I love soccer but I really dont watch much except for when the world cup comes on (and sometimes sat with the MSL). So therefore, I have NO idea who is going to win the cup, although I know it wont be the USA. Does France have a chance this cup? And I heard on Pardon The Interruption they said Brasil was only ok this time around.
Hopefully that made some sense. If it didnt, I am a big soccer fan, but dont watch it that often, just the cup (and some MSL).

I hate soccer, I sometimes call it 90 minutes of boredom, but for some reason when the World Cup comes around I get interested in soccer. Its sort of like the Olympics, every four years and you get addicted to it and when it ends you can't wait for it to come around again.

I was born Holland so that is my team since the US team is a complete joke. The Dutch team would have been damn good if the organitions could get their acts together. Instead all our players didnt want to play, our coach is a piece of junk and we didn't even qualify.

Italia, France, and Germany have all the cards. The Azzurri look strong, as usual. Inzaghi will miss the first game, but when you have a player like Del Piero to start in his place, who cares?
Don't even look for the US to win a game. They got destroyed by European teams in friendlies in the past two months and the crowd in South Korea will take them right out of the game.

I think it's funny how they are saying Brazil sucks this year. Yet they could still beat 90% of the teams out there
I hope the US wins atleast 1 game, that would make it 2 total wins in 3 world cups

very true
i think the US has a shot to get through to the 2nd round, but at the same time if they went 0-3 I wouldnt be shocked. I would love them to get by pull an upset or two. It would be great for soccer in this country

A little of uruguayan soccer history..
before 1930 there was no FIFA World Cup, the games that were considered "world cups" were the soccer olympic games, Uruguay won the olympic soccer games in Colombes(France) and Amsterdam(Holland) in 1924 and 1928
Then, we won here at home the first FIFA world cup (1930) , the final game was Uruguay vs Argentina and we won 4-2
and then, in Brazil, 1950, we won against Brazil 2-1, and we were champions again
So, should this 1924 and 1928 titles be called "World cups", and we can say we won the soccer world cup 4 times just like Brazil did?
i want some opinions here :multi

cameroon played a good first half, fortunately ireland made a comeback in the second..robbie keane almost got that shot in but it had to hit the post:(
you can definitely tell they need roy keane in their midfield. Their offense was till lacking.

yup, cool cameback, actually i wanted Paraguay to lose, i dont like them much, ggggrrrrrrrrr, anyway, today i watched Brazil vs Turkey...man, Brazil always has such luck, that penalty(in my opinion it was not penalty) at the end of the game...man, maybe they paid Turkey's keeper to kick the ball so bad? lol...who knowsssss...anyway, i just left Italy vs Ecuador recording at home, i should see it later...

Did you see that Mexico game?! 1-0 MEXICO!!! :D And everyone was counting them out. ;) And Mexico may very well have the best fans this world cup too. That place was rockin'! Mexican fans were loud and plentiful. I think England has a lot of fans too but I don't they were as loud as the Mexican fans. Although I haven't seen all the games so maybe there are other countries with good support too. if Rodriquez is the Uruguay guy, yes that was the best goal. Senegal had the best celebration thus far and Klose from Germany with 3 goals (even against a bad team) was a great individual performace

:( Sweden is no pushover. They may not have qualified last WC but in 94 they finished in third place behind Brazil and Italy. And they have more of an offense this time around. I guess thats why they call it the group of death.
And how about those Asian teams? Coming through on their home turf. Japan almost won that game too. They put the ball in the net late in the game but it was called back. Can't wait for 2am tomorrow morning to hit........GO USA!!!

Two GREAT games today!
GO USA!!! What a game! :D They were scoring at will in the first half and missed an opportunity that could have made it 4-0 I thought. It was close at the end though. The US has to learn how to keep possesion, do one touch passes and just pass in general. Their defense got weaker too. But the last 5-10 minutes they came through again and held the fort. No one in that stadium except for the few who were in Sams Army wanted the US to win. Big game against South Korea next and its going to be loud. They looked good against Poland so it won't be easy. But the good thing is that they have Portugal left still and we have Poland. I think at least a tie will be good for the US.
And that Germany/Ireland game had a great finish! I couldn't believe they scored that goal. I was rooting for them cause they had a lot of fans there and they were loud. I'd love to see them in the second round. They are a feisty bunch too. Every play they were arguing with the Germans and trying to plead with the refs. It was a great game for reading lips.
Next upset:Uruguay over France...that would be great.:)

