View Full Version : My band is kind of taking off...

What a fucking wild ride its been. We played our first gig on febuary 7 at a preliminary round of a battle of the bands. Last thursday we won the final round and now we're playing in front of 2,000 people at my school (Boston College). We'll be opening for a "secret" main act (last year it was matt nathanson, two years ago it was guster) on a huge outdoor festival stage with big stacks and lighting rigs, etc.
We got hooked up with a dude that takes pictures for Rolling Stone (he went to BC for a year before he dropped out to shoot pictures for a living) because he has a mutual friend and likes our music.
So he hooked us up with some cheap studio time and is going to put together a BANGING press kit. We should have live photos from this big outdoor show, a "sessions" DVD (i know a kid who works for our campus cable station - he directed the youtube video at the bottom), and a 5-song original EP.
I guess I just wanted to take the time to share a sort of success story with a bunch of people on these boards who have supported my songwriting over the years. Whenever I post something on here people take the time to give me constructive, interesting feedback. The suggestions I got on here helped hone my songwriting - from HolyCow as my first fan to nakedguy giving me his ultimate compliment ("it didn't completely suck") to mikedevoss and others telling me they liked the stuff.
I have already posted this song here, but this is a live video that I recorded for my school's cable TV show. It will probably be poppiest song off of our debut EP. It sounds empty without the band, but I'll keep you guys posted on what's going on with all of our shit.

Shit guys thanks a lot... I just figured i'd share with all the musicians around here. It's just so fun to make music with these guys. I feel so creative as a songwriter because I'm writing for other people. My influences (DMB, Zeppelin, Allmans, Beatles, Phish) are all meshing together for an interesting sound that is completely mine. It is so much fun.
My lead player was in an alternative rock band before and this band is like "setting him free" to just rip on lead. However, he writes parts for many of the verses, etc.
It's really fucking cool. Thanks for sharing the joy haha.

That's awesome news Andrew. I've listened to some of your stuff in the past and was very impressed by it. Plus I always see people complimenting your music in random threads that arn't even about your music - they just see your link in your sig or something.
I hope it continues to go well for you and the band!

i hear what you're saying. i think the riff is a little similar with the hammer, but its not a strummed chord to start and the second chord in the progression is different than the too much verse.
but ya, looking at it it does remind me of it a little bit. however, the goal when writing music is never to come up with something that someone else has already doen. I think the feel of it is a little different

i think it was a bit too straightforward for them. its a cool fucking riff in my opinion and it has a big chorus with an interesting bridge. but i think it's destined to be a campfire song. oh well haha

It's kind of a cool mix right now. I have a jazz-trained drummer who plays in our marching band so he's pretty snare-heavy which I like. My bassist played jazz standards for 10 years before this so he does a lot of cool little runs and arpeggios... if he gets a little funk in him this summer, he'll be the ultimate weapon.
And then there's my lead player. The kid rips pretty hard - he was never really into phish but his fallback tone reminds me of trey's with a lot of sustain and a little auto wah in there. But he has this dirty pedal board so he can go wherever he wants with a song. Another benefit to having him around is that he came from a set-in-stone alternative rock band and we're kind of a jammy band with lots of solos and spots for improvosation. We keep each other in line. If I get too far out there, he reigns me in... also, he's never really played in a band with the room for creativity like this one. So that's awesome.
Lately, we have been having my buddy that goes to Berklee come guest on keys. He's the single best musician I know so he just adds another dimension to the band. Damn its so fun! haha

BC is a cool place. I'd definately recommend coming here unless you've got a clearly better thing goin on. The combo of sports, major college programs, and this beautiful campus makes everything more fun.

I know the college wanted me to keep this a secret, but I just couldn't resist breaking the big news. The band you will be opening for is ME. That's right, international recording artist Chris Campione of the Chris Campione Trio.
(joke obviously)
It's good to hear people breaking through in such a tough industry to even get slightly moving in. It is so time consuming and frustrating sometimes, and I think that is where people get weeded out. Those who truly love the feeling of playing live will continue the struggle. It is hard trying to balance out my six figure job which takes up so much time, and pretty much doing all of the stuff for my band, which takes up the rest of my time. But I love it!
Congrats man.

thanks - unfortunately I have to come home this summer. I didn't get a "real job" lined up quickly enough out here. so i'll be back in chicago playing coffee houses and writing new music. however, next summer we're going to have a few residencies out here so i cancelled my study abroad plans for the spring and i'm going to go at it full time starting next fall.

as soon as i get enough material im going to start giging if i can manage it, then look for a band. pachow.this is my problem... it's hard to just "gig" as a sax player unless you play parties/weddings/receptions with a karaokee type recording to back you up (which i've seen done)... and those gigs never lead to playing shows of original music. At least as a guitar player you can get the ball rolling... I need to find a guitar player just to start the process

So my bassist and guitarist have mediocre equipment in terms of amps, etc.
However, for today we decided to go get some dirty stuff. So my guitarist is playing through a Mesa Boogie head and a Marshall cab and my bassist is plugging in to an Ampeg half stack. :)
We are going to sound 10x better than we ever have before haha! Hopefully we get a good soundboard.

That should be a great rig, but just make sure to keep everything balanced, or else your vocals will not show up at all. And nothing makes a band sound worse than when your just too damn loud and can't hear a single word being sung.

