Just heard from from a reliable source that DMB are again looking at touring Australia. Anyone else heard the same rumour? I'm thinking another tour on the back of a 'blues and roots' festival in Byron.

somehow I don't think crocodile hunters are going to decide if DMB tour here again. I suspect that solid record sales and the largest sold out tour they've ever done outside the U.S. would possibly have more impact on their decision....
if and when i get more info on this i'll post it asap.

I was lucky enough to have a friend studying down there a few years back when they played a few shows. I made it to 2 shows... it was amazing to see how small the crowds were and how "new" it all seemed. I think it was great for the band to get back to that level and a great opportunity for fans to make a long vacation and see them in the way we could have only if we saw them 15 years ago...
I'd make the trip again in a minute.:monkey

In a blurb from an Australian newspaper:

Festival fever
THIS column was the first to break the news of next month's Robbie Williams shows at Suncorp Stadium. Here are my concert forecasts for next year. Bob Dylan, riding high with his Modern Times album, will tour mid-year. Earlier, we'll feel the impact of tours by Keith Urban (May), John Mayer (April) and the Dave Matthews Band (April).

You beat me to it! I was reading the paper this morning, and it was the last thing I was expecting to come across - a nice surprise!
It also says that DMB will be headlining the Friday night of the Byron Blues and Roots Festival.
And the guy who writes the column (Ritchie Yorke) is not only a reliable source, he's also a fan I believe - if I recall correctly, he was full of praise for Dave when he won that Grammy for Gravedigger, and if I dig out my newspaper clipping from their last Aussie tour, I'm sure he said good things then too!
But this is great news! :bounce

Why?
1) Gomez are on Dave's label - they'll do what he tells 'em dammit (j/k)
2) We already know they're gonna be at the East/West fests together - why not split the bill on the "rest" of their aussie tour?
3) Irrespective of split bill/openers, they'll likely need a larger venue than the palais (~2700 capacity). Last tour they sold out 2 nights there in record time. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see 'em go back there but just can't see it happening. The only 3 other 'usual' venues in Melbourne that are larger are:
a) Festival hall - capacity of ~8k i think. it is just horrible tho. if they play there I'll genuinely consider not going - which is a big call for me.
b) Rod Laver - ~ 15,000 I think its too big for DMB. Is particularly horrible when not packed.
c) Music Bowl - theoretical capacity of up to 30,000 - BUT only ~2000 of those are seated - the rest is lawn. More realistic capacity is 15,000 (as seen at the MPH gig recently). I think on their own they could sell ~6k + Gomez would get them at least another 3k. The venue would hedge their bets - if they do only sell 7-9k everyone on the lawn just gets a bit more space.
*shrug* that's it. That's all I've got. ;)

Sydney needs an amphitheatre...unless they did something to Centennial Park just like what was done when Jack Johnson played there a couple of years back, or use the Domain. Otherwise, I guess it'll probably be the Hordern Pavillion or maybe the Entertainment Centre if they were to do just the one show.

What about a John Mayer + DMB double bill tour in Aus? Then they could certainly sell out venues a lot bigger than they would do individually, and would raise the profile of both hugely.

Hmmm...personally I'd rather see DMB w/ one of their previous openers who will be at Bluesfest as well. If Randolph came down (or Gov't Mule or Trey as people are wishing on the Buesfest forum) that would probably be more appealing.

I still dream of the day when Dave Gray and DMB tour Down Under together. April 2006 would have been perfect. :angel
Or Gov't Mule ... (drool)

Definately!
My vote is for smaller venues like last time. NO general admission venues (Horden, etc). That'd be a waste of a perfectly good Warehouse membership.

Theres always Vodaphone Arena smaller than Rod Laver and has done shows in the past i.e. Motley Crue
I also thought of A day on the Green option as well i.e. at Rochford winery in the Yarra Valley for something a little different (I haven't conviced myself fully to this option for full band yet but it'd definately suit a Dave and Tim show or Dve solo)
But I definately support the Gomez/DMB bill it would be awesome it funny that I have friends who are massive fans of Gomez but have never heard of DMB til I play it but until early last year I'd never gotten into Gomez!!!!!!!!!!

Nowhere near as bad as it will be for the cricket this summer...:lol I knew Hordern would be the logical choice though.
Ticketing period opens tomorrow morning at 1am, btw...doing my conversions. First time I'll have done this...does my credit card get charged when the confirmations are posted and not before, because I want to make sure I pay off enough of my plastic to do so. From Ticketek's page about the Hordern:
There are 3 different modes of seating used at the Hordern Pavilion:
(1) Elevated Reserved Seating and Floor at Front of Stage
(2) All Reserved Seating
(3) All General Admission
Customers are advised to check the event page for more information
I guess we'll find out soon...hopefully it's all reserved.

