My friend and i got the chance to play a few songs at a local cafe last night. There was only about 40-50 people but it was cool and damn was i nervous. We only played two songs, the first one was "the key" which my friend wrote, and the second was "warehouse". We both play acoustic, my friend pat is does the vocals and i play some rythem/ fills/ improv. stuff like that. It was definatly fun but we were so nervous we didnt want to play any songs that we might have a chnace of messing up. Only thing that went wrong was Pat forgot to do the passion iintro to warehouse and we just went right to the stop time even though we had said we were going to play the passion.:eek All in all it was fun though.

^ just gotta keep doing it. Mistakes will always happen, you can count on that. Its really how you deal with them, you can bet most of the listeners either didnt notice or forgot quickly about the mistake and enjoyed the rest of the song.

People should never cover Dave Matthews songs. For some reason it looks so pathetic when someone does one. Everyone sounds like a queer when they sing them too, only Dave's voice can pull his songs off. Learn some songs by other bands, like My Morning Jacket, or Wilco. They're better songs to cover, and you'll look smart and like you have good musical taste, instead of some fucking teenybopper Dave wannabe.

i dunno, man. i think he's a good songwriter, so if you don't play "crash into me," then i think you can justify it... as long as you don't sound like a queer.

Oh, I totally agree that Dave's a good songwriter, why else would I be on this site? I think Dave is one of the best songwriters ever. I just don't think anyone can pull off covering any of his songs.

Dave is not hard to sing... If you have a good voice and your not trying to be Dave Matthews. By no means is it Pathetic to play DMB covers... BAH!!!

Well, as an artist, I hope my crowd already has respect for my musical taste before I choose/play a cover. If its by Dave Matthews, my fans will understand that I chose the song because I identify with it and I think its a good example of musical creation - nothing more.

Hopefully, that is...

I saw DMB in 94 or 95 (it was a long time ago) and he butchered 41 (I think). Forgot the words, made some up, sang half-turned looking at Carter smiling, then gave up and they jammed. I was pretty close to the stage and remember realizing the song was messed up.

Last summer at the Meadows with Warren Haynes on stage he blew the second verse.

Point being, it didn't slow him down. If he can mess up his own song 12 years apart in front of thousands, anyone can.

The fact that you care shows it probably won't happen much. Good luck.

I think you should cover songs that you love. And if you happen to love DMB (like me) then why not cover it?

I don't like My Morning Jacket at all, so why in the heck would I want to play their songs?

The passion intro with a delay pedal ranks up as one of the most fun things to play on the guitar...next to freebird of course. :rolleyes

I can, I wouldn't consider myself a good classical player though. Since I graduated high school I've pretty much exclusively played jazz.

This is a pretty ridiculous statement. Covers do not have to be spot on, especially when it comes to vocals; that being said, I love Dave's voice but it is not irreplicable like someone like Plant's, let's be serious...

thats rediculous. if you can cover someone good and give it your own twist why not cover it. my old acoustic band would cover a dmb tune now and again but our singer had his own unique style of singing it and the audience loved it. if you can pull off a cover tune and it works than do it. if not, then cover someone else.... or write your own tunes
