardless. Sometimes I mute it and put CHED radio on in the background, which is good.

And as for CBC... I often look forward to HNIC. I like Hrudey and MacLean, but Scott Oake tends to drive me nuts. I'd say its better than American channels - I've seen some NBC hockey and it is just terrible.

ok, makes sense now. it blanked out that you watched the west games on hnic ("the 2nd game") and aren't exposed to bob cole and the leafs every broadcast. yea ron maclean and kelly hrudey are pretty hip. i actually do love don cherry's antics too. its just the play-by-play and constant leafs coverage that i can't handle.

cheers.

Go Sabres! Great win tonight. I've gotta give the Flyers credit...they didn't roll over, they fought back and almost tied it up. The Sabres played like crap in the second and beginning of the third period. They pulled it out though. Great atmosphere at the arena tonight too.