Hi all.. Just got the email announcing Australian dates !! Woohoo!! :)
Saw them at Bluesfest a couple of years back but we won't go to Bluesfest again till they move venues.. Just TOO overcrowded these days.
Anyhow every show i've been to over the past few years at the Hordern have been General Admission with 'stands' on the side with seating if you want to be seated/elevated.
My dilemma is whether to join the Warehouse or if i'll be able to just buy tickets through ticketek etc.
Any Aussie fans members of Warehouse? What are the benefits apart from the buying of tickets? Being that they only tour here every few years and they may be all GA..
Cannot wait.. Think i have to go Both nights dependant on the price i guess.. nah actually regardless of price.

Yay Yay Yay! I lurked around here just before their last tour and saw them in Sydney. I'm not sure about their venue this time - Horden Pavillion is definately THE music venue, but I've never been there. Anyone else been to a show at the Horden?
Stop wondering and start booking flights guys.

I've seen Gomez and Spearhead in past years at the Hordern and it's a great venue.. Not exactly intimate but certainly no Entertainment centre let alone Superdome type size.
As i said up there ^^ it's always been all General Admission with unreserved seating on stands at the side if you choose which has always been a cool option for a short ass like me .. :D

That sucks. Kinda makes a Warehouse membership worthless hey. Unless you're going to hit up Melbourne as well, as I'm pretty sure that Vodafone will be all reserved seats. Maybe they should section off like the centre front area for Warehouse members, kinda like Warehouse preferred Lawn at US Amphitheatre shows. Wishful thinking though I know.

Their last tour was so rushed they probably want to take it slow this time, do a little sightseeing ... maybe hang out at Ben's house?
"My prediction is ... Mr Harper will probably be in residence at the new home he and his close mate Jack Johnson have built on the NSW north coast." Daily Telegraph: 23 November 2006
I'd put money on Ben Harper dropping in on them on Friday night. Then Dave popping up in one or two other performances over the course of the weekend. Maybe like the closing performance of Michael Franti and "friends" from this year.

So guys.. Do shows ever sell out through Warehouse?

They only get so many tickets per show to sell through the warehouse, and the sydney shows there's no reserved seating (i think, please don't hold me to that!!!!)
I did it, but it really just depends on what you wanna do.
Are you going to both shows?
Kanki
11-28-2006, 01:23 AM
Yeah I'm hoping to go to both shows.
I've never joined warehouse as they don't get here much so it hasn't seemed worth it.
Last time they were here we went to Bluesfest so could only catch the one show..
USD $50 joining fee is more than half the price of a ticket so i'd rather just buy general sales as long as i dont miss out.. And yeh the Hordern in Sydney has always been unseated when i've been to shows there.

I wonder if they'd open up the roof at Vodafone...not that I'm able to get there, but it's probably the closest to an open air show that they'd do here.
As for Warehouse tix, the only real advantage is getting them before the public do in the case of the Sydney shows. An all GA venue annoys me. How are security with cameras and the like at the Hordern, Kanki (if you know)?

Cant be sure re cameras at the Hordern sorry.. We never tried to take one to previous shows there but my other half is now a keen photographer so i'm sure will be interested to find out too.
I'm sure at Spearhead at the Hordern there were plenty of cameras..as Franti always encourages people to photograph or record as much as they like..
But even at shows such as the recent U2 concert at Telstra stadium where the tickets said in huge print NO CAMERAS everyone was flashing away.. making me think it's just proffessional type stuff they try and restrict .. ? Is it the venue or artist that decide restrictions on this sort of thing i wonder?
2steppinKJ
11-28-2006, 03:48 AM
My camera's not a compact point and shoot (although my mum has one that would be easier to conceal somehow)...but looking through the Warehouse ticketing policy they say no still or vid cameras permitted, yet all the traded DVDs and pics that people get make it seem that the security at the venue are where the buck stops at instead of the band. In any case, the cloakroom at the Hordern's a couple of bucks per item so if I'm not, not too much of a worry I guess.

FYI since a few asking bout the Hordern ..it's located where the Easter Show used to be and what was known as Fox Studios and now the Entertainment Quarter of something.. so plenty of places to have a drink and feed before and after the show right outside.

I'm not expecting a bad view by any means :) As a guide, I worked a concert last year that was held at the Hillsong Conevntion centre (same sort of capacity and seating arrangements) and the view from the back wasn't too bad at all. And the Entertainment Quarter is pretty nice - last year I took a look around and there's a very nice ice creamery.
I decided to delete my 11/4 request and buy a ticket from Ticketek for that show. I somehow doubt my credit card will be able to handle the 3rd ticket.