Ya... there's a legit sound team running things... I trust them. The real benefit to this is going to be the full tone we're gonna get. They'll mix everything together externally - they have those dirty amp mics that are black and flat on one side - not sure who makes them, but it's gonna sound unbelievable haha.

its frustrating we couldn't hook it up - the sound got all fucked up. the surprise band turned out to be saves the day (god damn kill me now). however, we were the only band that got a full set. the generator went out - saves the day played 3 songs and the other opener played 4... we played for a full half hour and about 1000 people were there by the end haha. it was amazing, but we couldn't get the soundboard together - it'll happen soon though. thanks for the interest guys it was so fun jesus haha

we were trying to set up to record into my guitarist's protools console and his computer and they called us up on stage. the thing was that the sound equipment got there way late and they were just finishing putting it together when we got there.
basically, right as we were about to finish setting up the recording, the sound guy yelled at us to RUN to the stage. its really too bad because we had dirty equipment and we sounded great.
however... we're doing studio sessions soon and we'll be able to post those... those'll be live

Count me in on the overuse of the word "dirty" brigade...
It has seemingly caught on like wildfire.
is it the new "wicked" or something?

is it the new "wicked" or something?
pretty much, wicked is still popular but dirty is becoming common; though i wouldn't type it.
you should consider at least mixing SOME audience recording into any soundboards that you put out... soundboards will always sound pretty good but without an audience mix too its VERY hard to make them sound great.
the acoustics just don't work, what you hear on a soundboard isn't what you hear live... that said soundboards will always sound good, aud recordings can do anything...

soundboards are tough unless you can record each line individually and edit it later. a regular stereo or mono board mix will usually be very unbalanced, especially if your stage volume for amps is loud.
Nice work dude. Saves the Day huh, kind of a let down but seems like the show went well. On a side note, I think you are gonna really need to diversify your songs if you want to take this somewhere. I just watched all of your vids and I felt like the songs were all the same. Same vocal range, similar rythum technique, and time sigs. Now there might be some variations, but all were extrememly similar. You could even just start with writing a slow song and a fast song. These are all medium paced and sound almost identical. Not trying to be overly critical, I just think you could do this with ease. Take some risks, try something new, I think you will be pleasantly suprised at what happens.

Keep in mind lots of these songs are just templates for my band to enhance the music and add our sound to things. Also, two of the songs were written together and i'm trying to decide which one to keep (lyons and wisemen) - that's why i taped both of them and why lots of the songs sound "similar." And lyons has been removed from the band reportoire - too boring haha.
A lot of my influence is tied to Dave Matthews - though i am trying to get away from it and diversify and express myself its hard to completly ditch influences (i am never trying to sound like dave or any of my other influences)
Anywho - since a lot of you are posting here and seem to be interested (which is tight by the way) - i was lazy today and recorded a bunch of shit.

Wow that's really fantastic. We would love to come to Wichita. However, we aren't really set up for touring right now.
If you're serious, though, maybe we can talk to your student government about setting up a date on a weekend second semester next year. If you have any friends involved with that stuff, etc. tell them to shoot me an e-mail at andrew@theprojectboston.com
We're pretty dirt cheap since we're such a young band, but we'll have a great press kit to put before your student budget comittee and we're going to be spreading our music.
Again, im floored that you say we have a growing following. Thanks so much!

So we finished the EP last night - its in post-production for mastering right now and we're working on some cover art and processing pictures and shit.
It sounds really good - unbelievable what a good job the engineer did with everything we captured. I'd love to have some clips for you guys, but we're not supposed to - our manager is trying to do this the right way and he's holding the clips until they're finished with everything (well, not holding them, but he asked us not to distribute them).
Anywho - check out www.theprojectboston.com for updates on it (we should have some clips up soon). We're gonna do a preorder too - so be on the lookout for that.
And of course, I'll post here when we have it all put together.

First track from the EP up on the website - streaming at www.theprojectboston.com. This song was condensed a lot for the studio version, but hopefully you guys like it in its shortened form.
Also, we got a dude to scratch some vinyl in the studio for us - we are going to try to incorporate a little of that into our live shows (without it being cheesy, of course) - I'm just trying to create a little variety haha

Hey Andrew,
I don't post much, more of just a floater on the boards... but I'm liking your stuff.
I'm a BC student '10 and when I heard you were playing Modstock I made a point to get there early enough to catch your set (almost had to cut a final a bit short to get there in time)... honestly The Project was the band most worth seeing that day, nice job. Also now that I think of it, I remember walking by the Chocolate Bar one day and hearing someone covering All Along the Watchtower on solo-acoustic, the Dave Matthews version of it. I'm guessing that was probably you too? I stopped in and listened for a bit and liked your style right off the bat, and Modstock and what I hear on your website only sounds better with the full band.
Good luck man and I hope to hear the band again.

And to address oneeyedjack - honestly, in no way am i in this for money. I would, however, like to make back the close to $1000 that i and my bandmates have invested in this band over the last year. Studio time isn't free - keeping the website running, etc.
I know i don't really have to defend myself, but I really really love making music - so I guess i'd rather ya'll understand my motivations. There are enough musicians out there in it to make a buck - i'm REALLY not one of them.
Thanks for all the positive feedback guys - this band is a ton of fun (i'm going to miss playing with them this summer a LOT)
