So over the past year I came up with a couple of riffs/ideas that sounded somewhat mexican, for lack of a better word. One of my musician friends was fairly impressed when I played them for him and he urged me to develop them into actual songs. So I did. I taught him the guitar parts (so consqeuently they're not played exactly as I would have intended, but they get the point across), I arranged some bass parts and played those, and we got together with our drummer friend this past summer to work these songs out. We stuck a mic in the middle of the room just to get them on tape, and the result was better than I had expected. None of them have vocals recorded, although my friend did write lyrics for most of them. Posted below are the two that I wrote on my own that sparked the idea, any thoughts and criticisms are welcome, just nothing too negative please :).

Baja - This one has a few mistakes and the levels aren't great, but it's representative of the basic idea.

Road to Loreto - This is my favorite take of my favorite song. Enjoy!

I listened to Road To Lereto, not bad. Very chillin..drivin on the highway kind of song. :thumbsup

I gotta mention Volta my friend, I'm one of the few here that recognizes the Cerpin Taxt...:cool Which leads to my question, is Mars Volta your #1 band? I just ask because your screen name is for them, and then you said that the stuff you made up sounded like mexican music. All jokes aside here, I'm being serious.

Actually, Mars Volta & Wolfmother are my favorite bands and I've found myself making up more and more classical guitar picked riffs. I just recorded Concertina & The Widow last night..:thumbsup

The Volta are definitely a top 5 for me. They kind of lost me right around when they released Scab Dates, but Tremulant, De-Loused, and Francis all get regular play. I listened to Amputechture once through and wasn't really a fan. It had its moments, but was a little too out there to suit my tastes. I do recall hearing an acoustic track on it that reminded me a bit of what I'm trying to do with these songs and the others we put together.

Although I might not credit Omar as a guitar influence, I definitely look up to his skill at arranging and creating depth. If I ever had the opportunity to record these tracks in a studio and really take my time with them, I would most definitely do a lot of what he does with layering and texture.

And as always, it's nice to meet a fellow Volta fan on here. :thumbsup Right on, brother.

Ya know how you said they lost ya after releasing Scab Dates...funny cause actually I just started listening to them a couple months ago and the CD I chose for my 1st album was Scab Dates. So was it recorded in a studio, or is it live, but just edited a LOT? Fill me in on how many albums they've released, and are all there songs titled one name with multiple parts or what? I ask because Scab Dates has 4 track titles with at least 8-10 songs on the CD. Lastly, in your opinion what is the "BTCS" solid album of Mars Volta? Thanks for enlightening me in advance. ;)

On a side note the lead singers voice is gold. Him and Jack White are the only two musicians that sound similar to Robert Plant. A league of their own to say the least...:thumbsup
