"look for them to do well this year" has been said the last 4-5 years. they need a whole new front office, just like the marlins do. the rays have gone from buy for now, to stick with young kids, to buy for now, back to sticking to the young kids. new gm, and giving up ownership to another buyer would do alot of good for that plummeting franchise.

The Rays just switched owners and gm 2 years ago. The Rays have possibly the best farm system in baseball. They are a young ball club with numerous potential all stars. Their main problem lately is pitching. They need some bullpen help mostly.

But, anyway, my point is its always one thing after another with the Devil Rays.
Rocco Baldelli is gonna be Joe Dimaggio reincarnate, Oh! Lou Pinella is managing the DRays and he'll legitimize them, Johnny Gomes is gonna be a masher and hit 40 HRs.
Yeah right.
I'm just saying people always think they're gonna break through, have better players or be respectable, but it never happens.
I mean, how many years have they been around? Like 15 now? And they've never even sniffed being good, meanwhile the Marlins have won 2 World Series, the Diamondbacks won in 01, the Rockies made it to last year's. I could go on.

woah woah. when did i ask him to defend his fandom? hes saying the rays are worthless and he doesnt see why anyone could ever like them, and why people have hope for a team and players that may not have as much spotlight as others. did i question that? yes, because thats why baseball is so much fun. its the game where the 5'7" kid from north dakota can start at shortstop and get the oppertunity at being successful. unlike football where you really need god-given abilities, or hockey and soccer, where you need lightning speed. you can be the bluest-collar, and still make a living in baseball.

He was the one that said he didn't need to defend it. Sorry if it sounded any other way. He pretty much indicted himself with his lack of knowledge. Why would anyone come into a thread soley to shit on a team? I have no problem telling anyone that I'm not a Rays fan, but why try to crap on a team going in the right direction.I'm sure we've all said at on time or another "Fuck the Yankees (and or BoSox), but I wouldn't go around saying that they don't know what they're doing.

I hope it's a better series than the last one. It looks like our bats are picking up (slowly). I'm still a bit suspect on Kennedy, but hopefully he gives a good outing and we don't need to rely on relief (too much). Carlos Pena's an animal though, I hope he doesn't go crazy on Ian.

Trust me, every Rays and Marlins fan understands this, which is all the more reason to get excited now. :lol

But as a Marlins fan, I can tell you its not COMPLETELY impossible: see 2003.

But like I said, this really shouldn't be happening. The Rays just swept the $200 million BoSux and the Fish have won 5 series' and split 2 others while only losing 2, to the Mets and Astros.

The reason for the name change was that Devil Rays (the fish) aren't really in this area of Florida. So it didn't really make sense to call them the Devil Rays. Plus I'm sure there were people who complained about "devil".

The deal with the Rays using Tropicana Field comes back the the orginal owners. They were too cheap to build a stadium and signed a 20-25 year lease to play at Tropicana Field. The stadium isn't really that bad. It's isn't as new as some other fields but it is still enjoyable.

Now there are new owners and they are serious about making the Rays a good club. They are trying to get a stadium built near the water in ST. Pete.

It's hard to deny that the Rays are an up and coming young team with a ton of potential stars.

These are all good points, Nick. I just wanted to add that another reason why "Devil" was left off is because most people refer to them as the "Rays" anyway.

I hope that the new stadium proposal goes through. My only concern is the stadium will not have a retractable roof. I understand space is an issue and the main reason why it won't; but for people who know what it's like in Florida in the summer, it's going to be a bitch - hot, humid, and torrential downpours.

If they built that new that would really suck.....:lol

Just a little background on the "Trop," it was originally built in the mid-80s to attract the White Sox who wanted a new stadium to replace "old" Comiskey Park. There were also talks about the Mariners and Giants possibly moving to Tampa in the 90s to replace the Kingdome and Candlestick Park, respectively. Of course, all three teams received new stadiums.

