3rd in the NFL in defensive YPG
8th in the NFL in rushing
1st in NFL TO rate
2nd in NFL Time of Possession/G
5th in NFL in Pts allowed/G
Those stats are all reflections of how good they are on offense. It's easy to play defense with a big lead.

that is some unshakable logic right there.
No, it's basic football knowledge.
If an offense is consistently dominating and scoring 38-50 pts. the opposing offense is forced to become one dimensional - it becomes an exclusive passing offense.
Not saying the Pats defense is bad, but if you really think the two has no correlation then .... well it's basic football knowledge.

well that makes two people that don't seem to be following the conversation. the claim was made:
Actually, championship caliber teams know how to run the ball and control the clock. Also they know how to play defense, something the Pats have neglected to do.
this is what i replied to. that's what the stats i posted contradict. the pats defensive stats may seem inflated, but the quote i was replying to is ignorant. i mean, either he's ignorant of what the pats have done this year on both sides of the ball or he's just decided to say it doesn't count (which seems to be what you guys are saying).

As with their defense, no - they don't suck but it is certainly a weakness.

For sure....dominate on Offense and you dont have to put your emphasis on the defense.

It certainly seemed as if you disagreed with the above post.
You said yourself, the Pats' defensive stats are inflated.
you're having trouble reading.
i said they "may seem inflated." football is what it is, guys. you don't penalize a defense because its offense keeps it off the field. that's part of the overall plan for the pats. when the defense is on the field it does it's job. better than nearly ever team.
i replied to a post insinuating that the Pats aren't a championship caliber team because they don't run the ball, can't run the clock when needed, and don't have a defense.
the stats i have provided -- in conjunction with the points you and muskie are making, which for some reason you think undermine the point i'm making -- show that the post i initially replied to is wrong.
the pats are a complete team. they don't have THE BEST defense in the league, but that is offset by how good their offense is.
feel free to bash away or whatever, but when that guy said "the pats aren't a championship caliber team", i felt like replying.
that's why i said you aren't following the conversation. what you're saying does not discount my refutation.

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the Patriots department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy muthafuckin E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the muthafuckin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?
Why don't you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?
Fuck tha Patriots
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so Patriots think
They have the authority to kill a minority
Fuck that shit, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell
Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics
You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
Beat tha Patriots outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water
I don't know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black Patriots showin out for the white cop
Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafucka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk Patriots are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
M. C. Ren, will you please give your testimony to the jury about this fucked up incident.>
Fuck tha Patriots and Ren said it with authority
because the niggaz on the street is a majority.
A gang, is with whoever I'm stepping
and the motherfuckin' weapon
is kept in a stash box, for the so-called law
wishin' Ren was a nigga that they never saw
Lights start flashin behind me
But they're scared of a nigga so they mace me to blind me
But that shit don't work, I just laugh
Because it gives em a hint not to step in my path
To the Patriots I'm sayin fuck you punk
Readin my rights and shit, it's all junk
Pullin out a silly club, so you stand
With a fake assed badge and a gun in your hand
But take off the gun so you can see what's up
And we'll go at it punk, I'ma fuck you up
Make ya think I'm a kick your ass
But drop your gat, and Ren's gonna blast
I'm sneaky as fuck when it comes to crime
But I'm a smoke em now, and not next time
Smoke any muthafucka that sweats me
Or any assho that threatens me
I'm a sniper with a hell of a scope
Takin out a cop or two, they can't cope with me
The muthafuckin villian that's mad
With potential to get bad as fuck
So I'm a turn it around
Put in my clip, yo, and this is the sound
Ya, somethin like that, but it all depends on the size of the gat
Takin out a Patriots would make my day
But a nigga like Ren don't give a fuck to say
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Patriots, open now. We have a warrant for Eazy-E's arrest.
Get down and put your hands up where I can see em.
Just shut the fuck up and get your muthafuckin ass on the floor.
[huh?]>
and tell the jury how you feel abou this bullshit.>
I'm tired of the muthafuckin jackin
Sweatin my gang while I'm chillin in the shackin
Shining tha light in my face, and for what
Maybe it's because I kick so much butt
I kick ass, or maybe cuz I blast
On a stupid assed nigga when I'm playin with the trigga
Of any Uzi or an AK
Cuz the Patriots always got somethin stupid to say
They put up my picture with silence
Cuz my identity by itself causes violence
The E with the criminal behavior
Yeah, I'm a gansta, but still I got flavor
Without a gun and a badge, what do ya got?
A sucka in a uniform waitin to get shot,
By me, or another nigga.
and with a gat it don't matter if he's smarter or bigger
[MC Ren: Sidle him, kid, he's from the old school, fool]
And as you all know, E's here to rule
Whenever I'm rollin, keep lookin in the mirror
And there's no cue, yo, so I can hear a
Dumb muthafucka with a gun
And if I'm rollin off the 8, he'll be tha one
That I take out, and then get away
And while I'm drivin off laughin
This is what I'll say
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
The jury has found you guilty of bein a redneck,
whitebread, chickenshit muthafucka.
Wait, that's a lie. That's a goddamn lie.
I want justice! I want justice!
Fuck you, you black muthafucka!>
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots
Fuck the Patriots

