Poker. Too much luck involved. I realize there is skill used but if you don't get the correct cards you can't win no matter how skillful you are. IMHO.

I'm gonna go with golf. Yes, it takes skill, but so does drunk vomiting into a toilet accurately. There is no real exertion of energy!Golf just crosses the borderline as a sport for me. It takes a lot of physical and mental ability to walk a course for 4-5 days in a row and play at the highest level.
Poker. Too much luck involved. I realize there is skill used but if you don't get the correct cards you can't win no matter how skillful you are. IMHO.Poker is not a sport, but over time, luck is not part of it. Any given tournament, sure its a lot of luck. But to win consistently and play poker for a living, takes an incredible amount of skill.

Those statements are just dumb. By that definition weight lifting, the high jump, ect. are the only sports ever. Because if something is too heavy for me. It's quite possible no matter how hard I try to lift something, I'll never be able to.
Does granny have two arms? She might go 0 for 450, but eventually if she swings the bat enough, a fluke hit will happen. Sports are any fun activity basically. What people really call sports are pro sports. For some reason people think active sports only count.
Tiger Woods looks like an athletic guy. Imagine if Brian Urlacher decided to play golf instead of football. He'd probably drive the ball insanely far. As I imagine others could. Just because people see older and out of shape playing golf it doesn't count.
If you take care of your body and are in great shape, you'll be better at any sport. Hell David Wells looked like someone who belonged in a bowling league, not a mound.

Who claims poker is a sport?
NASCAR is indeed a sport...."Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively" Since when does a sport have to involved extreme physical exertion? If you base a sport on that alone, NASCAR, along with other forms of auto racing, surely is a sport.

To me, SPORTS are when you primarily compete against the clock. Running, swimming, cycling, skiing, etc are SPORTS. (exception: wrestling)
GAMES are when you primarily compete against another team or individual. Basketball, Baseball, Football, Golf etc are GAMES.
The hazy in-between thing to me are those where how well you do is based on scoring system that is up to other humans. Gymnastics, Figure skating, diving, etc are in the "hazy" realm for me. yeah, they are sports, because it is a competition, but I would hate to do a sport where if someone was in a pissy mood, they could be the reason I lose.
Now TECHNICALLY if you can make a competition out of it and people enjoy doing it, it's a sport. whether you like it or not, ALMOST anything can be a sport.
NASCAR is hazy to me. yeah, it takes endurance with the heat and shit, but you dont see people seeing if they can sit in a sauna for 8 hours.

Where did I mention team in that??? One on one basketball = sport.
Also, in none of those events did you mention is your opponent actively achieving you from accruing the lowest possible score. When Fred Couples can stand in front of the green defending a Tiger Woods approach shot, I'll consider it a sport.

To me, SPORTS are when you primarily compete against the clock. Running, swimming, cycling, skiing, etc are SPORTS. (exception: wrestling)
But you aren't competiting against the clock in any of these sports. The only thing that matters in those four sports is where you finish, not what time you finish in.

I just will never understand why people feel the need to go hunting, shoot a deer and then have their head on the wall.
You killed a defenseless deer.....congrats?
Are you serious? Let me guess, you don't hunt. Hunting is more than shooting a deer just to put its head on the wall. Do you have any idea what our world would be with out hunting? Deer for example, if we all took a deer season off, there would be so many deer running around, you wouldnt be able to drive around without hitting them, there would be so much compitition amung the deer that they would start eating lots and lots of crops. Hunters usually eat their kill. Hunting is more than killing a defenseless deer for its head.

No, one on one basketball, as I stated before, is an example of a individual sport. Baseball is a non contact sport. Contact isn't required in making it a sport.

I can understand why many feel golf isn’t a sport. According to wikipedia as you sited a sport has physical, aspects as well as rules and competition. I think there is no denying by anyone of the last two, however, although not physical in the way of other sports golf requires a great deal of coordination, timing, and control in order to play at a high competitive level. Many say that it is not a sport because old men play it but plenty of old men play other sports. I feel that golf is played as both a sport and hobby. The old man on the course is not an athlete, just as the old on the courts or field is not an athlete, but those who work hard daily to tune the swing which contains more moving parts then a baseball swing, or jumpshot, as well as tune their bodies such as me and my collegiate teammates, and those playing at a higher level than us are indeed athletes playing a sport.

