the thing is the orioles will be just like they were the last 5 years...crappy
tejada is as good as gone but if they build their team around pitching it looks like they could have something in the next few years.
they do have a beautiful ballpark though....

First, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on who you are, I learned last year that a lot that goes on in here is Yankees/Red Sox debate. Some of it is pretty tasteful, pointing over toward Ryan (ProudestAnt). Other times, it gets pretty rough in here.
In terms of the Tigers and their staff, we'll see. I don't think it's possible for them to be as dominant as they were last year, and then all of a sudden be awful a year later. Like I said earlier, I can see Kenny Rogers breaking down a bit. But the rest of them should be good to go. And they were damn good last year....
yea, I have noticed this too. Thats why I don't post much about baseball on here cause I couldnt care less about either of those teams and Ive come to find out that the majority of the people on this board feel the same way about the tigers.
On the matter of the Tigers staff, they are a legitimate staff and whatever happens, Im pretty confident they won't be awful. I agree about Kenny rogers. I mean he was stellar last season but you gotta think its just a matter of time before he cant compete on the same level anymore. That being said though, I as well as the whole city of Detroit from what I saw and heard at Tigerfest has never been this pumped up for the mlb season to start. On top of that, Leyland said, during a conference with the fans at Tigerfest as well, that he has never seen a team so pumped up about getting back out there. I heard the other day that even though the entire team was not required to show up to spring training until this comming teusday, 90% of the organization showed up to lakeland the same day that the pitchers and catchers had to be there. It sounds liek the boys are ready to go, it should be an interesting year

im not gonna try and read through this thread, but in today in the usa today there's an article about how this season the players' hats are going to be made out of a different material. looks like they aren't wool anymore. also the underside of the bill is going to be black now instead of grey, so it can fend off the glare of the sun better.

New York Yankees
Summary: The division keeps getting better, but the Yanks keep finding a way to win. 9 straight makes it very difficult to bet against them this year. They limited their spending this year by shying away from Ted Lilly when he asked for $40 mil and backing off Gil Meche, Vicente Padilla and Jason Schmidt when their pricetags went up. They're not frugal, as their payroll is still significantly the highest in the bigs, but Cashman as apparently found some restraint. He wants to build the farm system. Their lineup? Easily one of the best in the past 40 years and possibly one of the best in history. There's no break in the lineup. With Jeter hitting between Damon and Abreu, he'll be another MVP candidate this year. A-Rod may have issues in the playoffs, but he doesn't have problems getting there. He still produces runs and I'd still take him on my team. Cano is the real deal and he started showing that last season, expect more of the same this season. Barring injury, they'll have the best lineup in the game this year. However, the same cannot be said for their pitching. They'll score runs, but the question is can they keep the opponents from scoring runs? Everyone in their lineup has question marks. Will Mussina's years of arm problems finally catch up to him? What's up with Pettite's elbow? You know, the one that had him considering retirement before his mid-30s. Igawa was slated as a reliever by most scouts, so can he handle the load of a starter? Does Pavano even want to be in pinstripes? Wang is the best bet to succeed, but the question is can he repeat what he did last year? The bullpen has the same questions, but the most glaring one is Rivera, who showed signs of wear last year. He's 37 and, if he's in decline, there are major problems in the Bronx. I don't believe for a second that Rivera is done as a closer, but one can't deny the decline he showed last season.
Prediction: Tough to bet against them, but if the questions in their rotation and bullpen aren't answered, it's difficult to believe they can win the division.
You may not know his name, but you will (Impact Rookie): Phil Hughes (duh), RHP (6-5, 220) - This kid's the real deal. Last season he was 12-6 with a 2.16 ERA, a 4.9 K/BB ratio, 10.4 Ks per game and a .179 opponents' average between AA and A ball. He's got an overpowering fastball, which he can throw with two and four seams. He has a hole in his offspeed delivery when he alters his three-quarters slot for his curveball and slider, which can tip off great hitters like Man-Ram, Miggy, and the like, but that can be worked on.
Down on the Farm (Top Prospects):
1. Phil Hughes, RHP: Big league frame and great arm action should prevent concerns about injury problems, but he'll need to pitch more innings (limited to 80 pitches per start last season)
2. Humberto Sanchez, RHP: Two solid breaking pitches, excellent arm strength and command (2.7 K/BB) and rings up Ks (9.4 Ks per game). 10-6 with a 2.63 ERA last season between AAA and AA.
3. Jose Tabata, OF: Great power and speed prospect with an aggressive hitting approach. Only had 319 ABs last season, but still hit .298.
4. Joba Chamberlain, RHP: Dominated the Hawaiian Fall League with a great slider and solid head (96 mph). Suffered knee and elbow injuries in college, but he seems to be over them now.
5. Christian Garcia, RHP: Excellent movement and pinpoint command (3.8 K/BB). Missed a lot of time last season with a strained oblique, but still had a 3.46 ERA in 41 innings.
6. Dellin Betances, RHP: First-round talent who slid because scouts thought he'd be tough to sign. 6-9 makes him very imposing on the mound. 1.16 ERA in 23 innings of rookie ball.
7. Kei Igawa, LHP: Slated to open the season in the starting rotation. He's got a great changeup, fastball movement and command (4.0 K/BB). 14-9 with a 2.97 ERA in Japanese ball last season.
8. Ian Kennedy, RHP: Four pitches and excellent command could allow him to reach AA ball in his first professional season.
9. Tyler Clippard, RHP: Keeps winning despite pedestrian stuff. 12-10 with a 3.35 ERA in AA ball. He succeeds through his impressive command (3.2 K/BB) and repeatable delivery.
10. JB Cox, RHP: Fantastic groundball pitcher who is tough on right-handed batters. 1.75 ERA and held hitters to a .196 BA in short relief in AA ball.