No, this Patriots D is not like the old Patriots D. The old D where the secondary was killer with Milloy and Law and the Linebackers were young and full of power. But this D still gets it down. And unlike the Colts of past, the Pats can put up the offensive numbers and back it with defense. Not the best defense, but they can still beat em. Enough of a D to win it all.

It's silly to say that.
I agree with that. 04 Pats were incredible. Their D would shut down even the 07 Pats Offense if they played each other.
The '04 Pats team was great. However, the 2004 Pats defense finished the season ranked 10th overall while the offense was 7th. The 2007 Pats defense is currently ranked 4th. To this point, the '04 Pats gave up .8 less points a game, but with the mighty Dolphins and Jets up next, that could even-out a bit. Plus, the way the Pats have been beating teams early have allowed opposition to score some points late (Chargers, Dolphins.)The '04 Pats were full bore the entire year trying to win home-field throughout over the Steelers and lowered the points-scored-against over the last three games of that year.
There is no way of saying the '04 Pats would humiliate the '07 Pats. No way. This year's team has looked comparable on defense and better on offense when looked at objectively.
They are still beatable.

Celizic: Wanna watch Giants stink vs. Pats? Too bad
N.Y. won’t stop Brady & Co.’s run at 16-0 on little-watched NFL Network
OPINION
By Mike Celizic
updated 7:45 p.m. CT, Sun., Dec. 23, 2007
Home field advantage and first-round byes are established, so there’s really just one game that NFL fans, both dedicated and casual, are going to care about in Week 17.
And guess what? Thanks to the NFL and the cable companies, most of you can’t see it because it’s on the NFL Network.
It won’t be for the competition value that Patriots-Giants is going to be one the biggest games of the year. This one is almost as inevitable as the day in 1995 when Cal Ripken Jr. appeared in his 2,131st consecutive game on Sept. 6, 1995 to pass Lou Gehrig. The Pats will almost certainly win and finish the first 16-0 regular season in NFL history.
But, just as you watched Ripken break his record by the simple act of walking on the field, you’d watch this one if the NFL would let you. It’s history.
What makes it all but inevitable is the fact that the Giants secured their playoff spot against the Bills on Sunday and have nothing to play for. And no matter what somebody will try to tell you, they have no obligation whatever to do anything more than put 11 bodies on the field and go through the motions. Their obligation is to the playoffs, and that means getting hurt players healthy and keeping healthy players from getting hurt.
In a way, that’s unfortunate. It’s not something you’d see in baseball, where, if someone were going for a record in the final meaningless game of the season, the other team would do everything it could to prevent it.
But baseball players are not at great risk of injury by playing one more game. NFL players are in danger on every snap, and if you’ve got a hugely important game next week and an utterly meaningless one this week, no one can blame you for resting your key players and saving them for the game that matters.
Besides, 12 other teams have had a chance to beat the Patriots, most of them in games that mattered for both teams. They didn’t do it, so why should the Giants have to make up for all those collective failures? The Dolphins, who got waxed Sunday by the Pats, were the last team with a reason to try to beat them — to preserve the legacy of their 1972 team, the only one every to be undefeated champions. They had their chance — twice — and couldn’t get it done.
So the Giants are free of all obligations. Plaxico Burress has been playing all year on a bum leg, and if the Giants play the receiver against the Patriots, they’d be beyond foolish. If they want to sit Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora and Eli Manning and Brandon Jacobs, that’s their decision.
So no matter how much you despise the Pats, don’t get mad at the Giants if they don’t put their best team on the field, don’t expect them to put up any serious resistance.