France vrs. yourgay: 0-0
Silva is a prick and should gotten a red card...he got subed out, started yellin at the coach, and didnt even aknowledge the person coming in....he should be riding the bench
That was a horrible game all-around. Uraguay put on one of the most disgusting displays I have seen since the last time I watched Argentina play. They're overdramatic, dirty, whiny, and petty.
The referee lost control early on. Henry's tackle may have deserved a yellow, possibly even a red if there was intent displayed, but there was none. Then that prick Silva gets away with nothing after he had clear intent to injure the player. It's things like that that really piss me off.
ssolins
06-06-2002, 01:05 PM
see, i think Henry should have gotten a yellow, a) because it wasn't intentional, and b) because there was little, if any, contact with the other person. dangerous yes, but not that bad. where as Silva intentionally tried to spike the guys leg and got nothing from it. Personally i think Silva should be riding pine the rest of the series, but it doesnt actually matter because Your-a-gay sucked and wont make it outta the round.

well, uruguay is responsible for now 2 french players not playing in the next game. Henry, id indirectly call them responsible for, the other player got his 2nd yellow card of the cup, due to an altercation started by the guy from uruguay. one guy missed a completley open net
That's your justification for insulting an entire country? Let's not forget we also have a gentleman from Uraguay who posts here.
In the end, we need to realize it is a game. The game is life for most people, but you don't have any reason to toss insults like that- it's childish and unnecessary.

the door is wide open for the USA. Looking ahead winning the group is a possibilty(still tough, but can happen) and that would be great b/c Italy will prob win Group G with Mexico finishing 2nd most likely. Playing Mexico(who we have beaten) would be nicer than Italy. That is still way off though

the penalty againt Owen should have counted. He was clearly kicked/hit in the knee and ESPN showed it from quite a few angles.
Batistuta and Veron did not play very well at all. Veron was also subbed very early, what was up with that?! I am glad that England(my fav intl team) won. Overall they played a good game although they were a bit too defensive at times. Damn do i love the ENglish crowd:babe

We don't really want to see that happen cuz my family is from Mexico and I don't want to have to see one them go out. ;) But yeah I think that would be much easier for the US if that happened. They are much more familiar with Mexico and their style of play than Italy. However Mexico has gotten much better since their first few games in the final qualifying round. It should be a good game to watch. I was banking on both teams to take second place in their respective groups which would mean that if they played each other it would be in the semi-finals. That win against Portugal surprised me. Oh well maybe Mexico can upset Italy.:)

our soccer was better in those times, but uruguayan soccer was always a defensive-counterattack soccer, with a good defense and fast forwards, sometimes we play bad yeah, but Rob, did u see Uruguay vs Italy , the last friendly game? we kicked their ass, we played high quality soccer, passing the ball everywhere, and we should have win...anyway, sometimes soccer is strange and exciting..

TWO motherfucking goals disallowed. One for Vieri being onsides (because he sure as hell wasn't onside) and the other for a Croatian defender yanking on Inzaghi. Italy def got screwed out of 2 goals, however their defense did make some key mistakes that led to the 2 croatia goals that never should have happen.
I think Italy will beat Mexico, and Ecuador will lose to both Mexico and Croatia, setting up a 3 way tie coming down to goal differential

France will beat Denmark even though they wont have Petit and Henry, but Zidane will be back, Dugarry starts up front, with their backs to the wall they will win. Uruguay will beat Senegal, leaving every team in the group with 4 points. If both games are decided by 1 goal everyone will have an even goal differential. It will then go to least goals against which will most likely put France in first place in the group, Uruguay in 2nd

Hey I'll try:) It's taken from a saga from the time of the vikings.. the vikingtime:)
"As the night passed by, the king found out that they had to go out on a 'viking' (some kind of trip) to both Mo and Holt, and they sailed away from they're castles in the longship Ohma to meet the other clans. One of thos clans were the Bambars. They lived on the other side of the Herman Krag lake. King Gudbrand went over to the Bambar-king and asked him if he wanted to "Battle-drink" (I have no idea what the word is in english, but you understand?). The Bambar-king said "Let's drink like we're friends tonight", then he said "Later, the war will come, in the Ludøl-time". And that's how it ended, they drank like friends for a while, and sailed away.
I'm thinking about changing it.. it's too long and no one understands it. :) And there are tons of sagas that's 1000 times more fun to read:)

