Miami's supposed to be good this year (see, potentially: random hot CCHA pick that nevere fails to disappoint. Also see: Ohio State). I hope they are.

This weekend 3 of the 5 best recruiting programs in the nation are in the Icebreaker tourney at Xcel (NoDak and UW are missing) so that should be exciting. I call Minny over BC in the tourney championship (if use of that term isn't too abusive of the concpept of 'championships').

Exactly...I wonder if college hockey is more popular in the US than NHL??? Either way we're looking at the difference of a couple dozen people.

I dont know about that scsu call... they should be fine if they get goaltending. Hell, they could win the league if they get goaltending, but that could be a big IF.

Call: Brent Borgen will be one of scsu's best players by February. He's got skills...

Yet the biggest game in the nation will be four hours Northwest of Minneapolis when No. 1 North Dakota opens the season against No. 2 Michigan State at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The Sioux should be extremely tough this year. Yes, they lost the most talented forward in the country, but return two forwards and a defenseman who could easily end up First-Team All-Americans and solid veteran goaltending. The defense will be tough as always as the only loss on the blue line was the team's softest defenseman.

It's all been cyclical in modern college hockey history, so I dont think that'll last. However, it seems like if there was ever a time for a conference to step forward, dominate and become THE single premier conference (like, some would say, the SEC in CFB) it'd be the WCHA from 00 or so to now and beyond... I hope so, I'm all WCHA all the way

There have been 59 NCAA hockey champions, 30 of which have come from the WCHA. They have won at least four championships in every decade aside from the 90s (two). I don't know how much more dominant you can get.

OR - 'modern college hockey history', however undefined, was the main point. Of the last 25 years or so, the power was pretty fairly spread early in the period, with the CCHA and the East sharing power pretty fairly in the 90's over the WCHA. the WCHA never dominated until the last third of the period.

Even if you back it up to 1980 the WCHA has been dominant. They won 7 titles in 20 years if you discount this decade. An accurate statement would be that the early to mid 90s and Michigan's run during the early 50s are the only two short periods of time where the WCHA hasn't been by far the most dominant conference in the NCAA.

Biased? Probably. Incorrect? No.

I think I backed up my opinion pretty well. I mean, over half the championships in history and only two runs of more than four years without a title makes for a pretty dominant conference.

That being said, I can't wait for tomorrow night. I'm heading down to Sensers to watch UND/MSU and the final of the IceBreaker. Should be some great early season hockey.

I actually feel pretty optimistic this year as we have the #2 overall pick in the NHL draft (James Van Riemsdyk) skating on the 1st line, 6 of the 7 top scorers from last year, our top 3 defensemen and both goaltenders back.

College Hockey's back!

Gophers looked like trash and didn't deserve to win. They came back to 3-3 in the third legitimately, then, 4 some minutes left, RPI gets a checking from behind called against them that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen and the Gophs score with a minute left to win. I, die-hard Gopher fan that I am, was outwardly cheering for RPI to tie after that because of how much bullshit that call was. Disgusting. I'd be livid as an RPI fan; they really didn't deserve that. I was talking to some other Gopher die-hards back home (in Minny) and they were saying the same thing - it was really too bad. I guess I'll take it, but I'm not exactly celebrating.

If you look at who has the most championships:

Michigan - 9 titles (first 7 when they were in WCHA)
Denver - 7
North Dakota - 7
Wisconsin - 6
Minnesota - 5
Boston U - 4
Lake Superior St. - 3
Michigan Tech - 3
Michigan St. - 3 (1 won while in WCHA)
Colorado College - 2

Also 7 of the last 11.

The numbers back up that the WCHA is the best, bar none.

Champions in that time? Break it up in 5 year periods. How bout this: 3 points for national champs, 1 for 2nd place. Add that up, tally by conference. Result?

Watching baseball, so I decided to research this. Here goes.

Since 1982:

WCHA - 11 titles, 7 runner-ups = 40 points

CCHA - 9 titles, 2 runner-ups = 29 points

Hockey East - 4 titles, 12 runner-ups = 24 points

ECAC - 2 titles, 4 runner-ups. = 10 points

How's that? :D

Nice Work!! I'm surprised at the HE #'s... looks like they're all Swedish and no Finnish.

