It is March 1
Championship week begins next week. Selection Sunday is 10 days away. Who's ready? Who wants to participate in an Ants yahoo tourney pickem?
I'll begin. OSU (obviously) chances are thin, especially with star Mario Boggan out due to an extreem lack of intelligence. If OSU wins it's last two road games, we will finish 22-9 with an 8-8 conference record. No Big 12 team has gotten into the tournament with a record of less than 9-7.
So now, we root for Memphis, Xavior, and all the other leaders of the one bid conferences to win the tournament so they don't steal an at large bid that we might be able to get.

I don't think the Pokes have a prayer to get in... unless they do serious damage in the Big XII tourney.
The only madness I'll be watching will be the NIT! WOO!

I think that the key to going a long way in the tournament is a solid big man and a clutch shooter/ballhandler. If you look at:
Florida: Noah/Humphrey
UNC: May/Felton
UConn: Okafor/Gordan
that has been the real key to those teams ultimately winning. With that being said, you have to look at Ohio state, unc, Georgetown, or other teams that have a similar inside/outside tandem to take the title

I have mixed feelings when it comes to all these small schools getting bids just because of their respective conference championships. On one hand, it keeps things fresh and new and gives underdogs a chance to show what they are capable. On the other hand, it leaves hands out some incredibly questionable snubs to teams in some tough conferences. No offense to Long Beach State, but they are going nowhere.
My most offensive snubs are' Cuse, Kansas State, WVU, and Air Force

Yes, Niagara vs FAMU is the "play-in" game this Tuesday. The play-in lets the NCAA to allow 65 teams into the tourney as opposed to 64. The winner of the play-in goes up against (1) Kansas in Chicago on Friday.

its my favorite part of the tourney. it takes out the boise state argument (ncaa football). i mean lets be honest, the teams you mentioned aren't going anywhere either, but most of them can have good years and will be in the tourney. long beach state would have to have an amazing year to get a chance (and even then would be snubbed), but with the automatic bids it gives every team a shot at the tourney.

tankdan
03-11-2007, 11:18 PM
I like Wisconsin, Kansas, Texas A&M, and Texas in the Final Four. Knee jerk reaction to the bracket.
I'd like to think UNC can go all the way to at least give the ACC some representation, but Texas or at least USC could beat them in the Sweet 16. I hate watching Hansbrough play, but if he and Brandon Wright turn up the heat, it'll be hard to compete with their deep bench.
Also, I'd like to think that Virgina Tech and Duke could meet in the Elite 8 in that region, but I don't see the Hokies beating Kansas and Duke... well I just hate them, even if Kansas is the only team in that region who could take care of them.
My 12-over-5 is definitely Arkansas over USC. No way is Illinois beating Virginia Tech and definitely no way do Old Dominion and Long Beach State beat their #5 opponents.
Finally... Look for Maryland to go to the Elite 8 before falling to Wisconsin.
Champion: Kansas. They've got it.

The Silukis can't beat Virginia Tech in the second round. Memphis is all bark and no bite and A&M will beat them. Nevada, no way. WSU? Won't beat Georgetown.
Texas or UNC will beat Georgetown in the Elite 8.
And, I hate to say it, it'll be tough for BC to beat the Hoyas.

I know the 5/12 matchup is always prone to upsets, but I dont think Ark. can get out of the 1st round... if anything I would have to say out of this yr's #5 teams, Ten. has the greatest chance of being knocked out, they fluctuate way too much... to each his own tho...

I agree with you on Wisconsin. Granted I'm a little biased but at the same time they have been on a slide lately since the Butch injury. He wasn't an amazing player but it still hurt them. With that said I think they make the Sweet 16 and go home.

3 Big XII teams in the Final Four? i'd love to see it, but it just can't happen.
Okay, maybe not A&M in the San Antonio region, but you've got to like Texas for the Final Four, right? I think they could beat UNC and maybe even Georgetown.
Taking a second look at the brackets... I feel pretty good about seeing Ohio State win the region. Besides Acie Law IV, I have no other good reason to root for A&M. Ohio State appears to be the most dominating team in that region, and should have the "easiest" road to the Final Four of all #1s.
I picked Wisconsin for the championship about a week ago, but that was before they failed to break the 50 point mark against Ohio State... Now, I guess I'm not so sure. Their 17 game win streak won me over a few weeks ago, but they've only scored above 55 points ONCE in the past six games... Yikes!
(Wisconsin score on left-hand side)
55-64 loss @ Michigan State
48-49 loss @ Ohio State
52-50 win vs Michigan State
70-57 win vs Michigan State (Tourney)
53-41 win vs Illinois (Tourney)
49-66 loss vs Ohio State (Tourney)
Heck, if you don't break 55 points, it'll be hard to beat Georgia Tech in the second round, as they average 79 points a game.
Therefore, I have to make a revision in prediction... And it's a toss-up in my mind with Texas vs Georgetown, so I picked the Hoyas for now.
Final Four: (4) Maryland, (1) Kansas, (2) Georgetown, (1) Ohio State
Champion: Kansas

Not only did he score 32 points, not only did he shoot 100%, but 7 three-pointers from one guy? That's great!
Go Ducks, that's all I'm saying. I like Oregon-Georgia Tech in the Sweet 16.