I'm thinking about changing it.. it's too long and no one understands it. :) And there are tons of sagas that's 1000 times more fun to read:)

Hey good rally by Uruguay though! And poor Cameroon, outplaying those nasty Germans for 60 minutes... but the officiating, OMG?! I've NEVER seen so many cards in my life. What was going on?!
France: go home and practice, come back when you're ready to play for real. What a wasted cup for them.
Ireland: Congrats, you play Spain (haha)... should be a fun game though
USA: If you don't beat Poland, I might vomit... but then again, if you do beat Poland I might vomit. I just sort of feel like vomitting =)
Germany: You can thank the Saudis you're in. 8 goals given up and then play Camaroon to a stand still and then roll over against Ireland? Who's paying THEIR checks? =)

I officially have footballitis. Yes folks, thats right. Yesterday when I went to my parents house, I resorted to dribbling my brothers soccer ball all around the kitchen. It pissed my mom off, but my hunger for soccer was sedated for a fe minutes.
Of course on the way home I had to buy Fifa Soccer 2K2 for PS2. Yeah, and I didn't have a PS2 so I had to buy one of those as well.
But I spent an enjoyable evening continuing the glory of Manchester United in the Premiership league.

The France game was pretty good, although I wish that France had won. I love watching Zidane play.
And I hate that the US doesn't care about soccer. Maybe if we didn't have so many piss poor sports (NBA, MLB, etc.) we might actually have some soccer fans here.
It seems like the only soccer fans are foreigners who became US citizens and the people who used to play soccer when they were little.

would others agree that diving has been out of control this world cup? I can recall a few years back when I played some european teams in france and they dove a lot, but this is getting rediculous
Diving has always been a plague and they are clamping down on it more this year than in the past. With South American teams, however, it's ridiculous. Acting is a big part of their game- anybody who has watched Argentina has seen Ariel Ortega (the biggest diver in the past 25 years) take a dive and then complain to the ref for minutes on end. I think he's managed to get yellow cards given to balls in the past. He should have been kicked out of football after head-butting Van Der Sar 4 years ago, and he's still the biggest piece of shit in the World Cup.
It's still a major problem in SA, though- Ortega, Rivaldo, Ronaldo (who got a rule put in the books because he dove so much), Dunga, Silva... The list is ridiculously long. Every team in the world has a diver or two, but SA teams seem to have 5 or 6 each. Add to that the divers tend to have major attitude problems, they won't even think twice about launching a tackle that could break legs, and they complain to refs more in 5 minutes than most teams do in an entire game... It's disgusting.

If you ever play overseas in europe you will find out that players at all levels will immediatly dive and act like they are in agony even if you barely touch them. It is what they are taught. They watch the professionals adn try and imitate them and they catch on to the diving part. The officials in the games that i played in over there did little to stop this. Sometimes they even rewarded the player who dived by giving a card to the oposing player

I played for Beadling out of Pittsburgh, i went in 97 and 99
It happens everywhere, like I said. It's an epidemic in South America, where players match their bad acting up with vicious attacks on opposing players.
When we played in Europe we had a hard time matching the physicality. We didn't fall at all, and therefore were getting pushed all over the pitch.

Was that the one where he had the break away and wasn't fast enough to pull away so he jumped in front of the defender to get a push? If not then I'm thinking of the wrong play. I thought that referee was extremely good and was decisive when he needed to be throughout the entire match.

