For all those of you who follow football over here and want to discuss goings on with your team and debate the upcoming season. Feel free to talk about anything football related on this side of the pond.
I'll start by saying that Tevez has rejected a move to Inter Milan because he refused to meet their deadline to sign a deal, so a potential move to Arsenal may be back on the cards :multi

Darren Bent just signed with Tottenham, that should be an interesting move because they will now have 4 legit strikers. I easily could seen them top 4 in EPL. We'll see.

I'm not so sure, being an Arsenal fan I'm ridiculously biased when it comes to all things Tottenham but I honestly think that Bent is overrated and overpriced. Although I will admit I'm slightly more apprehensive about Spurs competing with us this season than usual.

Haha yeah my Fifa 07 Help thread was turning into this so I like the thread...and I Love Manchester United...got it done this year in the EPL but not in anything else...they will still be stacked going into the 2007-2008 season. With Arsenal losing Henry they should take both of those games in payback for this past season. Also, I am already planning a trip to go see the best team in the world (Man United) sometime in march of 08!! I can't wait, I have never been to England!

Seems theres a lot of Spurs fans out there unfortunately. And to all you Arsenal doubters, just you wait and see, we will manage fine without Henry, I mean we managed last season for the most part without him, and even then he wasn't anywhere near top form at any point. As soon as we sign a suitable replacement a Champions League place will be ours no problem.

I'm not a Spurs fan by any means - just been interested in their improvement last season, that's all and hope that it's not just a one year thing. :) I don't really follow any team with a passion, just keen on the game itself.

Momo just signed on for another 4 year, and we're on the brink of signing Torres for just under 27m pound. Expect big things from the Reds this year.
Also: Carlos Tevez rejected Inter's bid for him, claiming he wants to stay in the EPL. Arsenal? LFC? Should be interesting to see where he goes after the end of Copa America.

Half of our first team isn't even playing, we're not even in the CONMEBOL and are invitees along with Mexico for the tournament.
Donovan, Twellman, among the U.S.'s other best players aren't competing so it isn't expected that we do well.
Winning the Gold Cup was a huge accomplishment for us being that it is our confederation's cup, not another continent's.

Well its a bit unfair to compare really with the Premiership being one of, if not the greatest league in the world, because the MLS has had to deal with the fact that football just isn't as popular in America. As it grows in popularity (which Beckham hopes his move will lead to, though I'm skeptical) then people will become more involved and more talent will come through and the league will start to produce better sides and better football.

you can only say that cause you live in england. im totally allowed to complain about the crap football here in the states. of course i dont expect it to be as good as the premier league, and i truly value how much it has grown here since i started playing back in 1985. i can still totally be jealous of the quality football and great environment when watching games that you have and we will most likely never have.

I think we are very hypocritical in this sense in that we expect Americans to think football is the greatest sport in the world (which it is but thats another argument entirely:p) but rarely give American sports the chance. I for one would love to appreciate American sports more but don't really have the oppurtunity to as I don't have Sky Sports, or should I say I'm not allowed to have Sky Sports because I'd never do any school work.

The U.S. could easily be a world power in soccer/football if all of our citizens were devoted to the sport.
Look at Brazil for example, over 180 million people live there, and the only sport they really play is soccer, so of course they are going to have a handful of amazing players. Whereas in America the majority of the population would rather play other, more popular (in the U.S.) sports such as baseball or American Football or basketball.
I'm sure if we looked through our entire population of over 300 million people, we could field a pretty damn good squad.
Also, back on topic, Torres will lead the EPL in goals this coming season.
EDIT: I was mistaken earlier, Twellman DID play, as well as Johnson, but those were the only 2 first team U.S. players that played against Argentina's top squad.

