Yea and Beckett could have 20 wins already if the offense would hit the ball when he's pitching, or if the bullpen could close out games, or if the other team didn't show up...

If every hitter in baseball was having a career year then pitching would be FUCKED!
Your mention of Troy Glaus reminds me of a fantastic story. In the spring of '06 I was in Milwaukee to cover the Frozen Four and after the bars closed we ended up hanging out in the hotel lobby of our hotel (R. Kelly couldn't make it) and the Diamondbacks arrive at about 3:00 a.m. for the second series of the season. We got booted and the obvious next move was to move to the balcony overhanging the lobby. For some reason one of the guys I was with started yelling shit about Glaus, so we all started trashing the guy. I awoke the next morning and remembered he signed with Toronto in the offseason.

Martin won 2 rings...
As a manager? I don't think he did; just the one in 77 for sure; and I could be wrong - not sure if he got one the year after. IN 78 he was replaced in July by Bob Lemon and then the Yanks caught fire. Not sure if he got a ring for his managing in the first half.

Maybin is going to shit all over the Yanks tonight.
He has a long bright future. I think he will end up an all star at some point. Looks good with the bat but still shaky in the OF but that is an experience issue and Yankee Stadium is not the best place to make an OF debut.
I told everyone to watch out for Buccholz and he's showing exactly why he's the best pitching prospect still in the minors today...
He is nasty, another with a VERY high ceiling. Surpised to see him this year though to be honest.
I think Clay, Phil Hughes, and Joba are going to be horses for our rivalry for a long time. All are just nasty when they are on.

Yeah, I knew that so I can cut him some slack as a 20 tear old in his second game in a hostile environment. Switching positions is tough for anyone - even a superstar like A-Rod had troubles adjusting to third at times but I think he has it figured out by now. I felt bad for him because he looked lost.
AL MVP race is down to two guys IMO, Magglio and A-Rod and I have to give A-Rod the edge right now because the Yanks are about 20 games out without him, basically he means more to the Yanks than Miggy does to the Tigers,

Didn't realize you were a Tiger fan and I know you're a borderline Yankee hater if memory serves but I agree with you and your opinion means more since you are a Tiger fan who would be making a case for Miggy if A-Rods was not having such a great year and carried the Yanks on his back for three months while they were playing awful!! Money issues maybe? I am not sure who is up for FA for them after the season to free up some payroll.
Either way; after this season I do not see opting out, fans are behind him finally and he is raking. Even if he does hit the FA market I think the Yanks will offer him what he wants and he'll be back anyhow; unless someone offers him a deal that absolutely blows this one out of the water in terms of length ans salary; and I do not see how much more he can reasonably expect in money.
Counterpoints though, the NY writers are still nitpicking him, some of the fans are still not sold, and there is the very real Scott fucking Boras issue; he is a pariah! Still I think he stays. Plus, he leaves and he will forever have the stigma of not being able to hack it when the spotlight is on. He runs from NY and that further illustrates that.
Of I had to pick the irreplaceable Yankees it is A-Rod, Posada, Jeter, and Mo. They're the glue, everyone else is a supporting cast to an extent. Though the young guys could blossom nicely; Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy have high ceilings, Clippard too may turn out well despite that they have both been set back by their call ups and bad numbers during the brief time in NY. Malky and Cano will be up for big paydays too soon and they are already both above average. Point is Yanks have a nice core now but if A-Rod leaves that is a gaping hole! I know they are free agents but I don't see Mo or Posada going to another team despite any offers, they bleed pinstripes!

Man when I think about how much I used to love Roger Clemens as a baseball fan growing up, and he does shit like he did in tonight's game. This rookie hits a homerun off you (his 1st ever), and so what do you do later? You hit him.
LAME.
Clemens, you're a fucking douchebag. Because this kid bested you in one individual at-bat, he deserves to be plunked. That's real fucking mature and sportsman like. I hope you blow out your arm, and/or catch Jason Giambi's old parasite disease, or whatever the fuck that was.