I put Tabata 3rd because he's young. And I put Kennedy over Clippard because he's young with 4 pitches and Clippard doesn't have anything special in his arsenal. If Hughes dropped the slider, it means he's returning to his normal arm slot which favors the curveball, but makes it difficult for him to get under his slider...

he is young but you also have dellin in there. Clippard has amazing command, arguably better than hughes.
coming outta of high school, the yankee rule is no sliders. so they dropped the slider and made hughes work on his curve. after a few years, hughes became so comfortable with the curve that they just decided 1 breaking ball was enough.

I disagree with your the idea that Rivera suffered a decline last year. Yes, he had an injury that worried the Yankees, but he still pitched in 63 games last year, down only eight from 2005.
Rivera compiled a 1.80 ERA, 55/11/3 K/BB/HR ratio. He was 5-5, but he has only 3 blown saves, 15 ER in 75 IP. To me, I really don't see a decline. What, he accumulated 3 blown saves instead of 1? or 2? Rivera's only question is age, when age is always a question for a 37 year old pitcher. Also considering he is in fact the greatest closer of all time, at 37, it is easier now to ask "when" instead of "if". As far as I'm concerned, despite an injury the Yankees were overly cautious with, I have no reason to believe his performance will slip that dramatically, if at all.
I enjoyed your review. It has energized me and excited me to cover these guys in the spring.

You can keep it simple - ALCS, NLCS, World Series.
EDIT: Also - Me and a few buddies are starting our baseball road trip this summer. Since getting to all of the stadiums in one summer is impossible, we're going to break it out into mini-trips. This summer we're seeing Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Then that is my only gripe about that review, otherwise I thought it was well written. If Igawa is a prospect because it is his first year in the bigs, then Dice-K should have been on the red sox prospect list for it is his first year in the bigs and no one knows what he can do in the majors. ;)

ok, but seriously, i watch a lot of AAA baseball because the Oakland A's AAA is The Sacramento Rivercats, and so yeah, i know the dodgers have a pretty good farm system, but prospects don't always pan out don't-ya-know. the reaon they're called prospects, in fact, is that they have yet to be tested in The Show and have the backing of a few scouts as being major league material; and lot's of prospects do not a world series title make. sure that probably bodes well for them in the future, assuming the GM doesn't blow it and they can avoid catastrophic injuries and whatnot. but as it relates to this season, how many of Baseball America's top prospects are in the dodgers farm system is unlikely to have a major impact (unless they make a big trade before the deadline with some of those prospects, which still may not help them win). i'm not saying that the dodgers are crap this year, that would be retarded and delusional . . but i don't think they're one of the best teams in baseball either . . but whatever, obviously there's going to be a aggree-to-disaggree situation here, and the only real solution is to wait and see who's right. we'll see, we'll see.:cool