Everyone I know are Arsenal fans. I think they became the "cool" team to like for people just getting into the sport or that don't know much about it, just as Manchester United was about 5 years ago when they had Beckham. When I ask most of my friends why they like Arsenal it was the same answer "I like Henry but now I don't want to just drop Arsenal as my team now that he left." This was the same response I got from some people that liked Man United when Beckham was there. I happen to love Manchester United because I love the history of the team.
....and because when I first got into the sport Beckham was my favorite player haha.

Yeah I doubt Torres will have what it takes in his first year. But I also think Drogba has no shot at it this year, Ballack and Shevchenko are absolute clowns, and Lampard is slipping as well. He needs more support to be able to do it, and watch for Kalou to step into the forefront of Chelsea's attack this year.
I also don't see Van Persie even leading Arsenal in scoring this year... I'm more intrigued by Theo Walcott's talent and expect him to do great things filling in for Henry, unless of course they pick up Tevez.
If Tevez were to come to a big club I think he could lead the EPL in scoring, he's already made it clear his wishes are to remain in the Barclay's.
There's a decent chance he end up at LFC as well, since he's spending a good amount of time with Javier Mascherano now for the Copa America.

Bergkamp was the man for me, just complete quality throughout his career and completely loyal to Arsenal. Although he wasn't the reason I got into Arsenal (that was more of a family thing). Yeah but Arsenal's 49 game unbeaten run in the league, and the football they played in it really helped boost their popularity I think.

I think that Tevez is a good candidate for top goalscorer, depending where he ends up. I can't see him going to Anfield if Torres is signed though as it leaves less room for Kuyt who I believe to be quality, and two big names may not necessarily be a good thing. As for Walcott I think his development as a top class player might be stunted slightly by the loss of Henry as he no doubt influenced and helped him last season. Also Kalou is a good point too, ah so much to look foward to, can't wait for the season to start again (for playing reasons as well)

I have found my new home thread on Ants!!! :bounce
Nice to see people chatting it up over some soccer/futbol. I will toss my alligence behind ManU, only because, like one person stated earlier, when I first found the EPL over 15 years ago, I saw a ManU game and have followed them ever since. I love Ronaldo. He is an arrogent dick, just like Rooney, but they can both play. If you have the knads to back it up, I guess you be a arse on the pitch.
I do think that Aresenal will be a solid team this year, even without Henry. He didn't play that much this year with the team and the still finished in the top 4 of the EPL, finished runner up to Chelsea in the Carling Cup, and made the R. of 16 in Champs League. They are a young, and potentially dangerous, team.
I do like that no Chelsea supporters have chimed in yet. Let's keep it that way. :D

What I saw of Arsenal last year impressed me. They were able to contend on several fronts with a diminished squad. Tons of injuries, young players, lots of travel. I think only a few games this year that I saw did I think that Arsenal was playing for the 0-0 tie.
With some added time off, hopefully they can come out fast this season and give the Red Devils and Blues something worry about. And don't forget about LFC. They seem to be loading up for a huge push this year.

I'd watch out for Newcastle as well, they've added a number of talented players and are being taken over by a wealthy new owner so more is sure to come. It looks as though Owen might be staying a Toon as well.
It should be a good season and I hope the Reds can avenge for the unfortunate UCL final this past tournament.
Grouty: I believe Crouch to be a more valuable asset than Kuyt right now, but I do expect Kuyt to step into form this coming year similar to Drogba at Chelsea.

I am not so sure about Newcastle. They seem to enter every season as 'This is going to be the turn around year.' It never happens. Maybe with some new blood at Toon it will change, with the signing of Allardyce being huge, but I am still skepticle.

They also signed Viduka, Barton, and have a healthy Owen (hopefully for them) returning. If they can hang on to Owen and keep him healthy I expect them to place top 7 and return to European competition.
As a Liverpool fan I dislike Everton and hope they do poorly, but I do love Tim Howard so I'd like to see him do well. Contradictory I know, but I don't see them pressing the big 4 anyway.
Tottenham, Newcastle, and Manc City will be the most threatening teams to the big 4 this season, IMO of course.