So why should golf be considered again???
It's you versus the elements (ie. course, wind, rain, heat), using your skills, be it mentally and physically, to get the lowest score in a competitive environment. You assume there are no opposing forces in golf because a HUMAN is not trying to stop your golfball from reaching the cup. The elements are your opposing force - sandtraps, water, high grass, wind, terrain, (beer :D ) etc. That is what you are up against. There are things you must think about outside of simply hitting a ball, ie. wind direction and speed, slope of the terrain, speed of the green, etc. Not only that, but you must play several shots ahead to give your self the next possible shot. Just like setting up for the winning field goal. It's take precision. And if you think it's not phyisical, play 18 holes 4 days straight and get back to me.
Whether you like it or not, golf is a sport.

It takes more skill to hit a 200 yrd drive straight than it does to make a 3 pointer, or to hit a baseball. I think your logic is very flawed. A sport is anything that requires physical output, therefore poker is not a sport. I think if you would play golf you may change your stance.

Here's my myspace blog about it.
First, the qualifying factors...
1) Requires being athletic. Not to say that you have to be the best athlete to do it, so lay off all you baseball haters, but regardless, things in baseball require athleticism.
2) Requires hand eye coordination, or for the sake of soccer foot eye.
3) No machines (sorry moto anything, you're not a sport)
4) Someone or some team has to be actively trying to impede your goal. This is the most important rule and one that disqualifies most things that people may consider sports. Running really fast before you do so you get mentally pumped or whatever does not qualify as actively impeding.
Now what the sports are, and what aren't.
ARE: Baseball, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Soccer (even though I hate it), Rugby, Cricket, I could go on and on.
ARE NOT: Cross country, track and field, poker, golf, bowling, competitive eating, gymnastics, cheerleading, swimming, Tour de Lance (sorry Jason and JB), moto anything, including NASCAR, and again, I can go on and on.
I'm not saying those things aren't hard or take skill, it's just that no one is stopping you but yourself, and don't give me the drafting thing in Tour de Lance, all of his teammates were doped up anyway.

I would classify them as athletic competitions, which isn't a sport...See, what I'm trying to do here is make a clear line so that sports can be defined...In order to do that, you need rules, and you have to follow those rules. In order to not include every competition or anything that can cause you to work up a sweat, I haven't included running/swimming/etc for reasons outlined above.

Again, 18 holes, 4-5 hours, for 4 days is grueling and isn't an easy task while still being on the top of your game. It may not seem difficult when your friends play a few hours every few months, but at the professional level it's not fun.
2) Requires hand eye coordination, or for the sake of soccer foot eye.

You stated course obstacles are "set up by humans who's only objective is to make the most challenging course possible" which is the same as a goalie, a defender, a catcher, etc. The course was designed specifically to "impede your goal". Every sandtrap, lake, tree, slope, dogleg, fast green, etc is the defender impedeing (ie, to interfere with or slow the progress of) your objective of getting to the cup. Just because it's not as obvious as a goalie, does not mean something isn't "actively trying to impede your goal."

Technically you are. You are playing a course they designed specifically to stop you or "impede your goal", as you put it. A golfer is, in affect, challenging the designer of the course. Every player is doing so and the player who defeats the course the best (ie, lowest score) wins. Why do you think they are lengthening courses? Players are getting stronger and hitting further, thereby making course designers change designs, which, inturn, is there way of challenging the golfers.
In golf's simplest form, it's the course designer versus the golfer. It's not as clear cut as a running back versus a linebacker or a forward versus a goalie but it's the same concept.

I would classify them as athletic competitions, which isn't a sport...See, what I'm trying to do here is make a clear line so that sports can be defined...In order to do that, you need rules, and you have to follow those rules. In order to not include every competition or anything that can cause you to work up a sweat, I haven't included running/swimming/etc for reasons outlined above.
so are you defining athletes? Like, I get what you're saying...but I just think you're off. Or maybe we define "sports" differently.

The problem with his definition, no matter how set in stone he wants it to be, is the definition of the word goal. There is no "goal" in baseball. Your goal is to cross the plate more times than the other team. Similarly, your goal in golf is to complete X number of holes in less strokes than everyone else. Your goal in running is to complete the distance faster than anyone else. Other participants are definitely impeding your goal by attempting to use less strokes or win the race by running a faster time.