When they were bedroom buddies ...
By DJ Gallo
Page 2
"The reality is there's been a change in the relationship of 14 years and, hopefully, we can just put it behind us. You go from sleeping over at somebody's house five days a week, and now you don't sleep over. It's just not that big of a deal."
-- Alex Rodriguez, commenting on how his friendship with Derek Jeter has cooled over the years
Ah … sleepovers. Those were the days. Watching scary movies, roasting marshmallows, playing video games all night long.
Oh, to be 12 years old again. Or -- oh, to be a famous professional athlete, because apparently Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter had sleepovers together well into adulthood.
But what were those sleepovers like? What do the two biggest stars in baseball do together during a slumber party? Here's a brief look at the sleepover history between Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter:
1994: Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have their first sleepover together while still in their late teens. The duo stays up all night telling each other scary stories about spending their careers on small-market teams with low payrolls.
1995: During yet another sleepover, A-Rod and Jeter get bored and play dress-up in Jeter's mother's clothing, jewelry and makeup. It is then that Jeter falls in love with fragrances and decides he will one day release a scent of his own, while Rodriguez secretly steals all of Mrs. Jeter's purple lipstick.
1996: A-Rod and Jeter get in a good-natured pillow fight during a sleepover at Rodriguez's Seattle apartment. They stop midway through and decide to never pillow-fight again because it really messes up their hair.
1997: Jeter invites A-Rod over to his apartment for an offseason sleepover. After a few hours they decide to show each other tricks that they can do. Rodriguez impresses Jeter with a card trick and a short juggling routine, while Jeter blows his friend's mine by displaying all of his intangibles.
1998: During a cold, winter night in New York, Jeter and A-Rod rent scary movies to watch at Jeter's apartment and then pop some popcorn and stretch out in their sleeping bags on the living room floor. Midway through the first movie they decide it would be OK to watch from the same sleeping bag for extra warmth and security.
1999: Rodriguez invites Jeter over for a New Year's Eve sleepover. Worried the world could end due to Y2K, the duo decides to get their tips frosted so if they die, they die looking as handsome as possible.
2000: Rodriguez has Jeter over for a sleepover to celebrate his 10-year, $252 million contract. The two roast marshmallows over burning $1, $5, $10, $20 and $50 bills A-Rod says he no longer has any use for.
2001: Up to no good during a sleepover at A-Rod's place in Texas, the pair prank-calls fellow superstar shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and asks him if his refrigerator is running. Garciaparra says it is, and then a giggling Jeter and A-Rod tell him he should go catch it -- upon which Garciaparra tears his hamstring.
2002: Angered that Rodriguez spoke somewhat poorly of him in an Esquire article, Jeter invites Rodriguez over to his apartment for a sleepover, but purposely doesn't stock his fridge with A-Rod's beloved Zima.
2003: A further rift develops in the relationship when Jeter has a sleepover and doesn't include Rodriguez, but instead plays host at his Manhattan apartment all night long to a dozen Sports Illustrated swimsuit models.
2004: In A-Rod's first season in New York, he invites Jeter over to a sleepover with several of his high-stakes, underground poker buddies. Rodriguez then loses Jeter in a game of Texas hold 'em. He is able to win him back, however, by promising to throw every playoff series he ever plays in for the rest of his career.
2005: The relationship between the two becomes even more fractured during a sleepover game of Truth Or Dare. Jeter dares Rodriguez to drive in a meaningful run once in his Yankees career, prompting Rodriguez to ask Jeter to admit the truth that no one would have ever heard of him had he played his career in a city like Kansas City or Milwaukee instead of New York.
2006: Following the Yankees' shocking playoff elimination at the hands of the Detroit Tigers, A-Rod sleeps over at Derek Jeter's apartment for the last time. (Technically, this sleepover was not at Jeter's apartment but outside of it, as Rodriguez fell asleep on Jeter's doorstep after crying and wailing for several hours about how he was "so sorry" about hitting 1-for-14 and asking Jeter to "please let me in and tell me you'll still be my friend.")