They won’t roll over — professionals don’t do that. But they won't come out with an incredible sense of urgency, either. They get no reward for winning, and it’s hard to get cranked when there’s nothing meaningful waiting for you at the finish line.
It also doesn’t mean the Giants can’t win. Stranger things have happened in sports. But that’s just another reason to watch — because of that “on any given Sunday” line you keep hearing for the very good reason that it’s true.
But the other reality to keep in mind is that 16-0 is really only half the battle for the Patriots. In a way, they’ve finished the easy part. Now, in order for 16-0 to mean anything, they have to follow it with three more wins and their fourth Super Bowl trophy.
In that sense, the Patriots still haven’t even tied the ’72 Dolphins. The only way they can to that is to win the season’s final game. They’re totally aware of that, which is why you could understand it if Bill Belichick were to sit his regulars and not try that hard to beat the Giants.
He won’t do that, of course. Belichick left his starters in well after the Dolphins where thoroughly whipped. He’s said he’ll do what’s best for the team and its goals against the Giants, and he’s already shown what’s important to him and his players is winning every game.
So he’ll start Brady and Randy Moss and everyone else, and they’ll do their best to score 50 if they can. That’s how they play the game.
You would think the league would let us all watch it, but it’s more important to the NFL to win its war with the cable companies than it is to serve its fans. That’s because the feud that’s keeping most of the country from getting the NFL Network is about money, and dollars trump fans every time.
They want your money and the cable companies’ money. The cable companies, which already have your money, don’t want to give any of it back to the NFL.
The reason the NFL won’t relent an let one of its network partners to carry the game is because they want you to scream and holler at your cable providers so that they’ll cave in to the league. I think you’d be better advised to scream and holler at the NFL to stop holding you hostage to its greed.
Because of the history involved, this is one of the biggest regular-season games the NFL has ever scheduled. It probably won’t turn out to be great competition, but that doesn’t matter. You still want to see it. And the league doesn’t care.

I personally believe the 85 Bears and the 78 Steelers are the two best teams in NFL history based on what I've heard, seen, and read, but I think both of those teams would struggle in today's NFL. However, the Colts and Pats would get murdered by the top teams of the 70s if they played in that era.

I don't have a problem with real Pats fans. I find it annoying that all these bandwagons fans come out of the woodwork and claim the Pats are the GOAT when they don't even know football.
There are "Pats fans" around here who wouldn't know who Steve Grogan, John Hannah, Stanley Morgan, or Daryl Stingley are unless they looked on Wikipedia.
They are one of the main reasons all the hate is going on around here.

we, the fans may bitch and moan a lot. but that doesn't make us unloyal. it makes us more loyal. it brings to mind when people wanted bush out of the office. people were called un-american for not liking what he was doing. in fact they were more american than the people that just nodded and smiled when they didn't like what was going on.

Belichick is indeed an asshole.
Their running game doesn't suck, it just wasn't utilized enough that if I was a fan IDK how comfortable I'd be with the running game - regardless of 2-3 games Maroney was actually used and was successful.
Moss can't catch over the middle? Eh, IDK if I'd go that far but he is definitely far from a possession receiver that can exploit the whole field, but his job is to stretch the field for guys like Wes and the rest of Brady's weapons, so this really doesn't matter.
You forgot about HGHarrison, the defense being slow and old ..... global warming, Brady having illegitimate babies left and right, etc .....

