bball team is good every year

and we know about the football team. is it just great coaching or what, tradition? the city of columbus is nothing special, so why do they get the top recruits in almost every sport

Biggest university in the country.
51,000 undergrads rabid about sports
Amazing campus.
Terrific social life.
Top of the line facilities.
Woody Hayes Center (which will make any football recruit cream himself).
Jim Tressel.
The Horseshoe.
$100 million athletic department budget (the AD is its own sovereign entity)
Downtown has plenty of entertainment.
Spring quarter.
Can major in anything
Quality of education and value of diploma improves with every passing year.

I could go on and on and on

High population density and little competition in the state of Ohio.

I wouldn't go that far. They have for the past few seasons. I can't discount any great football player wanting to go to a proven powerhouse. But I find it hard to account for their terrific success on the recruiting trail in basketball that seemingly sprouted from nowhere.

its not unheard of, but drawing away Indianas top 2 recruits away from Indiana is just odd

The b-ball program certianly took some years to play catch up, but with a professional quality arena and a growing desire for a winning b-ball team in OSU, it won't be long until Thad Matta has the Buckeye b-ball team in the Top 25 year after year. He's already pulled in another Top 5 recruiting class to follow up the Thad Five

And that's what I don't get. Where did that come from?

Like I said, it helps to have top notch facilities, great coaches, an amazing campus and a hungry fanbase.

Columbus, and the campus area, offers an amazing college experience. OSU has what it needs to attract any recruit from anywhere. It was just a matter of really dedicated efforts to improve the b-ball program.

I hope this is what happens in Chapel Hill with Butch Davis. Playing for a national championship within 3 years might be a little out of reach though.

He is doing his best.

I say if we win these last 3 and become bowl eligible, it will be HUGE for recruiting.

We already have a nice class shaping up. Add that with the freshman and sophs we already have.

Once every player on the roster is a Butch recruit, we will be ranked in the top 15. Guaranteed.

Ohio State isn't the only school in the country with great facilities, coaching, and campus life. Most D1 schools are great in all aspects.

Of course it isn't the only school that fits that description, but what can I say, it's the intangibles of Ohio State.

i'm hoping for OSU's sake they don't make the BCS title game again. although it couldn't be much worse than last year, i don't see them beating anyone in the top 5.

If there's one reason, here it is:

A possible commit looks at all the "powerhouses" - ND, USC, FLA, MICH, OKLA, etc for football and KU, DUKE, AZ, UCLA, FLA, IU, etc for basketball.

BUT - then they see OSU, and the difference is that it's THEE Ohio State University. BAM!! :twenty4 there ya go...

Findlay 70 - Ohio State 68

i don't think getting beat by a division 2 school in your own gym makes you good in basketball.... :lol

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Marcus Parker scored 18 points to lead Findlay to a 70-68 victory over Ohio State (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=194) on Tuesday night, the second time in a week a Division II school beat a Big Ten team in an exhibition game.

On Saturday, Grand Valley State beat No. 8 Michigan State (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=127), the conference preseason favorite, 85-82 in double overtime.

The Big Ten made headlines this way to start the football season when then-No. 5 Michigan Wolverines (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=130) lost 34- 32 to Appalachian State from the Football Championship Subdivision.

:lol

Eh, it was an exhibition game. Who cares. Shit happens.

Given the age of this team (averages 18-19), and the fact that most of them have never played a competitive game together, it's not that big of a deal.

It is not by any stretch of the imagination, on par with Michigan losing to App. State