I do not think Clemens meant that to be honest. I understand pitchers will occasionally drill people after a home run but not in that situation. Winning is more important than revenge for a homer, especially for a competitor like Rocket.
Examine the realities of that situation. He hit Mabin in the 6th when it was 2-1 Yankees.Yanks were clinging to a run lead at the time against a solid offensive team. Clemens is smart enough to not intentionally hit someone that would put the tying run on second (Inge moved to scoring position after the HBP and the go ahead run on first. Granderson was coming to the plate and he is is perfectly capable of tying that game (.288, 16 HR's, and 56 RBI's) or giving Detroit the lead. No way you would rather pitch to Granderson than a rookie who had just collected his first MLB hit two innings before, it is just dumb because he is an easier out to end the inning than Granderson.
I will not argue Clemens is capable of hitting someone but I do not think that was intentional. Clemens is smart enough to recognize the situation and I think the pitch just got away; unlike Rios last week who had it coming and I am sure was intentional on Rogers part; ie hit my best player and yours is getting nailed too. Can't fault a man for sticking up for his superstar player..
Also outside the HR there is no reason to hit him. He's a rookie in his second game and this was not a game wher players were getting plunked left and right and he was protecting his players. There's just no point in throwing at him given the score, situation, and other factors involved; such as Mabin's inexperience and that it was his second MLB game. Clemens will hit someone but it is generally in retaliation. That ball was supposed to be inside and just got away from him.
Even Rocket has some errant pitches! Everyone does. I wouldn't read too much into him hitting a rookie who represented the go ahead run at first with the tying run moving up to second; and the fact that Durbin was dealing at that point and holding a pretty solid offense down. Runs were at a premium in the sixth inning of a close game with Granderson on deck to tie or take the lead with a hit. Granted the Yanks blew it open after the fact but Clemens did not know that would happen at the time so I have to assume he is smart enough to not someone intentionally in a tight game to put the go ahead run on base. He might be kind of a jerk but the man is a smart baseball player.
My take make any sense? That is how I view that, I think people are looking for intent based on Clemens last game plunking Rios (in DIRECT response to Toronto targetting A-Rod two games in a row and BOTH were intentional) - pitchers HAVE to protect their players but we all know that.
I think that people are making a mountain out of a molehill given the facts. :)

08-19-2007, 02:48 AM
Well okay even if so not tonight, and yes I totally understand that if you hit our main guy, your's is getting hit back. But I've seen Clemens hit guys for doing nothing more than a homerun before, it's not a coincidence. In fact there's one in particular a couple years ago, one player hit two or three HR in one game, and Clemens hit him. And that's even worse. Oh, I can't get you out so I'm going to drill you. :rolleyes

How bad are the brewers playing right now? it really is unbelieveable that this team had the best record in the NL at one point. Baseball really is a horse race. As long as you stay within a furlong or so you ahve a chance..
Couple notes from reading:
1. If A-Rod opts out he will not be back with the yankees. THe rangers are paying the yankees 25 million to wash their hands of him and the yankees would not get that money if he opts out and while yes i know that they have infinite money they wont do it because of that reason.
My predictions for playoffs:
NL 1. NYM, CHC, AZD, COR
AL 1. BOS, CLE, LAA, DET
nothing too suprising

Jamie, I agree with just about everything you said except one, the Yankees were down 2-1 and two, by hitting Maybin, Clemens loaded the bases - which I think only further proves that it was unintentional. However, it should be noted that Granderson was 0 for 3 at that point while Maybin was 2 for 2.

the yanks were struggling because it was only a-rod who was hitting the ball. when 1 of your 9 players are hitting, you wont do shit. now, its 8 of 9 who are hitting the ball well, so of course you're going to win. i love how people try to find ways to trash a-rod. the guy is one of the best ball players in the game right now, if not the best, yet people look for ways to shit on him.
that said, its definitely between maggs and a-rod for mvp. a-rod needs to have a good 6 weeks between now and the end of the season to have a good shot at it.

props to al leiter here - right before the all star break when the yanks were a .500 team, leiter said that this series at the end of august would have the yankees 1 game back when it started...he may very well be right
I remember that. He laid out the whole month of July and August out. That would be amazing if he is right.

Funny stat I just found out about, but the Yankee fans probably already know. Garrett Anderson's 10 RBI game against the Yankees last night was the most RBIs since A-Rod did it against the Angels on April 26, 2005 (against Bartolo Colon during his Cy Young year, no less). In that April 26 game, A-Rod could have been the first player in major league history to hit for the home run cycle, which is hitting 1-run, 2-run, 3-run homers, and a grand slam in a single game. He had already hit 2-run and 3-run homers and a grand slam (9 RBIs by itself), but he just missed hitting a solo home run when he flied out to deep center in the 8th.

He was always a bit overrated, even in his prime. Never a high OBP guy, he walked little, which inflated his at-bat total, which gave him high hit counts. Playing on decent teams for a good bit of his prime, he often had many RBI opportunities as well.
Definitely solid in his prime, now he is very mediocre (last night excluded of course).

