Anyone own one? I'm pretty sure they're quite expensive..so i'd be suprised. but, i think they would be especially fun to play..i.e. the new 12 string dave matthews has been using on the new songs..anyone?

They're interesting. I don't know if I'd want to buy the soprano 12 that Dave uses, but I wouldn't mind playing around with one for a week or two.

According to the Road Page, Dave also has a Veillette acoustic/electric baritone 12 string. Check out the sound samples of that guitar. Badass.

Veillette has some sweet sounding guitars.

Those sure are nice. I'd like to check out their shop sometime.

Looked on the 'users' list that was scrolling there. Lots of impressive names... then it ends with Lauryn Hill. WTF?

I wrote to them awhile back about purchasing one, here was the response I got.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the email!

We certainly are aware of Dave's Gryphon - he got it directly from us!
(Along with a Baritone 12, and another Gryphon for Stefan, to add to his Bari 12 and 4-string bass...)

His instrument is actually our Acoustic Gryphon, in Deep Red.

We are actually just starting a group of 4 Acoustic Gryphons, including a 2nd one for Dave.
So far, only 3 are spoken for - so, if you were interested, you could even have one that
is built from the same woods, at the same time, voiced the same, etc....

The direct-sale price for the Gryphon Acoustic is $3015. This is for the straight-up Acoustic version.
The pickup/preamp system costs an additional $325.

Alternately, we do have a red Mk-IV (the chambered solidbody) Gryphon out on the
road with a dealer rep - we could probably get it back in about 4-5 days.
It has a spruce top with black binding, so it's not completely unlike Dave's Red, Spruce-topped guitar.

For that guitar (the Mk-IV), we might be able to offer some sort of price break if there has been any
'play wear' from our dealer rep showing it around. I can't say what that might be until we get the guitar
back and look at it. The normal direct-sale price on that piece would be $2365, but we would offer it
for $2175 (assuming there's no play wear).

Please let us know what you think, and please feel free to call or email if you have any other questions!

Thanks,
Martin

I think interest in this guitar is a slightly different case considering how unique the guitar is.

He wasted his money. Not because the guitar is bad, but because he is. In my opinion.

what did you imagine they cost? lol

A "professional-level" guitar can start at 500 bucks. acoustics start at around 1200 but still. :lol

the thing is, is that professional doesnt mean expensive in the music industry, it means what sounds good to you.

people knock on kids for playing squier or knockoff strats in middle/high school, but if you are professional and you like the way they feel and sound. who is going to stop you?

anyone know of a nock off brand??

rouge? :lol they make EVERYTHING!

but seriously, this guitar is so strange that i doubt there is, or if there is it isnt a knockoff just another brand of similar caliber.

I just though there would be a lot more tiers than there seem to be, with several of them dedicated to artists with the money to pay increasingly large sums for diminishing improvements in quality.

i think 5,000 is kinda the top of the top. even master built guitar don't go for much more than that.

Custom taylors and martins run 4-7 grand depending on the level of fancy stuff you want on it. but those customs you can buy the generic for half the price or less and they still sound the same if not similar.

but you will almost never see a musician playing with a 10,000+ instrument.

where you see the BIG money is the vintage instruments. 1800 Violins and turn of the century guitars fetch big money (100,000 if not millions). but you only see classical musicians play them live, gigging bands will almost never play their good stuff outside of the studio. and even then, good stuff to gigging musicians rarely has the demands of classical musicians.

The most expensive guitar on the NYC Guitar Center's wall of disgustingly priced guitars was $81K last time I was there for a 1951 model, don't know enough about guitars to know what it was though. Lots of others around the $20k mark.

The most expensive in the whole store that I saw is a Martin for $150,000, but mostly because its a 100 years of aviation special edition. And that means it has very ugly pictures of planes and a spaceship on it. It's seriously the ugliest guitar I've ever seen.

I bought one on Ebay last summer for I think $1100 used. It is pretty neat, I don't use it much though. It sounds AMAZING plugged in and running through a system though.

Mine is a charcoal color.
