The other day when I was playing I stood up from my kit with my foot still on the hi hat pedal and my weight accidentally forced the pedal down to the floor. The cymbals still open and close but since the pedal goes down to the ground instead of stopping the hi hat can't tighten. I'm hoping there is an easy way to fix this but I need to know the source of the problem. Thanks

Did you untighten the screw that holds the top hi hat to the rod?

loosen and re tighten the hi hat clutch and you should be fine.

this tragic event that the OP talks of has happened to me many times...and this is the solution to the problem 100% of those times.
just screw the top rod back in! as dirty as it sounds!
