:confused Aside from the million dollar acoustic sound pickup that Dave uses, how is it that a Taylor 914ce or 914c, with D'Addario .11 sounds so good? I cannot duplicate the sound even though I have the Taylor and the exact strings...could it be soo much of the amplifier and reverb and acoustics that Dave has on his guitar, please someone of an enlightened nature please fill me in...BTW...what ever happened to ROB holy cow, i spent almost a year in seclution cause of that mother f**ker...just cause i was a newbie and didn't know 1 from the 6th string and how to play ANYTHING....anyway thats a different thread and for the verdict...I got 27 songs down packed. Cause Rob pissed me off way to much and made me want to get better...but anyway...someone help me about Dave reverbs or acoustic plugin pickups, I know he uses fishman acoustic matrix natural...i think... but anyway I'd like to know someway to get my sound to mimic Dave's...I got the guitar and strings...lol...now what.... is it my tuning or my amp setttings...help me out...

His pickup isn't all that expensive. It's a Fishman Matrix UST worth about $100. He also uses an eventide ultraharmonizer to enhance his sound. I have a Cocobolo 914c LTD and love Dave's sound but am not looking to reproduce it. I bought a 200Watt Genz Benz Pro true acoustic amp and will be installing a SBT pickup this weekend in order to get a true acoustic sound as if the guitar isn't even plugged in.

If you are playing a Taylor 210 with a soundhole pickup into an electric amp or cheap acoustic amp, you can't wonder why you aren't getting a great tone just due to your strings.

he strums different than most acoustic players, that could be one problem. the other problem is, why do you want to sound exactly like dave?

SBT? prepare for feedback and a tiny sound

SBT? prepare for feedback and a tiny sound

Not with the K&K. Only feedback in high volume situations. I'm just using it for solo acoustic or fingerstyle with my 2 channel amp and a feedback buster in the hole. It's the most silent and acoustically true pickup around right now.

im just saying i've been fooled with SBTs. i used mine solo acoustic and even at low volumes i needed a feedback buster

That's cool thanks for the warning. I've done months of research/asking of users opinions before deciding on the K&K pure western mini. Did you use the "non-mini" K&K? B-band? Baggs? Just curious to know where you were getting all your feedback from.

So let me get this right, you bought a 914ce to learn on?

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a 914, but wants to get his Taylor to sound like Daves 914. Dave's or not, there's a reason a 914 is at the top of the Taylor lineup, they don't all just sound like it because they are a Taylor. I have a 314 that can't hold a candle to my 914 or to my old 810. (didn't tell us what kind of Taylor it was that he had).

Especially with a 914ce, everyone knows that to get the true Dave sound, you gotta pick up one of those fancy Gibson Chet Atkins SST's.

DUH!

You need to get a set-up fairly similar to what Dave uses in order to get "his" sound. Everything makes a difference, from string type, to various electronics, to the specific type of plectrum he employs. Being able to play with the same style as Dave will get you even closer to "his" sound. That being said, just having a similar guitar and strings will not get you close to the sound you're seeking. The electronics and amplification he uses are just as an essential part of the equation. Do yourself a favor and hear the beautiful sound coming from your guitar and get away from the fact that it doesn't sound like Dave Matthews playing.

He said he had 'the' Taylor, so I would assume he knew 914c?

didn't use a k&k i used b-band (based in europe). then i realized sbt's werent for me since i was at a mid-high level volume 5 months later. so i removed that and threw in a martin thinline gold plus. been happy since :lol

I do currently now have the 2001 taylor 914ce with the cindy inlay, with d'addario .10 esp nanoweb coated string, I can play just about any Dave song, with the exception of his extremely new stuff. My intention was for this to purely be for conversation. Im not trying to duplicate Dave's sound, it would be for pure my own satisfaction, not to go out and impress people, and to play around in my basement with.
I WOULD NOT like to mimic Dave onstage, I would like to carry my own sound and my own style up on stage...sorry for the confusion, AGAIN this was intended to be a conversation starter and information gathering question.
