new season, new thread. even though this will probably get lost and 3 more threads will be started before the season begins. but it's never too early to start talking football. 3 months till opening week.
personally, and call me a homer if you will, but i think my boys have a shot this year. hell, who doesn't have a shot in the nfc?
let the overanalysis and trash-talking begin.

I know its going to be a battle for 2nd in the AFC East but I can't WAIT to see the development of this team. It's so nice actually looking forward to the season rather than dreading it.

cowboys could have won the superbowl last year if romo didn't fuck up the snap, or if his kick threw a decent block for him to run it in. anyway, while they still have a good team i don't think they will make it there w/ the new coaching staff and a new system and all. doesn't help them that they play in the toughest division in the NFC. i like romo a lot though; reminds me of a young favre the way he loves the game and always has a smile

true, but still not that tough. people keep forgetting that the eagles weren't doing that great last year before mcnabb went down. the giants are so inconsistent it's crazy. and the skins are, well, the skins. but they usually all beat the crap out of each other anyways, so if we can go 4-2, 3-3 in the division, i'll be happy.

yeah i'm a packers fan and i actually have good expectations for this year. even though our offense looks like shit, we're really built up or defesne and we have premier players at each level. the D has improved in McCarthy's first year and should be even better next year. we had a ton of sacks (only diego, baltimore, and miami had more), a ton of INTs (only baltimore and chicago had more), and the 4th best 3rd down conversion percentage. only problem was that we gave up big plays at the wrong times which led to TDs. if we can get a clamp on that i think we will have one of the best defenses this year

i agree with what you say, and the cowboys def. have the best team in that division. i just think the new system there will take a little while to start working on gameday.

Word is Randy Moss is already half-assing it at workouts. Everyone's going to be all over the Pats bandwagon and thinking they already have the trophy (which I love, by the way), and the Colts are going to repeat.

I'm predicting a 10-6 season and a wild card spot for the Steelers. People say they were a disappointment last season, but they finished 6-2. This is going to be a breakout year for Santonio Holmes. His improvement from the beginning to the end of last season was astonishing. Aside from his intensity and entertainment value, we're not going to miss Joey Porter. Haggans and Foote are more than sufficient, plus Woodley has looked like a beast in practices thus far. Timmons has been hurt on and off since the draft, but once he gets healthy, I think he's going to be a monster.
Edit: And since someone brought them up, I'm predicting the Browns will go 3-13.

Roethlisberger has been at his best his entire career while running the no huddle offense. I have no idea why they didn't do it more, but Tomlin is setting him loose and letting him do it as much as he wants. I think it's going to make a major difference in his performance this year. I do agree that they have to do a better job of establishing the running game than they did last year. Hopefully Kevan Barlow can be more effective than Najeh Davenport.

Bears have one of the hardest schedules in the league this year. The problem is, 3 games on the schedule actually weigh the entire schedule down to a low percentage to be called 2nd easiest. Which is hilarious. Raiders, Lions, Lions. That's an 8-40 record sucking down. Which is 32 games in the lose column.
So what's so hard about the Bears schedule then? They play 7 to 8 teams that have the potential to get hot and become SUPER BOWL contenders this year, not to mention 3 to start the season:
Week 1 - @ San Diego
Week 2 - Kansas City
Week 3 - Dallas
Week 7 - @ Philly
Week 11 - @ Seattle
Week 12 - Denver
Week 13 - NY Giants
Week 17 - NO Saints
Redskins (week 14) have a chance at being good as well. So of their remaining 7 games on the schedule, they have 6 which are unchangeable division games, and ONE easy game...against the Raiders.
10 rotating teams on schedule, 9 of them tough games. This year couldn't be any more brutal for the Bears.

