...how many front runners there are out there. People talking shit about sports teams they clearly have not followed or supported all season long, but come playoff time, they're "die-hard fans".

I actually had to call someone out this morning at work because all of a sudden, he is a hard core <certain playoff team> fan. Mind you, he had on a Mets hat 2 weeks ago.

How about the people who root for your team when they haven't ever shown any support for them all year? Does it make you angry because you feel like they are "less of a fan" than you are?

And then of course, you have the know-it-alls. The people who just like to disagree with you to try to prove to themselves that they know sports. The people who just rattle off stats to you to make you feel dumb while feeding their massive sports fan ego and trying to sound like they write for ESPN.

We have many of them here, on this board, and many more in daily life. How do you deal with them? Do you call them out? Or just point and laugh?
Share your experiences with these fairweather fans. :twak

I was on my way to work yesterday and I was driving by Coors Field. There were people being interviewed by the news because they had been waiting outside all night for World Series tickets that aren't even on sale.

One was wearing a Mets hat.

Another was wearing a Cubs hat.

I also saw a Dodgers jacket.

What does that mean?

I'm probably in the front runner category. We go to games, cheer for the Rockies, but I can't watch RS games on tv and wan't as familiar with the roster as I am now (though I contend that I knew more than most). There's a lot of fresh Rox bumber stickers on cars around here, I know that.

I have a friend who is a DIE HARD ravens fan. He's crazy. He knows the whole team, all their players, etc etc.

Well, yesterday he was wearing cowboys shit. I totally called him out on it, and he said "oh, well uhhhhhhhh Dallas is my favorite NFC team".

I'm rooting for the Tribe, but I've quit on the Pirates because they haven't even tried for 15 years. I miss having a competitive team to root for in my favorite sport. I don't see anything wrong with it, in my case.

You can have teams that you "enjoy watching". But you can't have a "second favorite team".

I enjoy watching every team in the NFL no matter how good or bad they are. But I've been Bears through thick and thin ever since I was just a little bastard.

i get annoyed with people that have favorite teams in different sports spread all over the country for no apparent reason other than liking a winner. people that like the Yankees, Cowboys, UNC in basketball, but USC in football, etc...

i know there are people that have legit reasons for liking teams from different areas, but when ALL of your favorite teams happen to be consistently good, it gets on my nerves...

See, these a-holes saying "THEY NEED TO UTILIZE THEIR BLOCKING SCHEMES AND OPEN UP MORE OPPORTUNITES FOR THEIR BACKS" are stupid. Do they really think they are more aware of a teams situation than the coaching staff itself? Are they around the team year-round doing nothing but working trying to find their strengths? Of course not. Quit predicting, quit calling people stupid, quit acting like you know anything. YOU DON'T. Sit back and enjoy.

There is some awful coaching sometimes. It takes only a small amount of football knowledge to see it.

Dick Jauron and whoever the DC are stupid for allowing the Cowboys 2 passes to the boundary late. They could have give up a throw anywhere but in the endzone and to the sideline, and the defense didn't even try to take the sideline.

A lot of times a teams biggest weakness is a coach.

Don't hate on people who have a grasp of the game.

You can wear other teams gear. That's allowed. I collect baseball sweatshirts. I've got a Braves one from 96 that I still sport around the house, a Tigers one (my team), a San Diego one (I was a season ticket holder) and an O's one...One thing I'll never do is sport another hat, old English D all the way.

There are rules that apply for what team you can like though.

If you live in a city/state with a team, you are stuck with them except in the following cases...

1) Your dad's team is from somewhere else. For example, if I'm stationed in San Diego while I have a kid, he's allowed to be a Tigers fan, even though the Pads are in his backyard.

2) One of your buddies makes it to the pros, you can now root for that team.

If you live somewhere there is no sports (Alabama), you are free to choose any team, but be careful. If you're 27 and your favorite teams are the Braves, Lakers, Red Wings, and Niners, you're going to look like a bandwagon guy. I had a buddy from AL and those were his teams. I'd say just pick the closest team to be safe.

Any other reasons, and you're a fucking douche bag.

Back on topic, you'd be amazed at how many Tigers fans came out of the woodwork last year. One guy insisted that the Tigers never had a guy named Luis Pujols manage the Tigers. I called him an idiot and went on my way.

