Hey guys...looking for some advice on learning guitar

In the past month or so i've started to play my guitar again. I never learned before, just messed around and stuff. Well i started taking lessons, and ive definitely made some improvement. I just don't really know where i'm heading...I can play some basic stuff (Wish you were here, I shot the sheriff, a little bit of Burn one down, and a few others), but its just that I don't really feel like a musician. Strum patterns are hard for me, and alot of the time i mess up because i get off-beat, etc.

So i guess what im wondering is, does all this stuff just come with experience? I know its all about "practice, practice, practice!", but will musical ability come with that? I dunno guys, it just doesn't feel right. I love making music, and I love playing for people (even if i suck :D ), its just that I dont know where to go from here. If I keep practicing every day, how long will it take until I can actually consider myself a decent guitar player? I know im very impatient, I cant help it ;)

If any guitar players or musicians in general have any suggestions or tips for me, I would love to hear them

Thanks in advance,
Drew

How long?

There's no short cuts with music no matter what anyone says, and everything comes with practice. Once you master beginners guitar, what you can learn opens up and depending which direction you take, can become more complicated.

I guess just keep practicing, learn some music theory. You'll find that your personal definition of a decent guitar player will change everytime you ascend to a new plateau as a player (at least I do anyway).

cheers

Dude, who cares... Play because you love to play not to "get good." You'll never be really good at it if you don't have any real interest in it...

That said...I suck at guitar...but I'm getting better lol

Thanks JG!
And playa..yeah man i hear you. I dont play to "get good", i play because i love it. Who said i dont have any interest in it? Hell, playing is one of my favorite parts of the day
And I think i came off as a bit of an ass, I didnt really mean that all I want out of playing guitar is "to be good", because thats far from it.
