Alright all you Brewer fans out there, with less than a week until Spring Training starts, I think its time to start getting pumped for the 2006 season! We have Capuano, Sheets, Turnbow, Lee, Weeks, Clark, Jenkins, and others returning for more action.

Pre-season action begins on March 2 against the Giants and the season kicks off at home Monday, April 3 against the Pirates. Also mark July 6-9 down on your calender when we take on the sCrUBS at Miller Park!

And in case you forgot, Dayn Perry of FoxSports picks the Crew as the '06 NL Wildcard.

NL wild card — Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers haven't had a winning season since 1992 and haven't made the postseason in almost a quarter century. That's about to end. They'll need a healthy Ben Sheets to make this prediction come true, but they can already bank on full seasons from uber-prospects Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder, and shortstop J.J. Hardy, who seemed to find his stroke in the second half, could emerge as one of the best shortstops in the NL. GM Doug Melvin, one of the most underrated execs in the game, can trade Lyle Overbay for pitching if need be, and the bullpen figures to be quite strong. Also, the Brewers last season ranked sixth in the 16-team NL in starters' ERA, and that's with only 156.2 innings from Sheets. Believe it: Milwaukee will be in the playoffs in 2006.

This is our year!

ok Nick, you're right, we'll probably be the NL version of the Devil Rays this year..so I guess that means you'll have no reason to come into the thread and rain on our parade anymore, since we'll obviously suck and are only a threat to Cincinatti to take last place this year, so see ya in June when the Twins come to Milwaukee and kick our asses like they did(n't) last year.

Unless that says something more about the Yankees than it does about the D'Rays and Brewers.

By the way, I obviously know that you can't really tell anything about one 3 game series in July, Im just trying to fire up the troops.

Oh, and Nick, perhaps I dont know the situation behind the sig, but if you are quoting Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction (like I said, I dont know, maybe you arent) then it's "I'm a mushroom cloud layin mutherfucker, mutherfucker" not "droppin"

The scene goes:

You're gettin' ready to blow? I'm a mushroom-cloud-layin' motherfucker! Every time myfingers touch brain I'm "SUPERFLY T.N.T," I'm the "GUNS OF NAVARONE."

We will get that all worked out in the next few weeks...

Spring training has started, as long as Sheets stays healthy, Capuano has a repeat of last year, Ohka can improve at Miller Park, and we can get a solid 5th started (Bush or Helling, more likely to be Bush), we have a decent chance to still be playing in October.

Good performances from our young infield, along with Lee and Jenkins being hot together this year wouldn't help either...

Miller Park you mean?

And do share.

trent2302
04-09-2006, 09:33 AM
I have to agree- I love Miller Park. It has had its share of problems, but I think it is an excellent place to watch a ballgame. I've sat in three sections, and they all provided great views of the game- even the bleachers, which I hated at County Stadium- they're very nice.

The fact is, Milwaukee is a great baseball town, and I think they could be a story like the Packers, who went through a long drought before their period of prosperity.

Doug Melvin knows what he's doing- he knew eventually that Overbay would have to go- Prince Fielder needed to play and experience the growing pains of a full rookie season, and look who he got for him- David Bush, who, even if he doesn't pitch lights-out every time, is still better than the fifth starters last year. (Santos, anyone?).

They also got Gabe Gross, and I think he's the heir apparent to any one of the outfield spots.

The thing I love? All these years, we heard about how good these guys were on the farm, and now, they're all here at the same time, looking like the real thing.

trent2302
04-09-2006, 09:38 AM
I also have to say that I think I'm following this season more closely than I have for a long time. I'm saving the recaps of the Brewer games on MLB.com, because they give the box and the story of the game, and if you haven't seen it, ESPN.com's GameCast is awesome this year, just in case you want to follow a game you aren't able to watch or listen to. This year they added a feature where a little ball comes out of the pitcher's mound and when it's hit in play, the ball moves out to where it was actually hit. It's pretty cool, and I followed a game yesterday (Tampa Bay-Toronto) that I normally wouldn't have.

Very well put! One thing I really like about it is how the games never attract a very large crowd. You can decide the day of that you want to go to the game and get tickets just about anywhere.

Our pitching should become even stronger once Sheets returns, assuming that he can stay healthy. I've been extremely impressed with how our relief is playing too. Davis struggled early, but the relief came in and shut them down. Fielder had a shaky start, but he is now showing some real potential!

And as for the gamecasts, I still like MLB.com's better. Living down in Illinois, I can't get games on the radio or TV, unless they are playing the Cubs, so I went out and bought MLB radio. Used it for every game so far, I love being able to here Uecker.

Doug Davis better throw a shutout.I thought that after the Brewers lost their first game we decided that this thread should not be posted in for the rest of the year. We just need to face the fact that the Brewers will not win again for the rest of the year.

I watched that game last night and when it was over I felt completely deflated. Gabe Gross with a great PH 3-Run Homer and Dave Bush pitching well again. Then the doors fell off, and no thanks to the 1st base empire as well. Then Prince Fielder hits one that is gone in most parks but hits the top of the fence in Right Center and of course it only scores one run and we lose by one....AHHHHH it was so frustrating.. Off to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the game tonight, so at least I'll have wings and beer.

Doug Davis is a bust. I'm trading him.

Bases are loaded right now, but I still want him to peg Adam Everrett. That guy looks like such an L-7 WEENIE. He looks like the guy from Road Trip and The New Guy.

Cleary you didnt see him make every start for the better part of 4 years (2001-2004). Baseball fans have such short memories sometimes.

Cal Ripken could have pulled a hammy and missed two months after he broke Gehrigs record and fans would have been pissing and moaning about him always being hurt.