Since you did that, and I'm up early with nothing to do, I'll break those down in periods:

I'll go 82-90, 91-99, and 00 - present.

82-90
WHCA: 4 titles, 3 RsU = 15
CCHA: 3 titles, 1 RU = 10
HE: 0 titles, 1 RU = 1
ECAC: 2 titles, 4 RsU = 10

91-99
WCHA: 2 titles, 2 RsU = 8
CCHA: 4 titles, 1 RU = 13
HE: 3 titles, 6 RsU = 15
ECAC: 0 = 0

00-present
WCHA: 6 titles, 2 RsU = 20
CCHA: 1 title, 0 RsU = 3
HE: 1 title, 6RsU = 9
ECAC: 0 = 0

I went by these time periods because they were relatively equal and allowed for the WCHAs recent dominance to be in one period.

I know it was just the first game of the season, but WOW. The No. 3 team, and defending national champion, in the nation comes in and all the Sioux did was route Michigan St. 6-0. Even more, five of the goals came after Oshie was thrown out for a checking from behind penalty not long after he scored the first goal of the game in the first period.

This team has the potential to be something special. I knew UND had the best line in the nation with Duncan, Oshie and whoever they play with those two and I cannot imagine there is a team with a better core of defensemen. Frattin and Trupp were impressive in their first game and Vandevelde looks like he may have a breakout year. The only struggle was the power play after Oshie left, but that's not something the Sioux have to get used to.

SO, I've been devastated because I moved to Cincinnati (like an idiot) from Minnesota and can no longer watch Gopher hockey games. I looked into it and I could get a dish and pay 50 a month and get the Gophs and some other (college hockey) stuff. I was going to do it (and still may), but Friday, the night before the dish was to get installed and the night of the Gophs first game, I saw that their games would be on some FCS channel for the weekend. I ordered it and watched(!!), figuring I'd get the dish the next weekend. But, I looked again and the Gophs v. CC is on this weekend as well(!!!!!!!). So, I went to their website http://msn.foxsports.com/story/1523301 and it looks like I might have a good shot at seeing most of their games, and games from other teams as well (however, this years college hockey schedule has not been released yet).

Long story longer, I posted this in case anyone finds him/herself outside the reach of their teams TV coverage. It looks like alot of WCHA games are on FCS Central, with a few East games on FCS Atlantic but, again, that's last years info.

Another good link for general college hockey tv coverage:

you know, generally, 'sports writers' for college newspapers or websites produce among the worst published material you can find. I find it generally very entertaining, if slightly maddening. Do you still think NoDak's the likely Champion this year? I like a CCHA champion this year, sadly.

NoDak's got the one great offensive line, really one of the best in recent history, but I think they lack scoring depth and they seemed week around their own net against the Gophs last weekend, surprisingly. That said, they seem like they have the make-up, if they get strong defense, to make a deep run. They've got good grinding forwards and speed. Tender is just great, I'm really surprised he's as good as he is.

I don't even know right now. This year is shaping up like the past few where the Sioux are inconsistent as hell the first half of the season. If UND is able to put together a run of games like they played Michigan St. it is hard for me to believe another team can beat them. The problem is they haven't shown any consistency. The key will be finding one or two more guys to step up as consistent goal scorers. Hopefully once Genoway is he will and then another guy or two will as well.

A CCHA team could easily win it all, but WCHA teams are usually better prepared for the NCAA tournament after facing a deeper conference throughout the season. For example, every opponent UND has faced so far this year has been ranked. Who knows though, it wouldn't surprise me to see a team from either conference win it all.

If NoDak gets some scoring from their 2nd and 3rd lines and that tough defense I could see them being my favorite to win it this year. If they get that, they'll remind me alot of recent champions in MSU and UW - great goaltending, a couple flashy players, grit and depth.

I live about 30 miles from Miami U but havent made it to any games. I hope to. Id like to compare them to the WCHA hockey Im accustomed to. Sadly, OSU (90 miles away) and Miami games have not once been on in Cincinnati. Well, its cincy which is a southern city that just doesnt know it yet, and its a complete piece of shit, but still! A little hockey couldnt hurt anything in this hell-hole!

