View Full Version : What are the chances the band will scrap the 07 songs?

That is, Idea of You, Shotgun, Cornbread etc.
That is, if they scrapped them, they would start from scratch.
I really don't think they will.

Idea of You is a perfect new single. There is no chance that that song will be discarded. If I were to say a song had a 100% lock, IOY would be that song.
Hopefully I won't live to regret those words, but that's what I think.

idea of you and shotgun are really 06 songs, and i believe cornbread was played in 06, but i could be wrong about that. id say the 07 songs would be like 27, ehhee, a dream so real. but ill just consider those all new songs lumped together. i think IOY has a real good shot, but it really depends on what the new music that they write soudns like. if they go with a crazy easy, joyride, sugar will feel to their new songs, cornbread and 27 wouldnt really fit. i guess we will have a good idea of what they are using or what they are scraping on the tour, since they siad they are going to be playing new stuff.

Cornbread, #27, and A Dream So Real are '07 songs.
Eh Hee, The Idea Of You, and Shotgun were '06.

Just to clarify, I'm counting any songs that were debuted in 06 then played in 07 as 07 songs along with those that debuted in 07 as they each changed a bit.

Out of IOY, Shotgun, Eh Hee, Cornbread, #27, and A Dream So Real, I think IOY, Shotgun, #27, and Cornbread are very likely to be on the album. The others, iffey but still very possible.

IOY- They like it. It's a good single. Probably gonna keep it.
Shotgun- They have put too much work into this. They worked on it in November too.
ADSR- They fell in love with this tune. It's not going anywhere.
Eh Hee- Dave already did it... The band was coming into it during the end of the tour. With Tim playing, this seems likely.
Cornbread- Played at every show. I know this applied with the 04 tunes, but this is staying.
#27- I hope to God they keep it. I love this tune. Tim being there helps its chances

IOY - Survived in the '06 purge. Was the most "complete" of the '06 material when it made its debut and has changed very little. Probably a good bet to make it.
ADSR - A fun "in the moment song" but not going to stick through session. Pretty underdeveloped. If it stays, it stays in a completely reworked form. Probably not on the album as-is.
Eh Hee - Already released Dave Solo. Not going on the album.
Cornbread - Fun live song, but the band is gonna have a tough time making the magic work in studio. Stays on the cutting room floor.
#27 - Makes it.
Shotgun - Makes it. Tim will add quite a bit to the track.

I'd say that having Tim guest on the album makes Cornbread a lock.

I agree. Cornbread is porbably one of the reasons why Tim is in the studio. I can't wait to hear what he adds to Shotgun and IOY!

#27 will stick around because Dave said it reminds him of their older material. Knowing this album needs to be good, and knowing their older stuff was really good, I don't think they would get rid of something that could have been from back then.

Eh Hee will get scrapped. Dave is already making money from it.
Idea of You will be on the album. we already have 4 live releases of it.
Shotgun better be on the album
#27, i like the song but it could go either way
ADSR the band seems to like it, so it might stay around, once again im indifferent
Cornbread is fun but will it fit the new album.
RobRoy286

1. Shotgun
2. Eh Hee
3. Sugar Will
4. Loving Wings
5. A Dream So Real

I don't think this is a producer that they're relying on to help them write (like they were with Ballard and Batson) so If that's correct I would say there is a good chance that many of the 06 / 07 songs will make it on the album in one form or another (some may be drastically changed, mind you), but I wouldn't count on all of them making it.

what makes you think they'll scratch IOY?
RobRoy286
03-15-2008, 12:44 AM
I don't know...kind of what the last Podcast said. It's getting overplayed and drawn out. I know Dave has said that he "loves that song," but for some reason I can see that one missing the cut.
And I really want Eh Hee on the album, if they give it time and turn it into what it should be - an acoustic driven song with an African vibe. I think they could do something with layering on the chants, and Tim could add a lot. It won't happen, but my "dream" Eh Hee starts out with XR on the didgeridoo, then the chants coming in. Xavier could take that song to the next level :hump

IMO...
IOY - Sick of it but it will make it
27 - Here to stay, I agree about Dave saying it sounds like and older song which is the direction they want to go
ADSR - There would have to be some studio magic to make this good for the album but I do like the song
Eh Hee - Dave Solo thing (not making it)
Shotgun - In
Cornbread - Love the live version with Danny Barnes and apparently he is in studio with them so it looks like it will be but I just don't feel like it is a good idea for the album.
Who knows though... after '04 we thought we were in store for all 5 of those had a good chance of making it and only Hello Again did. But I think that was the producers fault

I think all the ones that got played big in 07 will make it but for maybe EH HEE since its already been a Single.

The Idea of You could easily be fixed in the studio. Cornbread too, even the haters have to realize the potential this song has musically. It's riff driven with interesting fills from everyone. That sounds familiar/takes me back to another time. Lyrically yea it's a total fucking mess right now, but studio time, work ethic, and a producer who pushes bands, just might change that. As for what I want to be absolute locks for the album

Eh Hee & Cornbread - in between maybe & probably
ADSR can go fuck itself and die. that song is terrible, and I hope it dies and is never heard from again.
Also, why do people keep thinking that Loving Wings is coming back? There's no chance is hell that song is gonna make it onto the album. None of the 2002 songs will be on it. The oldest song that has a chance is SUAD, but that's most likely going to live on as a live only song.

Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics! I think the music will be fine, but if there's one factor that makes or breaks this album, it's the lyrics. IOY, Shotgun, ADSR, and Cornbread all need work right now.

because it and SUAD (and Shotgun and Cornbread, but that's aside the point) were laid down in a studio in November. Not saying that I think they will or wont be on there, but that answers your question.
EDIT: as for your sig, I do tend to diss butch, and I am, coincidentally, jealous.

It has as much chance as any other song they've created and not released on an album in the past. This band will pull stuff out when its least expected, so anything is fair game.

ok, i can understand that, but i just get tired of the repetitious nature of the guitar part, and for me, it just doesn't seem to ever go anywhere. I'd rather have that space on the album used for something, IMO, far superior.

Cornbread needs a COMPLETE lyrical re-write, and it needs a much better chorus. The bridge sounds like Joyride to me, which is a much much better song, but that's ok.
Unfortunately, I have little to no faith that DMB would put this much work into something "that's a song!" already, so I'd prefer the just scrap it for now and try again down the road.

As a band you just don't out of the blue invite a lead guitarist who hasn't played on an album in 10 years and put aside whatever differences band members may have had...unless you want to work. They also would have kept Mark Batson if they wanted to be lazy. Rob Cavallo's resume doesn't impress me that much, but his production style does, and his video interview did. I'm not saying it means this guy is a uber producer who is going to blow everything else out of the water; however this formula they are going with (not to mention doing the bulk of recording in seattle, not their gazillion dollar studio) leads me to believe this album has the ingredients for at least the 4th best they've done. And I don't know about you, but I'll take an album better than Busted Stuff or Everyday any day of the week.
Now all that being said, that is why I think Dave (especially with Tim) can go back and re-work these tunes. Maybe he goes back to Dave and Tim style lyrics for Cornbread and works from there, which would be great. Maybe Cavallo says, Carter your coldplay, clocks, drum beat in the chorus of Idea of You is lazy and you can be far more unique. Granted I don't know if any of this is going to happen, but the evidence that exists right now leads me to believe it is more possible than it has been in a long time.

Which is why I'd be completely unsurprised if only 1 or 2 of the "new" songs survived in a recognizable form.
They brought in a new producer to get a fresh direction in studio, and they brought TR into studio to get back to their roots.
I'm prepared for anything on the other side.