Let me just say this...
The Pats are not only the best team in the NFL, but when they win the super bowl, they will also go down as the best team ever assembled... Period
This is the biggest, fastest, strongest NFL ever... We are also in a salary cap era that has created one of the most evenly matched leagues in professional sports... And they have dominated... Bitch about the cheating if that makes you feel better, but you know as well as I do, that had nothing to do with their unbelievable success this year... And if you really believe that it did,:freak you know nothing about football.
Hate it if you want to :lorraine ... But the team we have the privilege of seeing right now will go down as unmatched in NFL history.... And we may never see another team like this in our lifetime.... And that is a fact.
Stats will prove it, newly broken records will prove it, 16-0 in the regular season will prove, and winning the Super bowl will also prove it... If you still want to argue after all that, then you are wasting you time.:BANG

I really think that some of the best teams from the 70's and 80's would just get man handled in today's NFL...

:lol There has been no doubt about today's players being head and shoulders above past players physically/athletically. NO DOUBT. I don't even think anyone has questioned that, if they have then they are just plain wrong.
The (valid) point that has been made is the lack of parity in the league. From watching the games, it appears as if the NFL is a bottom heavy league in which there is a glaring gap separating the elites (namely NE and Indy) from the rest.
Now if the Pats get lucky and actually win the SB (:D) should they be among the short list of teams that would be included in debate in the greatest team ever? Most definitely.
But, as in all debates, every variable must be considered including the apparent fact that there is a huge disparity in talent within the league.
EDIT: Just b/c a team is physically/athetlically superior does not make them a better team. I would venture a guess that Indy, NE, SD, Pitt, Jags, Dallas, GB would all have a good chance against many of the past SB winners (way back in the past) simply due to the current players' sizes and physical capabilities.
jdbartender
12-31-2007, 10:08 AM
I think I disagree with that... First of all we are in a salary cap era, which has def evened the playing field... The PATS are not the Yankees with an endless supply of money to go out an buy anyone and everyone they can... They had to be strategic putting that team together. They just put a better team together than everyone else... I think that the PATs need to be given an A+ for smarts on that one...
Now lets take a look at their "talent"... I think it is obvious that Randy Moss's career was going down hill before going to NE... He was not the same player on Oakland that he is today... Many teams were not even interested in paying him for the 2007 season. My point is, if you put him on the Dolphins, I really don't think their record would have been that much better... Randy is only the best receiver in the NFL when he is put on the right team... He not superman, he is a puzzle piece. And he fits with NE.
Also, Junior Seau's career was over and the PATs brought him back at 38 for another season... Many teams wouldn't have taken that chance after his forearm injury... Why bother, the dude is almost 40? They took a gamble, and it paid off... Good for them...
And then there is Brady... He was like winning the lottery. I am not going to deny that... A 6 round draft pick, destined to never get a real shot unless someone gets hurt, turns out to be one the greatest QB's of all time. What are you going to do? The PATs got lucky on that one.
In the end, I am not going to say that the PAT's have the most talent in the NFL on an individual player level... They have the most talent as a team, which is saying a lot... The players work amazing together, and have created a stellar balance. Their coach, although a prick, is also a genius.
However, I do believe they are beatable... They have almost lost 4 times this season... They just rise to the top... So for the NFL being so "uneven" with talent, this team is still extremely vulnerable... I still believe that just about any team can win in the NFL on "any give Sunday". Unless you are the Dolphins ;)

Most definitely the Pats deserve an A+ on their personnel moves, scouting and player development. The only team that matches NE in this dept. is Indy.
Which is my point. No team can match these two teams in terms of all the things stated above, hence the argument of a bottom heavy league.
I was not at all comparing the Pats to the Yankees, relative to the salary cap, the league has done a good job setting up a system where a small market team like Indy can compete. :thumbsup To the league, it is a level playing field in that respect.
Agreed again.
Also, Junior Seau's career was over and the PATs brought him back at 38 for another season... Many teams wouldn't have taken that chance after his forearm injury... Why bother, the dude is almost 40? They took a gamble, and it paid off... Good for them...
Again, my argument that the league appears to be lacking in parity is not referring to talent alone.
The Pats have talent, but their winning b/c of the overall strategy they have implemented in building a team. Credit goes to the ownership, management, scouting, to coaching for finding just the right pieces to fit together.
Having a talented team is not enough, they have to fit together as well.
And then there is Brady... He was like winning the lottery. I am not going to deny that... A 6 round draft pick, destined to never get a real shot unless someone gets hurt, turns out to be one the greatest QB's of all time. What are you going to do? The PATs got lucky on that one.
I don't know about luck, now given, I doubt the Pats expected this much from a 6th round pick, but again credit goes to their scouting dept. The Pats and Indy are very good in finding very good players at later rounds of the draft.
And :lol I'm also gonna go ahead and disagree with you about Brady being the best ever ... but that's for another day.
In the end, I am not going to say that the PAT's have the most talent in the NFL on an individual player level... They have the most talent as a team, which is saying a lot... The players work amazing together, and have created a stellar balance. Their coach, although a prick, is also a genius.
Agreed on all points to a degree. Obviously considering I'm a Colts fan, I'm going to disagree with the "most talent as a team" I think they are 2nd best ;).
If we know one thing from recent postseason play? Anything can happen.
Basically, I still stand by my argument that it is a bottom heavy league. As an organization/team, there does seem to be a definite lack of parity in the NFL relative to past seasons.

