I dont write on here much, but i read this today in the indianapolis star. I know quite a few people here are from Indiana, and just thought you should know that their may not be a stop here this summer.

I'd say it might as well be a done deal. Simon wants the land out there to build a new Mall. Just what the north side needs........

I can only hope that it doesn't happen till late in the summer, but I don't think that's going to happen.

No kidding! I wondered about that. Guess it will be hard to top their price if someone really wants to buy it and keep it as a concert venue. Even if they build another outdoor venue closer to Indy (where???) it would not be the same. If they do have a final show there before it's decommissioned, it will be insane!!!

Let's blow up old Bush Stadium and start having conerts in Haughville (super ghetto for those that don't know).
More seriously, they should probably re-work the Lawn @ White River. We just need to add about 20,000 more seats. The venue is sweet for smaller acts.

If it does happen this way. This is the way I would like to see the concert season come to an end.
Sandy Patty (The 1st concert at Deer Creek)
Steve Miller Band (The only artist to play the venue every year while the name was Deer Creek)
Farmaid
2 Nights Tom Petty
2 Nights Kenny Chesney
2 Nights Jimmy Buffett
3 Nights DMB (Fri-Sat-Sun)
This is just the final run that I would like to see.

We are still planning for 2007 until we hear different. It was a shock this morning. We knew this was going to happen sooner or later. We never thought it was going to happen this soon.
There are several possibilities out there.
My personal hope is that we get one last concert season. As bad as I dont want it to end I want it to end during the summer with the thousands of people that work there and the thousands of people that enjoy concerts at Deer Creek.

I had a feeling this would happen eventually, just not so soon. It would be awesome if a group of artists who enjoy playing there got together and bought the place.
It will be sad if 2006 is the last season as I missed DMB there this year. I proposed to my wife out on that lawn at the first DMB show we attended.

Yeah, I was there for that Ben Harper show, it was bad ass. But I think the Lawn could pull it off, they would just have to put the stage out over the water or something. This just makes me feel sick.

I emailed a friend about it - she moved from Indy to Atlanta this year. I think she put it very well... "Hopefully, another concert venue will buy the place up. It will be such a bore to have a bunch of cookie-cutter suburban houses on the stage where dave should rightly dance!"
I'd change the word "bore" to "travesty" but otherwise, I concur!

Man, that sucks.
I've seen at least 30 concerts at Deer Creek, DMB there about 10 times.
Deer Creek has always been one of the best stops for the Grateful Dead (except for that time that a religeous fanatic wanted to kill Jerry), Phish (wow, the camping is an experience), and DMB.
In fact, this year I think the best DMB 2 night run was definitely at Deer Creek.
I hope they don't demolish it, there isn't another good large outdoor venue in the whole state. The Lawn at White River is sweet, but it is lacking about 20,000 seats and a pavillion.
If they do have two last DMB shows there this summer I will be there and it will be the biggest damn party you've ever seen.

Is there any venue in Indianapolis for DMB to play if they can't get into Deer Creek this summer? I suppose fans in Indy will have to settle for an indoor arena show at Conseco Fieldhouse if the worst happens. And I do mean THE WORST cause that place sucks for a concert compared to Deer Creek. DMB can't skip Indiana, they have a huge fan base there.
Allie35
12-18-2006, 05:43 PM
Wouldn't contracts or dates for shows at some of the summer venues already be set? I would think we would still have '07 summer shows because real estate deals involving this large of an area will not be a quick deal. It will probably be up to a year before a deal is closed or finished? Don't you think?

Yes, some shows have alread been set, but if it sells, the I guess the shows get refunded.
I'm sure we'll most of the summer in before anything big happens. Like you said, large real estate deals like this can take some time.

There are dates set already for the 2007 season.
However if it sells quickly and the legal crap goes quick then we would have no concerts in 2007.
We are all hoping for one last summer. It sucks either way. But for someone that works there we want to spend the last summer and the last concert together.
If I had enough money I would buy it myself. Cut beer prices and make the tickets less expensive.
No deer Creek means no DMB in Indiana. I would rather go to Riverbend to see Dmb than Conseco Fieldhouse.

