Well, with the Budweiser Shootout on saturday night, and it being Media day at Daytona today I thought it was time for the new 2007 NASCAR thread. This year there are many changes that should take the sport to the next step. Toyota's will be in the top series, there will be 12 drivers in the chase, and the Car Of Tomorrow will be run in 16 races this year. Now that Speed Weeks 07 is officaly started lets talk NASCAR.

Big Nascar fan. This year is going to be real interesting. There are more than 43 full time teams so its going to be interesting. They also changed the past champion provisional rule. This is mainly going to affect Jarrett, since he is driving a new team. They limited it to only 6 races. I think alot of the toyota teams are going to struggle. I expect teams like Red Bull Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing to miss a few races. I'm also looking forward to seeing what Juan Pablo Montoya will do in Nascar.

Yeah it sucked for Kahne he got stuck on the wall and had no where to go when #11 slid up there.

I always get my damn stations confused. Thanx. :cool

EDIT:
Did anyone else use the Raceday Scanner last night? I had major issues with it, something like a 15-20 second delay(usually under 5) and then Kahnes channel had Ryan Newman on it all night. WTF is up with that?

I can't listen to it because of the delay. By the time you here what is going on in turn 1 and 2, they are diving into turn 3.

I'm so sick of seeing Tony Stewart win. NASCAR is turning into motocross, without any excitement because the same people win every week. I would love to see Rudd take the 500. Or someone like Jarrett. An oldtimer that can still tear it up.

36 races in a year....Stewart won 5 races last year, and 5 races the year before.

What driver is "winning every weekend"? Its no different than any other form of racing...the same group of people run good. It has to do with skill and the full team....Rudd wont win cuz he sucks.

No sorry, not every weekend, but just a group of racers. Like stewart won 5 Kahne won six etc, how many other drivers posted more than one win count? It adds up to 36 quickly.

And you edited, so this is basically the same thing.

High up, too. Paid about 300 for Busch and Cup tickets, on ebay.

And I am sick of Tony Stewart even winning 5 races, because he thinks he's cool, and climbs the fence, and then still proceeds to complain about someone getting in his way. He's the biggest whiner in the sport and I'm just sick of him.

Go Harvick!!! (won today) :thumbsup

i had the privledge of hanging out with Kevin Harvick (driver of the #29 Shell/Penzoil car) two weeks ago.

he was in town doing promo's for Shell and did a signing at the George R. Brown convention center for the huge petro/gas convention that was going on. i got lucky and got assigned his booth, to watch the million dollar car that they drove into the convention center and to stand next to kevin so no hillbillies jumped him. he was a really cool guy, answering tons of questions; i really learned alot. he mentioned that outside of racing, he rarely drives and prefers to leave it up to his wife. he said he simply can't trust the other drivers on the road like he can trust the drivers on the track... makes sense to me.

the best part of the two days though was on friday when i got to push the car out to the lot and start the baby up! small block V8 makes a pretty loud noise running straight pipes dumped!

I was gonna start a new thread... I still might...

But does anyone else just fuckin laugh at Nascar? Does no other American besides me and some select people I know realize that it is nowhere CLOSE to the best racing in the world?

Yes I understand that it is whats all over American media and we aren't really able to see good racing on TV that much... But Nascar is probably the 4th MAYBE 3rd best to other types of racing. World Rally and Lemans absolutely run train on Nascar and I just find all the hype around the Daytona 500 absolutely hilarious. I would just love to see Dale and Jeff and all these guys get in some real world racing and just get their asses handed to them. Why so much hype for cars taking left turns all day, getting in a draft, and pitting at the correct time????

I honestly DO NOT understand it and will respectively listen to some good replies.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. I don't like soccer, i think it is the gayest sport ever. But i accept the fact it is a big sport and some people enjoy it. I don't go into a soccer thread and try to talk shit about it. No one here ever said it was the best racing ever. I mean what do you expect. This is the top american racing series. Do you expect americans to go crazy for f-1 and get up at 3 am to watch a race?

I'd been waiting for a post like this for awhile. Whenever a Nascar thread comes up someone comes in and says it sucks. Its like if someone started a DMB thread and I came in and said "DMB sucks phish is so much better!" It obvious you don't get Nascar, thats fine with me. Just don't come into a thread and belittle it, just move on.

