my main problem with standup is that it actually feels like a cut/paste job... sure that may be a creative way to make some songs but when you get something together have the band rerecord it so it doesnt sound so fucking blah and thrown together

I have to agree that Stand Up wasn't one of their best albums but.....
a couple of those songs sounded great this summer, now that they have been polished up a bit! Bayou, You Might Die Trying American Baby Intro,
I thought they sounded better than I thought at first when I heard the CD.

Ill give it a yes, because i actually like some of the songs Fonz has rumored about being on the album.
but are they just looking at adding them because they know we'll like them even though they are old so they don't have to worry about fully creating another song that is good?
if loving wings is added, yeah, it will probably sound great and we'll all be happy to get a studio LW, but why should a song thats been around for several years be the reason why an album is good? the songs stefan has been talking about should be ignored when thinking about if the album is good or not. when it finally comes out, it will be a good album based on 2 things - 1) how well it was put together and 2) how good are the brand new songs
a bad production job makes good songs (like shotgun) go bad, and bad new songs could make a good production job a waste of time.

When you follow a band from the begining and the first couple albums attract you, The minute the band alters their style a little everyone is having a fit. I can understand this because the original style is what attracted you in the first place. Not to sound OLD and like a know it all...
I've been traveling around since the mid 70's listening to all kind of bands
play. Trust me , DMB is one of the most talented band out there, every band has good and not so great albums. You kind of have to keep an open mind and take it for what it's worth. There will be more good music from these guys. The same people who are upset, probably go to the shows and are not happy with the set list eigther! Just go listen and enjoy the night!!!
The world don't revolve around just your taste all the time. Believe me there aren't that many bands any more that are as talented as these guys.
I've seen ALOT of bands play. DON'T WORRY!!!

IMO Stand Up isn't as bad as everyone thinks..it is my least favorite of the DMB albums..but I still listen to it and enjoy it. especially songs like American Baby, Louisiana Bayou, and You might Die Trying (<-better live). But as for the new album I have very high hopes. I really do like the new songs and if his songwriting is on an upswing and we could expect half the album to be new songs we've heard live but re-worked and perfected in studio and the other half entirely new and good songs..than this album will kick ass!!

this is perfect logic that some people just can't grasp.
It is good logic.
It doesn't change the fact that SU is as bad an album as has ever been released by any respectable artist, or the fact that it hasn't been worth buying a single ticket to live shows since 2004.
But otherwise, it is good logic. Bands to have their peaks and valleys.

02-06-2008, 07:50 AM
uhhhh, probably. Yeah.
that being said, even if it isn't Tits McGonnigal, that doesn't mean that "it's over" for the band, and to those of you who would "walk away" if this album doesn't meet your standards, you're pretty piss-poor fans. Two sub-par albums in a row does not a used-up artist make. Case in point:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan_discography#Studio_albums
take a look between 1978 and 1988. I count no less than 8 sub-par records in that period (that's a whole decade's worth btw . . in a row). Dylan himself admits as much in his autobiography. Was he done? Oh Mercy would beg to differ.
so, ok, DMB is not Dylan. I know. Not only are we talking about a whole band as opposed to an individual, but also that individual is one of the most prolific songwriters in history. Understood. But i picked Dylan because he's the first person to pop in my head that fits the circumstances of my point, which is this: Another less-than-off-the-hizzle album doesn't necessarily equal musical Ragnarok. There are other examples of artists that have had a couple of average records in a row and then come back to put out some of the best stuff of their careers. Clapton and Cash also come to mind immediately, and im confident that i could come up with another 3 or 4 good examples if it wasn't almost 4 in the morning.

My gut instinct is to say yes, but then again, I also thought that there was no way DMB could put out an album worse than Everyday. However, there is evidence this time around it seems that they are actually conscious of the need to make the album good as opposed to simply putting one out. We shall see whether that remains the case, or whether some new producer comes in, wipes the slate clean and gets them distracted with yet another formula that doesn't work for DMB.

A polished turd is still a turd. Stand Up was their worst album. They should have spent more time spent in the studio building up those songs to how they are now with better lyrics. BUT that's another discussion for another day.
Back to the topic, I sure hope that this cd is better than Stand Up, I don't see how it can get any worse.

I really really hope that this album is amazing just so all you people shut up about your opinions on SU. Nah you're right I worded it wrong. I guess I'm just saying that all of you guys arguing about SU re sorta being counterproductive to everything because you just talk in circles and you either like or you don't. why should a song thats been around for several years be the reason why an album is good?
A lot of people keep saying things like this, but truthfully, DMB has been reforging old material in their studio work for years. Halloween, Pig, Captain, and Grace is Gone (the rift at least) are all examples, and there are more. BTCS is really the only example when a large amount of truly brand-spankin' new material was well-received. DMB quality seems to depend entirely on the deliberate evolution of songs. With Everyday/Stand Up, the evolution simply did not take place. I think working with older material that's 4-7 years old while continuing to rework the more recently road-tested songs will ultimately extend DMB's lifespan as a band, inspire them to write more good music, and imo allow them to focus on the quality of each individual song.

i almost feel like it has to due to the strength of a few possible songs, namely Loving Wings and Shotgun. Could you imagine Shotgun and something like Smooth Rider on the same album? 1. Intro >
2. Cornbread
3. The Idea of You
4. Sweet Up & Down
5. #27
6. Shotgun
7. Can't Stop
8. Blue Water
9. A Dream So Real
10. #40
11. Crazy-Easy (fade out; full band Butterfly outro)
That, for me, beats all but the big three.
i know thats a 'wishful thinking' list, but blue water? honestly? a song that hasnt been played by the full band in over 10 years you think could possibly be on the new album? that is some crazy talk if you ask me :lol
in regards to the original topic, i think its virtually impossible for this next album to be worse than stand up. the band would actually have to WORK at making an album worse than SU, and if they're going to work that hard to put out a bad album, then i question their motives as a whole :lol