Kyle Okposo is reorted to sign with the NYI when he returns from the world jr's overseas...what has already been a tough season for the Gophers just took a turn for the worse...

This is the first time a Gopher has left the team mid-season to sign with an NHL team, and who knows what this will do for future players. When he came chose to return to the U for the season, it was expected he would sign with the Islanders once the season was up - but he has had a change of heart and had decided to leave the team...

No other sports would this happen, and it sucks...oh well, gotta move on I guess...

where'd you hear that?

KFAN, Jeff Dubay has reported...it started as rumors in the last couple of weeks, but he has received VERY RELIABLE INFO from people who know...

As another part of the rumor was that Okposo had told his teammates that if things went well at the World Jr's he would be signing the contract and leaving the team...

In the greatest bit of irony, on the 2nd annual "Day of Hockey" here in MN (a day which FSN will show a high school game from up north, Gophers and Wild) the MN Wild are playing NY Islanders...this may be the first time MN hockey fans turn on one of its own...

Great series in arguably college hockey's greatest rivalry. Each game controlled half of the game on Friday. Once UND killed that penalty midway through the second they got momentum and never lost it until Trupp put in the game winner with the most amazing goal I've seen in college hockey since Wheeler last year.

Things like Finley and Wheeler will happen when things get chippy like they did this weekend. Zajac's hit was just a cheap shot, and not something I liked to see as a Sioux fan. I lost it when they showed Hak on TV. Pure hilarity.

Both Lammy and Kangas played great. I don't think we'll see Frazee between the pipes for a while. A sweep would have been nice, but anytime you can go into Mariucci and grab 3 points it's a good weekend. Its series like this where I really miss covering the team.

Zajac's hit was a cheap shot for sure. I hear that Oshie got hit right before it, and that is what sparked it but who knows. Finley got into tough guy mode and wanted to fight anyone. The thing is, imo I don't think Finley is that tough; he got his ass whooped by a football player here in September and he didn't even land a punch. Wheeler was just out of control that whole game. The 10 minute misconduct started it, then the penalty in overtime really hurt the Gophers. They needed a win and that was going to be a great opportunity in overtime. The Sioux are on a roll and I'm jacked for the next series here against Denver, Grand Forks is gonna be rockin.:monkey

It's playoff time. It's been a shit season, from my perspective as a Gopher fan, but oh well, hope springs eternal...

WCHA prediction:

CC over AA
UND over MTU
DU over UMD
UM over MSU
SCSU over UW

SCSU over UM in play-in
CC over SCSU
UND over DU
(DU over SCSU)
UND over CC

Im not comfortable with these picks and will probably change them before this weekend.

While I'm at it, early prediction for the final 4:
UND, UNH, UMich., MSU (I picked a UNH-UND final before the season and I'm going to stick with that)

And, hell, Hobey:
Lamoureux, Zatkoff, Porter. Porter wins.

I've seen RIT a couple times this year, they look pretty good. Atlantic Hockey is better every year, too. I like Air Force to win the playoff champ. and give someone a very hard time in the 1st round of the NCAAs. I think Army could do that too.

Oshie going down is tough. I didnt see it or know anything about it, but I've gotta believe it'd take something deathly serious to keep him out when it counts, which'd be 3 weeks from now, and they may not even need him until the F4...

Good to hear Oshie is walking around. The kid is a beast.

I am not worried about Lammy. He has played fantastic hockey lately. When I covered the Sioux his sophomore year I really got the feeling he didn't have the team's confidence. That has changed over the past two years.

I've got no ties to Minnesota high school hockey, so I jumped on the Edina/Gleason bandwagon purely because he's a Sioux recruit. Kid looked great. Two, maybe three, years from now he'll be running the point on UND's power play.

It always seems if you go in to the tourney undefeated you finally get that overdue loss. My hometown hockey team when I was a freshman went in to the state tourney undefeated and lost in the opening round to a conference foe they'd beaten twice during the year.

Edit: I may have been in 8th grade, when I was a freshman they went back again but had to play Warroad and got spanked.

The past five years both UND and BC have been to the Frozen Four a total of 8 times without a national title. If the Sioux can't do it this year, I'd like to see BC out of the other three teams.