BTW, I watch all sorts of racing, Nascar, Indy, F-1, Rally, Baha.

well lets see how montoya does. if starts winning every race, then you may have a point. if he can't do shit all season, after all the success he's had in Indy and F1, then you'll need to reexamine your opinions and realize that there's more to NASCAR than just turning the wheel to the left.

I wouldn't say the reason so many americans like it is because of the lact of tech. It is because this is the top american series. :thumbsup When I was growing up in the early 90's in Richmond, Virginia drivers would do autograph signings at grocery stores, auto part stores, etc if a race was in town. This was before Nascar got as big as it is today. Often times there would be maybe 100 fans at most at these signings. Well one time we went to one for mark martin and at most 5 people showed up. We got to talk and get pics with Mark for almost a full hour. He was so down to earth and such a nice guy. Ever since then i've be pulling for him. He is not my favorite but I have mad respect for him. Just wish he could have got the 500!

So i missed the last three laps because of fucking group presentation work. DAMNIT I missed a firey turned over wreck (havent seen on in YEARS) AND i missed Kahne missing yet another wreck this race to come in 7th to help alleviate the points levied against his team.

Seemed like him and his spotters were having some issues at the begining but the new team director worked out pretty well. Kahne was very vocal on his distaste for restrictor racing on the scanner dropping several f bombs about teh DLP car and th overall stupidity of some of the drivers. Thank god next week is Cali and a speedway, where Kahen will have the opprotunity to win.

Sadler did great today, Im proud of him on Evernham Racing, he's been a great addition from what Ive seen. As for Riggs. What the hell happened to him that he fell so far back so fast.

I dont like either Busch so fuck them.
Tony getting a DNF sucks.
I cant stand Jr. either.

Overall a very interesting race today.

This was only the third time I missed the 500 since 1992....when I say missed I mean didn't go. Very amazing race. I was pissed when Tony Stewart crashed, and when Mark didnt when, but you really can't be upset with a race that fun to watch. One of the best 500's in years...just what NASCAR needed. However, the Car of Tomorrow is really dumb and I think it is going to lose a lot of the older NASCAR fans.

Gordon has been consistent all year and because of that, will the chase. I did think the race was somewhat boring yesterday when jr was leading. However, it seems that happens at talladega when he leads and takes them to the high lane during the middle of the race. They're just logging laps. To me, watching the last 20 laps or so is the real race at talladega.

I don't really hate it. It's just gets a bit boring to watch knowing that if they took them off that there would definitely be some that are good and some that are bad, and more importantly racing at well over 200 mph. Now if that wouldn't be exciting, as well as separate the men from the boys, I don't know what is.

I'm also not a fan of having the horsepower trimmed back so much that guys that have never raced NASCAR feel comfortable debuting at a place like Talladega.

Im just happy that Khane ran well with a COT on a non-restrictor plate track. I really hope the Evernham program can get turned around this summer, they dropped the ball big time on COT. And with a big time sponser like Bud you cant be finishing off the lead lap in 35 every race.

The only reason Newman even got to the lead was Gordon had a horrible restart cus he was low on gas and a bunch of cars had to check up. Newman didn't check up and was able to pass them high. The race was his if he didn't wreck. Not really a Newman fan either. I think he's kinda over rated.

Saturday wasn't a COT race. Talladega was the last one of the season.

Comments on the race. Tony can't drive. How in the world do you hit THREE cars on pit road? Oh, and during one caution Tony decided to drive through the front stretch while they were cleaning it (cars were being led down pit road oops). It was awesome to see Jeff win his second in a row. However Jimmie clearly had the car to beat. When he was up front no one could keep up, and after spinning himself out he drove through traffic like they were standing still. I was in turn four at the Firecracker 400, and again this weekend. I don't think I want to sit anywhere else ever.

Him hitting those cars on pit road is 100%, yes...100% the fault of his spotter. Yes...100%. Well, actually, 95% because the other 5% falls on the pit crew member that told him to go. The drivers can barely turn their heads..there are no side mirrors! The HANS device and the sides of the seat prevent them from seeing much in their peripheal....they rely 95% of the time on their spotters to know if they have any cars besides them, unless the front of the car next to them is literally nose to nose.