This year there was the PATs :thumbsup ……………………………………………………… and then there was everybody else. :thumbsdow
This is the type of proclomation that should be made in a month from now not today. They're nothing but a footnote to history unless they win 3 more games. The Steelers, Chargers, and Colts were all dominant and heavy favorites who didn't win when it mattered.
Sure, the NFL is bigger and faster than ever, but that doesn't mean there are better football players in today's NFL than in past eras.
The NFL isn't evenly matched. The well run organizations have seperated themselves from the pack, and it's not a coincidence that 4 of those teams won their divisions in the AFC. PIT and SD have fell a little behind INDY and NE because of coaching changes, but they're still among the best.

The Pats still have a long way to go and many great teams stand in their way, but you can't just write off what they've done to get to this position.
Of course the NFL's not evenly matched. If it was, what would be the point in playing games? You play games to see who is the best. However, there are still games that are lost by the "better" team. NE was by far the best team over the course of the regular season. That fact is not arguable. Obviously, the teams that were the best wound up winning their division. The Packers certainly weren't supposed to be in the position they are at the beginning of the year. Three teams in each conference missed the playoffs after making the playoffs last year (four division winners changed.) Sure there are teams that are up over the past few years due to great management, but to act like there is no change in the league from year to year is just foolish. It seems like you will do whatever you can to discredit the Pats. They are the team to beat. They have been the best thus far. Only team ever to win 16 regular season games. Trying to discredit them is discrediting the entire league, which I guess is what you're trying to do.
The elite players in the league today would be elite in any era.

I don't think arguing that the league is "bottom heavy" with a huge gap between the haves and have nots discredits the Pats.
IF the Pats win it all, they most definitely deserve to be included in the debate regarding "greatest teams ever". But as in all debates, there are many variables that need to be considered, one of which, relative to the Pats, is the seeming disconnect between the elites and the rest of the league or the lack of parity/competition in the league.
Is the above argument enough to discredit the Pats? Nope, just as saying the Pats going 19-0 is enough to argue that they are the greatest.
Basically, if the discussion needs to be taken up in a month, that is only one variable, among many, that should/will be considered for the debate.

I will admit though that it does blow (unfair?) to the Pats that just b/c of the apparent reality that, excluding a handful of teams, the league pretty much sucks (at least compared to the elite teams)

It is ridiculous how some people in here are trying to discredit the Pats by saying the competition isn't as good as it should be. The Pats played the other three division winners in the AFC and three playoff teams in the NFC. There is a salary cap that keeps the playing field more level than any other sport. It's just what it seems. There is no great separation that didn't exist in the past. The Pats still have a way to go before being crowned as the greatest ever, but the comparisons are certainly warranted by their success so far.

How have I been trying to discredit the Pats. All I said was that seeming disparity b/w the haves and have nots is seemingly wide and that is only a variable in the potential debate of greatest teams ever. And that's it.
:lol You are a bigger homer than the Pats fans .... Relex or I'm gonna get suspicious, about Bellbuttonkid, Nasty, Mr. Nasty, Nastyman somehow getting a hold of your password and posting under this name.
Seriously, have you seen other teams play that doesn't involve that Pats, Indy, Dallas etc .... They suck!
I'd hate to see someone say anything about your actual home team.