What did he do the last time he got into the playoffs? He was two botched field goals away from leading his team to the conference championship game. Get off his ass. This year's Jets team wasn't even good, they weren't even supposed to make it to the playoffs, Chad wasn't even supposed to finish half a season.

i'm not on his ass the way you are on mine. all i said was he throws like a sissy: meaning he can't throw the ball hard or deep. this is all i said, and its true. i didn't say he was a bad qb or couldn't win. so how about you just stop trying to cover up his weaknesses and accept it when people acknowledge them

so you agree that he throws like a sissy?
and if you want some players that the pats have built up here you go:
Asante Samuel- lead the NFL in INTs last year and has been a patriot his entire career.
Richard Seymour: regarded as one of the best 3-4 ends in the league, has been a pat his whole career
Teddy Bruschi: been a pat his whole career, and i don't need to say anything about his accomplishments
Mike Vrabel: wasn't a starting LB till he went to the pats and he's nasty
oh and also their entire starting offensive line

Look I'm not saying the Pats are bad, they obviously aren't, I'm just saying it's a whole lot more fulfilling when you build up a team rather than trade for your talent. Maybe it's because I'm a Jets fan and I've lived through a complete breakdown, house cleaning, and rebuild. Right now we're in year 2 and I feel like we already won a championship. Are we going to get any further this year than last? Probably not. But in this stage of rebuilding, it's all about progress.

hey i agree w/ you on the rebuilding stuff because the packers are doing the same thing now. but you can't say the pats haven't built up anyone because all those guys on the defense i just listed will still be there. they added a ton of WRs this year because all of their receivers last year were shitty as hell. thats all they added, plus one more LB because some of their guys are getting old. and their system did work last year. they were the superbowl champs up until the second half of the AFC championship game

hey i agree w/ you on the rebuilding stuff because the packers are doing the same thing now. but you can't say the pats haven't built up anyone because all those guys on the defense i just listed will still be there. they added a ton of WRs this year because all of their receivers last year were shitty as hell. thats all they added, plus one more LB because some of their guys are getting old. and their system did work last year. they were the superbowl champs up until the second half of the AFC championship game
Correction: Until the refs decided to hand it to Indy. Let's make sure we have that one straight :)
Or, until we realized that we were fucked by having any kind of play rely on Caldwell. :lol
Either one.....

To be fair, he didn't really lead his team to the playoffs...they made it there because other teams lost when they really shouldn't have.
Not to mention, youre in CT and a Jets fan. Horrible. Shame on you.
1. Uh, we had tiebreakers throughout the Wild Card race, and we won when we needed to. We didn't need anyone's help to get into the playoffs.
2. So if you moved to Detroit you'd have to be a Lions fan or else you'd be a disgrace too right? You make no sense. How do you know where I was born and raised? I was unaware thats what our location on here was supposed to be.

eeaaasy there. i didn't make any statements, just asked if you were in fact from jersey. and if we use your logic for moss and thomas, then any team that picks up a player for a position that they need, then they are automatically buying their way to success. pretty lame buddy, i'm pretty sure you are only saying these things b/c you're a jets fan and want to bitch about the pats being the best team this year.

1. Its not like the Jets were going to make the playoffs regardless. They won, but because others lost they made it in. It wasn't the Jets winning alone that got them in the playoffs.
2. So you were born and raised in NJ? If so, I stand corrected. Not to mention, the "location" thing is always a running joke to me...Im well aware that someone can live in a city but be born somewhere else (Im in baltimore, but I'm a Pats fan). Breathe...it was just a comment.

Who besides Brady and Maroney have the Pats actually bred and built up? If people like their team winning because they trade for success, cool. But I prefer watching my team create the success. It lasts alot longer and its alot more fun to experience.
Orly? Three Super Bowls this decade disagree.
And do the names Seymore, Wilfork, Bruschi, Samuel, Light, Branch, Law, McGinest mean anything to you? Those are just quality players off the top of my head that the Pats have drafted that helped them to those rings this decade. You can't afford to pay every stud you draft in the NFL because of the cap, so some of those players get away. But to act like free agency and trades are the reason for New England's success is just flat wrong. Even if it was, who cares. Those are just as much part of a GM's job as drafting is.
You just sound like a bitter Jets fan. And this is coming from a bitter Miami fan.

Yea, and that didn't work out last year, so what do they do? Buy some more talent.
Wait a minute... how did your Jets acquire Thomas Jones? Ohhhh yeah, they traded for him. And their running back before him? Curtis Martin? That's right, they signed him. And their top receiver, Santana Moss? Another trade. Your defensive end, Kimo Von Oelhoeffen? Another free agent. I guess you're going to be pretty unfulfilled this season while the Jets are winning with so many players they didn't develop themselves.