The bullpens used to be located behind the outfield fence. However, after noticing that officials had miscalculated the distance from home plate (it was considerably shorter than what was labeled) they moved the bullpens to the sides and moved the fences back.

Besides being a temporary home to the Lightning, it was also home the Storm for a brief time, too. It's also been named the Suncoast Dome (original name) and the Thunderdome (when the Lightning and Storm both played there).

I tried to bring up that point and you totally changed the subject and attacked another team that lost in a fluke game.Because right now they are more well rounded than the sox. Your bullpen has i think 9 blown saves this year? Your starting pitching is mediocre at best. And your offense saves the game too many times. That will eventually run out. Right now the Rays are younger, better defensively, and hungrier than any team in the East. You put any one of these guys on the Yanks or Sox and ESPN wouldn't shut the fuck up about them.Yea but its about spending the money to hold onto these guys. Not to mention they went out and signed guys like Carlos Pena, Percival and I don't if Garza was in the trade for delmon young, but moves like that are not moves they had made in the passed. Atleast successful moves. I realize they tried fred mcgriff, jose canseco, and wade boggs but those were not pieces they needed to be a good team. What they did this offseason, in doubling their payroll which is now 40+ million, which is most definitely not last, has alot to do with how well they are playing.

On that note they wont enjoy continued success unless they spend the money to keep all the guys you mentioned. So I'm sorry but the payroll argument is not a good one in my eyes because the Yankees did not spend their money effectively. They pay overpriced washed up talent. The Rays need to pay their young guys to stick around and build a franchise. So to an extent yes spending money has made them better.

The Rays have signed most of the players I listed to long term contracts already...They are working on deals with Kazmir and Upton as we speak. Most of the Rays players, believe it or not, love playing for the Rays. They are definitely a team that should contend for the next couple years. I'm glad they are getting the respect they deserve.

As far as the old guys they signed in the past, that was all with the previous owners/GM. Oh ya and about the team payroll, they're not last..they're 2nd to last. So I think my argument about not having to spend a boatload to win is pretty valid.

I'm fixing to get ready to start a Marlins thread, even though it appears I'm probably the only Fish fan on the site. :lol

Love how both the Florida teams are playing. And now the Fish have locked up Hanley "the Second Coming" Ramirez for 6 years. Hopefully he stays the whole time. Now if we can just get ESPN to care about teams that aren't located in New York or Boston... :rolleyes :BANG:BANG:BANG

they only had 19,000 people at their game vs the yanks tonight

The combination of the Yankees playing poorly and their injuries, not as many Yankees' fans showed up. Face it, the Yankees are pretty average thus far and not as many people are interested in watching them play when they're on the road. I'd probably say that equated to approximately 7-10k less fans for last night's game.

Yea but its about spending the money to hold onto these guys.

Garza was invloved in the trade along with Jason Bartlett for Young. I think that's worked out well, thus far.

A new complex isn't going to get them crowds either. People in Tampa are just old and uninterested in baseball at this point.

The average age of Tampa residents is 34, and New York's median age is 36, but there's 8 million people there instead of 1.5 million in the Tampa/St Pete area. Location is tough for the Tampa crowd because you have to cross the Gandy or Howard Frankland bridge. It's also hard to root for a team when the management doesn't want to put any money towards winning, but the tides are changing and we can see that on the field and it's very exciting. Fans in this area are very interested in baseball, why do you think the Phillies, Blue Jays, Reds, Yankess, Pirates, and Rays all have their spring training within 20 miles of the stadium. Tigers and Indians are only about 25 miles away. Everyone is interested, young, and excited. I'm a hardcore Cubs fan since birth, but have grown up in the Tampa/St Pete area, so I do root for them. If they play the Cubs then I hope the Cubs win. Also, there are TONS of Boston, Chicago, and New York fans all around this area, so that makes it hard to grow a real genuine Rays fanbase. It's like the melting pot of the melted pot.