First of, quit thinking I'm addressing you unless I actually quote your posts directly. But no, not all the teams outside of Indy, Dallas, etc (? wtf) suck. There are playoff teams and then there is the rest of the league. It is ridiculous for anyone to say that there is a huge gap between the teams that didn't exist in the past. The Pats beat the three other AFC division winners. I guess all three of them suck as well. Ridiculous.

What they've done is have a great season, but it doesn't mean shit unless they win the Super Bowl.
It's impossible to compare teams from different eras because the game has changed so much over time. The same goes for players, because their training has changed so much over time. How dominant would Joe Greene or Jim Brown be today?
Yeah, the whole talk about the '07 pats being the best team in NFL history really hurts the legacy.
It's easy to call the Pats great today, but 20 years from now people might few things very differently.
during their undefeated season, the pats played teams with a higher winning percentage than the dolphins did during theirs. fyi.
I don't think many people consider the Dolphins to be the best of all time. If it wasn't for the Patriots success this year, the Dolphins wouldn't be getting the press they are getting.
moss and welker haven't won shit yet. they'll play for below market value to stay with the bets team in the nfl. tom brady did. they will follow
You're assuming they're the same type of person Brady is. There is no guarnatee the Pats want them back, especially if they don't win the Super Bowl.
It is ridiculous how some people in here are trying to discredit the Pats by saying the competition isn't as good as it should be. They beat teams who had success this year, but look at what is actually going on with those teams. Mike Tomlin, Norv Turner, and Wade Phillips aren't Cowher, the Tuna, or Marty.
Just because the field should be level doesn't mean it is.
I disagree. The cheating they were involved in wasn't that serious to many. It probably helped them more in years past than this year considering teams knew the Pats had studied their defensive signal and had time to change them up.
The cheating casts doubt on what they've done in previous years, but not this year.:thumbsup :thumbsup

First of, who is your "hometown" team? Just curious, plus I have to make sure not to say anything that may be perceived negatively about the said team b/c ...... damn you defend the Pats and Moss more vehemently than most Pats fans and I'd hate to see how you'd react if I critiqued your actual team.
Secondly, what? I have not said anything directly about the strength or weakness of the Pats schedule. Nor have I been comparing past teams to current teams.
Again, all I've said is that OVERALL there does seem be a lack of parity in the league as a whole. This is only an opinion, but if one has watched enough games this year and compare the play of NE, Indy, etc .. compared to the rest of league, I don't think the above sentiment is ridiculous.
Good god man, I'm sorry if I have offended you and your Pats, but it's only opinion. Relax and take a deep breath. :D

you'll be surprised, i'm sure.
Either you have a case of wishful thinking (can't blame you) or you are just thinking much too highly of professional players.
Ultimately for this players, it is a job, a way to make money regardless of all the sports cliches out there.
But you are right, if Moss did end up leaving millions of dollars on the table just to play for the Pats, I would be very surprised.
Not saying it can't happen, just sayin' odds are Moss will want to get paid, just like most every professional athletes.

You said earlier in this thread that teams having better records (which the Pats competition have had compared to the 71 dolphins) is a sign of teams in the league being more evenly matched. Now what is it that you really believe?
I'm a saints fan. They are a great example of parity from last year to this year. As are the Bears who ended their playoff hopes. I really just don't think there is a huge dropoff when you go from the best teams that are not NE to the rest of the league. They are certainly beatable, but it will take a great team playing their best ball to do it.
I look at what the pats have done and see that it is the greatest accomplishment in the history of the NFL regular season. There are no signs that they were given an easy road or any signs that they will be beaten in the playoffs. They still have a way to go, but as it stands they are legitamately compared to the greatest teams of all time.

They built a banged up Colts team and beat two other teams trying trying to replace HOF coaches.
Look at the league today, and compare it to even a few years ago. It's not the same league.

That list doesn't support the argument that the league is more talent heavy in a few teams now than in eras past.
The Cowboys did win 12+ games 5 seasons in a row. Regular season success correlates with the playoff success. The only other team to ever be undefeated through the regular season won the super bowl.