Sheets had one injury, a torn muscle in his back at the end of 2005, that he rushed back from in early 2006 which set him back some in 2006. Get off of him, he's actually pretty durable.

1) With the exception of us playing the Dodgers and Marlins and you playing the Braves and Padres, we've basically had the same schedule. Your schedule really hasn't been much, if at all, tougher than ours. Plus, we're 17-8 against the central versus your 10-13.

2) The Brewers have had quite a few games that have been standing room only. Many of those were when we were playing teams other than the Cubs.

3) If you call me a bandwagon fan again, we are going to have a big problem. I've been a loyal follower since I moved to the Milwaukee area almost 16 years ago. I've been going to games since I was 4 years old and have always stood by them, even in 2002 when we lost 106 games. So don't you dare say the only reason I am so excited is because we're finally doing well.

So don't you dare say the only reason I am so excited is because we're finally doing well.

im not necessarily saying you are not a fan, im positive that by the posts of yours that ive read that you are in fact a die hard fan, but a lot of the small market teams only have fans that come out when they win (cough cough white sox) and dont do anything when they lose, however each team does have its fair share of loyal fans, by the way which games were standing room only for the brewers? because i find it hard that that big of a stadium could be fully sold out

Thanks for noticing that I do loyally support my home team. :thumbsup

I will admit, there are many fans that do start showing up once a team starts winning. Just look at the attendances over the past few years, especially compared to this year. As a Cubs fan, you know as well as anybody that it is difficult to be a loyal fan when you are constantly facing struggles, whether it be injuries, shitty seasons, or just plain bad luck. I would say that the Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox are the only teams that consistently have strong, loyal followings, and I give you guys credit for that (along with maybe a joke or two :D). But it is fun to see how the hometown reacts when their team that has been struggling for years is finally starting to take shape. Milwaukee is reaching that point and many people are really starting to support this team. Granted it would've been nice to have some people alongside me 5 years ago...

Miller Park has a capacity just under 42,000. Many of the weekend games have had attendances very close to, if not above that. While it is still difficult to get a good turnout during the week, it is nice to see the stadium full on the weekend. I would go to weekday games myself, but going to school down in Evanston (Cubs territory, :shudder) makes it nearly impossible.

I wrote this quickly because I need to get back to studying. Hope it makes some kind of sense.

Go Brewers. :cool :thumbsup

Brewers have played 8 home games where they have had more than 40,000 fans attend.

At all times 60% of the losers at Wrigley are there for the party scene than they are for the game. They arent "real fans" in the sense that they are at all invested in the team or the game. They are there to party and get drunk and be obnoxious like most Cubs fans.

Admittedly, the Brewers do not have those types of fans. We also do not have our own television station seen around the US.

82% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

46% of all sports fans know that.

You're right, that number, 60% was pulled directly from the total percentage of douchebag losers who live in Chicago. Im sure it doesnt directly translate to Cubs fans at Wrigley field at all times, as some Chicago fans are Sox fans, but for the sake of this argument, it'll have to do.

so uh, how many all stars do you think the crew will have this year.

I'm thinking it'll be hardy, cappy, coco, and the suppan. Jenkins is playing like one but i'm not sure if he'd make it.

my dad brother and i are heading out to philly next week to check out that little stretch, i'm pumped to see their stadium and for the brewers to get yet another sweep.

attendance is up about 6,000 people per game this season as compared to last year, yes people are coming out of their shells on this team it happens everywhere when teams start performing better, i'd be there win lose or draw though i love that team.

And we even gave the Cubs a chance to gain a little ground on us. Oh well, I'm not crying about it.

Wouldn't it be great if both our teams became dominant over the next several years and turned into a big rivalry.

It'll never be as big as Cards/Cubs. Those two teams just hate eachother - or at least their fans do. Its up there with Yanks/Sox and Dodgers/Giants.

As long as we always came out on top. Sure, I'd be cool with it.

Geez what's with all the Cubs fans coming in here and being obnoxious?? If y'all did that to our thread people would flip.

You guys are on FIRE right now! And as frustrating as that is, I'd much rather have it be you than the Cards or the Astros :D

Gotta give props where they're deserved.

I was at a formal, so this was the first game all season I wasn't able to follow.

We still have the best record in the league and a 7.0 game lead in the central.

im willing to say you guys will probably win this division this year, the cubs have 0 life as a team, cant hit, and have no bullpen, the brewers actually look like a baseball team that plays the game the right way, something i could only wish the cubs could ever do

Hey y'all,

I must say, it is nice to see them rockin'. This next month is going to be huge in telling us if they're for real.

25-11 is great. Some might say they beat up on weak teams, but hey, last year and most years they had trouble against Pittsburgh, etc., so it's good that they're winning against them this year.

I just think they're solid up and down the roster. Yost is using a lot of players, but I think it's good to have everyone fresh and contributing- kind of reminds me of the '05 White Sox.

Yes, there are fans who only show up at the park when the team is winning. How can anyone blame them? Are you going to tell me you're going to shell out at least $25 apiece for good seats, the money it costs to park, not to mention the money to feed yourself and quench your thirst when the team sucks? I'm not going to shell out all that when there's a lousy product on the field.

Now that there's a chance that I'm going to see a competitive team on the field, yes, I would consider going and spending that money.

5 in 125 ab, that's about 20-25 in a full season. JJ has always projected to hit for good power as a SS because of the way he swings.

Oh. I'm just going by what i'm hearing from Chris Wheeler (Phills commentary) who said he hit "5 homeruns last year." So I thought, "wow, thats improvement." I wasn't aware of his situation last year. Sorry that i don't follow the Brewers like you.