Tony will bring the Toyota their first win. No one has a problem with Toyota dominating the truck series.

not true, I was at the first race Toyota was in at Daytona in the truck series...the entire crowd cheered when they crashed out haha.

Also, I did hear about this awhile ago, I just forgot about this thread (Even though I created it :o )

I'm a fan of anybody but Johnson in '08. I hate when one driver dominates like that. By the end of the season I should could not watch because I knew Johnson would never finish out of the top 5 or would just win every race....boring!

He's prob in my top 5. I used to hate him. He got into Nascar right about the time I started watching in the early 90's. He's one of the few guys from then who's still racing.

As far as a favorite I really don't have one. Theres guys I like Kahne, Sadler, Burton, Edwards and guys I don't Stewart, Harvick, Newman, Kyle Busch.

My favorite car has always been the Texaco car. Davey Allison was my 1st favorite driver. He died when i was about 12 or 13. Then I pulled for Ernie Irvan and he was critically injured in a practice wreck. He had something like a 5% chance to live. Nobody thought he would. Well he did and he came back a few years later and won a couple races. Since then i really havent had a favorite.

I can't stand either Busch brother. I don't want them or Gordon to ever win anything.

I like Kahne, Stewart, Harvick, Burton, Martin, Johnson, Hamlin and Jr.

My mom screams for Johnson, my dad likes Edwards and my boyfriend likes Martin. And we all hate Gordon and the Busch brothers.

I still don't know how I feel about Montoya. He came in and I was alright, then he got real aggressive and whiney and then backed off. I dunno, I guess he just hasn't grown on me yet.

I watched that last reace commentary and they were tlaking about how Toyota was asked to scale down their engines in the truck seris becase they produced more HP than the other teams. How is this even close to fair, if Toyota can figure it out let the other teams catch up.

Toyota in NASCAR is a great thing, considering Ford and GM produce all their cars in Asia, Id rather have Americans working and making money and foreign investors being fat cats than the other way around.

You watch next yeah Evernham will have their kinks figured out. Kahne will dominate next year like he did in the beginning of 2006. I am def looking forward to 2008 with Evernham.

Not sure how many dirt track fans there are here, but I went to the Chili Bowl midget nationals here in Tulsa tonight. Not a great night for the Nascar guys. JJ Yeley spunout in the B feature and missed the A main, so he has a lot of work to do to make the championship A main Saturday night. 2 time and defending champ Tony Stewart started the A main 4th and was running 4th in the final transfer spot for Saturday's A main when he got passed with a few laps to go by a kid that couldn't have been older than 16. Tony finished 5th and will have to do some work Saturday to make his way into the A main. Kasey Kahne runs tomorrow night, but he was in the pits after the races and my wife got his autograph. Pretty cool night.

For anyone interested, Saturday night's race is available for the first time on pay per view

Yeah, it's great stuff. My dad started taking me and my brother about 25 years ago when I was six or seven years old. We lived a few miles from a sprint car track and a midget track.

Saw Smoke last year, but when we got around to his trailor last night he was no where to be seen. He was probably pretty pissed giving up his transfer spot. Like last year he had a sign up saying he will only sign autographs after the A main Saturday night. But he signs every one. The line last year was unreal. With the race ending around 11pm he must have been up signing autographs until four or five in the morning.

What makes the Chili Bowl so great is there are drivers from every type of racing you can think of. Indy, Nascar, drag racing, every type of dirt track racing, etc. It keeps growing every year and they had to add a fifth night this year. I think there are 285 entries this year.

I saw Smoke and Kasey! I got Kasey to sign my wristband and got a picture with him but the flash washed us both out. We look like ghosts! I'll try again next year!

I wish I was going tomorrow so I could get a picture with Tony. Oh well, maybe next year! At least I saw him and got a few pictures of him. He was keeping his back to everyone. And he was wearing a shirt that said Tool on it. I couldn't tell if it was the band or what. I was totally creepin' on Kasey though. I took so many pictures of him.

I had a blast though. I loved walking around the pits looking around and taking pictures of everything possible. Plus I got to watch Kasey move from 13th to 4th in the A feature.

I basically love auto racing.