I don't think Southern Ill could hit the broad side of a barn from the inside, but they have some good matchups.
I'll be posting the annual ants column tourney picks in a jiffy.

Jake,
I love how you actually used TWO different insults in describing SIU, one here and one in the column...
Can't hit the broad side of a barn
and
Can't hit water if they fell out of a boat.
THAT, sir, is a great effort at variety that I appreciate. And yes, I agree. SIU doesn't beat anyone in this tournament. Even if 'Silikus' is fun to say out loud...
And yes, I did chuckle. I love all the stats about 5-12, 8-9 and 7-10, but, if someone reads through your bracket quickly, it seems reckless and haphazard the way in which you trust the numbers implicitly. Good work!
So, tips for bracketeers...
Pick one, two, three, or all 12s over 5s.
Pick two 9s over 8s.
Don't pick more than two 1s for the Final Four.
If you feel lucky, pick a 14 over a 3.
Am I about right? Are those the essentials?

You see, I go the other way with the 5 - 12 games.
I take all the 5's. I know that a 12 beats a 5 every year, but it is normally just 1 of the 4, so my odds are much better if I just take all the 5s rather than trying to guess right on one.

It's just kind of a joke Jake does based on crazy stats that always come out this time of year. I look at it as sort of a parody on outrageous predictions that are made around now because of stats like "Notre Dame has never won against a team from one of the first 17 states in America when the weather is below 82 degrees in Phoenix, given it is a Thursday."

Texas is horrible defensively. They aren't good at closing games. Durant will get his, but Terry is big and athletic enough to get a hand in his face on many shots. Wright will abuse anyone not named Durant on offense and if Durant spends time guarding him defensively his offensive game could suffer. Augustine will have to exert so much energy keeping up with Lawson his legs may be gone the last 10 minutes of the game. Hansbrough might have the mask off by the second weekend. Ellington found his stroke in the ACC Tournament and played great ball. North Carolina is a better rebounding team. Texas likes to run, but they aren't deep enough to run with North Carolina.

i agree texas will be tired. but two things they have, first they will have the full week to recover. second, unc doesn't close out games or take advantage of the weak legs. they had nc state put away this weekend (and nc state was dog ass tired) and let them come back. they never lost control of the lead, but it became a one possession game. i see texas in the same situation, but they will close it out and they will be able to put away unc.
put it this way, texas is down by 10 at the half. unc lets them back in the game and it becomes a 3 point game with 3 minutes to go. i don't see unc stopping durant from giving texas the lead, and i don't see unc with enough of an answer to that. again, i'm not saying unc has no chance, its going to be a ball buster either way, that just seems more feasible than unc stopping the best scorer in the country.

What makes you think Texas will be able to close out the game? Kansas outscored them by 16 in the second half to close the regular season and a total of 9 in the second half and OT yesterday. Durant will get his, but that does not mean Texas will win. He's scored more than his season average in 7 out of their 9 losses. The Texas bench scored a combined 11 points in those two games against Kansas. It's weak. Texas is a team that would try to run with Carolina and the Heels will likely be able to exploit their bench or face a team that is less fresh than them at the end of the game.

i didn't see the first kansas game, but i know yesterdays game they were outscored b/c they were just worn out as a team from playing 4 games in a row. coupled with the number of minutes the top guys on texas play, they just ran out of gas. but thats 4 days of wear and tear, not a week off.
but your right, i see unc chance in winning on really taking it to durant on both ends of the ball, and then using their bench to outlast texas. so i guess my question to myself is will that be enough? right now i'm 50.5% in favor of texas and 49.5% unc, but that can change between now and thursday.

Another factor is I think Ty Lawson could be a very tough matchup for Augustine. Lawson played fantastic defense this weekend and shut down two pretty good point guards in Tyrese Rice and Engin Astur. On offense he's faster than anyone Augustine has guarded.
I really like UNC inside in that potential game as well. I don't think James can stop Hansbrough and Wright is the kind of player who could have success against Durant. I'm not sure Durant's guarded anyone with a longer wingspan in college and could see Wright taking advantage of that with some easy baskets in the post or getting Durant in foul trouble.

Texas won't be an easy out by any means, but I think teams who slow it down are the biggest threat to North Carolina. I think the Heels played better halfcourt ball this weekend then they have much of the year, which could be big.