Those three all have the potential imo. Eli could live up to his potential, and the team has serious talent if they'd get their head out of their ass and stop whining.
I know everyone is down on McNabb for some reason, God knows why, as if Garcia was the only reason they were any good. But believe me, when he's healthy there isn't a QB in the NFC that even comes close. Bulger and Brees are his only competition.

McNabb has already practiced with the team well, well ahead of schedule and reports are that he is in the best shape of his life. He seems very hungry for a superbowl now that the years are starting to creep up on him. However, in the end, if the Eagles win a superbowl, it will be because of Brian Westbrook and the offensive line (which us Eagles fans are very, very excited about).

The Cincinnati Bengals. They're going to the playoffs, and have a good shot at a bye. Once you get to the playoffs, the AFC is a crapshoot though since the AFC is loaded with the Colts, Chargers, Patriots, and other "sleepers" (if you could even call them that - Ravens, Steelers, Chiefs, mayyybe the Dolphins). Defense of their chances at grabbing one of the two byes.
Schedule
1: Ravens (MNF)
2: @ Browns
3: @ Seahawks
4: Patriots (MNF)
BYE Week
5: @ Chiefs
6: Jets
7: Steelers
8: @ Bills
9: @ Ravens
10: Cardinals
11: Titans
12: @ Steelers
13: Rams
14: @ 49ers
15: Browns
16: @ Dolphins
Assuming (at worst) they split with the Ravens and Steelers, the only games I wouldnt expect them to win is Seattle (tough place to play), the Patriots, and maybe the Titans (all on Young) and Dolphins (week 17, so who knows what team will show up for that game). As a result, I expect the Bengals to be at least 10-6, and maybe as good as 13-3.
There just aren't nearly as many tough games on the schedule as there were last year, and they finished 8-8 playing like garbage. That happened despite: losing 1 game to TB on a veryyyy questionable roughing call, lost to P'burgh on a missed 40 yrd field goal, lost something like a 24 pt lead to the Chargers, lost a chance to beat the Broncos bc of a missed PAT with seconds left.
Of course, only time will tell. I expect less of the field issues and better play compared to last year. Super Bowl champs... I dont know about that. But a contender, I think so...

So assuming they win roughly half of those tough games, which they are capable of doing, that still puts them somewhere between 12-4 and 10-6, which puts them in the playoffs for sure. In fact, the only game I dont see them being favored in is vs. New England, Baltimore (away) and Seattle (and thats only because its in Seattle). If the Bengals lose 6 games or more this year, I will consider it a very underachieving season to say the least.

The Bengals aren't even the best team in Ohio.

If the Bengals lose 6 games or more this year, I will consider it a very underachieving season to say the least.
as crazy as it sounds, 10-6 might barely make the playoffs in the afc. but i think the bengals have a good chance of winning their division. it'll be tough, though. cause i don't expect pittsburgh to have a season like last year and the ravens will be tough as well. that'll be a fun division to watch.

Finishing 12-4 is about the best possible situation for Cinci. The Bengals are at best the fifth best team in the AFC. They've got a tough schedule and to say they have a "good shot" at a bye just isn't true.

It is going to be a crazy season to watch this year. However I think Pittsburgh will be a little lackluster what with a new coach and players that have been less than excited to play for them this year. Of course it is the steelers so there is no easy way of winning a game with them on the opposite side of the field

Definitely. The AFC North is just brutal. You can make a strong argument for the Ravens, Bengals, or Steelers winning the division. 10-6 is a reasonable expectation for the Bengals. I don't see them finishing any better than 11-5 at best.