The chips are in Newcastles favor for sure, let's just see what they do with them. A healthy Owen would be very helpful this season. He should open up lots of chances for the rest of the team.
I should have known that you wouldn't give Everton much chance. :lol I was impressed at how well they played through out the season. They had chances in every match and that is all you can ask for.
I agree with you about Newcastle and Spurs challenging for a top 7 spot, but I not so sure about City. Not just because I am a ManU fan, but because they looked horrible last season. Newcaslte are indeed looking considerably better, with Allardyce being the main reason for that. Although I agree with the person who said that it seems that Newcastle always seemed to be hyped up to a point where they fail to deliver.
Talking of Allardyce reminds me that I think Bolton won't be the force they have been in previous seasons. I reckon Arsenals "bogey" team could well be Newcastle this year rather than Bolton. Or simply put it is whoever Allardyce is managing.
I think that top 4 will be Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool (not in that order) with the UEFA Cup spots going to Tottenham, Newcastle, and maybe Reading or Everton.

s we have already discussed, I think it takes imports a year to get used to the pace and toughness of the Prem. I am expecting good things from Kuyt for example just because he knows the deal. With that said, I also think it comes down to tactics as well. Again using Kuyt as an example, Rafa never really let him settle in the box to poach goals, he played way too far up into the midfield for my liking.
I think with the style Arse use, Huntelaar could be a great signing

absolutely made up about Torres signing for us. I still contend we need some better production out of our midfield, but i would attribute much of last seasons por form to just being plain tired after the world cup. who knows haha
oh did you guys see Rafa as listed Heinze as one of his targets:violent:violent:violent
oh and to add on the anti chelsea feeling
fuck off chelsea fc
you aint got no history
5 big cups and 18 leagues
now thats what we call history:D:D
Torres is literally a signature away, we are likely going to send Garcia back in a separate deal.
No I didn't see that about Heinze, he sucks though... Where did you read that?
And YES! Chelsea blows! Geremi blew the semi's for them in Europe against us :lol
Rob, what do you think of the new Away and Euro/3rd strips?
Actually, I really really love them, I like the black Euro's better but those aren't available yet to buy for some reason. I'm thinking I'm gonna buy a new away Torres 9 once he's announced though.

I'm still undecided on Arsenal's new away kit. On one hand I like the style and design but on the other hand its predominantly white which is the main colour of the scum of the earth, Tottenham.

Read about the heinze on one of the liverpool forums. i would be soooo pissed. we dont want any scum in our squad!
as for the kit, i am for sure getting the black one when they are released. i am debating between a carra or torres. i think the away torres 9 would look great!
i am gutted about luis going the other way. i loed the lil bastard haha. but if it means we get torres, i can cope with that

I'm not too distraught over Luis going, he's getting up in age and isn't overly consistant for us.

Hmm I'm skeptical to be honest. Until its released officially I tend not to believe rumoured kits. I didn't realise they were releasing one actually. If it is real I'm not exactly sure what I think, though maybe they are deliberately taking colours from rivals kits for our away and third kits for a laugh.
(Having said that Chelseas new away kit is just a laugh a minute :lol)

Voronin? I'm not huge on him, but he could help I guess.
I just don't really think much of the Bundesliga or players that come from there.
I rank it something like this...
1. EPL
2. La Liga
3.Serie A
4. Eredivisie
4.25 Bundesliga
etc. Munich is really the only good team in that league I believe, and they didn't even make it back to CL play this year... I'll take PSV and Ajax over them any day.

so I've always wondered, if you're american, how did you get into following the premier league and football in general? I know lots of people that sit down and watch the game and appreciate it, but few that follow it with such passion and can actually talk about the players.
Personally, I've been playing since I was 4. I really just appreciate a good match, no matter who is playing, but my allegience falls with Liverpool mainly because of my teenage crush on Michael Owen.