I know there's a lot of new development going on in the area, but is anything actually open yet? There's the new fancy road that leads from Deer Creek to the I-69 exit, and a couple of office parks underway. But the whole thing could be a bust like the rest of the empty office parks in/around Indy.

UWMike
12-18-2006, 10:47 PM
Now granted Live Nation doesn't own much land in this area except for the venue, but doesn't it seem like such a waste to demolish a great music venue in a area where there is so much open land?
Ticket sales have been down the last few years. Anyone think this could be a trend for Live Nation to cash in on their venues that sit on prime real estate. Less venues could make for higher demand at the venues that survive.
If this does happen, the ticket demand will be even higher than ridiculous for Wrigley and Alpine.

Youd be suprised, there arent that many HARDCORE fans that go to just the Creek, so most of those are spill overs for Alpine too, and then the rest are silly teens who are not going to drive up to Alpine for a weekend, there parents wouldnt let them. Id say a slightly higher ticket demand, but not too much, at least i hope.

I am hoping to get to go to the 2nd night this year.
I will be attending Alpine.
I pray that this company that I work for will not sell Alpine or Germain.
There is some talk (rumors) that a buisines man from Indy is looking at buying the creek. But, he is also looking at building a new venue near Indy.
If the creek is demolished I have a sneaky suspison that we will get a new venue withing five years.
But, I hope they are asking too much right now.
Those of us that work at the venue knew this was going to happen sooner or later with the new development around the venue. We anticipated this to happen in 3-5 years. The shock that it happned this soon is still present. We found out the same time that the public found out. We received a call from the husband of one of our employees.
Face it the music industry is changing. Big venues like: Deer Creek, Alpine, Germain are on the way out. The talent is not there to fill these venues anymore. We have DMB, Buffet, Kenny Chesney, Tom Petty that can sell out. Other than that ticket slaes are down. Yes you can say that ticket prices are to high. We are in a catch 22. We want the hottest acts to come to our building each summer. They ask for a lot of money and we pay them. Then we turn around and charge higher ticket prices for the consumer. But, it goes back to Livenation. We are a custmer service industry. Things are all screwed up.
But, going back to my oringinal point: Talent. There is not young talent out there to fill venues the size of Deer Creek. The upcoming talent is coming to the Lawn or the Egyptian Room. If there is another outdoor venue built around Indy, I would not expect it to be as big as Deer Creek. Is it a shame? Yes. Is it practical? Yes.
The past two days have been rough at the creek. A lot of unanswered questions.
But, let me be the 1st to tell you this. The staff at Deer Creek wants to go out with a bang. We are commited to have the best year that we have ever had at Deer Creek.
I hope that you take this and look at it on both sides.
For fans it sucks.
For business it makes sense.
For us that work there it makes no sense and it sucks.
Hopefully the small group that works year round will be able to find something else in the business.
We work for Livenation and we have to resemble Livenation because they sign our pay checks. First and foremost we are fans. We love live music and we love being apart of thousands of fans having a great experience.
I will be looking for something in the business if Deer Creek is sold and demolished. I have worked there for 7 years. This will be my 8th.
I had to get this off my chest to those who come to the best venue in the country!
I hope that each one of you and your families have a great Holiday Season.
I will be around and will post my annual Deer Creek thread with answers to all the questions that you may have as we get closer to summer.
Cheers,
--Kyle

If this venue is so great for DMB, I feel I should experience it before it is demolished. But what makes it so great compared to Germain?? Have you happened to catch the Eddie/Laird Iconoclasts? That show was incredible.

Is there a website for deer creek anymore since the old one changed to that venue in alabama? I can't seem to find anything. I didn't know Alabaman's even went to concerts! South Park taught me that they just bowl, drink beer and slap their bitches!

Thanks for the info Kyle, that's been frustrating for me lately. And I agree, Go Colts! They have me in a position to make a lot of money after coming through for me last night! I'll have my Manning jersey on cheering them on!