The thing that gets me is people who pretend to like sports. My roommates boyfriend, "a huge Packer fan", was explain the rules to her and said that the ball comes out to the 25 on a touchback. I didn't want to make him look stupid in front of his girl, so I left it alone. It's ok to say you casually watch sports, but don't tell me you love sports if you don't live and die for it. Don't tell me you're a baseball fan if you can't rattle off 90% of WS winners in your lifetime. The same goes for any sport. I can easily do that for the 3 sports I love, and could probably do that at a 75% clip for #1 draft picks (football, basketball), Heisman trophey winners, championship MVPs, and could probably rattle off every first round draft pick in all three sports for my team since 1990. It's ok to say you watch sports, but don't tell me you love them if you don't know shit.

I don't know about that. I'm a pretty big Colts and Pacers fan, but I have shit for memory. Just b/c I can't name a certain draft pick from over a decade ago doesn't make me less of a fan - it just means my memory ain't as good as yours.

Although I agree about claiming to be a sports fan but somehow does not know the basic rules/fundamentals of the game. I've met those people, it's amusing.

Hmmm....

How about no?

It's one thing if you have some distant relative that is a hardcore fan of the cowboys or something, so you can say "well, I don't HATE them" but you CANNOT be a diehard Ravens fan one day, and then during week 5 you say "oh uhhhhhh go Cowboys". You're just an idiot then.

I was born in Cleveland and I've been a Cleveland fan all my life and will remain one. I don't care how bad the teams are (and we've had some bad ones). When I saw Indians hats popping up all over West Virginia in the mid-late 90s, it pissed me off. I hate bandwagoners, especially when they're for your team. They haven't put in the hard work and disappointment that a real fan has surely gone through.

EDIT: And I guarantee if the Indians beat the Red Sox (and even now after having beaten the Yanks) a whole new crop of Tribe fans will pop up.

I agree 100%. I have shit for memory about some stuff. If you want to talk rules/fundamentals I'm in, but with so many sports seasons I'm not going to remember everything forever. I'll remember the big things that my teams got right and wrong, but where cruscott35 might say that I'm not a true fan I might say that you spend a bit to much effort unless it's what you get paid to do. It all a matter of perspective.

I call myself a Packers, NYRangers, Yankees, and Nets fan.

I live in Jersey, have my whole life, so three of those make sense.

The Packers I was simply born into. My dad grew up watching Super Bowls I and II when he was like eight years old, so him and his brothers fell in love with them. I inherited it as I was around age nine during Super Bowl XXXI, so maybe that makes me a frontrunner for hopping on then, but I don't see it that way.

If you can't follow one team exclusively, then you really aren't passionate about that team. It's like cheating on your spouse, you do it because you obviously aren't in love with them.

On a side note, what's with people liking teams from cities that they have no connection to? For example, why the hell do you like the Yankees or Cowboys if you never left PA your entire life?

I am, and for the rest of my life, will be a diehard USC, Dodgers, and Lakers fan. However, it wasn't always that way.

USC: Growing up in LA, I didn't really care about college sports. I was just happy when UCLA or USC won something because it just made it a phone atmophere. But then I started going to USC, and the rest is history. They bred me to hate UCLA.

Dodgers: My family split season tickets with other family friends. I enjoyed going to games, but once the strike came, I lost all interested in Baseball. It took the Angels winning a World Series for me to enjoy baseball again. I forgot how much I loved the game and I got so into the playoffs. After that season, I was rooting for my Dodgers all over again.

Lakers: I remember growing up watching the Lakers. Seeing them win in 1988 was awesome. But then, my dad got Clippers season tickets (obviously the cheaper season tickets), so from age 11 to age 15 (the years we had the season tickets), I was a Clipper fan. Then, for some reason, I really liked Nick Van Exel and I started paying attention to the Lakers more. Since then, the Lakers have been my team.

I don't know if any of this means im a fairweather fan or not. However, I have now rooted for these 3 teams when they were not doing well.

The other thing is, ever since I graduated from college, I have really gotten into sports a whole lot more than I had ever been. And I could NEVER even imagine losing my allegiance to these 3 teams for the rest of my life.