Exactly. That's another way to look at "impede your goal".

well, that's cool. I didn't know if you just liked seeing the girls in the suits :lol
My high school women's team used to always win states every year, and we always had lots of guys from our HS come out to watch the meets. I never really understood why there were so many guys at our meets, because swimming isn't exactly an action-packed sport to watch, but a few years later, I put it together that it was an oportunity to see hundreds of pretty-much naked girls for free.
:lol oh, boys.

I didn't have large breasts when I swam; I was about a high B/low C cup. My freshman 10-15 went completely to my chest, THANK YOU. :)
It's very hard to have large boobs when your body fat percentage is about 11%.

Wow, when I saw this thread title, I figured this would be a free-for-all :lol
My first thought is I can't believe someone is saying Halo 3 is a sport. That's a bad hit.
I like 4 sports; basketball, baseball, football, and golf. I consider all 4 sports. But there are plenty more that I can't stand. I agree with Katie :eek that swimming is absolutely a sport. You have to be in tremendous shape to swim. Gymnastics, I have to think is a sport; you have to be extremely athletic and limber. You have to have competition. I think all of those sports have competition.

Dude, I am a total athlete: my madden team is undefeated. what do you think of THAT?!
And yeah, clearly someone who says that swimming, running, etc are not sports...has never participated in any of those non-sports.

I always feel bad for gymnastics people or figure skating....how well they 'do' is based a lot on how the judges feel like being that day :(

cruscott35 keeps pushing the fact that the actions of other golfers have no effect on the other golfers as a main reason golf is not a sport. IMO, that is simply wrong. In competitive golf, when paired in a 2-3 player group, the play of the other players has a dramatic effect on your individual game. If a player is being extremely aggressive, and making birdies as a result, a player will have to adjust. If Tiger is seeing Fred Funk put it down fairways at 90% and getting up and down in two, Tiger will be forced to but away the driver and tee off with a iron to minimize risk. If a golfer is looking at the scoreboard and sees they are down by 2 with three holes to go, they will take chances in trying to get a birdie that they wouldn't take otherwise. If a golfer misreads a putt, they give the person putting behind them on the same line a huge advantage in seeing the path of the ball. Simply put the actions of other golfers in a 4 day tourny, have a gigatic effect on the different players.
This along with the mental focus, the reading of the entire hole, for every shot, mother nature, the physical aspect (Swing and walk combined is not easy to keep up after 4 days in 80-90+ degree heat), and the competition aspect make it a sport.
So my definition of a sport:
Competitive activity vs. specific opponents
Physical Activity which involves the movement of ones body in an athletic manner.
Set Rules and Regulations
General body coordination/hand eye coordination

No, I ran track my senior year on days we didn't have baseball games. Again, just cause something is tough and you work up a sweat doing it, doesn't change the fact that no matter how fast you swim, Katie, you can't do anything physically to slow me down.
Same thing in golf, nobody can do anything physically to stop you from getting a birdie but yourself.

Bowling. My buddy rolled his first time the other week, mustered a 226. It takes some skill, but I equate it to poker. Just a game.
I know some supremely fat people who break a sweat while bowling. To some, it might be considered a sport. :cool
Up until I read this thread, I never knew anyone considered poker a sport.

but like, if you have to qualify for something, and in order for you to do that, you have to come in the top 2 or whatever...wouldn't two people beating you stop you from getting that?
maybe i'm just not following correctly or getting what you're saying exactly...

Well call up Ben Stiller and the boys because Dodgeball is now a sport. There's a defense, an offense, someone trying to stop you, no machines, and you have to have good hand eye to aim.

But there's the mental battle that's common in ANY sport. A stud pitcher's confidence may waiver after someone keeps fouling off their best pitches. Well what do you think happens if a guy keeps sinking in birdies, but doesn't get seperation? I'm sorry someone needs to take a 9 iron to the knee to make golf a sport.
You ever see The Greatest Game Ever Played? You may enjoy it, even though it's a golf movie. One of the golfers puts his ball in front of Shia LaBeouf's, that way Shia would need to take 2 strokes to get around the ball. Does he do it? Or is he crazy enough to try and chip shot it? Find out in the movie, about a game that may or may not be a sport.

If there was an opponent in swimming who was trying to stop you somehow or if Vijay was allowed to guard the green Tiger was shooting at, that's the kind of opposition I'm talking about. To me that is the critical element of sport. Dodgeball is ok too.