I'm not saying they are a shoe-in, cause there is no such thing as a shoe-in in the NFL. But I think my New England Patriots are gonna have quite a year. As long as they can find rhythm in their offense. Defense will have same players from last year. We get Seau back who before his injury was leading the team in tackles. He was owning. But the injury hurt. Harrison also has to play healthy. Thomas is great! :thumbsup
It's all how Brady will connect with Stallworth and Moss. He needs to find out what they are gonna be like for him. Cause then he has his normal Tight Ends and decent receivers in Wes Welker, Kelley Washington, Gaffney, and "Deer Eyes" Caldwell.

i think one thing that will help my 49ers is a weak schedule. Smith has decent recievers to throw too (Jackson, that man named Ashley and Vernon Davis), the defense is way better. Assuming the team can gel and we don't get the injury bug too bad, we are hopefully in good shape.

i tend to agree with you...I had forgotten that they got Ashley Lelie, he had a decent year with the falcons last year, but vick seemed to always forget about his receivers other than alge crumpler....Lelie needs to return to his denver days. I agree. 99% sounds about right. I mean, I'm an asshole New England/Boston fan, I know that, I understand that, I go with that. However, if I think that my team actually has a chance to be the best, I'll say it....I won't just go into every single season claiming that NE is going to be the best unless I TRULY think that.
I mentioned to him that I think the cowboys are going to be the best in the NFC East, and he pretty much called me an idiot, because CLEARLY the Eagles are going to be at the Super Bowl, so there's no way Dallas could be the best in the Division. Honestly, I think I like seeing the Eagles lose as much as I like seeing the Patriots win. Maybe not quite, but it's damn close, because I know that if Philly fans are really upset/sad, then I'm having a great day.

:lol the O's are still an okay team to cheer for. They have never really had many asshole players or whatever (excpet for Sosa), so I don't think anyone really hates them.
I <3 games at Camden Yards. And YES! Happy 1k to you!

Arizona = the Orioles of the NFL.
Nah, the Orioles actually had glory years and have been good at some points.
The Cardinals haven't been good since 1948. Let me repeat that again: 59 years. They've been above .500 about once in the past 25 years, with Jake the Snake in '98.
The Orioles may be back someday, the Cardinals will always be bad. Always. And so will the Lions (who coincidentally haven't been good since 1958).

all right, enough baseball.
let's get crazy and do 3-months-before-the-season playoff predictions.
nfc:
north: bears
east: cowboys
south: saints
west: seahawks
wildcard: eagles and panthers
afc:
north: ravens
east: pats
south: colts
west: chargers
wildcard: jets and titans

those picks are much too safe, but i tend to agree with most of them...though i think the saints wont have as good of a year this time around I would switch the panthers and saints

i would probably take the titans out as well and put the bengals in their spot

yeah, i thought about that one. i just really like the saints last year. i know they've been the joke of the league forever, but they have a decent team. and the panthers always choke.
and the titans was just for shits. i don't think they'll do it, but you never know. bengals are right up there, though.

i'd also like to add that i really didn't want to pick the bears, cause i don't think they'd make the playoffs if they were in any other division. they have a pretty rough schedule and i think the losses on d might hurt them. and then there's the whole grossman being the qb thing.

NFC:
North: Bearss, Favre is really the only conceivable competition
East: Most difficult one....if McNabb is healthy, Philly.
South: Saints, I think Bush, Brees, and Colston are only going to get better.
West: 49ers...:eek
Wilds: Panthers and Cowboys
AFC:
North: Benglas Rulz...ratbirds n tha piss&shits ain't gottit...no lie dawgs beat it
East: Pats...go Pennington though.
South: Colts
West: Chargers
Wilds: Chiefs and Jags

Which ones? They are getting back Mike Brown and Tommie Harris...and they added Archuleta.
The only losses are potential ones: Briggs being a bitch, and to a much lesser extent, Alex Brown being a whiner because a rook took his starting job.

Let's be honest. The Bears are getting Mike Brown back for two games before he tears his entire body.

Don't worry, last year was just an unfortunate freak injury. Kinda like Rex for 3 years.
Man...after MB went down the defense took such a step back it's not even funny. When Harris went down, they weren't the same unit at all.

Stranger things have happened...like the Saints just last year.
I'll be rooting for Chad-o though.

yea their run game may be a little better than last year but their offense seriously needs help. I mean they couldn't even score against the Colts in a home playoff game. They will be tough as always with that defense but I really think the Bengals can get the division win. That is if we play to potential.