The Dodgers are definitely the hot pick right now.
dont worry they will choke... i mean how they hell did they loose a 4 game lead with like 2 weeks to go while winning their last 7?
thats right cuz teh padres owned them.
anyway heres a breakdown.
offensivly
1B Garciapara/Gonzalez - Garciapara, but this could change easily during the year
2B Kent/Giles - Ill go with kent, but he is old injuries can kill
SS Furcal/Greene - its all about health, they stay healthy greene wins easy
3B Betemit/Kuozmanoff - i have no idea who either of these guys are, tie
C Martin/Bard - Bard
LF Gonzalez/Sledge - Gonzalez, but Sledge is fully healthy and there is a reason frank robinson is high on him.
CF Pierre/Cameron - Cameron
RF Etheir/Giles - Giles, but like sledge etheir could establish himself, he has a lot of upside
so the score in that area padres 4-3 with a tie at 3rd, which it may come down to.
defense
1B - Gonzalez - watch him play, you will see
2B - Kent
SS - Greene
3B - N/A
LF - Sledge, more range, faster, better arm gonzalez is too old
CF - Cameron - he didnt win the gold glove last year on a random drawing
RF - Giles
C - Martin - bard isnt really that great.
score padres 5-2 with tie at 3rd
Rotation
1 Peavy/Schmidt - Peavy
2 Young/Lowe - Young
3 Maddux/Penny - Penny
4 Hensly/Wolf - Hensly
5 Wells/Billingsly - Wells
4-1 padres
Pen (ill take best 3)
closer: Hoffman/Saito - Hoffman
Setup: Linebrink/Brazoban - Linebrink
Setup: Meridith/Tsao - Meridith
padres 3-0
score padres 16-6
padres are relativly young, with some key veterans. a lot of these guys are entering or are in their best years (greene, gonzalez, m giles, cameron, peavy, young, hensly, linebrink, meridith)
while i see the dodgers as being pretty old, their rotation is a bunch of veterans, but they just dont have what they used to. injuries could plague them again.
yes im bias, but damn, look at statistics and age.

the greene thing is a prediction. i think he will finally be healthy and have a good year.
he is a slow starter yes, but the last 3 years when he gets hot he got injured.
not to mention his defense. wowza.

Furcal chomps on greene's injury prone ass. Furcal is a much better SS. Koz is a great hitter at 3rd for the padres but betemit played nicely for the dodgers after being traded for. Billingsly>>>Wells. Billingsly was a top pitching prospect who is panning out just like LA planned. and Broxton is the 8th inning guy...

The Dodgers are better than the Padres IMO...The Padres have good pitching, but they don't have ways to score runs.

Just some questions to perk interest and involvement in the thread:
Who lands Texeira 2 years from now? Obviously with Young getting an $80 mil deal, Tex won't be back in town when his contract is up, especially with prices going the way they are.
Where does Schilling wind up next season?
Who wins the AL West this year? Why?
Who wins the NL West this year? Why?
Where does Ichiro wind up next year?
What will be the blockbuster trade this season?
Where will Mariano Rivera wind up next year?
Who will be the Boston closer this season?
Finally, if Bonds continues to draw attention to himself and continue to be a negative player and DOESN'T break the HR record this season, who signs him next year, if anyone, and how much will he sign for?

You can start looking now and have an idea of where he'll go. He plays 1B. Who will need a 1B? You can look at teams with young, solid players at 1B, and then you can look at teams that will be able to afford a player like Tex. I see the Braves being a big player for him, as well as the Yanks...

i'm a ranger fan and as much as it blows we will be saying bye to Tex. I think he'll jump somewhere big because he's gonna have a huge next 2 years. I can see the Rangers trying to trade him next year though or he could be a deadline deal next year but for now we'll take his production for this year.
Schilling will go to the Cards
AL West is Angels with the Rangers right behind
NL West is Padres with Dodgers right behind
Ichiro is going to the Angels
Blockbuster trade next season will be Tiexiera...to Chicago for John Danks and another prospect.
Mariano Rivera will go to the Mets
Pinerio gets the job at first but eventually Papelbon leaves the rotation to go back to closing....unless they trade a prospect or a big right handed bat to Texas for Akinori Otsuka.
he'll be in SF til the day he retires

as far as Gary Matthews Jr...i really hope it's untrue because baseball is where I go to get away from sports bullcrap and it keeps coming in on some players that I have cared about. Rafael Palmeiro was my favorite player growing up. I"m not gonna accuse Gary until i see more evidence because I think these days all you have to do is report somebody's name and they look guilty. But it does look really fishy considering his miracle turn around season.

Anyways, since we're playing prediction, the Dodgers are taking the NL West. I believe the leadoff tandem of Pierre/Furcal will be as effective as it looks on paper. Our rotation isn't that bad either. Lowe/Schmidt/Penny/Wolf/(Kuo/Billingsley/Stults/whoever). I say we have the most legit shot at going somewhere from that division. Padres...eh. I guess so. Maybe.