I don't really care who someone chooses to cheer for fair weather or not. It just gets on my nerves when someone is obviously fair weather AND outspoken about their new found teams dominance. The Cardinals are my MLB team, always have been, always will be. I'll talk a little smack about the Cardinals, I feel I have that right. I also fancy myself to be a bit of a Yankees(pre '96 believe it or not) fan but I don't switch over and start running my mouth about how great the Yankees are as soon as the Cardinals season is over. But that is just me.

I do find it a little interesting when people have two different college teams. Pro teams are one thing because God knows not many pro teams have an allegiance to their city so why should I cheer for the Cardinals/Rams/Blues/Royals/Chiefs simply because I grew up and currently live near StL and KC. I view myself as a fan of the University of Missouri wholly, not just football or basketball, but in every aspect. I don't see how someone can be a diehard fan from August-December and turn around and switch their wardrobe out as soon as bowl season is over and be a "diehard" fan of another team from January-March. And of course more often than not it works out that the first team is someone like OU, USC, ND, UM, etc and the latter team is a UK, KU, UNC, Duke, etc. Again, that is just me.

Ultimately I think bandwagoners are just a part of sports.

I'm a USC and Dodger fan. I always root for them to win, but I love basketball and baseball so much that I'd just sit down and watch any team play (I watch every nationally televised game, I watch the Angels, I haven't missed a minute of the playoffs the past 7 years, I'm gonna start keeping track of every team in every power conference). I may have my allegiances, but I watch as much as I can of both sports- and naturally I may root for one thing over another (who DIDN'T want Cleveland to beat New York? And don't tell me you weren't pulling for Xavier against tOSU in March, sucks how that turned out). Same can be said for college football, but I don't love it as much as the other two. I'd rather watch the NLDS than a USC regular season FOOTBALL game, for example.

I don't really have an NFL team- though if the Chargers are playing I want them to win but don't really care. I just love watching the game of football, and since I don't really have much allegiance, I just root for GOOD football and QUALITY games.

I don't really have an NBA team either, because I promised myself never to watch the regular season again. I just hate what that league has become. I do root for certain players (Duncan, Garnett, Oden, Durant, Allen, etc), and I just know too much about the game and players to not watch the playoffs. Even then I only watch to enjoy the games, and at times I'd rather certain teams to make it and others not to (such as a Spurs/Pistons final, the Mavericks to get upset this year, etc)- but not passionately- it just comes naturally. Like the NFL I just root for quality basketball (which is never found during the regular season nowadays).

I FUCKING HATE PINK FUCKING JERSEY'S!!!!!!!!!!

I remember the first time I saw on was in Boston outside Fenway, and I couldn't belive my eyes. One of the most storied franchises in history with fans buying up pink gear!!!!! I thought I was in an alternate universe. When my brother saw me gawking he reminded me to close my mouth, and that what I was seeing was for real. After that, he about disowned me as I walked down the street chastising any chick wearing it, and every guy with them. Team gear should only be made in very limited color selections. Those are (1) team colors, (2) team color(s) with black or white. That's it that is where the list ends people. Sorry for the rant please go back to your regularly scheduled thread.

I'm an Orioles fan and dont have a national league favorite team because i simply dont like the national league period. Oh well, sue me. Its all opinion anyway, who cares why we like who we like. Bandwagon fans are the only thing that pisses me off. But hey, i always enjoyed jake plummer so i rooted for the cardinals and then the broncos, now that hes gone, i hate them. I also love the capitals and the flyers, strange. I used to be a huge colorado avalanche fan and at one point had 3 jerseys all because of peter forsberg. I actually missed game 7 of the stanley cup in 2001 because it was the same day as the dave show at rfk. that sucked. As long as you have a good reason for why you like a team, i'm fine with it, except for being a frontrunner. I hope the patriots get caught cheating again.

I actually call these people bandwagon fans.

Frontrunners are fans of teams that come out of the woodwork once their team starts winning. For example the entire city of Cincy in 2005.

Thats a load of horseshit. I've lived my entire life in Cincinnati, and ever since PBS opened its been all sellouts. Everyone I know who is a hardcore Bengals fan now was just as big a fan from 1994-today. No one noticed us because there was no coverage because we sucked.

Now that we are/(fucking were because they cant play for shit so far this year) a good team people actually notice us and they all think we are bandwagoners... and its lame that people think that and discount us for reasons that we had no control over while we couldnt put a team together for 15 years.

