Last night, I had a gig on campus. This time, i showed up to the venue 2 hours in advance with my own PA, equipment, etc. - i did it right.

IT SOUNDED AMAZING.

Before, I personally thought that I had a good, full unique acoustic tone when I was playing in my room, in the backyard, for friends... but I had a lot of trouble recreating that sound through my pickup, through a PA, etc. I didn't know how to sing into a microphone (learning how to back away because I use a lot of vocal dynamics), I had trouble because I "attacked" my strings a little too hard, all that stuff.

But last night was different. I played my acoustic (fishman natural II) through my Fender acoustisonic amp and output that directly into the PA. My lead player played through his nice vintage fender amp (not sure what model) and we used a Shure sm-57 to mic the amp - put that through the PA. I bought a Shure Beta 58a and used it for vocals for the first time through the PA (by the way, best mic ever i highly recommend it... SOOOO worth the extra cash). We didn't use an external mixer, but the amp for my roomates SoundTech PA has simple levels (it was all we needed for our acoustic/vocals, electric lead duo).

It just sounded awesome. It sounded like it does when I play for my friends, etc. I was so much more comfortable knowing the sound was dead on and was what I really sound like. I've played over 40 gigs, but I'm only 20 and I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Last night's gig was different.

And it showed in CD sales, crowd reaction, and interest after the show. I sold 15 CDs (to a crowd of 50 people, not too bad), and some people wanted them autographed haha, my website has had 100 hits since last night and my new band got two gigs (we haven't even rehearsed with our drummer bassist yet - we just found them in the last week). The new material is two weeks old, but it got the best reaction of all (because it was written with my really good lead player in mind).

Sorry for the long post, but i'm still like high from this gig last night and I wanted to share!

You sound pretty good. I'm curious, do you smoke weed when you write your songs, or do you do it sober? I'm serious.

you know, songwriting for me takes a LONG time. the original ideas for most of my songs (verse/chorus riffs, vocal hooks, etc.) a lot of times do come out when I'm fucked up haha. and i write songs in batches, probably 4 or 5 at a time. i'll give ya an example - the last "batch" i wrote happened from Dec. 2006 - Jan 2007. over my christmas break i spent a lot of time with my friends... drinking, smoking, and having fun - and writing some fun stuff to party with and some cool riffs to write on.

i probably came up with 8 verse riffs and 4 choruses (matching the choruses to a few of the verse riffs) and maybe 2 vocal hooks. i then spent weeks/hours etc. developing sections, adding bridges, and stuff like that - most of the time sober. then i write lyrics whenever i feel like it.

im in a writing mood today so i couldnt just give you an easy answer haha - but i create a little more when i'm a little impaired, but the songs take a while to develop (most of the time, that is - a few of my tunes, i just sat down and wrote 'em in one sitting - it just happens that way sometimes, drunk or sober)

Yeah, I feel like I come up with awesome riffs when I'm high, and when I come up with one I'm so happy because I know it's gonna keep me entertained for a long time. When I'm sober though I feel like alot of stuff I try to come up with is stupid and derivative, and too busy, if that makes sense. I think laziness is a great quality in music, and alot of Dave's stuff, especially his early stuff, has that real lazy, lethargic quality to it, and that's a direct effect of writing when your high.

I'm not a pothead or anything, I just think being high and coming up with riffs and lyrics is one of the most fun things you can do, but I have too much guilt associated with it so I haven't smoked in a long time, and probably won't for a long time either.