:thumbsup I'm a Yankees fan since birth. I was born in NY but have lived in the Tampa area for almost 30 years. In fact, because of the ties to Steinbrenner and Tampa I was still able to watch the Yankees while growing up. They used to broadcast their games on local televison (channel 28, which is now our ABC affiliate).

Anyway, this is new for us. I've always "rooted" for the Rays but when it came to playing against the Yankees, I always rooted for them because they had a legitimate shot of making the playoffs and the Rays...well, they were just a joke.

Went to the game last night. It was a good game and Mussina pitched a great game as did Shields, but the Rays couldn't get those runners around the diamond, a little frustrating. It was nice how the fans were still rowdy and excited eventhough we lost.

Sidenote: Many people have stated how the Rays don't have any fans, or at least a large number of fans, and that noone cares about baseball. I think one of the main reasons other teams have so many fans whether they're doing good or bad is because of the teams history. If a team wins the world series or goes to the playoffs, fans will be more likely to stick around and root for their team because they know what they are capable of. The Rays have only been around for 11 years and obviously haven't come close to impressing any fans. This year is different though, and if they continue playing the type of ball they're playing now, and maybe have a chance at the playoffs, then I think the whole community will hop on board, not as bandwagoners but as actual fans who are finally given something they've dreamed about since way before the Rays were here. Once the Rays get some history under their belts, the fans with have faith in the team and there will be more consistent numbers, large ones. If they build that new stadium then the Rays will be off to the races.

I think we will keep up the good play but not as good as we are right now.
If you look at our roster there is no reason why we shouldn't be playing good. I don't think we will make the playoffs but def finish 2nd or 3rd in the AL East.

serious questions to rays fans..

1.) do you guys sincerely believe you will be able to sustain this type of play throughout the entire season?

2.) do you think the rays will make the playoffs this year?

1.) I don't think the Rays will be able to sustain this type of play throughout the season, but no team ever really does. Obviously a season is going to be filled with plenty of ups and downs, but the Rays had a fantastic start that the fans can only hope will continue. If it stalls out, then at least now there is some hope and expectations which may help fuel the Rays into playing consistently better than what everyone else in the league thinks, or is used to. If you asked the Yankees, Angels, Red Sox, etc. they would probably say that the Rays are a good baseball team, and possibly one to be reckoned with later on in the year. They are young, their starting pitching is fantastic (as well as their bullpen), and their defense is great. Great pitching and great defense is what helps propel teams into the postseason, and so far the Rays are executing it better than most. - YES

2.) I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but it is too early to say. If you base it on their past then the answer is obviously no, but they have already exceeded all other previous teams with their play during the first month and a half. They are a good baseball team who has the ability to make the playoffs, they just need to keep this up till the all star break. If they do that then I think they'll have the confidence and experience to make a push for the playoffs. - YES

Serious question to Yankees fans:

1.) do you guys sincerely believe you will not be able to sustain this type of play throughout the entire season?

2.) do you think the yankees will make the playoffs this year?

The Rays have played much better than the Yanks this year..I don't think it's excessive to think they will finish better than them. I don't see them being better than the Sox but we're def better than the Yanks. I know the Yanks always start out slow and then pick up steam late in the season but I honestly don't think the Yanks are that good this year.

Yeah, the rays have played better baseball than the yanks this year...by 3.5 games. I think its a bit premature to say, the rays are better than the yanks, flat out. You guys started hot, and are up 3.5 games. The yanks are without arod and posada. Not to mention awful starts by hughes and kennedy.

I dont think its a mistake to assume hughes and kennedy will pick it up, and arod and posada will contribute when they get back. I think that alone makes up 3.5 games, plus many many more.

True. But lets not forget the Rays have had injuries too. Kazmir missed a month and half. Garza was on the DL for almost a month. Cliff Floyd, Al Reyes and Navaro have spent time on the DL too.