Wow 12,000?

Are you serious? :ugh
I think they said on ESPN that in 2001 they didn't sell out a single playoff game prior to the World Series, or maybe not at all. For sure the first two rounds. Which is likely to happen again.

You know you're helping this get back on topic. Let me think of the proper way to put this...............

You know what's weird? Team gear in your rivals colors. I'm a Cubs fan and I've seen black & white Cubs hats, and blue and red White Sox hats. The only others I've seen are the red and white Yankees caps, and navy blue and white Red Sox caps. I honestly don't get the appeal of that.

Not true. I have a favorite NFC and AFC team. NFC is the packers. I got to grow up watching Brett Favre and grew up admiring him. I don't know if it really bothers me to see people starting to wear clothes of a team that is suddenly winning. People start buying tickets to see a team that is winning. Not every team can have a devoted fan base even when losing. I remember Yankee Stadium when it was empty when I started to be a Yankee Fan.

I think what does bother me is the people that start to become a fan come playoff time, so they wear the jersey and the hat. And then they go out to bars to watch the game. But, they are basically going just to get shitfaced. The people that just cheer because they need an excuse to party. That's what bothers me.

Theres two kinds of Met fans.

1. As soon as the Mets lose, they pull their Yankee shirt from the closet.
2. The hateful Met fans that had parents that were fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers or the New York Giants and had a real reason to hate the Yankees cause they basically played in the World Series every year. These fans just have it in their blood to just hate the Yankees. They hate them more then they like the Mets.

I've honestly never met a loyal Met fan that just wants to see them win and then they lose and they stop talking.

I mean seriously, I hate the Red Sox, but I'm gonna be here being all "DIE RED SOX DIE!!!!" Get a life Met fans

and as for having a favorite NFC and AFC team, I don't think its acceptable. Theres teams that you can watch and hope they do good. But you should never buy a jersey of one of those teams.

I am a Giants fan, that's all the stuff that I buy. I like to watch the Jets and I hope they do good except when facing the Giants. But, I don't necessarily want them to win the Super Bowl either because then all the Jet fans come out and act like jerks to. Jets and Mets fans, I really can't stand most of them. But, I hope they do good on Sundays, but you'll never see me wearing green

A friend of mine, we'll call him Rob (because that's his name) has become a patriots fan over the last few seasons. He has always been one of the people who comes over to my house nearly every weekend and watches the games on sunday ticket. He used to be a Falcons fan...and now...he is a Patriots fan. I asked him just last weekend why he is such a big fan and he said "I just like the way they play".

It's the same way with the Gators around here. There are so many damn gator fans since they won national titles it's insane.

I like that. It would be a fantastic collection. How do you choose which player? It would be cool to have an all LB or OL collection.

The worst part was that they interviewed him, and he said he was a fan of everyone from Jeff Gordon to Germany's Womens Socceer team.

And you know what's worse?

LeBron shows up to the Indians/Yankees game with a Yankees hat on, but I wouldn't be suprised to see him show up to a ALCS game with an Indians hat on. Like he all of a sudden is a huge supporter of them...

LeBron James is a joke. How dare he show up there with a Yankees hat on...

And about the thread, I used to go to Clemson, and I remember back in 04, after we won the WS, I all of a sudden saw TONS of brand new Sox hats around campus in South Carolina! WTF?

And I know of people who consistently change their minds on who happens to be their favorite college basketball team...

Such a shame...

EDIT: Another thing, my girlfriends roomate has this lame friend named Glenn, and he claims to be a huge fellow Sox/Pats fan, and he will try to ask me shit about them or just make comments about things because he knows I know a lot about it....Well, GET THIS...

Before this baseball season started I said to him, "soo you excited about DiceK?" And he had no idea who I was talking about or what I was talking about. How could anyone not know about DiceK? If you claim to even be a big baseball fan like he did you would obviously at least of heard about it, you know?

And a couple weeks ago, he says to me, so the Sox have a lead on the Angels for the division huh? I mean I think I know what he meant, and that he meant best record in the league, but give me a break. Don't pretend to be a huge fan when you know nothing about it. He claims to be from up north, but I found out he is actually from NC....Pretty lame huh?