Mexico played a great game and deserved to win the group. They've had a hell of a world cup so far despite all the doubters.:) That goal by Borgetti was fucking incredible! I can't believe he got that shot on goal. Completely froze the goaltender. And after that they completely controlled the action. Its nice to watch a good passing team. I know you can't expect a team to be that good all of a sudden but I wish the United States would learn to play like that.
Overall I think it was a good match by both teams and fun to watch. Both teams knew how to play the game and had good opportunities. Both teams could have scored more than they did, with most of Italy's chances coming in the first half and most of Mexico's in the second half. Italy really needed that goal they got near the end of the game or else they would have had no momentum backing into the second round. Obviously they would have gone through anyway but they really needed that goal.
VIVA MEXICO !!!
I'll be waking up at 4:30 again tomorrow to watch the US play Poland.:) I love the World Cup!:D GO USA!!!
They were certainly onsides...
What the announcers didn't seem to understand is that is how Italy almost always plays. They don't have a ton of possession. They stretch the other team out, then counter quickly. Their goals almost always come in transition.
It was a well fought game on both sides. I love watching the Italian style of play, and Mexico's brought out the best in it.
The officiating on the sidelines was, as has been the case for the entire Cup, piss-poor. This cup will be known for two things- big guns falling in the first round, and the horrible officiating. Germany's last game was the icing on the cake- 14 yellow cards and 2 red cards. Before that we had Italy-Croatia. Even Brazil's first game was horribly officiated. You should rarely notice the man in the middle, but in these games they've taken center stage. This needs to stop.
Coster
06-13-2002, 11:57 AM
I actually think this officiating is good. I hate seeing all the dives and hard tackles and they are starting to crack down on it. It gives more integrity to the game. Sure they can't get every call right but but its better than letting that shit go. It was nice to see Italy get yellow cards for those dives they were taking today......and they weren't onsides.;)
You're wrong ;) I have the arials from the scaffolding. They were clearly onsides. The referee wasn't paying attention to when the ball was released. If you look at the players when they receive the ball, they're in an offsides position, but that doesn't matter- what matters is when the ball was released, and if you're looking at the linesman, he's clearly looking at the distributor, not the receiver, when the ball is released. He fucked up, we move on. At least it didn't cost us the game this time.
I'm glad they cracked down on the dives as well. Italy's were blatant. Mexico had them, too, but they went unpunished, which isn't surprising when playing a physical team like Italia.
It's not just my opinion about subpar refereeing, however. It's all over discussion boards. They're as tired as the players after the club seasn and they're simply making bad calls, missing important decisions, and generally drawing attention to themselves. Having the World Cup in Korea/Japan was a mistake. It's rushed, play has suffered, officiating has suffered, and because of it the fans are suffering.

I know we were rooting for opposing teams so we are going to see differnet things, but I don't think that Mexico dived at all. The only dives from them were by Blanco and none of them were called except for maybe one, but even on that one there was contact. In the last two world cups I think Mexico has really played the game with integrity, cutting down on the diving and hard tackles. It really is a point of pride with this team for me. In 94 they weren't worse than most of the teams but they did do their fair share of diving and had a lot of hard tackles. But in France four years ago and this year they have played a clean game on both sides of the ball and I'm extremely happy to see that.
As far as the refereeing I haven't seen every game and didn't see that Germany game with all the cards, but those that I have seen have been called great. I think people are saying there are bad calls because a lot of the favorites are losing and having a hard time, but I think thats just an excuse. And as always there is going to be one or two referees in the WC who are horrible from start to finish. But almost every yellow that has been given out has shown to be on the money in the replays of the games that I've seen, especially for the dives, which I'm extremely happy to see.
And we can go on forever on the offsides calls but I maybe only saw one that was close. The others were all good calls. Thats going to happen when you play the long high lobs like that.
I think watching a game with England, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc- they've done a good job with cracking down on the diving and acting. I said something like this earlier- every team has a diver or two in Europe, and they're finally being punished.
Watch a game with a team from South America- Uraguay, Brazil, Argentina- it looks like diving is accepted. Granted, that's 90% of what some of these teams do so they're good at it, but it's absolutely disgraceful. I can physically angry watching these games because the teams forgo their talent and go with hardcore cheating. Whereas European teams have one, two, or maybe three divers, SA teams are comprised of divers. They should have judges on the side rating their form, not referees calling a football match.
Personally, I'm glad to see Argentina out. I like watching France play when they're in top form, but clearly they weren't anywhere near top form this year.
I don't like Germany, I don't like their players, I don't like their style of play. However, they're a good team and deserve to go through, as they did. My concern now, however, is that the referee from their last game has seriously impacted their chances on this game by accumulating yellow cards. The Germans will be down several of their best players due to a referee who lost control of a match, not due to foul or dirty play, and that is a disgrace that will mar the entire World Cup, especially if Germany (who look to be the strongest team right now) bows out in the round of sixteen.

slitz Mexico won the group and tied Italy...don't think you can call them the weaker of the two teams. And I think every team is beatable in the World Cup this time around. A lot of parody going on. Even the Asian teams are lookin good. And if the US plays the rest of the tournament the way they played South Korea they are not going to be around for very much longer. Luckily for them South Korea is not a very good finishing team.
