Shooting At Virginia Tech

So, I wake up this morning at 8:20 to go to class and I am informed by my RA that we may not leave the building. So I'm thinking, "Cool, no class." I go back to my room and look out the window and see about 7 cop cars outside my dorm. Well, the cops seem to have it under control, so I get back into bed. About an hour later, I am woken up by a million cop car sirens. Then I hear people yelling "go inside, get inside, run!!!" At this point, I want to know what is going on. I get out of bed and there are a ton of people up and talking in my hallway. Apparently there was a shooting on our 4th floor and we are not to leave our building, still. No complaints here, especially now since the shooter is loose on campus. Now I'm safe and secure here in my dorm (or so I hope).

The dorm, The West Amber Johnston Hall I think? Seems really big, it holds like 800+ students, I could see where she wouldn't hear shots being fired.

I mean with students just like chillin outside watching, with that many people dead you don't know how many people have a gun. It just freaks me out. I don't know what Tech's dorms are like but mine were so gargantuanly concrete that you couldn't hear a damn thing. You could blast a 600 watt stereo system with bass all the way down and only hear it within a floor.

I think it might be reasonable that someone could sleep through the shootings. I grew up around guns - it wasn't uncommon to wake up to someone target practicing at 6am only to hear they'd been doing it for a couple of hours. I am mostly unaffected by a sudden, unexpected gun shot, having worked on a shooting range and been around them all my life.

This is a tragic event for all parties involved, but I'm not going to speculate until we have all the facts, which in all likelihood will be tonight at the earliest and possibly weeks or months.

As for security, I mean I'm in college and there isn't much you can do to stop this. I mean our dorms are locked, but anyone could walk in behind someone. Academic buildings are usually open. You can't do anything without sacrificing a LOT of liberties. It'd be close to martial law.

This isn't intended toward you, but I honestly can't stand that remark from anyone. Now we're an outright meritocracy? How do we know what the circumstances were? Maybe this person is coming off of a bad relationship breakup, maybe their family life isn't so good, maybe it's a terrorist, maybe it's not even a student. My point is that we should really wait before venturing guesses. You might be right, but you might be wrong.

He said his brother doesn't have classes before 1, so he's fine, but he talked to one of his friends that is an Engineering major that was in that building for his 9:05 class when the shooting started again. The kid said everyone could hear the gunshots and they were all hiding under their desks.

I'm sorry but you're asking for super human efforts from the people in charge. An hour might seem like a long time but look how long it took this to get to the media. There's no way you can ask a campus to lock itself down in an hour. That's almost logistically impossible. Even under the most ideal conditions, it would be difficult to shut down a campus of that size in only an hour.