My friends from NV are looking into it. They did all the shows last time too.
For all you US fans organizing your travel...
Buy your interstate flights from http://www.flightcentre.com.au/flights
Their search means you can compare all the airlines flights at once, including the cheaper http://www.virginblue.com.au and http://www.jetstar.com
When you fly to Melbourne, fly to Tullamarine airport ... don't fly to Avalon airport. Avalon flights are cheaper, but another 55km in a taxi to Melbourne $$$
Also if you are in Sydney for Easter instead of the Blues Fest, don't forget THE GREAT ESCAPE music festival http://www.thegreatescape.net.au It has alot of acts from the East & West Coast festivals ... Wolfmother, Gomez, The Living End, Hilltop Hoods, Missy Higgins, Fat Freddy's Drop, Feist, Ziggy Marley, Ben Kweller, Lee Scratch Perry, Bob Evans, The Vines, Fishbone, The Fumes... with more to be announced
And Melbourne Comedy Festival http://www.comedyfestival.com.au

The only problem is that there won't be much open on a Tuesday and Wednesday night i don't think. I went to see Jason Mraz at The Venue (which is pretty much across the road) and there was hardly anything open. But there is a good bar/resteraunt on the corner and a chinese resteraunt on top of that.
And i doubt that channel v would be filming anything live, because they are lazy and don't do anything live anymore.

Xavier is Brilliant.. He will blow you away with his one man show set up..
He had really gained popularity in Australia through playing festivals the past few years and yeh is now selling out large venues such as the Enmore.
Slide, stomp box , djembe , blues harp and plays dij with the best of 'em.
I read someone say ' He is pure rythm ' which i think sums him up nicely.. :)
Great choice.. If you haven't seen or heard him Don't miss checking him out!!

Glad to hear DMB will be back again, our patience has been worth it! I'll be going to the local show in Brisbane of course, same venue as last time though (just around the corner from Grey Street :p )
If anybody's interested, my friend took the attached photo of the ad for their concert - its a somewhat different style to the "DMB 07" stuff on their website at the moment.
Does anybody know if their next studio album is likely to be out by the time they come down under? Or will it be like last time, where they just have a single out on the radio? Either way, it sounds like they'll be promoting it a bit, so fingers crossed they'll do some TV appearances too. Seeing as they're playing Vodafone Arena, and appeared on Rove (read: Channel 10) last time, they might record an intimate little gig for Vodafone Live at the Chapel? :hump

I was up nice and close thanks to the Warehouse, so it was pretty good, but I generally think its a good venue for its size - big enough to fit a largish crowd, but you'll generally get a good view from anywhere. To give you an idea, they play basketball there too, so the seating in the middle is all on flat ground, but the sides and back are sloped quite nicely.
where in brisvegas is that poster - i may have to go a hunting while im up here for the swimming
That one was on Logan road at Greenslopes (corner of Plimsoll Street i believe, just near the shopping centre, its on the southside of the city). They usually only stay up there for about a week though, and its only an average size poster, not a whole billboard unfortunately. I remember seeing a poster somewhere else for their last tour, cant remember where, i'll let you know if i do.
Oh, and be sure to go get your photo taken in Grey Street at Southbank!

It's a bit annoying that the Sydney show is only general admission; there's not a lot of reward for getting in first. The advantage is by getting there early on the day people can get up the front, the disadvantage is people who buy tickets in less of a rush than you may get in front.

Last year they really weren't all that strict on seating. Everyone moved forward and stood in the aisles. My seat on the floor was row VV, and I moved up to stand in the aisle in between the 5th and 6th rows. If anyone has Connor Cronks' recording of that show, that's were he was standing too.

Still didn’t work with Brisbane security – they weren’t gonna let me in til I insisted…I was taken backstage and given the 3rd degree til the tour manager came and sorted them out. Then I put my stand up and the stupid wench sitting behind me was complaining when my stand was at seated head height that it was blocking her vision. Dunno what your budget is, but Rydges is pretty much next door to the venue, and since its at South Bank, there's plenty to see and do there, within walking distance to the CBD (just across the river), and the public transport around that area is very good.
Try going to www.whereis.com.au and put in South Bank as the suburb, you can see where the venue is (Convention and Exhibition Centre) and try turning on the hotel icons and you can see what else is around. You could even stay somewhere in the city, and just walk or get a bus over, it really is one of the easiest places to get to.

Try going to www.whereis.com.au (http://www.whereis.com.au) and put in South Bank as the suburb, you can see where the venue is (Convention and Exhibition Centre) and try turning on the hotel icons and you can see what else is around. You could even stay somewhere in the city, and just walk or get a bus over, it really is one of the easiest places to get to.
Thanks for that. Is the venue really on Grey St? How weird is that?

Does anyone know how many rows might have been reserved for WH members in Brisbane?
Well, I got 4th row in Brissy...so I'm guessing the front 3 rows...
