Paul Byrd (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5468), who pitched the Cleveland Indians (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cle) to the brink of the World Series with a victory in Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday, bought nearly $25,000 worth of human growth hormone and syringes, according to a published report.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday that Byrd's purchase was from the Florida anti-aging clinic that was the focus of law enforcement for illegally distributing performance-enhancing drugs, according to business records.
The paper reported that the purchases were made via credit card from the Palm Beach Rejuvenation Center between August 2002 and January 2005. In that time frame, Byrd pitched for the Kansas City Royals (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=kan), the Atlanta Braves (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=atl) and the Los Angeles Angels (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa). Byrd, who is 2-0 this postseason with a 3.60 ERA as a starter for Cleveland, did not comment after The Chronicle attempted to reach him through his agent via phone and e-mail. Indians general manager Mark Shapiro released a statement Sunday saying the team is supporting their pitcher, who earned the victory in Cleveland's ALDS-clinching win over the Yankees on Oct. 8. "We aware of the story regarding Paul. I have spoken with Paul about the situation, however, at this time I don't feel I have enough information to make any further comments on the matter. He has been an important member of this organization -- on and off the field -- over the last two years and we support him in this process," Shapiro said. More Coverage

ESPN The Magazine senior writers Buster Olney and Tim Kurkjian will have the latest news and analysis on the Paul Byrd report Sunday morning on "SportsCenter" at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The paper said Byrd spent $24,850 to buy more than 1,000 vials of growth hormone as well as hundreds of syringes. The records reviewed by The Chronicle included such items as purchase and shipping orders, Byrd's birth date and his Social Security number. The source that provided the records said the orders placed were consistent with personal use of HGH. In a recent interview with ESPN.com Page 2 writer Sam Alipour, Byrd talked about how important the role of religion was in his life. Byrd has written a manuscript called " The Free Byrd Project" that details his spiritual journey through the major leagues and the pitfalls that pious jocks must leap in navigating a ballplayer's lifestyle.
"Religion can go over into every area, like whether I should cheat out on the field," Byrd told Alipour. "I write about the desire to just make money at any cost. I share about my temptation to spit on the ball, put KY jelly on it or scuff it, to win more games and make more money. That's a big temptation for me, being a guy who throws 82, who relies on movement. "You have a pull, because you have a certain window up here that stares you in the face. Are you willing to take steroids? Because that's available. People viewed that as me being weak. Like, 'This guy doesn't want to win.' " Role of Religion

Page 2's Sam Alipour recently discussed with Paul Byrd the pitcher's struggle with following his religion while being a pro athlete. Story (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=alipour/071016&sportCat=mlb)
• Byrd, Indians win ALCS Game 4 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=271016105)

Byrd said he has two firm offers from publishers for the book and hopes to have it published this spring. "I don't call people out like Canseco," Byrd said. "I share my struggles. I think the last thing the Christian community needs is another person who says they have it all together, a 12-step process for being perfect. That doesn't exist. I can help people by being honest." During his 13-year career in which he has played for seven different teams, Byrd is 97-81 with a 4.35 ERA. This season, he started 31 games and had a 15-8 record with a 4.59 ERA.

This is exactly why I don't care who uses, I just wish more of my guys would get caught...EVERYONE was using during this time, to get outraged at Bonds is very hypocritical, IMO.

People are outraged at Bonds because he didn't need to use steroids to be great.

I don't think HGH has anything to do with what Byrd has accomplished, and I don't think it is out of the question to believe he was using HGH for legit health concerns.

How does any of this change the fact that Bonds also cheated?

Just because other people do it, means we should cut Bonds some slack? :rolleyes

No, but either you come at everyone like you people did Bonds, or you cut him some slack...I choose to cut him some slack, it was basically (in the locker room at least) an acceptable practice.

People come at Bonds because he's an asshole, and he's broken all of these records illegally.

Nobody else has done this.

If you actually think or believe we should treat Bonds just like everyone else, you are insane.

I have no faith. I think they are all guilty until proven innocent.

There is just something about this that seems fishy to me coming out today.

If you read the article it makes it seem as if MLB knew this was going on, and did not have a problem with it.

I cannot believe this story broke today.

great timing in the release of this story..

Just like the Ankiel story. If he comes back and doesn't have that hotstreak and the Cardinals don't make the run at the division back in August that story never gets printed. The Cardinals are one game out 1st, the story gets ran, the Cardinals season unravels. Not trying to frame it as a conspiracy theory against the Birds, just convenient timing.

Not to mention much like Ankiel it seems like a non story. The HGH was prescribed by a MD and was purchased(at least in Ankiels case) before MLB banned it.

Even though I'm a Sox fan, I don't agree with this being released today.

It could have waited another week.

Bonds bought a LOT more than that. I bet he holds the record for most HGH purchases.

I wouldn't be surprised if all athletes today were juiced. IMO it's become a non-issue.

The first time Clemens "retired" and didn't come back and play until June the next season there was a conspiracy theory floating around that he was serving a suspension for performance enhancing drugs that MLB was willing to sweep under the rug if he stayed out a month or two.

They did. The old policy was a joke. It's laid out pretty well in "Game of Shadows".

I don't think they would anymore because there are obvious leaks somewhere. They would create a bigger scandal if it ever came out they were protecting certain players at this point.