That's who Pit wanted for Jack FUCKING Wilson.
Also, noticed how Leyland took him out after 78 pitches, and the guy had given up a whopping one hit??? He did this to ensure Zoomy came into the game and pitch 1/3 of an inning. Fuck you Leyland, you're and idiot. I'd rather have Glenn Ballard manage this team.
ProudestAnt
08-22-2007, 02:43 PM
It's a reasonable move on Leyland's part. Jurrjens is a young kid. You leave him in too long and he could get rocked, which may ruin his confidence for the rest of the season. You should know that Detroit is in the playoff race and can use all the pitching it can get. Plus, the Zumaya move is smart as well. It's his first appearance back in what, 3 months? With Rodney and Jones being solid, why rush Zumaya back into a pressure situation? Bring him in with one on and two outs, let him get the one out and be done with it. Now that Leyland knows he has control of his gas, look for him to use Zumaya more.

This too shall pass.
Believe me the Met fans are out chirping like cicadas today. I was wondering where they all went.
Turns out most of them follow the Yankees closer than I do. Funny how none of them have said a word about their nice comeback last night.
what is there to say? Jake Peavy was dominant yet again...the phillies and braves both lost, so theres nothing to worry about. Still 5 games up and a steady 17 games over .500

I hope we at least get ourselves within a game of the Padres before we play them next Friday. We'd be lucky to take 2 of 3 from the Mets, and 2 of 3 from the Nats. Hopefully this team will surprise me. I'm giddy!

I mean they are playing good ball right now. Phillies are known to score A LOT of runs. We kept them to a few runs this series.

2 guys I'd take before him:
John Smoltz: 15-4 2.65 (207 IP)
Bob Gibson: 2-1 1.89 (81 IP)
Whitey Ford's numbers would look much better too with some run support. 10-8 2.71 (132 IP)
anyhow, game 7 World Series I want John Smoltz starting.

lol gibson has an era under 2 and is only 2-1.
still schilling numbers are better than 2 of those guys plus whitey played in a much more pitchers era.

Lcsulla
08-24-2007, 02:28 PM
Yeah, his WHIP and saves are great too but the record and ERA really jump out at you.
Yeah, Bernie was solid in most postseasons, though he did have a few series where he was in the toilet; 2000 WS comes to mind right away, he stunk! He holds a lot of postseason records but I am guessing Jeter will break all but doubles and Manny will probably end up hitting more HR's - but I doubt anyone touches his RBI record for quite some time. Still Bernie did indeed have a great postseason career.
Only postseason record I don;t see anyone ever breaking is Mantle's 18 WS HR's.

um.... how the hell is he in your list? hahah
but really, i am a padres fan and when they said wells was being released i was sad. he has thrown some really good games for us this year.
i remember one i went to where he threw 7 scoreless and when he went off he got a standing ovation. it was great.
true he gave up like a billion runs to the cardinals the game before he was cut. but honestly even at his current age Wells makes any pitching staff better.
WHY? becuase he knows how to make that ONE pitch to get out of an inning. and he does it. he is a big pitch pitcher, a big inning pitcher and big game pitcher and he rubs off.
personlly, i think he should be in the hall.
200 + wins

He is certainly one of the most effective pitchers ever in bug games.
Wells should not be in the hall, he was not elite. Only active pitchers that belong in the hall RIGHT NOW are Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, Smoltz, Martinez, Rivera, and Hoffman. Wells may get in if they dumb down the criteria a bit because guys get less starts but that opens the door for other borderline guys like Mussina and Schilling.
Wells biggest asset as a pitcher is that he walked virtually no one!
Also, he was hungover for his perfect game, not drunk.

This isn't threadworthy, but I wanted some opinions. I'm a Phils fan, but not a big fan of red caps. I like the Detroit Tigers caps, so I want to get one. However, I feel disloyal to my team. I'm not the type to care what others think when it comes to what I wear, but I don't want to come across as some sort of bandwagon jumper. So, basically, is ok to wear the hat of another team if you're wearing it purely out of the style, not necessarily the team?

Bullshit. Lucky for me I'm a Tigers fan so I get to wear the prettiest hat in baseball all the time, but you can't wear another teams hat. I couldn't even imagine it. I was a Tiger fan with Padres season tickets and I wore my Tigers hat to every game. You wear a Philly hat and you like it. If you don't like the red one, get a blue one.
