what's a good, easy rock solo to start learning with?
i play mainly chords, but i recently bought a line6 spider2 amp, and want to start playing some solo stuff on it.
i could play smells like teen spirit, but that's about it. currently trying to learn the intro solo to fade to black (metallica)- it goes without say that it's hard as friggin hell.
suggestions welcome. thanks.

Start learning your scales, and then you can jam in any key.

yeah... it's probably more beneficial if you learn how to solo yourself instead of just copy someone else's solo, although transcribing and playing by ear is also a good developmental technique. Work on scales and finger patterns.

paterns are amazing, because then you can kind of box yourself into a whole bunch of paterns that fit together. but find a lot of paterns so that you can mix your solos up. then just move the paterns up or down depending on the key. it's like a puzzle that can be put together any way you like.
But also remember that running up and down scales is boring. Hear what you're going to do in your head before you actually play it. Pay very close attention to rhythm.

one of my favorite rock solos to play (that is easy) is Zach Wylde's solo from Mama I'm Coming Home

i do play scales. i know the different pentatonic and blues scales, as well as chromatic, etc.
but like someone mentioned... they're boring. i want to learn a song to add some flavor.

If you truely do know the scales well, why are you looking for an easy rock solo? You should be up to intermediate solos by now...

A good idea when learning to solo is to sit down and think about what notes from the scale are used and where the soloist uses them. Figure out how to apply what you know.

Breakdown by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers contains several simple but groovy licks to fuck around with.

Yeah scales are essential, but I find them to be boring and need to play some Metallica every now and again. Fade to Black isn't too bad except when it jumps up above the 12th fret. If you're into Metallica try Hero of the Day, Until it Sleeps, fool around with Orion. Other rock solos I played when I was learning was a lot of Nirvana (Come as You are, Smells Like Teen Spirit). You could learn the intro to Sweet Child of Mine, that's not too tough.