England wasn't talented enough up top to succeed on a national level. They couldn't compete with players like Toni, Totti, Del Piero, Villa, Torres, Zlatan, Henry, Trezeguet, among others. Rooney is good, but he is still young. They've been struggling in Euro 08 qualification as well.
As much as I love him and hate to say it, it's a pity when Crouchie is your leading scorer on the national level... :shrug
I think Spain is a team with a lot of amazing young talent and will be on top soon, with France also close behind.
Also, is anyone else extremely satisfied by the fact that Shevchenko was amazing in Milan, blew it in the final vs LFC, came to London, and did awfully in the EPL?

I was in England studying abroad and I got to one EPL game, it was Aston Villa vs Arsenal at Villa Park when Arsenal won 1-0. Let me tell you, I was more excited watching an LFC match at a pub then at the Villa game. Arsenal wasn't really impressive either, but Henry was hurt at the time.

I'm a Chelsea supporter. Right now things are looking pretty bleak. I can't imagine what Abramovich could be thinking about getting rid of Mourinho.
I actually didn't think Shevchenko was that bad. You could tell he was a little off with his teammates but he is incredibly creative. Half his passes didn't find their man because no one saw what he did. That said, he wasn't worth the what 60 million? But I think he could be a great second to Drogba. Drogba draws the attention and has the flair, but Shevchenko can play just behind him and provide support.
Chelsea's real problem was the makeshift back four and the weak play of Lampard and Ballack. The Gallas move really hurt this year and Mourinho should have played Germi more at right back.
As for MLS, I think the problem is college soccer. The college game isn't football it's what most Americans think football is- soccer. All the creativity is drained, the game is boring, defensive , and completely useless. I watched UK and IU twice (IU is one of the "best" teams in the country) and it was like watching Liverpool and Chelsea in the champions league.

Hargreaves completed his move to Man U. I think it's a great move for them. It should help their back line to have a little support deep in the midfield. It's probably a little more than he's worth as an individual but it's a smart move.

Sorry but I don't think he's as quality as most people say. Not so shit that he deserves to get booed when he plays for England just that I don't think he should be in the team. Hargreaves and Gerrard in a diamond in midfield with Beckham and Cole on the wings would suit me nicely.

he's 24 so it isnt too old. be patient with him though i am sure there will be growing pains in the Prem. I think the other thing to think about is the press surrounding him. He is undoubtably going to be seen as Henry's replacement which will carry a burden all by its self

Both good points. With either Eduardo de Silva or Adebayor alongside Van Persie possibly, or de Silva and Adebayor upfront with Van Persie out wide it looks like we have a fairly solid base for Bendtner and Walcott to come through gradually into. Going foward we should be solid as always. As long as we iron out the sometimes stupid defensive errors then we are still in contention (despite what Drogba might believe).

Ok, maybe the other clubs have been sucessful to some extent because of a larger amount of money but it wasn't immediate sucess but a financial situation bought on by many years of great football and good buisness.

Well i cant agree with ya on the Mancs. Fucking hate them out of principle haha! I mean if you look at the Liverpool teams of the 80s for example, they were buying the best players in Europe, but they werent splashing 30 million quid (used for example) on players nor did they have a 300 million pound roster*.
If you look at the mancs, they have several middle range signings that have become WORLD CLASS. Chelski decided to splash big money on already world class players and prayed that they would work.
Oh i have also heard that Liverpool is buying Torres for much less than the 26 million that has been reported.