Sounds legitimate to me. "After this season" is the key phrase in this. Tex isn't a free agent until after NEXT season. So you think your "spend-crazy" owner will just sit on his hands until Tex is a free agent? Or do you think he'll actually go out and make some moves to try and pick up a 1B this year? Again, you think the Tigers have a shot at everything. Instead of analyzing situations, you just have a "homer" attitude and HOPE instead of think, then just switch the words. Do the Tigers have a legit shot at Tex? No. You HOPE they do, but they don't. I don't care what you say about your owner, a talent like Tex will not escape the grips of Georgie boy...

You know, your elitist attitude gets old real quick. Still bitter that Red Sox didn't make the playoffs last year? We're talking about the same "spend-crazy" owner who spent big bucks on the Red Wings for years, and would have continued to do so had a salary cap not been implemented. He's been quoted numerous times as saying he wants the Tigers to win more than anything.
And who's to say the Tigers don't sign Casey to another one year deal after this one and go hard after Texieira next year? I wouldn't say the Tigers have a shot at him if we had a first baseman locked up for the next five years. It's not like we have a hot shot prospect at first waiting in the wings.
I wasn't looking to start an argument with my statement.

The thing that gets forgotten about Clemens is when he pitched for the Yanks, he wasn't dominating IMO.
The NL Central is a lot easier to pitch in than the AL East...If he joins the Sox or Yanks, his ERA will rise at least an entire run IMO.
And I hate to be completely negative, but it bugs me that Clemens can do whatever the hell he wants and everyone still loves him...No one remembers his little tirades agaisnt Piazza? He was completely to blame in those, but no one cares. And I'm not convinced he didn't do steroids. But since his name isn't Barry Bonds, no one really cares, and Clemens is alowed to demand 5 million a month to play half a season..

And Mark Prior is sent to AAA.
Such a shame that he got injured, he was gonna be a great one.

Carl Pavano Opening Day starter? Is this true?
For my fellow Tiger fans: Kenny Rogers to start the season on DL due to fatigued arm.

It's going to be either Pavano or one of the rookies. Wang is on the DL to open the season and Moose is just starting to throw again, so he won't be ready...

I don't what's supposed to mean. Moose sticks to a very tight schedule when it comes to his pitching which Torre adheres too. There is nothing structurally wrong with Mussina.

So I'm excited that this is finally the Brewers year and having season tickets for the past 8 seasons will finally pay off.

No, we are picked by many national sports "people" to either win the Central or win the Wild Card.
Let's go Brew Crew!

Let's go Brew Crew! Well the Wild Card is coming out of the West, not to a team that will barely finish .500, so don't count on that. You'd better win your division and that will be very tough to do with the Cards...

Outside of Poo-holes we've got the Cards covered. They are old and have no pitching after Carp.
The Cubs should take care of themselves.
The Astros lost Pettitte and Clemens.
Reds and Pirates are still a few years away.
The West may be too competitive for the WC to come out of there. The Division winner may well win 90 games but 2nd place could be something like 86-87 wins, and two teams in the Central could win 88-87 games because overall the Central isnt as strong.

Hm, I wouldn't be so sure that it couldn't come out of the East. You know all those NL West teams will be fighting to get to 85 wins as it is.

Yeah, it wasn't but two years ago that the winner of the West had like 82 or 83 wins (The Padres). The entire NL is so watered-down that the wild card could come out of any division really.

It always can come out of any division. This isn't the AL East huzzah that lasted however long before last year.

Really, the "huzzah" was only 3 years. The Red Sox didn't reach the playoffs in 2000, 2001 or 2002 nor from '96 to '98.

Really? Lol. I never really cared about or paid attention to the AL outside the White Sox until 2003. :lol

i just really don't think the indians will win that division...or the wildcard. i mean sure they are good but so is just about everybody in the AL. Marte and Barfield are still very very young. And you can't count on Sabathia to be healthy. I'll believe it when i see it.

the rangers are a .500 team in the AL...so don't tell me they would be sub 500 in the NL. Much better than the D'backs, Rockies, and Giants.

he was hitting .404...as much as i'm against cheating and everything sammy has done negatively for baseball....being a ranger fan i hope he hits 25 homeruns and knocks in 85 RBI's.
it's kind of sketchy though...he looks like chicago sammy and not baltimore sammy....physically and mentally.

And who knows, maybe Kenny Lofton will give them a hand too.(Despite being 41, he's still one of the fastest mofos in the MLB.)