Texas also played 3 very hard fought games. wn 20 to Baylor only to have the Wonderkid save them. A very tough win to an overachieving OSU team in the tournament, and then a great first half against Kansas.

if i remember my discreet math i think it is
2^1 * 2^32 * 2^16 * 2^8 * 2^4 * 2^2 * 2^1 = 2^64 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 possibilites

13/16 so far. this is my best start in years. Marq, Tx Tech, and GW spoiled it all.
How gratifying was it to see that Paulus prick lose after he shoved Maynor and then the ref immediately went to talk to Maynor instead of the golden boy from Duke? Man, that pissed me off. I usually don't have any beef with Duke, but I was sooo glad that VCU beat them the way they did. It was also hilarious to see Scheyer afraid to shoot the whole game.

Yesterday the higher seeds were 13-3. Two of the 3 losses were 9's beating
8's and the other was the Duke loss.

Look out, Georgetown... my Eagles played their best game of the season today, executing every facet of the game to the tee... Threes, blocks, rebounds, foul-shots... Saturday is going to be AWESOME.

24-8. Each of the eight teams I got wrong are NOT picked to win the next game, so that basically leaves me perfect, right?
My final four on my bracket is Kansas, Wisconsin, A&M, and Georgetown. My bracket in my head thinks Florida or someone will beat Wisconsin before the final four, but that's not in writing.

For the first 3/4 of that game today, any team in the tourney could beat Wisconsin. I HATE how streaky Taylor is. He's going to end up getting them killed.

I picked Wisconsin for the championship about a week ago, but that was before they failed to break the 50 point mark against Ohio State... Now, I guess I'm not so sure. Their 17 game win streak won me over a few weeks ago, but they've only scored above 55 points ONCE in the past six games... Yikes!
(Wisconsin score on left-hand side)
55-64 loss @ Michigan State
48-49 loss @ Ohio State
52-50 win vs Michigan State
70-57 win vs Michigan State (Tourney)
53-41 win vs Illinois (Tourney)
49-66 loss vs Ohio State (Tourney)
Heck, if you don't break 55 points, it'll be hard to beat Georgia Tech in the second round, as they average 79 points a game.

I didn't have much confidence in Wisconsin after looking up those numbers a few days ago, but they came back from EIGHTEEN points down against A&M-CC to win by THIRTEEN. Throw in Kamron Taylor's 24 points, ALL in the second half, and I'd say Wisconsin is a team that can turn it on when it needs to be turned on. In my head, I still think they won't make the Final Four, but on my bracket, I wrote them as such.
UNLV isn't gonna be the team to beat Wisconsin. Oregon, Maryland, or Florida all stand a better chance.

Yeah big deal they came back. They were playing a bum team. They are supposed to come back. Wisconsin can't score enough to make it far in the tournament. On my bracket, I have florida, maryland, winthrop and unlv advancing. Florida and unlv in the regional finals and florida going to the final four.

Well, looks like we both lost one of that region's four teams... Poor Terps... Free throws will kill you. I've got Florida, Oregon, and Wisconsin in that region, so we'll see!

Yeah, I thought Maryland got robbed at the end. That was a ridiculous charge call at the end on Strawberry. I thought BC might pull off the upset there for a minute. It would have been bad for my bracket but i was hoping for it anyway.

You guys are better than Vanderbilt, and had you been in a lesser region, would have been in the Sweet 16.
And if you still had that center who was dismissed from the team earlier in the season, you certainly wouldn't have been a 7 seed.

If USC should win the tourneyment, I think I have a shot to win my pool.
Looks like Virginia may be in trouble in the second half without that guard. They'll need his ankle to win this game. (I can't think of his name)

Yes, we prefer not to speak his name on campus these days. His complete lack of common sense or a grasp of how to handle a "second chance" is just mind-boggling.
He started last season on suspension, he started THIS season on suspension, and then he KEPT doing whatever he was doing (marijuana) even after those extra chances that Al Skinner gave him. He's pathetic and I hope he never makes it to the NBA. He's still around campus finishing up the school year, so that at least he has three full years of school to his name.
Disgusting. We would have been unstoppable with him.
Oh well, we really peaked last year with Craig Smith and Louis Hinnant, plus Dudley and Marshall... No more.
I guess we all better look out for Vanderbilt, they seem to keep winning these important games.
Go Hokies, Go Cavs!

Welp, Wisconsin screwed me. I was having my best brackets EVER and then they go and choke on a fat dick. Not that I'm surprised though, I just wish I wouldn't have put so much faith in a Big 10 team. I won't be surprised if OSU is out by next round...:rolleyes
I was 37 of 40 before today. I'll probably end up 42 of 48 by the end of the day, with 13 Sweet 16 teams still alive. But Wisconsin was in almost all my brackets as a Final Four team. I'm such an IDIOT! :BANG