Interesting about Torres, in the rumour column on BBC Sport they said he wanted a six-year deal worth £31.6 million which is like 100,000 grand a week. The thing is that signing that large are becoming more and more the norm in terms of the Premiership because other clubs see Chelsea splashing out, and Man Utd. admittedly and so they think other big clubs can afford the huge price tags so drive up the price on players not worth what is paid.
I honestly don't think that Torres is worth 26 million for example (sorry), £15-20m is more reasonable I think. Same goes with this de Silva, having a good scoring record in Croatia does not make him worth the alledged £16m (though I think the £8m on skysports is more likely), but because Arsenal came knocking in need of a striker its a good chance to get some extra cash.
On top of that if your English your suddenly worth £5m+ more than your actually worth, which boggles me completely (see Bent)
TwoStepJeff
07-02-2007, 03:27 PM
Torres will be getting 90k a week from the report i have. He is taking a pay cut to play for Liverpool.
and he isnt worth 27 million, but that is what the fee is for him to get out of his contract with Atleti.
I just cant believe spurs overpaid for Bent, but hell what does Charlton have to lose? They are playing championship footie next year.:freak Makes sense to sell your best player right?
whodat
07-02-2007, 03:36 PM
The price that these players are getting is no different then any American sport. It comes down to what will the market bear. If a player, and selling club, can get the ransom, the it is done. Happens all the time here.
I do agree that is unfortunate that only a few clubs in the Prem can do what is being done, in terms of transfers. It is a double edged sword too. To be able to attract the best players in the world to your league will help you in the major cup competitions. By doing that you bring in more money and a greater appeal to your league, thus drawing even more players to play. Problem being, those new players aren't going to want to play for Sunderland or Villa.
What ever happened to the home grown talent that so many clubs were known for? Is it easier now, with the new economic system, to just buy talent? Sounds like the NY Yankee way of building a team.
Grouty
07-02-2007, 03:41 PM
Ah right I see, didn't realise about the clause in his contract about a release fee that makes more sense.
The thing with Tottenham is that they paid £16.5 million for Bent, yet they have a perfectly good (and debatably better) English stiker in the form of Defoe. Also Berbatov is 10x more talented than Bent (well I think so) and yet they feel the need to bring him in. I realise they are trying to sell Defoe but I really don't see the need. If I was a middle of the road team like Tottenham I'd be glad to have Defoe.
TwoStepJeff
07-02-2007, 03:46 PM
Well the home grown talent aspect I think it beginning to fade. The problem is (in my mind) is that managers are now being forced to succeed quickly and to do that the youth systems have been englected to some extent.
In top of that, how many home grown lads will make it? I mean Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are exceptions in Liverpools case but for the most part, managers are now going abroad to look for young talent.
as for the other clubs not signing big players, it is tought for them to do so, but not impossible. because the EPL has such a sweet tv deal they all get revenues from that. But like you said, if I had the chance to move to even Tottenham or Sunderland, you better believe i am chosing spurs, because thats where I will play consistent top flight footie

Well I think the thing is with home grown talent, in England especially, is that they simply aren't good enough (on the whole). Very few make it as successful Premiership players. In the lower leagues talent is more home grown and people tend to come through more and if promotion to the Premiership then they tend to become more renowned and successful.
With the bigger teams, the level of home grown talent simply isn't good enough so they have to buy in talent from the continent to compete. The difference is that Arsenal will mould very young talent (around 16 years old) and make them into the great players. Chelsea buy up the moulded talent (18-20 years) and sell off their inferior home grown players to lower leagues.

Wenger will always be a genius in my book, but yeah it makes financial sense (of sorts) even if he flops.
I just hate it when people don't appreciate what a great manager Wenger is (and there are some of these people believe it or not). I mean the man made Henry what he is today, brought fantastic football to Arsenal halting the boring Arsenal phase and making them into one of the best teams to watch in the country. He has done a lot for English league football (although some may argue that hes damaged the national side, we've always been mediocre at best so...)
I just don't like it sometimes when people ignore other talent just because they play for or manage another side. I mean even though I think Mourinho is the biggest, most arrogant twat on the planet but I admire his ability to instill such drive into his players and have the balls to make such daring tactical moves that pay off. I appreciate Benitez's tactical genius, which is far better than Wenger's for example. I even admire Ferguson...Jol on the other hand:D

I'd like to point out it was third on goal difference:(. Lack of Plan B going foward/some defensive frailties and rotten luck in a two week period of losing/going out of 3 competitions cost us badly
All of Tottenham piss me off to a certain extent, for obvious reasons.
Fat Sam pisses me off because of the style of football he plays. It's like the polar opposite of Arsenal. Thats why I think Newcastle will manage no better than Bolton ever did this year, at best.

You getting Torres for £20.3m is really good compared to the £26m original price tag. Without a doubt it is the best signing so far. It will continue to be as well even in Utd. sign Tevez, which yeah your right seems a bit strange as he is very similar to Tevez. Other Man Utd. fans were apparently expecting more of an out and out striker, which I agree would have been more appropriate.

I am having an internal debate on which kit i am gonna get. I may go for the 3rd strip as it looks sweet.
Then the debate continues as to which player goes on the shirt.
Another thing about Tevez... what has he done to deserve a 20 million fee? Surely 7 goals in the league doesnt qualify you for that

I like Liverpools new kits, the 3rd kit especially looks pretty decent though I like the white as well, luckily I don't have to pick.
I'm not sure about the £20m fee either. I mean sure he's a quality player and has proven he can score goals (albeit after a while) but he hasn't shown it over a prolonged period at all so I would have thought he his fee would be lower. But then if it was any lower than Darren Bent's it'd be a bit of a piss take:rolleyes

i gotta agree with tims list as well, and as a liverpool fan myself, i was excited to hear rumours of a possible daniel alves and heinze grab, however there have been no transfers between man u and the reds since 1964.

I think our time has come and gone for Alves unfortunatly. He is an exceptional RB but we also have Finnan and Arbeloa to work back there. I dont know how I feel about Heinze.... i think he is a good player but again arbeloacan play on the left as well.
I would be content with one more major purchase ie Quersma Mancini et al. We have signed plenty of youth that will be able to help the first team (hopefully) in a few years when the contracts of Xabi, Carra, Stevie etc come to a close

Sorry, I know I said Arsenal would come second, which I'm well aware is pretty farfetched (because I was semi-joking its far more likely they'll finish third or fourth), but the people who said Arsenal will finish outside the top 4 really need to give me some good reasons for why they think that.
And Henry leaving isn't a good reason.
Sorry, if I sound like a twat but I'm not gonna sit here and have my club shat on with all these 5th place predictions.

Crazy soccer hooligans!
I don't really know much about soccer, although I did watch quite a bit of the last World Cup, but that was mostly due to the fact that it was broadcast in HD. Still I enjoyed it some, no lie.
I checked out that P Diddy performance that Belding posted, and I am still convinced that man is Garbage, with a capital G.

I'd love for us to get Quaresma, I'm a big fan of his.
I'm going to order a Torres 9 jersey soon, I'm debating if I want a red or white for it though.

looks like we bid like 13.2 million for him and Porto turned it down, but would consider a better offer.
I am gonna wo with white or the black one. Already have me a red crouchamania kit

I know what you mean. Its ridiculous the amount of kids that have sprung up over here that walk round in Chelsea kits since he took over.
I tend to respect people more (in a footballing sense) if they have a decent reason to have started supporting a team.

In all honesty tho, it is easy as a young lad to support a team known with winning. Not this guy haha I have been a supporter of Seattle sports teams throught the thick and thin.
As for Americans, it is even more easy to support a team like Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal and now even Liverpool because they are marketed much more over here than other clubs. Football is now a business as well as entertainment.
You know, most people who are man u fans over here couldnt tell you how many FA Cups they have won, or even their League Record. Nor can they tell you Liverpool's record in such competitions.

there is no excuse for Chelsea's spree. I mean it is just sad to see that they have bought two titles. And lets face it, they didnt amass that squad to just win the Prem/FA Cup/Carling Cup... Jose and Roman want ol Big Ears
